soapbox archive 2
I have a total crush on one of the guys in my class. He's got a really hot "faux" hawk.
HEY COOL I HAVE A FAUX HAWK!!! My name is Mark... but i may not be the only one with a faux hawk... lol.
Don't worry you can talk to me i am very approachable. HAHA and i love humor and a good joke... and im not ruling out the possibility that this might be one... wink wink..
Later
Little does Mark know that his girlfriend from that wretched, wretched school to the North, actually posted that and that he BETTER NOT BE APPROACHABLE TO ANY WOMEN AT TECH OR SHE'LL KILL HIM.
Haha, "Fleece". -Lyndz.
Fresh Soapbox......enjoy!!!

I'm Darby Bryant and I approved this message:
Come on Darby... we're all on the edges of our seats... what is it that you have to say???
Fascinating
Whats fascinating is you don't understand the point I was trying to make. Also, you chide my post anonymously. How about this? I just invented a new drinking game. I'm going to drink every time someone complains about the soapbox color and I'm going to take a shot every time someone going into BC complains about studio. Oh, and don't forget to watch the debate tonight. Love, Darby.
razav
Scott Weathers is my idol
As disdainful as I find the Bush campaign, I have a feeling that tonight everyone is going to remember how Cheney is the one that's really in charge. Who the hell is Edwards?
Although it is true that Cheney is the real power house of the administration, I disagree in your statement that Cheney will rule the debate. People cannot relate to an old, ugly, unhappy looking VP nearly as much as they can a youthful, vibrant Senator. Kerry '04!
conviction, folks! it's all about conviction! the bush/cheney team might not be as proficient in their oration/rhetoric skills, but what they lack in hair and voice, they make up for in conviction, patriotism, love, and passion. -dp
yeh conviction that they are in for themselves and their class, everything else and everyone else be damned.
Who stole my Bristol?I found my portfolio was unzipped this morning when I came back to the studio, and my $36 Bristol package was GONE…
Please kids, buy your own stuff and if you want one piece of Bristol you can just take ONE, not the whole package.
If you don’t want to go to hell, place MY Bristol package back to where it was last night.
I apparently left my cutting board in the studio. It is a green Alvin one... and it has my name (Jim Stoddart) written on the back in permanent marker. If you have it or know where it is, please put it in the top drawer of the file cabinet closest to the windows... the name tag should say "James Stoddart"... for every day it fails to show up, i will strategically leave a perishable food item in the studio until the smell becomes so foul that no one will be able to work... okay, maybe not that, but I really would like it back... thanks.
yo
- folks, please return these items. if you borrow a sheet its ok but dont take the whole pad
Learn To Watch Your Stuff!
i am hoping that soapbox does not turn into a billboard full of "someone stole my stuff"
I agree. People, stop stealing people's crap. Then they won't write about it.
Hi, my name is Ernest and I am a second year BC major looking for a date. People say I have decent social skills and am a good kisser. I hear you first year ladies are quite a fine looking group this year. If you are interested please call 919-280-2430. Thanks all you hot babes.
Haha! Ernest, eh? You're a funny guy. Let us know if you get any calls.
Hey, Ernest. I gave your phone number to my grandmother. She loves desperate men.
You can call me, Ernest! 770-908-7383
Is anybody else dreaming about man-eating 3-D cubes (that is WHEN you sleep)?
I have a very good question which I believe warrants a genuine response:
I spend 9 hrs in studio each week. I spend 2.5 hrs in French each week. I spend an average 20 or so hrs each week on studio homework. I spend an average 1 hr each week on French homework.
Total Credit Hrs Studio:3
French:3
Here's the part where I get to the question...
WHO THA HELL DECIDED CFY STUDIO IS ONLY WORTH 3 FRIGGIN HOURS?!?
- If you are an ID major or an ARCH major, you had better grow to love studio!..If not, hitch a ride on the M-train.
sk?
Comments?
any truth to the rumor that they are going to decrease studio credit hours to one??? That's about equal to the amount of work we put into it I think....Sincerely, Ernest (ladies, I'm still waiting for the call ;))
- It has been some time since I have shown my love for the Studio 200 Rejects...
I <3 STUDIO 200 REJECTS
razav
I kinda like being a part of studio 200. We're sort of the black sheep of the cfy family.
To PedEx Group E-1 A: I can meet you today 6:10pm, at the courtyard. myung.
To GROUP E-8 H:
I emailed you all this morning. The gt email system has not been working properly; therefore, please keep checking the page set up for our TA section (Myung) in order to get info and email asap. Thanks!
let's not play music loudly in the studio. it's really annoying as hell.
Group A2 - we need your e-mail addresses so that we can decide on a meeting time....JB
Burn, Baby, Burn!
heat, beat, retreat baby!!!
kerry/edwards '04!! yeah!!
Kerry is antisemitic.
- where do you get that from? lets keep easy slander out of the soapbox
To GROUP E-3 C
1.Genevieve Rudat
2.Tiffany Savage
5.Jamila Penn
6.Severin Piehl
I need your e-mail addresses, aim S/Ns, phone numbers, or what not. We need to get together and decide on when to meet. So far, I've only talked with one other person - Kristen Russell. And our best day would be tuesday or thursday. so tomorrow would be really good. Also, we have both have classes that make us unavailible from 3:00 on on tu/th. The sooner we can get together, the better.
- Justin Schwartzhoff (gtg121h@mail.gatech.edu, 678-575-2051, AIM S/N thegeneral84
everyone ever heard of a thing called the directory? you can look up email addresses there!
Some people have multiple listings.
Kristen's TA group X: I emailed everyone so check your email & get back to me asap
Ernest back here again, ladies, I am disappointed on how slow the calls are coming in?? You know that cute guy you stare at in 1060 three times a week?? That is me. Sabir may be hot like fire, but that is nothing compared to me. How can you ladies resist my charm. Among my many talents are the following: perspective drawings, charcoal shading, motions drawings, cube master, professional drafter. Ladies, show me some love.
- a word for this ernest-character : if you are (as you say you are) a second year bc, it must reflect on your entire being that you've been here for two years and can't get anybody to go on a date with you, and so therefore must rely on the impressionable young first year ladies who haven't had a year to observe your lousy self. i know that any of the girls at tech are too smart to fall for your low attempts at getting a date. So i suggest you move up the road a little bit and try your disgusting smooth ways on some poor soul who goes to GSU.
sincerely,
The one who doesn't need a date
Dear 'The one who doesn't need a date',
Take a joke.
Dear Earnest. Humor is a very important characteristic in chosing a man. Especially when the humor is lacking. Learn to let a joke die, and you will seem infinately more funny.
thats not how you spell infinitely
To quote most engineers here - I'm at Tech, if my professors can't speak english correctly, then I sure as hell shouldn't have to
you didn't spell "choosing" right either, if we wanna get picky
Geez... there are some really uptight people in Common First Year Arch. I would much rather see Ernest's rather amusing comments in the soap box versus a bunch of critical, nit-picky, mean spirited remarks from uptight squares. That's all I've seen on the soapbox... people who like to nit-pick at everyone else about silly things. Lighten up everyone!
JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT I DID NOT APPRECIATE WHOEVER WROTE:"...POOR SOUL WHO GOES TO GSU." JUST BECAUSE YOU GO TO TECH DOES NOT MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON. LET'S BE MATURE!!
Aww earnest, poor thing. See, girls like guys like Earnest, who have a sense of humor. I think "doesn't need a date" is jealous. Maybe he's the uptight square that we've been talking about. Of course you don't need a date, you got not chance of keeping it. :( sorry!
ernest, how about post your picture here so we can see you are hot or not...?
i am gay, am i the only gay guy in cfy?
No. I am too. Are you going to Big Gay Out, 'cus everyone definitely should? I even helped chalk for it last night, so all the more reason to go :-). You can thank me for the "BIG GAY OUT" between some of the trees by the canpanile and for the words "Thurs 8pm-12" on the island one. Anyone seen them?
BTW, it's under the couch
...
about the ernest thing,
um, I'm really sorry if that sounded like i was uptight. i definitely did not mean for it to come out in that mean-spirited attitude. i guess it was a poor attempt at playing along with the joke. i apologize about the GSU thing too. again, it was intended to be written in a humorous, poke-in-the-stomach/winking type of humour. not an official bashing ceremonial. no i'm not jealous either, just not in need of a date right now!
sincerely,
the one who is really sorry for appearing uptight and spiteful
Whats the purpose of life? Can anyone tell me?
to love other people
or...to be a famous architect...
And when you love other people, you in turn will be loved.
Do we have to do a reading summary for this week? I'd like to not put it off until the last minute if I could.
i'm gay too. i don't want to go to the big gay out because i'm scared. ive heard this is a pretty conservative school, which is kinda creepy. anyone else out there gay? or supports gay rights/gay people?
big gay out is pretty awesome actually. it's not like everyone stands around and looks at you and judges you. in fact, it's usually a bit hard to see. but it gives people, gay or not, a chance to come and hang out and dance. plus, you can meet new people that are gay or that support you. the pride alliance is really big on getting gay allies as members, not just gay people themselves. plus, if you decide you feel uncomfortable at the big gay out, you can always just leave.
- just a little friendly advice from one who's been there, both literally and figuratively
This is a pretty conservative campus (or at least, those who fall on towards the right seem to be the most vocal here), but from what I hear, there are a lot of homosexuals in the COA. I know for a fact that Felix, the guy who helps head up GTCOW, is a 2nd year architect major here. Great guy if you ever get to meet him, even if you aren't gay.
Do we have to do a reading summary for this week? I'd like to not put it off until the last minute if I could.
Just a little bit of a rant here, hope no one minds...WHY ARE WE GIVEN NOTICE ONLY TODAY THAT WE HAVE TO SOMEHOW GET OUR GROUP TOGETHER (PEOPLE THAT WE DON'T EVEN KNOW) BY SUNDAY TO MEET WITH OUR TA FOR THE STREET PROJECT??? Perhaps everyone in the group does not have the same schedule & available times to get together. Some of the group may not live on campus either. Here's a solution - Why haven't we been given the option to meet after or during class? I'm pretty sure our groups would be there at that time...OK, I'm done.
I second the comment about getting the group together. I have emailed, posted on the soapbox, and posted on the page set up for my pedex group. STILL, two people have yet to respond. I would greatly appreciate if people would do their part so that we do not wait until the last minute to do EVERYTHING. You know...it is projects like this that two people always end up doing EVERYTHING. I am not a fan of doing this whole get up with people that we do not know just for the simple fact that schedules are not jiving and people do not do their part. I understand life is about meeting new people and working with them, but when they do not do their part you are the one who ultimately suffers. Ok, now I'm done! :)
we were all given the opportunity over the weekend to sign up for groups with people that we did know, and wanted to work with. sabir said it in class on friday, i think. and then from monday on, we were supposed to figure out our times to meet. i didnt do any of it either, but i guess we could have been in groups with people in our studios so that we wouldnt have such conflicts, and we could have set them up on monday or tuesday. at least my TA set up the groups on sunday night, so we could have done it monday. end of rant!
Do we have to do a reading summary for this week? I'd like to not put it off until the last minute if I could.
Ok...yes, we were given the opportunity to sign up with people in our class. BUT, if there are not 5-6 people in a TA section and just 3 of whom are in our class (like we had happen) then we have to have 2-3 people we do not know come into the group. I did do all of the work just so you know. So, therefore that I do have the right to say that it stinks that certain (1-2) out of the group always step up to the plate and do the work. THE END!!!

That’s a cool video....
This year’s election process allows for our votes to be easily rigged because of the new electronic machines that do not print out paper ballots. It was rigged in 2000 and it can be rigged again.
Please take a minute to sign the petition that will send a letter to President Bush, Senators, Representatives, and state election officials declaring verification of our votes.

This is a DEMOCRACY. We all have the right to vote in this election. Don’t allow them to throw out your vote this year.
sabir, do we have reading summary assignments due this sunday? thank you.
yes, one essay, fun and full of great ideas about walking in cities. sk

When is Studio B going to strike again? You guys have been quiet for a long time, so it only makes me think that something good has got to be coming...
- Don't worry it's coming (very soon if Sabir would just let us take his picture)...though I think we decided to back off for a short while before we attack again. didn't realize some people look forward to our nonsense..we have a fan!
- it's also because studio has taken up not only our free time, but also the rest of our time as well..we are sorry to disappoint you..maybe give us some ideas to manipulate the code on the soapbox..not saying that we do that, just that we could find someone who does..errr..
Speaking of Studio B... Do we have anything due tomorrow?
- you might want to try visiting George's instructor page
I'm a twat. I wish i could be a kid in studio B.
I hope studio B hasn't forgotten their black sheep section B4. Maybe we can combine section B with studio 200.
Does anyone know where to find the article for 10.10 I cant find it on the reserves.
- go here http://www.library.gatech.edu Click on course reserves, online reserves at the top. Log in. Browse for College of Architecture. Click on Khan under COA 1060. There you'll find the article.
Yeah Ive tried that...theres nothing listed under kahn 1060.
KHAN not KAHN
yeah tried that one too...thanks for trying to help though!
However it's defintly listed as KAHN on the website!
- no, it is not. ive checked again. which website are you on!
- if you search under college/school for College of Architecture instead of search for professor you should find the right page
How do i upload an image on to cooldaze and/or what is my username to do so?
name: attach
pass: carmen
Who are you?
"I'm Batman..."
I can't get my grades!!
Everytime I try to get into the course file a message about the server resetting pops up.
SUP WID DAT
Hey Ernest, are you from NC, cuz you have a 919 number and so do I. I'm not big on blind dates, but maybe you could give me a ride home. A pic would be nice too ;)
Ok, I'll give you some credit; this one actually got a chuckle. The music stuff gets obnoxious though.
- I for one, love the music!
peace, love, and music
- Y'all should make Sabir the element of FIRE!
- It's not rite! I can't hear the music...I've never heard music coming from the soapbox...why??? could someone help me out here? I'm pretty computer illiterate for a tech student...
- we already took the music off this morning
lets change the channel and get serious. inform yourself and rock the vote:
On Monday evening, come see an unprecedented event that will never be repeated again – Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bonnie Raitt, R.E.M., Jackson Browne, and others will share the stage at the Vote for Change grand finale concert.
It's the weekend...time to party!!!!
but remember...your mother is always watching!!!
Blah! i'm drnuk!
Wait... does no one else have to spend every waking moment of the weekend in the studio? My instructor seems to think thats friggin appropriate!! ARGH! Give it a break for one dang day!
- I concur
- No, but I do have to spend all weekend making cardboard study models and doing PedEx. At least you get to work in your own room / not studio with those :).
Random question: Will there be any more discussions about 1060 lectures? They stopped on one in September...
- They stopped because we kind of shifted focus onto pedEx, and then the individual disciplines. I'd planned on getting them back up once we got into more "material" (according to the schedule, on October 20). Although, I did think about having one just to discuss the three areas within the college. I'll go ahead and create a page for that, and if people have some things to say, great. -david p
- it's up! ...Discussion 7: 9/26-10/20 - Program Directors, "3 Disciplines in the COA"
newsflash...Architects name Taipei 101 skyscraper the world's tallest building...
- HTF-Just click and thank me later...but use headphones/speakers
library online course reserves had a server error when i tried to access the summery article. mabee that's why sk extended the due date? anyone else have the same problem?
I'm having issues with it too, dont worry. I really need to get his stuff done though, how long will it take to fix it?
I got the copy of the summary material on Friday, but since then it has not been working. If you all are having trouble contact the library and then go from there. Hope all goes well and I will try and help you all out if I can. I will check into it for you all.
I checked into it by calling the library, and they said that the problem is unknown and has been reported to be corrected and put back up. They have no idea when it will be back up (could be tonight, tom., whenever); therefore, there is nothing you can really do until then. Just keep checkin every so often to check when it is back up.
hey instructors how about we cut down the work a little. we are in college, we don't have the money to be buying that much illustration board.
Dont forget we'd like to have a little bit of a life. Well, we can dream anyway.
I guess you could say I've been dreaming all weekend
Do we have a summary due this weekend? There aren't any new postings...

Awesome picture!
Why should we vote for this Ashlee person? she's an architecture major, I presume?

In spirit of Homecoming, Studio B will be creating several images with our faculty as superheros!
is there a place we can access pictures, get info on the candidates? that's the first I've heard about it...
VOTE FOR SABIR KHAN FOR MR. GEROGIA TECH!
- VOTE FOR SOMEBODY WHO CAN SPELL!!!
He is a huge bad ass and he is really active on campus annd is an amazing professor. He really deserves it.
- Heh, Gerogia...though I'm sure that Sabir is an excellent speller. He's definitely got my vote. That bad ass...
Vote for Ashlee McQueen for Ms. Georgia Tech! She is involved in a lot of organizations on campus and is a great girl!

The Surrealist's Compliment Generator
When are we going to be able to print out the reading assignment material off the web? If it is not up soon, can we get an extension? I know a lot of people wait till the last min. but there are some of us who have busy schedules and have to have good time management
- IM NOT SURE WHY YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO. I WENT TO THE LIBRARY ONLINE RESERVES ON SUNDAY AND THEN AGAIN ON MONDAY AND WAS ABLE TO DOWNLOAD READINGS FOR 10.13 AND 10.17. SK (you might want to refresh the page; reenter http://www.library.gatech.edu, then go to online reserves, then to 'college of architecture' then to coa 1060 khan, then to the readings)
Some people just cant handle the 'nology at tech. Geez. We're obviously the most advanced campus on the earth... oh, wait what?
So, what is the extension date for this past Sundays summary?
so, if you went to the assignment page you would know what it is.
I must say: 'Your face is like an imperfectly shaven tennis ball.'
Why thank you. In fact, your skin sheds forth so that I endlessly crave pans of fried baclava. And may you always have stables of horses to service your needs.
Concerning this weekend:Sabir is the man! We love him dearly!
what about this weekend?
groups pages are up and running for everyone in SHI-Z (Conschafter).
hey, i didn't think teachers were supposed to assign work over fall break
Are they seriously not allowed to? Where's that coming from?
thats what my studio instructor said
Does my studio instructor know that?
awww i'm sorry you must have forgotten what school you go to
we're all going to die

hey, i didn't think teachers were supposed to assign work over fall break
My teacher is crazy...it NEVER ends! I mean it is not fun anymore, but I am not going to let one teacher get in the way of my career path. The past couple weeks have been hell and not to mention I am failing a class b/c I NEVER get to study that material b/c I am ALWAYS in studio.Yeah, GT shouldn't even bother giving us a break b/c it tends to be more of a punishment if you ask me. Longer weekend = more work!
- HA HA... wait till you guys have a crazy amount of work over Spring Break.
I am going to cancel my plans for spring break just like I did for fall break b/c of all the work assigned.
What is all this work you guys are talking about?
why am I up so late right now... it's 4:51 in the morning!!
I'm not cancelling my plans. If all I did was work, I'd go crazy. You gotta schedules breaks for yourself.
Am i the only one who still can not get to the reading for today's summary? I've gone to online reserves and looked under Architecture and under COA1060, Kahn but still can not find it. Help please.
- when you go to online reserves and browse, you SHOULD NOT look under Architecture. you should look under COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE (courses with a COA designation are listed here). you will find COA 1060 KHAN here. sk
I'm pretty sure you spell it kHan not kaHn. try that
For the person who asked, "What is all this work you guys are talking about?" It is b/c T/Th kids are getting shafted by having to do all this work over the "fall break." That is what it is about :)
So lets get this straight: The MWF classes generally have more time to get everything done, the TR classes are generally scrambling to meet their instructors' requirements...ergo...lets do something crazy and give the mwf classes a true break, but tell the TR classes that their weekend workload is about the same as usual (if not doubled for the fact that SOME instructors feel that fall break means they can give us an assload of work since we'll have more time than usual to work on it). I just adore CFY.
SABIR!!! Where's your love for the TR kids? Christ Almighty!
Let's get this straight, we should feel bad for the TR kids who have 4 days to get many of their assignments done? Are you kidding me? What about the MWF kids who have 2 days to get their stuff done?
What about the fact that us TR kids get all the work and techer time piled in to two days of classes, oposed to your 3
In reference to the person who is obviously a M/W/F student that commmented sarcastically about feeling bad for T/Th, let me remind you that since we have 4 days off b/w Th and T we are given just as much if not twice as much work as the M/W/F classes. Now, we all work hard (well for the percentage of us who have proven through our craftsmanship that we care) and therefore instead of bashing someone for blowing off some steam about the whole situation, accept the fact that some teachers are much much harder on their students than other teachers in CFY. I think it is great that the M/W/F students get a break, but you don't have to approach the T/Th kids comments about how it sucks we have to finish all this crap in our "break," in such a negative way. T/Th kids...enjoy your time off as much as you can and just remember....take M/W/F classes in the future!
ALSO may I remind you MWF kids that we may have four days...but its the frickin weekend!!! Can we have NO life outside of ARCH?
Bitching makes me sick.
your language makes me sick!!!!!!!!!!
reading summaries make me sick!!!
I could not agree more. Boring boring boring!
~LAZOR~
- intelligence means never having to say you are bored.
honestly guys, being bored is a sign of laziness or worse. you might find the reading summaries tough (all mental work is), but boring?!!! in college it is your task, should you choose to accept it, to find something of interest in everything you take on.
- NO ONE HAS WORK assigned over break. this goes for both mwf and tr sections.
since tr sections meet this thursday and then not again until the following thursday (and fall break goes from friday to tuesday evening), tr sections might have some work to do between tomorrow and the following thursday. work that can be finished between tuesday evening and thursday class time. all instructors have agreed to do this. sk
First off, to the TR people who complain about twice as much work on their four day peiods between classes, at least you have thursday night and monday night to work on that stuff...those aren't weekend days. When mwf people get assignments over the weekend, me have only friday night, saturday, and sunday to get that done. And even though we have equal amounts of class time, because classes are longer and fewer for TR people, you guys can waste much less time setting up and packing up and you end up with more class time to get stuff done!! Okay, that's my venting
Why is it that Sabir told our teachers not to give us any homework at all over fall break (for which I am abundantly grateful, don't get me wrong), yet for 1060 we have a reading assignment due right in the middle of our break??
-point taken. assignment 10.17 moved to 10.20. sk
Don't hate 'cause the articles aren't great... We still have to read them, and yes, summarize them. Look past the repetition and the incomprehensible terms… I am sure there is a point to it somewhere, somehow, sometime… Just don’t hold your breath in waiting for the epiphany of the significance of the articles to hit you… because you will most likely die…
- I'm thinking a lot of you hated your high school lit classes.
Really? Whatever gave you that idea?
That's why we are at TECH, at least most of us.
- actually i came for architecture
I don't like these reading assignments being pushed back. It's throwing off my schedule, especially since I'm TR and Wednesday nights are HELL! I'd much rather do it on Sunday night. So stop complaining and pushing the dates back. Those extra days don't give you any extra time to do your articles cause you're all going to procrastinate till the last night anyway.
- Hey, I loved my Lit. classes! (And I did very well in all of them, I might add.) However, that doesn’t mean that these articles are easy. In and of themselves they can be very challenging to understand, and on top of that we have been asked to squeeze them into a summary format that many simply were not written to fit. On top of that, this language used is extremely esoteric, with elusive, mercurial and imprecise meaning.
But then again, this is college, and Georgia Tech at that.
One more thing; touting your intellectualism, or impugning the intelligence of others is a game for preschool children who lack maturity and self-control. If you want to mock someone, do it on your own time and in your own space, and stop clouding up the public space of the soapbox with your infantile drivel.
- apologies. felt like an outburst. just got a bit tired of it....
To those of you that decided to take studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays..maybe you thought you were getting off easy, or that you wanted your Fridays for Heavy Drinking..heck I know I would..well now it's the MWF's studios turn to Drink Heavily and laugh...hahahahahaha

Here are a few words from Studio B's professor that you might know: Hermeneutical and Ad Hoc..he says to all of us..read a newspaper and we will learn words such as these...yeah..
For the person who doesn't want extensions on the reading assignments, no one is stopping you from doing your homework on Sunday nights. If that is most convenient, then go for it. The rest of us would like a little more time.
what the hell is wrong with u people. ur bitching out someone u dont even know over the dumbest thing in the wrold...just chill guys.
I really don't understand what the deal is with all of this dueling between MWF classes and TTr classes... face it the studio class rapes us in the @$$ no matter which day we have it... can't we all just get along.
ahhhhh... freshman drama. i'm glad i'm a sophomore.
So the final debate between the President and the Senator from Mass. is over. My only complaint is the role of religion in American politics. In any other country in the world you shoot yourself in the foot by mentioning God on the campaign trail. In America it is aparently manditory to give God all the credit for anything we've acomplished. What ever happened to the separation between church and state. (Don't even get me started on no alcohol sales on Sunday)
I am so ashamed of this soapbox. if you look at the soapbox from last year, for example, they were full of like good ideas and tried to help eachother out, and would like make suggestions; it was mostly if not all positive, from what I saw. I don't know why ours is so... pathetic, like its not, but it gets shameful at times. I apreciate the humor, don't get me wrong, but its the cursing and the bad mouthing and the arguing that's sad to me.
I bet the main reason the police keep people away from a plane crash is they don't want anybody walking in and lying down in the crash stuff, then, when somebody comes up, act like they just woke up and go, "What was THAT?!"
How about since this is the CFY soapbox, we say whatever we want and second years stay out of it. It's not really any of your business anyway. And we all know architecture is so time consuming, so don't you have something better and more important to do??
As a return to a previous point, America is the greatest country in the world because it stands on a different set of beliefs and morals than the rest of the world. I for one, am happy and proud that our leaders feel it necessary to pay homage to a higher being. Yes, I believe that church and state should be separate because America is based on everyone being able to follow their own path when dealing with faith and religion. However, I would like to remind you that separation between church and state is very different than separation between church and soul. Please don't get the two confused because they are very different principles.
actually, i'm a sophomore in cfy. there are over 40 of us that changed to architecture. so we're in this cfy with you. so in actuality, it is my business because this is just as much my soapbox as it is yours.
Is it just me, or does it look like the soapbox got erased again?
Yeah, and it did right after I made a comment about sophomores staying out of CFY business. Leave us alone and go back to your studio!!
Does someone know how to use HISTORY option on the top of it to recover the old soapbox?
THERE ARE SOPHOMORES (AS WELL AS JUNIORS, MAYBE EVEN SOME SENIORS) IN CFY! ABOUT 40 OF US ACTUALLY! WE HAVE CHANGED OUR MAJORS TO ARCH/ID/BC AND HAVE TO GO THROUGH CFY JUST LIKE YOU DO! YOU ARE NOT JUST A BUNCH OF FRESHMAN!
you are not your gpa
Try and tell your scholarships that...
Wow, you people are really immature and rude. Anyways, we just wanted to say hey from studio. It is 4am and we are jamming. Sorry you all are sleeping and are missing the party! :)
ok..recovered the soapbox. Have fun now and be careful.
Yay it's 5:11am. The party is still hoppin! You are missing it :0
Technically, I'm a 63 hour freshman right now.
Nobody cares what grade your in, just quit being so critical of those younger than you. Don't be jealous that they are in the same grade, just get over it!

Who wants to contribute in making today’s soapbox more positive?
i do i do! roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, cyf studio loves you!
the pessimist in me wants to say that your statement is not true...but, since we are taking a positivist slant, i will suspend disbelief and dig on some cfyLove.
This is the cube that doesn't end
Yes it goes on and on my friend
Some people started building it not knowing what it was
And we'll continue building it forever just because
this is the cube that doesn't end...
what thickness of museum board did everyone get for final cube? 2-ply? 4-ply?
I can do nothing right when it comes to my cube!
My cube loves me.
2-ply, because it's so much cheaper. =0
folks,

sabir
We've all seen the Hulk...

but have you met the Hunk that is Sabir:

mmm...yummy

Sabir Loves George W. Bush! Vote for W in the 2004 election!
I don't approve of it. INTELLIGENT PEOPLE DON'T LIKE BUSH, RIGHT SABIR?
one more day to holiday
BUSH + DICK = SCREWED

Kerry= liar + ugly git + indecisive + the UN wants him president
That right there should be enough to say NO to Kerry, because we all know that the UN favors weakness....
Oh by the way, you got the wrong answer for Bush + Dick, it equals a safer and better America...
W in '04!
Nice try Sabir! hahahahaha
ha
Not to be mean, but the Photoshoping of Sabir is getting old. Can we get a new challenge going?
Why don't you start one?? Why don't you make fun of your instructor? Sabir is just an easy target..no offense Sabir.
Oh and I'm bringing an earlier one back because a bunch of us thought it was funny!

Sabir Loves George W. Bush! Vote for W in the 2004 election!
If you don't like the sabir photoshops, why don't you do one of someone else? I still think these are funny. I don't even like Bush, but this puts a fresh face on politics
I have a theory (who agrees/disagrees/or am I totally off?): the reason why PDiddy and our fellow friends at mtv and alike are having to "rock the vote" instead of the politicians actively and passionately trying to win our(youth) vote is bc they don't know how we will vote. Yea, it is standard to say that young ppl tend to be more liberal, but has anyone walked on campus yet???? My proof for this point comes from the catering to the black vote. Kerry is pushing the black vote cycle bc blacks tend to vote for Dem and that could push him over the edge. We are just too big of a risk, so while they are debating policy that will really effect us (ie. us paying ss for two ppl (that means less money from your paycheck will go to your bank accnt)), we are just ignoring them like we always do instead of paying attn to our future. Am I off base on this long rant?
do what?
I agree with you about the whole ss system being crap but i don't get your point. They are rocking the vote because they want more people to vote. something like 50% of our country doesn't even vote for our president. It's important that everyone votes this year because its a big election year. This year we get to decide if we want to keep America going the way it is... with problems in ss, healthcare, and the war in Iraq, or elect a new president. I say we elect a new president.
if they wanted to peddle the older demographics, then they would haver ppl like Bet Middler, Sean Connery, etc getting the vote out. When mtv takes a project on, they do it inorder ot target the young vote. Most adults would be like pdiddy, thats the goofy guy that my child listens to. As far as the do what? person, if you don't understand what i am talking about, pay attn to the national news. It might help your check book to pay attn. As for the above statement, that is another problem about our two party system. Everyone is so bipartisn that we cant have a good, solid, policy debate. PS Turn ESPN on, MAJOR bcs implications. miami trailing:)
JOHN KERRY
Coincidence? I think not.
If you want to talk politics, there's a newsgroup for you already set up. Just have outlook, thunderbird, etc. connect to git.talk.politics. You might like it a bit more than here.
So, Who's still up working on beautiful cubes??
Sabir- there's a whole lot of people down here in studio that are probably going to be here all night, so don't be surprised if you see a lot of meditation going on in lecture at noon.
did anyone else hear that ATL is getting it's very own triumphal arch?

You're not alone. I'm working on my cube over the break too. There's no way I could do this in just 2 days. Oh well. At least I'm getting sleep!
I 3 ~
WOW.....fall break sucked
how could a 4 day weekend possibly suck? if nothing else, it was out of the ordinary.
My fall break sucked too, apparently my instructor believes an entire model can be built in less than two days. It can be done... it'll just look like hell
ahh what happened to the weather?
- at least its sunny up in cooldazeland
Ok...so this is plenty notice for a request. Please please please please please do not give us work over the Thanksgiving break (especially T/Th classes). Thanks in advance! :)
Has anybody read the article for tommorow. I just spent an hour reading it and it was way over my head.
- its not the side of a cereal box, thats for sure. but if you were to make a note of what he is saying, how he is saying it, what connections he is making, you would begin to grasp the argument. [why does he talk about traffic and about democracy? what might be the connection here?]. sk
Sabir, can you take a few minutes in class to explain it? He did not even talk about democracy that much, but there is a high probabilty that I am just not intelligent enough.
- i dont think its about not being intelligent enough. i think if you read it once and then tried to summarize it following the template, you would begin to get a sense of the main argument he is making. then a second go around would begin to fill in the gaps. sk

where is the reading for 10/19? the page skips from 13 to 24.
try to read what the pages are, they go from an intro to a certain "chapter" of the book or whatever it came from
this park sounds cool
Anybody heard of a band/collaboration from Detroit called "Saturday Looks Good to Me"? If you have mp3's or a torrent link to any of their albums other than the latest one, let me know on the soapbox.
Is there really any need to yell like that?? Calm down, this isn't the soapbox you stand on and preach the fire from. Chill, por favor. Gracias.
Maybe I should have simply said something positive about Bush instead of increasing my font size. That would have gotten me more attention, albeit negative

Now that the PedEx project is suspended...does Bush get anyone elses vote. Thank goodness for the Dept of Homeland Security...although I am a bit suspicious that this may just be a campaign ploy. Perhaps, the "October Surprise"! Viva Bush!
Today's lecturer was awesome! He was great fun, I wish he would come back again. Besides, I would like to know what the architect did to give him such a bad taste about them. Not to mention other private firms. Who cares though, he did better than all of them combined. And I think he would be a definite sponsor for freedom
fries, since the French got to him as well...
we should all write a letter to michael moore about this pedex thing so that he can interview us for his next movie. :)
All I know is that now Bush has my vote for sure
I'd rather do Ped Ex than have Bush in office.
I agree!! Hey, does anyone know if the power point on the final exam page has the final exam questions? Or are these just sample questions? I'm only asking because I don't think they've changed since I looked last.
Just a bit I wrote on this:
"I am disappointed that such a large part of my grade that would be as easy as taking some pictures has been called-off. Beyond that, I simply find it disturbing that a project that was intended to provide possibilities for the city as secondary purpose cannot be executed without having to be concerned with the suspicion it raises, even after the appropriate authorities were notified that the exercise that would be going on in an attempt to keep calm about less-200 students suddenly on the streets with cameras."
~W. Aenchbacher

Wow, i laughed my ass off at this one, i love it! i think someone has been paying too much attention in CS 1315 tho, i must say!
The fact that the PedEx project is cancelled makes me extremely angry because I was the one taking the pictures in my group and I now have about 300 random street pictures just sitting on my computer. My group and I went out to do our walk the same day the e-mail was sent out saying to hold off on the photography (but we didn't get it in time). What am I supposed to do with these pictures? Is it ok if I delete them or is there a chance that I'll need them in the future?
Do you hear that? It is barely audible... It's the world's smallest violin playing a song for you little babies. The project was cancelled, GET OVER IT! I have a ton of pictures on my computer, too, but I am glad to hear that the government is actually paying attention, I mean GEEZ! Would you rather see a repeat of September 11? Remember, terrorists were young once too...
- I was going to ask if you actually believed this, but I really would rather trust that you are just joking.
- No one would have cared if it hadn't been brought to their attention that we were going to be doing this. It's not like they knew what was going on.
I was young once tooo....
- we will do the project next spring as part of 1012. we want to make sure that you are not hassled unduly while you carry out your research. you may wish to keep or delete the photos youve taken. sk
GOOD LORD!! chill out! I wasn't getting mad at anyone in particular. I'm just a bit peeved that I did all that work and now I can't use it. I still had fun with my group and I can certainly understand why this project would worry some people. BTW, i'm flattered that the smallest violin is playing just for me but next time, let's leave it back in the 7th grade where it belongs.
randomness.... GTCOW = poo....keep herman munster away from the most powerful position in the world...quit whining about pedex cancellation...it's less stress for you!

Secondly, I am missing my portfolio. I last saw it Wednesday evening – at around 6:30 PM – by the second floor CFY lockers, in the small alcove that has a desk/chair in it. My portfolio is gray, and includes a vellum pad, a bristol pad, a sketch pad, 30/60 and adjustable triangles, and both types of scales. I may have forgotten to mention a tool, but I am sure of what kinds of paper/pads are in the portfolio. I did not write my name on my portfolio, so I was thinking that someone might have taken my portfolio by accident. If anyone has my portfolio, or has seen it, could you please give me a call on my cell phone (number: (504)256-0425). I need to get the portfolio as soon as possible. Thank you.

Don't like Bush or Kerry? Vote for Michael Badnarik
Vote Libertarian and throw your vote away!!
maybe i am slow, but what happened to the stormy daze?
maybe you are slow...

Vote Kerry in 04 for a more socialist america!
If you are a GA resident, there is no need to vote. Bush dominates this state, that's why Kerry focuses much more on other states. He won't set foot here to campaign. The presidential vote here is just a civic duty I guess...no real effect on the outcome of the election.
Exactly... Georgians are all bush lovers and no one can change that. I'm proud to be a Pennsylvanian and I'm proud to vote Kerry.
COUCH PEOPLE!! What is it like out there. How are the professors at what time slots? A reply would be much appreciated.
What a great idea, let's encourage people not to vote! That will make everything better! That way John Kerry will get enough votes in Georgia to bring America one step closer to certain doom by just assuming that Bush will win. Vote bush.

- listen guys. discussing politics is fine but stupid name-calling is not. please do not stoop to this. you are in college, not on talk-radio. im going to ask the person who posted this last image to delete it. sk
I just wanted to say that I posted this
Don't like Bush or Kerry? Vote for Michael Badnarik
Vote Libertarian
not as a joke, but as a serious option for people. So, whoever thought that it would be clever to add onto my message by saying "and throw your vote away", I just wanted to address you. Just because someone doesn't share the same political views as you and chooses to vote for what they TRULY believe in instead of voting for someone who is "better than the other candidate" doesn't give you the right to downgrade that vote to meaning nothing. I didn't make a comment of BUSH SUCKS, or KERRY IS A DOUCHE BAG. I wanted to present an option to people who don't know about the libertarian party, which I'm sure you don't and you just decided to add your clever comment anyway without clicking on the link. I don't care if anyone agrees with the libertarian views, it's just a link to learning....that's what we're here for.
understood... it was just a joke
seriously, don't get your panties in a wad. There is no need to get that fired up about a hardly visible third party... Honestly, it is okay with all of us if you want to toss your vote away on that third party. It is your vote to do with as you like. So say farewell, and cast it away...
Yeah, I've got a triangle up my butt, my panties in a wad, you got your laughs.
Is it just me or are the final exam questions on articles not on the list?
- we will start posting the final exam questions starting this wednesday. we will continue to post until november 21. sk
So, is anybody going to dress up for Halloween?
If so, are you dressing up on Friday or next Monday?
Monday, then everyone will wonder why I am a day late.
I am hoping no one has played a cruel joke on me for not going to lecture today, but I have heard that the reading summaries are now going to constitute 60% of the final grade. If this is the case, it is completely underhanded for the change to be retroactive. Students understood the weight of the reading summaries and could choose whether they wanted to do them or not or how much effort they put into the ones they did, possibly gaining more utility, to use and economics term, by spending their time doing something else instead. To make the change retroactive is to undermine those students who gave consideration to the weight of the summaries before not doing them. If it is necessary that the reading summaries constitute 60% of the grade, all of the summaries should be weighted to 20%, with an additional 40% placed on future summaries.
don't you wish you had given them more effort now?
i agree, but without pedex, what should the rest of the grade be based on? if we can come up with a solution, we should petition or something.
I have 16 credits and had time to do all summaries and studios to the best of my ability. If I can do this and get good grades so can you. NO EXCUSES.
School is not supposed to be, "hey surprise! Look, you fail because you didn't know how important your previous effort was going to be! This will teach you a lesson in working hard all of the time!" There are supposed to be expectations up-front. It is incredibly unreasonable to modify the syllabus after drop day.
Honestly, would you have dropped the class if they had announced this before drop day just because you can't handle 60% of your grade weighing on READING and SUMMARIZING ONCE A WEEK. Of course, I agree with it not being a reasonable decision to announce this now, but either way, they have to come up with that other percentage of the grade, so no matter what they assign now it's going to be something that they announced after drop day. They can't just hand us a 100 for that percentage...although we might consider that as a suggestion.
Sounds good to me, but highly unlikely, unfortunately. However, I think it is a little unfair, too, because I know that I for one would have put a lot more effort into my summaries had I known their value. What might be a good idea is for them to break the two sets up. For instance, say the ones we had done to date all counted for the original weight, and the ones from now on count as the value of the pedex project. That way people won't panic, and it won't be like a death blow to their morale... and in some cases, their grades...
It seems like our TAs haven't graded our reading summaries since September. How do we suppose to know our progress and comments for our summaries?
By the way, YAHOO!! Review next Monday!
Hey, I like that idea of splitting up the grades. That way we can put more effort into this set...

I have to agree with some of the complaints against changing the weight of the summaries. We should have the opportunity to rewrite/have some of the summaries regraded, have the new set of summaries weighted more than the previous set and/or etc. Either way, according to number five of the Student Bill of Academic Rights,we have "The right to receive a syllabus for each course at the first class meeting. The syllabus should include an outline of the course objectives, criteria used in determining the course grade, and any other requirements. Students should be informed of any changes made to the syllabus with reasonable time to adjust to these changes." I think that we as students of COA 1060 have the right to appeal/"friendly amend" these changes to the syllabus.
- Also, nowhere on the "overview" of the course does it state that the syllabus is tentantive or subject to minor changes. Maybe we should have another project to do instead of PedEx?..
- Some TAs grade tougher than others, does that mean that we are SOL?
I would say just hope that if you have a hard-grading TA, you have an easy-grading studio prof. Or vice-versa. In my case, I think I have average for both 1060 and 1011. At least I hope so.
Are our grades curved within each TA group or the class overall?
Are they curved at all???
WE WILL REVISIT THE GRADE DISTRIBUTION, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION POINTS MADE ABOVE, TO ENSURE FAIRNESS. SK
I want to drop the grade distribution topic, yet I would like to add to someone's comment. In particular, my TA AND my 1011 teacher...they are both EXTREMELY strict and not very fair when it comes to grading. I feel summaries are important, yet I do not think that they should make or break your grade. For instance, my TA corrected me on my grammar and took off for that (I do not see a problem with that), YET his grammar during his presentation and in the text was not correct. Therefore, I see a problem.
it's the Whinebox.
Im dancing on sunshine, whoa-oh....and don't it feel good?

Why can't we have the same instructor next semester? I think it would be smarter to do it that way, because then we could just get started without all of the trouble of getting to know names, and getting the rules down. I mean, we need to optimize our time, so let's keep the same teachers!
We like our instructor..in fact I think we have one of the best instructors there are. I just hope i don't get a certain instructor next semester..
I too like my instructor, but he or she (purposely ambiguous) is extremely hard. I have worked my arse off and been rewarded with quality work and a probably case of mono (from the lack of sleep). As much as I like my instructor, I am ready for a change. I am sorry if you instructor is easy and you like it that way, but a change might expose everyone to a different way of approaching the material. Take this opportunity and... Jump On It!
ok, if we don't have a lecture class next semester, what is this wed. class from 1-2 that is on the schedule that we have to register for? there is a class i want to take during that time so please let us know!
coa 1012 is 4-credit hours. 3 credit hours for 9 lab contact hours, 1 credit hour for 1 lecture contact hour. when you register for coa 1012, you will not be able to register for another class at that time.
regarding instructors: its important for all of you to be exposed to different approaches; thats the way of the world and college.
do we have an actual lecture class every wednesday though?
whoever stole my $13 strafmore board is a BITCH...you need to come to my face and confess like a man damnit
and you know who I am and you should only, because my namne was written all over the bag that holding the board.
Is it going to be possible to keep the same group of people in next semesters stuido, because I love my group!
What We Talk About When We Talk About Architecture
GREAT talkin!
can we get a new TA next semester also?
I'm going to need your decision on how the weights of the summaries are going to be handled. I'm getting infuriated with my TA and his/her grading/lack of commenting and do not wish for the grades of the summaries to be a majority of my grade...especially since the syllabus that was handed out to us at the beginning of the semester stated otherwise.
Hi. my name is...What? My name is...Who? my name is...chika chika Don Quixote.
I still think the original 30% for summaries should encompass the entire semester's worth of summaries, with an additional weight added on to future ones. Cutting the initial 30% off now is still a mockery of the syllabus, which would have allowed students who faltered at the beginning to diffuse those grades that compose the 30% with better ones down the line; this new plan still puts more weight on efforts based on the original. I haven't done the math, but this 30%-30% may be the same difference as an overall 60%, just with a different look. I appreciate the effort to resolve this discrepancy and that the cancellation of PedEx has complicated things, but I do not yet find grade breakdown to be fair.
i do
the way i see it, sk and co. have done the thing that has the best mix of fairness, adherence to syllabus, and overcoming the pedex problem that one could allow given our set of conditions. Of course, he could always just make attendance the other part of the grade in place of pedex. That sounds wonderful to me.
- nothing may have been done if this 30-30 is exactly the same as a 60% whole like I'm starting to think. Granted, there may be a different number of assignments in each set, changing it a little bit.
Suck it up and get over it! Stop worrying about what the syllabus said. Summaries are a lot less time consuming than PedEx so why are you complaining? Life is not fair!
ok - it said originaly that the summaries would be 33% - and those original summaries still are - therefore, they hold to the syllabus. Now, instead of the 33% for pedex, the 33% is being replaced by a new set of summaries. it holds - if you didnt do your summaries, well, then that is your fault - make sure you do them this time
so how come no one asks any questions in class. its like when yall are together in one room, yall dumb down. there was so much you could have asked maureen today. but no questions suggests no curiousity or capacity to imagine her world. sk
i think she did a pretty good job covering her world during her presentation. plus, we are all tired.
maybe, nobody cares
- i dont think questions are simply for getting information; she did a pretty good job covering her world, therefore, there is no more to know about it. questions are about thinking, relating things, speculating. . . and if you dont ask a question how do you know that she told you all there is to know. sk
i always have lots of questions i want to ask, but feel weird when I'd be the only person who would ask, and do so on a consistent basis. like if I asked all the questions I had after each lecture, it would look like I'm trying to brown-nose, look good, or something. then people would react like i'm trying to do that and would hate me for keeping us in class longer, especially if there was a chance we'd get out early. case-in-point= today. i feel restricted
- dont ever let the mob censor you
Cough, cough
Yea, so anyways...we basically have to plan our whole schedule around studio...so, om...why cant we view the proposed studio class times on oscar yet? Some of us need to go ahead and plan our schedules as best as we can...
- they should be up there. there are four time slots for non-couch sections, same as this fall: mwf 9-12; mwf 3-6; tr 8:30-1:00; and tr 1:30-6:00. there are three couch section time slots: mwf 9-12; tr 8:30-1:00; tr 1:30-6:00. couch folks should have given their current instructors their preferred times by now. sk
So we would have been done with summaries now if we had been doing PedEx?
Where are the sample final exam questions?
This 60% to 30-30 thing? It'd end up being the same grade. If you got an average of 50 on the first set of summaries and an average of 100 on the second set, and a 100 on the final, it'd be an 85 either way. And I don't understand how you guys could consider 33% of your grade not that important in the first place especially since this final sounds pretty difficult.

hey, y'all wanna know something really exciting? we were told our review was gonna be nov. 9 (we're in couch & were gonna have it after all the first years went) then it got moved back a week, so everyone's having to rush to get through just to get everything done... so when all our stuff sucks, please don't point and laugh... & sabir, come on, give us a little more notice next time geez...
- had nothing to do with any of this. ask your instructor about the common schedule. ex 2 schedule did change, but we added a day, not move the review up. sk
- I was wondering why you people were still on models.
Does anyone know if we are going to have lecture on Wednesday November 24 (the day before Thanksgiving)?
- no lecture. thats been on the schedule since the beginning. sk
- AND NO STUDIO, 9-12 or 3-6, on wednesday nov 24 either. sk

definitely an upgrade!
nah, just kidding, big guy!
read a paper by sabir!
Hey what about allocating some of the grade to attendance like say 10%. you might see an increase in the students in class.
- i think attendance already counts for some - at least they take off if you aren't there

Hey everybody, here's a little update on 1060's favorite government dept. One shop owner found out that making Rubix cube knock-offs is apparently a matter of homeland security:

why can't all lectures be like today?! that was freakin' awesome!

If you're such a die-hard Kerry fan, check this site out.
Bush supporters (like me) will find it quite amusing as well.
- You know these arguments only sound good to people that are already going to vote for Bush anyway - that agree with the certain logic used; the things it describes are perfectly agreeable to others. It is very ineffective in any attempts it is making to 'scare' votes from Kerry; it only encourages close-mindedness in order to make Bush supporters feel secure in their vote. Notice the misogynist attitudes toward Teresa Kerry and the placement of a video that suggest a homosexual relationship between Kerry and Edwards in the middle of a page attacking them.
- Which is exactly why I sanitized this page of political bickering. No one's mind is going to be changed by people slinging mud. I know it's always been a popularity contest, but isn't the process supposed to be about lifting yourself above the rest, rather than demonizing your opponent?

Do we have to summarize all three readings for 11.03 ?????
- "Summarize all Required Readings separately." - the assignments page
3 required readings, 3 separate summaries
Obsessive-Compulsive Freak-Out [cleanup]
I'm sick of the state of the Couch studio. I will begin cleaning at 6:00am on monday morning, as to have it clean for our guest reviewers; by this time, most everyone should have finished model work (making a bloody mess of the place), though I expect a few last-minute folks to still be there. Realize that if you leave things on the floor or desks, they may be moved or even thrown away. Please come by and help or try to keep the studio clean between monday and tuesday reviews. I don't have a broom yet, so if anyone could bring one, that would be great.
- so studio 200's jumpin on the bandwagon too, eh? just ta let ya know, the fabulous section d2 had one this morning. aaahhhhhh. it was beautiful. like smelling coffee after an all-nighter in studio. (or seeing calvin's bright and cheery face crammed full of krystals. )

we seriously have 3 summaries due the day after our review? do we not get a break? at least for a day?
I HATE READING SUMMARIES!!!! AHHHH!!
Have you guys even looked at the reading summaries? They're like, 3 pages long each and they're not hard to understand and they're even kind of interesting.
yeah, chill out. it took me about 30 minutes to read all 3 summaries. I'm greatful for this week's summaries.
crazy squirrels...

SUGGESTION FOR THE TA'S OF COA 1060:
How about giving suggestions in order to help improve our reading summary grades. This would be VERY beneficial since this is like our whole grade now. Thanks :)
Those of you that do not have class in Couch need to stay out of the studio there. I have said before that the students in Couch are already getting the shaft, and it's pure crap if we can't get a table over here because you're too lazy to walk over to your nicer studio at CoA. I'm sure you're over here trashing the place even more and are the ones leaving doors propped open so that you can get back in here.
Can we also do something about the parking situation at Couch. There is no place to park if we go over there on the weekends or late at night without getting a ticket.
- put money in the meter? (no derailing, jeeze)
Can anyone access next semester's studio classes in "look up classes to add?" Because I can't!!!
- once again: all of you in coa 1011 who are taking studio in room 150 should register for one of the four sections available: mwf 9-12; mwf 3-6; tr 8:30-1:00; tr 1:30-6:00. once registration closes we will subdivide these sections and issue you permits so that you can RE-register for the correct section. same as you did earlier this fall. (students in couch sections have already been issued permits for coa 1012 sections).
Something to ponder before you vote tomorrow...

Think of the conflict of interest a President would have whose wife owns business interests in all of these countries.... I don't think John Kerry's Vietnam service is going to make people look the other way on this stuff.
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW THIS WOULD IMPACT HIS PRESIDENCY?
Bush and Kerry both suck

Has anyone done the reading summaries yet? GEEZ they werent gonna let us off easy...3 summaries per week? Damn you federal government...just let us do our work...we are but poor ga tech students trying to impress an unrelenting tyrant! (AKA Sabir)
We've spent lots of time discussing W vs. Kerry....what about gay rights and marriage–that's on the state of Georgia ballot today...Here's my opinion (PLEASE, when you respond against my opinion, which i'm sure the majority of you will, try your hardest not to offend others with your choice of terms)
"Although I am not homosexual and don't fully understand homosexuality and homosexual persons, I feel that if we create a constitutional amendment that denies rights to certain groups of people but affords those same rights to other groups of people, we are completely going against the legal framework that our great nation is and was built upon. Nevertheless, the majority of the educated and uneducated population in Georgia will vote in favor of the consitutional amendment banning gay marriage. This is because they are like me–they don't understand homosexuality. However, unlike me, because they don't understand it, they frown upon persons who are gay and feel that we should ignore this minority of our population. By voting in favor of this amendment today, we will unleash a neverending legal and social battle that will ultimately (whether it be months, years, or decades) result in the repealing of the amendment. However, along the way, this "battle" will cost our state government millions of dollars in litigation that could and should be much better spent on other more important things–such as state-funded research institutes like the one we are currently attending. For this reason, I plan to vote against the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in the State of Georgia."
Has anyone (a girl) lost their art box? There's one in the first floor girl's bathroom of the new arch building that's been there for at least the last three days (Saturday, Sunday, Monday).
Has anyone else been told "PREQ and TEST SCORE ERROR" when they were trying to register for fund of des II?
That bit on Kerry's conflict of interests was quite amusing considering those of our current administration. I figgured the exploytation of globalization by big business was something Republicans would be into anyway.
Enough with the politics already the election is almost over and Bush is going to win so you democrats need to get over it

When was the latest summary assignment posted?! Me and a lot of other people are just finding out about these 3 summaries we have to do since we have been so busy with EX 2 and reviews. Having to do this much work is ridiculous.
- it was posted six days ago. there are three articles, yes, but they are short, 3 to 5 pages long. sk
Sabir,
while I cannot agree that these assignments are ridiculous, I do believe that there is a good point made above. It would be very helpful and greatly appreciated if these assignments would be announced in class at the time of, or shortly before, they are assigned. This generation, while savvy to technology, is not yet used the increasing integration of it in education. The only example many of us have been given is that assignments are announced in class without exception. This precedence does not constitute an excuse, however, a little aid in this integration would be greatly appreciated. - JB
- thank you for your comments. that a second set of summaries were underway was announced in class. but i could have been more explicit. given the reviews we'll change the due date to this friday. the due dates for the remaining summaries are posted on the assignment page. sk
thank you Sabir! you rock my world!
I hate the rain
yeah... swimming back from class is not fun
I'm afraid to go to sleep and awake to find a President elect that I don't like.
um.... back to the whole summaries counting way more of our grade! i'm still confused. is the average of all of the summaries counting the first 30% and then just the second set counting the other 30% or is the first set 30 and the second set also 30? if this is the case i'm goin to fail this class because i was planning on improving my summaries grade over the second half of the semester. yes i should have done a better job from the start but it's too late now so that argument is void. i think we should be given the option of either having 1. the average of our summaries count the original 30% and then replacing the ped ex portion of our grade with a research paper or something to that extent or 2. having the two sets of summaries count 60% like it is now. this way it's fair for everyone and those who were counting on improving thier summaries grade in the later part of the semester will still have that chance.
- I was trying to argue this and started to get the idea that we would have been done with reading summaries once PedEx started, but no one confirmed that
- here it is once again, clear and fair (in fact very fair):
Summaries part one: 35% (same as before);
Summaries part two: 30% (replacing PedEx);
Final Exam: 35% (same as before).
sk
Page three of "Good Citizenship" is a little messed up and hard to read. Can we get another copy?
what's the deal with killing our documentation day? didn't somebody think of this when ex. 2 was made longer??
You might want to consider documenting along the way, rather than at the end when everyone is fighting for resources. Just a suggestion.
An interesting statistic from the DI ranking of Architecture schools:
What Arch Skills Are Worst in New Hires
Sketching skills - 61%
Business/practice knowledge - 57%
Detailing knowledge - 54%
Oral / written communication skills - 52%
The moral of the story: All this writing and drawing we have you do is practical knowledge. mark d
and kerry concedes to bush
...and it's the end of the world as we know it (i don't feel fine)
How is it the end of the world as you know it?? Bush has been president for the last four years...it is a continuation of the world as you know it. At least Kerry didn't drag his defeat out...ala Al Gore. (But I am sure glad Gore invented this internet thing!)
quit it with your political cuts. get on with your life.
I think the most interesting thing about this whole thing is that it's the first time since 1982 that a candidate has gotten in with the popular vote and the electoral college vote. between then adn now it's only been with the electoral vote.
Listen... while i agree with you that denying gays certain rights is in itself wrong, we shouldn't change the basic institutions that define our society. We should allow gays all the rights of a marriage couple (except addoption: there isn't enough evidence to support the fact that it wouldn't be scarring psychologically to be raised by two gays) but it shouldn't be called marriage it should remain a civil union.
are the summeries due today or friday?
thank god the election is over and Bush won now we can just get on with our lives and not have to listen to loud outspoken democrats
People can be so rude...
So, summaries pushed back to friday now?
^LOOK!!!
Cooldaze is Storming? - BUSH must have WON
hurray for wednesdays!
are the summeries due on friday, the assignment pages says they are.
Is anybody tired of all this political debate and interested in a informal religious dissucussion/debate. It is one of my favorite things to talk about and just wanted to see if I could get a little or large group together friday afternoon after lecture or something. Thanks.
If the assignment page says it is...then it is. You can also scroll back some paragraphs and find that sabir pushed back the date.
"-thank you for your comments. that a second set of summaries were underway was announced in class. but i could have been more explicit. given the reviews we'll change the due date to this friday. the due dates for the remaining summaries are posted on the assignment page. sk"
I'm sick of people whining just because the instructors/professors/TA's don't let them have their way and more time to procrastinate.
cooldaze are all rainy up there. can we see some sunlight?
Is it just me or are the sample final exam questions on articles we have not been assigned?
When are the final exam questions going to be posted?
Go check your email kiddo.
Is anybody tired of all this political debate and interested in a informal religious dissucussion/debate. It is one of my favorite things to talk about and just wanted to see if I could get a little or large group together friday afternoon after lecture or something. Thanks.
I hope you will excuse my scepticism, but those who wish to engage in religious debate / discussion often are not searching for discourse as much as a forum for preaching.
Amen.
true, then there are those who are. I would like to. Friday would be great. where would you like to meet up?
don't you have anything better to do????.... seriously
Great! How about the free speech area. It is the other open amplitheater near the fine arts building (I think). And yes i would agree most people would use it at as a form for preaching. But honsestly i would like it to be it simply to be a time for people to question, challenge, encourage, and learn; whether your a muslim, buddhist (not really a religion, but way of life), or atheist.
Anything better to do? Well seeing that 99% of the world believes in God, Islam is have an enormous amount of converts, and the calender we've used for the last 2000 years is centered on Jesus Christ. If you dont believe anything, i think you should know whats out there so you know why you dont believe. And if you do believe, i think you should actually know what you are saying instead of giving a inncorrect view. That being said, disscussion and debate, for me at least, it is quite entertaining, intellectually challenging, and you could to meet pretty cool people.
Somebody deleted half the soapbox.
- now why would someone do that? thanks for the heads up. ill ask the cooldazemeister to fix it. sk
- Don't worry, I already fixed it
Fact or fiction: no studio nor lecture the Wednesday before Thanksgiving break?
one more time: no studio, no lecture wednesday before txgiving. sk
Sabir... are we supposed to e-mail you with the time slots we want for studio? The reason I ask is because my studio professor said they had nothing to do with it, and that is what your e-mail told us to do... So, what now?
- my email asked you all to register for a coa 1012 section. only those in couch this fall were asked for time preferences so that we could issue them section-specific permits. sk
I've got a question. GA Tech gives us all space for a website right? At Prism or whatever? I can't figure out where to go to set that up. Can someone just point me in the right direction? I went to the prism.gatech.edu...and I didn't recognize anything to where I could edit my own. Thanks.
Okay, the assignments page says that the reading summaries are due on the 5th at one place and the 3rd at another. I can only assume that the 5th is correct, but it would be nice to know if I am right.
- You all should listen when the sk posts on the soapbox. For the third time now:
"given the reviews we'll change the due date to this friday. the due dates for the remaining summaries are posted on the assignment page. sk"

Interesting. probably false, probably the work of a conspiracy theory nut, but interesting none the less
There are a lot of websites that cover these facts. They are all derived from pictures, eye-witness accounts and from the fact that a plane was never found and from the fact that the hole wasn't big enough for a 757 to fit through and the fact that the over 5,000 gallons of fuel in the plane didn't burn up the furniture, a book lying open, and a computer still intact and visible in the picture. Even if you don't believe it, you have to question why the government would confiscate all of the video that filmed the actual event.
Damn..... HW on a Friday night..... this sucks..... oh well.... almost done...
Yep, i guess there's a first time for everything...
- remember - it was originally due on Wednesday. You could have always just finished it then :)
Who else out there thinks that architecture is seriously no longer any fun? I mean, I know it has been on the verge of being no fun for a long time now, and on some days has even reached that point, but who agrees that it has officially hit the low point and is no longer any fun?
i concur..but we have hardly scratched the surface
Honestly guys...what did you actually expect when you chose to major in architechture (or BC or ID) at freakin GEORGIA TECH? Did you really think that you wouldn't pull some all nighters and get crapped on by your instructors? If you don't like it now, you'd better get out or suck it up because I highly doubt it gets better. (BTW, I'm a freshman just like most of you guys and even though it's tough, I still love arch.)
it depends on what you define as fun. if getting smashed or watching tv is "fun" then probably not. if you value making beautiful drawings and objects, learning skills that precious few other people have, if you value creating things that may make the world a better place, and that one day, you can point to and tell your grandchildren that you created, you too may find it, eventually, fun. it has to be about the love. you can't phone it in. nothing worth doing is easy.
what about getting smashed and making beautiful drawings and objects? does that count? :)
what about taking many hours to do drawing that I thought was beautiful and getting bitched at? does that count? :)
I can make more beautiful things in an hour, actively making decisions rather than just going through tedious craft shit.
It is all part of the same process. The tedious part is not separate from making decisions, it is directly related to it. Craft gives you the ability and authority to carry out the decisions you make as well as making your decisions more informed. Design is not just whipping out a perfect, fully realized idea, it is hard work and making is just as important as deciding.

how many weeks do we have left before finals?!
"Too often we take individuals with eighteen years of experience and strip them of the values, rather than cultivate them for effective applicatioin in design practice." - Katherine McCoy

i hate to be the killjoy and all, but conspiracy theories are usually a load of crap... this includes the Pentagon theory that was posted before... check out this link for the rest of the story and pictures that tie up loose ends
Pentagon Urban Legend
Nice mouth on you guys. Sure glad I tuned into the soapbox tonight.
- shit, you should just go and censor everything like some people do. Oh yeah...blow me.
Guys - please watch your language on the soapbox - see etiquette & guidelines page. KJH
Sorry folks, a plane did crash into the Pentagon, and the Twin Towers. Not too many people think that did not happen, though there are some out there.
Thats the funny thing about conspiracy theories, they are impossible to disprove. You can never disprove a negative. As you provide more facts the more all-encompasing the conspiracy becomes, based as it is on suspicion, and not actual reality.
Lets try one at home for fun. "I think the School of Architecture has been infiltrated by the CIA." Just try to prove this is not so. Betcha can't!
I will bet that all the instructors (on the state government payroll, by their own admission) will deny that they are, in fact, CIA agents, just as you would expect them to, sneaky agents that they are. Add to this their supposed "education" at suspiciously far away locations before they got here. Can anyone actually prove definitively they went to this "University of Virginia"? (also a government funded school, located near CIA headquarters in Langley, VA) Hmmmm..how far does this conspiracy reach? Conspiracy theories can be seductive and entertaining, but they are not anything to waste serious brain power on. Agent D
just wanted to say I totally appreciate the post above. thanks. I have no doubt that conspiracy theories are a bunch of hokey. d
and on a separate note, I just got back from camping on teh appalachian trail, hiking the appalachina trail, and spending a whole afternoon raking leaves for a kindly old lady who lives by herself in the north georgia mountains. if I could feel any happier, satisfied, or assured that what I'm doing in architecture no matter how ridiculous oor tough I think it is, I'm doing the totally right thing, I'd bust my face open. If you need a new perspective, do something totally out of your way for someone else. nothing could make you happier.
god bless you guys,
d

As a substitude for Ped Ex, COA 1060 students will continue with weekly readings and summaries." -Technique
Yay!:D Our lovely reading summaries make the front page! Be sure to check out the assignments. We have 2 summaries due Wednesday. And go ahead and write those ex2 reflections if you haven't :)
Is there any chance the TAs could update grades on the summaries? I havent gotten grades updated since September 17?!?!? Would sure help to know if I'm doing everything right.
"I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceedingly broad." - Proverbs
In other words, thank God exercise two is over, because our work as a class was definitely beginning to fall off due to the fact that we looked at those blocks for far too long...
Is there any chance the remaining summaries can be be due on Sundays, please????
Sabir, sent you an e-mail about this, but you might be reading the soapbox, who knows?? is the second required reading going to be available in PDF format, or will 200 people have to go to the main library and fight for one book??
ej
they are in PDF format, go check Online Reserves on the Library website
if only it could snow in the world of coolDAZE. I sure do miss the snow.
sigh... me too! Thats what breaks are for I guess. And who knows, maybe we'll get blessed by another blizzard in Atlanta, hasnt been one for about 11 years now, its about time! (Blizzards in atlanta consist of a foot of snow, where as a foot of snow where I'm from is called "tuesday."
- oh and let me guess...where you're from, they don't cancel school for a foot of snow?
- depends, but usually not, although we did have a wind day last year, which was amusing, bad ice storm somehow changed directions in the last minute, no school and no weather. kinda burnt out the school on canceling though. at least i'm used to tech's policy i guess.
where i'm from it snows a lot :(

SK, if you don't mind...could you settle a debate...just where are you from exactly?
- Studio B knows! We found this out a while back. If you're that curious, go do a thorough google search. It's there. Google knows everything ;)

folks,
please take a few minutes to fill out this survey. it should take you less than five minutes. it will help us enormously in trying to get a snapshot of the common first year.
we will keep the site open for a few more days.

It's one thing when the coa computers crash while trying to do digital documentation, but it's another story when your own computer crashes while trying to do it...and you have no one to blame but yourself. 'sigh'
So, over a month after the first one was due, my TA just finished grading our last set of summaries. Apparently, and slightly ironically, good writing is insignificant compared to punctuality.
Yea... they don't have to meet with groups for Ped-Ex anymore so they should have time to grade these summaries. The last grade I have is from October 3. How am I supposed to know how to improve my grade if they never grade stuff.
I don't want to sit hear and complain, but it still would be nice to see why we get the grade we do instead of them just assigning us any grade they pull out of their hats. I know this probably won't happen since they haven't been doing it all semester, but it is only fair for us to argue the grade when we are not EVER given any corrections in respect to trying to improve our grades.
Are we really having a final in 1060?
Why wouldn't we? The questions haven't been posted for it yet, though.
my point exactly!
Maybe someone convinced Sabir that having a final is CRAZY!!
Maybe instead of complaining about your TA, you should actually speak to him/her. They seem to be reasonable people (at least mine is), and I doubt they sit around and read the soapbox. If one TA is really not posting grades or comments, maybe a little push from us would work. My TA doesn't post extensive comments, but enough for me to know what is wrong with my summaries. It might just be one, in which case maybe it's an issue for Sabir?
I've got an idea...screw a final exam...our lives are going to be oh-so-interesting these last few weeks with this last excercise being squeezed in...and seriously, Thanksgiving Break, anyone? NEWSFLASH to the CFY instructors: Some of our parents would like us AT HOME to eat turkey with them, not spending the whole break in studio making Brittain runs for congeled dressing and lumpy mashed potatoes!
Does the "Weeding Out" really need to be taking place at the dead end of the semester? C'MON SABIR! Seriously, ya'll should have left a "comments" area on that freakin survey....believe me, you'd get plenty of honesty!
So the TA's don't put any effort into grading our summaries AND they don't keep a constant eye on the Soapbox?!?! What, exactly, is their purpose then?
believe it or not.. we do read the soapbox, and I appreciate the comments. reading somewhat 45 summaries and grading them does require some effort, and I sincerely believe that the TAs don't just "pull the grades out from a hat." however, I apologize for the lack of feedbacks and comments. if you have any questions (or doubts) about the past grades, please ask or write to your TA. I am willing to respond, and I am sure that the other TAs are too. regarding the to-be-posted summaries, I will do my best to give you more feedbacks besides the grading. myung
please, people.

1. please check assignments for next set of readings (readings should be available by noon latest)
2. please keep the soapbox clean

$50+ of museum board up in smoke (literally)oh yeah, make sure you have your sound on... it's not as good without it
I want to thank whoever finally got that blasted superhero dance thing off of the soapbox.
I agree! it was cool for the first day... after that it was just annoying
wow, I would just like to know why you would burn all that hard work you did? i don't care how much i hated my cube, i'm gonna keep that thing forever just as a reminder of how hard i worked my first semester at tech.
I just hope you documented your cube before you burned it. (D'oh!!!)
Actually, destroying beautiful models has a proud tradition in architecture school. Think of it as catharsis, or better yet, divorcing yourself from the object. It is important not to fall in love with your own work, you should be critical. Remember, love is blind. Anyhow, models usually fall apart in a year or so.
my cube will be burned bc no matter how hard i worked on it it looks like crap and when i look at it i get angry
folks:
1. please check assignments for next set of readings (readings should be available by 10:00 AM)
2. please keep the soapbox clean
3. please check your email inbox for important messages regarding registration
4. please keep it real
5. please complete the short, five-minute survey today
What ever happened to reading both, but only summarizing one?
what? burninate them?
awww...poor cube. You shouldn't have done that. I'm sure you put too many hours into it to just destroy it. My cube's going in a glass case to be cherished forever! Oh well, nice production though.
I thought the final exam questions were going to be posted on the 9th? I'm getting a little anxious, because the date for them being posted keeps getting pushed back, and then they never appear. I know sk is extremely busy, but could we at least get a couple so we can go ahead and get a start on them? many thanks
I agree. We need to begin preparing for the exam ASAP!!! I know I am going to have a hard time preparing for all the questions on time even if they were posted today.
i agree too. and i am/we are working on them today. the first set will be up tomorrow.
in the meantime review your lecture notes, reading notes. this will help. sk
Dear Lida Cunningham,
I know you must be really busy as a grad student and everything, but could you please post some grades for our reading summaries? It's been almost eight weeks since you posted any grades.
Thanks,
a student in your section
Dear Student In My Section,
Subtle hint taken. Check the course folder for grades in the morning.
Thanks,
Lida Cunningham
Thanks, Lida,
You're awesome, and the soapbox rules!!
i know thia has probably been announced and all, but I need some final verification...
are studio and lecture cancelled on the wednesday before thanksgiving?
YES!! Check the schedule...plus, it's only been announced a thousand times!
Does anybody understand our "civic warfare" reading? I'm having a lot of trouble understanding what the author is trying to say. She seems to try to impress me by using a lot of words - not necessarily big ones, but just a lot of them. Her argument is getting lost in all these words! Any help, please let me know!
ashley myhal
Dear Lida Cunningham,
You are my favorite TA! Happy Monday.
Sincerely, Kristin
did anyone see that guy pass out last night in studio is it just me or is all of this work getting dangerous
yeah, i was working next to a girl at about 3:30am the other night when she fell right out of her chair! it's getting dangerous, but i also think some people are a little out of hand. i still don't think the all-nighter life style is really necessary
Some people have OCD and feel that they need to stay up 24 hours working on unnecessary work..even redoing other group members work. Now they are putting that on themselves.
What is the timeslot at 1-1:55 of COA 1012 going to be used for? Another mandatory Lecture?
- coa 1012 is 4 credit hours: so following the gatech formula, 9 lab/studio contact hours equal 3 credit hours, 1 lecture contact hour equals 1 credit hour for a total of 4 credit hours. sk
From now on, all of your studios (undergraduate and graduate) will include a one-hour lecture period. Some professors actually lecture, and some use it as discussion, or just additional studio time.
- not to mention blocking you from registering from classes at that time that would actually take place three days a week and leaving gaps in your daily schedule on the days you don't have it
Question... What ever happened to only having to summarize one article, and reading the others? I quite liked that format...
say it here sorryeverybody.com
hillary clinton is my role model.
Dream is destiny . . .
Can we cut the propaganda and make this a constructive soapbox please?
I agree...the election is OVER. Get over it. Let's talk about something else.
Summaries:
I feel most of the authors of the articles we read convolute their sentences and pull out unnecessarily difficult vocabulary. Usually the ideas they present could be said in a MUCH clearer and CONCISE format….
I think the theme of many of the articles is “Look how smart and intellectual I am!”
I agree - maybe that's why we have to write clear, concise summaries of the articles - to make some sense of them.
true...but it also could be a really good oportunity to learn to use your own language better
sk, in "Living Apart Together..." is Blair A. Ruble M or F? Shall we refer to the author as He or She?...thanks
For all of the MWF studios out there...
6 Studios left!
WAHOOO!
turkeys and pilgrims rox my sox
How many people out there are changing majors out of the College of Architecture?
- Can you say "all aboard the M-Train"?
- YES
- I've been out so long I hardly remember my first few studios this year. All aboard the Civil Engineering bus.
- yay for CE!!! and no, i wasn't BC before - i just didn't realize how much i was going to hate architecture...and studio...and i didn't realize that rob hudgins is the best advisor i've talked to so far...maybe the best at tech?
Hooray for those of us sticking it out!
hahahaha to you (thi is for the civil engineering person).... from a former engineering major who transferred to COA: yeah right, good luck with the calc 3 & physics 2 & the 5 million maths & sciences you're gonna be taking... i promise you, spending 10 hours drawing is 10 times better than spending 1 hour doing CS homework... & if you're civil, that probably means you were going to be BC, which means after this year you basically would have the easieast major at this school... hahahahaha sucks to be you
- I agree, math and science are boring. Looking at social and design issues suits me better; however, its not for everyone.

Sabir is incredible!
- this one sucks even more than the others
- they are getting a bit formulaic.
- agreed. you should at least look for new photos. check google, i'm sure there's bound to be some there.
Blair Ruble is male:

Has anyone started reading the articles for this week yet? Im have read half of one and I am still not sure what their point is. Is anyone else really confused?
I am, don't worry. I was able to make my way thru it but the summary may not make sense. I really tried on the summary, and i really hope my TA can see that.
Does anybody know when is the final review?? Is it on Dec 1st or Dec 3rd?? Or Maybe both days?? I'm kinda confused??
dec10
- dec 10 is the coa 1060 final. coa 1011 reviews are scheduled for dec 2 for tr and dec 1 and dec 3 for mwf. tho mwf instructors may decide to have the reviews on dec 3 only. these reviews will be formatted more as an exhibition/discussion. all reviews will be held in the atrium since the rest of the building will be used for non cfy reviews. sk
has anyone seen a green beach chair? our group is missing it and is in trouble...
"And if the old city had so often been compared to a forest, it may have been because it was an organic accretion of independent gestures by many creatures, rather than the implementation of a master plan made by one, IT HAD NOT BEEN DESIGNED BUT GROWN."
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
has anyone seen a green beach chair? our group is missing it and is in trouble...
I on the other hand came to the school b/c of interest in BC not looking at difficulty level or anything. I don't know why some refer to it as "the easiest major” I don't think working in the field of construction can be considered "easy".
if u don't like studio that's one thing...but only do bc if you really wanna go into construction work. don't think of it as a cop-out degree...or a way to slack off.
has anyone seen a green beach chair? our group is missing it and is in trouble...
just think...what we're reading is the summary of a whole book. So we're summarizing a summary. I'm glad we don't have to read the it. if we're having this much trouble with the introduction, think about what the entire thing would be like.
- read for the big ideas. both are talking about the relationship of democracy, civic life, and the variety/diversity of cities. one focuses on a particular period in american history, the other on cities transitioning from authoritarian regimes. sk
- I would do it if we got 50 extra points for it
- what if we read the book, and wrote a 700-1000 word report summarizing (more in-depthly)the main points & included page references and such? maybe 45 extra points, sk? :)
Now hold on now! Don't penalize those of us who don't have time to read a whole book. I understand it is extra credit, but I have too much work to do to read a book. Maybe those studio dropouts could read it, then they would be good for something.
- oh, it's not a real thing! I was only saying a thought i had. it should be a totally optional thing anyway. I was posing that as a question to professor khan. not signing it as him. so anyway, I'd still do it :)
(stay tuned for message inciting enraged comments about my immaturity) These articles are negatively beneficial to ID students. I know no more about design than I did before reading them, and what I did know before is now lost amidst the big-words-for-the-sake-of-big-words which fill all four articles. The culture of BS that pervades the COA is causing me to seriously question my reasons for coming to Tech, namely the "practical" education which everyone seems to think exists here. Apparently, the favorable qualities of Tech run no deeper than the engineering departments.
From Monday's AJC Horizon:
'Driving by Technology Square, home to Georgia Tech's expanded campus, Bansley pointed to several scrawny trees in a sea of brick on West Peachtree Street. "They're going to be sorry. They're going to have to take out the sidewalk when they have a dead tree," she predicted.'
So maybe Tech Square is not perfect after all?
HAHHHAHAHAH What?!?! An example of total ignorance to practicality in favor of theoretical design values dreamed up by COA students? No way!
does anyone have any idea how long it will take to find the answers for the sample questions. i think since we are not allowed to use our notes they should put all or nearly all the sample question on the final and we'll be asked to answer 7 of them instead of having a choice of picking out 7 out of nine . i mean come on this is so unfair. since we are working our ass off finding the answer why cant we get something in response .
(sample answer from Sabir) Really, you should have a) been at every lecture, read every article in fine detail, and also read all books referenced by the articles and b) not have slept through any lectures. Come on folks, who could possibly sleep through a lecture, what with the dimmed lights and stuttering, monotone voices of the lecturers. If you've done all of these things, the final is a piece of cake! It should take no more than 10-20 hours to study for which will leave just enough time for the article summaries due on the 24th.

my first language is english and these articles suck...i pity those that have another first language
though sadly enough, those who have a first language other than English tend to understand it better than those of us who did learn English first.
- its not about first or second languages. its about the ability to read critically and strategically: ask yourself some simple questions about the article you are reading: what is it part of, why is it structured this way, what is the author doing in this piece? the blair piece, for example, is clearly an introduction to a book. ask yourself, what is the book about? well, its about cities at a particular moment in time: more specifically cities undergoing a transition from authoritarian to democratic frameworks. then ask yourself, why is it structured in short pieces, each with a particular heading? what are these headings? perhaps they are a summary of conditions that mark transition, or different kinds of transitions. ask yourself: what are some of the issues that he has identified? what is common between these descriptions?
- its all there. (in fact blair is very clear on the first page on their reason for emphasizing cities as sites for studying democracy, as opposed to say the history of political parties or something else).
- its important when reading to step back from the thicket of words and get an overview. diagram the structure, identify the recurring terms and constructs.
- youve got to teach yourself how to read to extract information, knowledge, ideas. coa 1060 (and life) will present you with a wide range of information, writing syles, technical language. you cant read different kinds of material the same way. and you cant simply give up and accuse the writer of using big words to "impress" or "confuse" you. (of course all writers could write better. and use less jargon. but jargon cant be wished away because each discipline or specialty develops a special or particular vocabulary). you didnt give up when you were first confronted with orthographic drawing or modelling. this is no different. sk
Sorry if I sound confused, but is there any point to the Civic Wars article? I really can't see an argument presented here beyond her just rambling about how she analyzes public life. What's the big idea?
- well, answer the question youve just asked yourself? what is the point? its really very clear what she is doing when she goes thru/replays her process in finding a 'common plane' of analysis, in coming to grips with the way 'public' has been defined in the past. you see an evolution in her thinking. and along the way it sheds light on important terms and ideas, about cities, public life, democracy. it connects with a number of lectures and readings that you have already done. i think youre smart enough to get the 'big idea' (in fact you begin to hit upon it in our post above). what i suggest is that you allow yourself a moment of reflection upon the article rather than dismiss it as a ramble. sk
It's a good thing we only have another week to read the articles...If this continued on any longer I'd drop architecture just because of the confusing readings.
- everything is confusing, first go around. come on this is college; with each task you are expected to be challenged and to grow, not high school where you all you had to do was slamdunk the assignment and move on. sk
I did drop. And it feels.... fantastic.(except the whole having to finish out the semester thing) I highly recomend everyone get out while you're still young!
- I did NOT drop, and it feels....fantastic. Nothing feels better than pursuing/achieving your dreams. Those of you who dropped are weak, unmotivated individuals–why would you give up on your dreams and goals just b/c you experienced a little difficulty in the beginning? If it was easy to achieve your dreams and goals, you'd have nothing to strive for in life.
Just because people dropped architecture doesnt mean that they threw away their dreams. Maybe this semester made them realize that this isnt their dream. Its better to be a happy drop out and do something else than do do all this work for something you hate.
Does anyone else get the feeling that ID is the runt child of the CoA. I came in very interested in it and feel very discouraged.
- why do you say so? certainly the cfy, both 1060 and 1011, give balanced time to all. while the first half of 1060 focussed on the city, the second half has made sure that each discipline gets equal time. all the exercises in 1011 so far introduce skills (ways of thinking, looking, describing) that are essential to any designer/fabricator. and exercise 3, with its focus on everyday objects, emphasizes the multiple perspectives that go into the design of a product: the perspective of the designer, the user, and the fabricator.
No, that is BC
- oh no its catching, feeling sorry for oneself. why do tech students feel like they get "shafted"; why would you want to feel like a runt child and wear it like a badge? whats the point of masochism? of all the great schools that are surveyed, gatech students stand out for the negativity they aim toward their educational experience. come on guys, you are lucky, you are privileged, there is so much at your disposal here, pull yourselves together, take advantage of everything, and build yourself a super-you.
if such a thing is noticed in surveys, wouldn't one think something would be done to try and change such feelings?
hey guys, you are all losers, seriously
hurray for...wait...what day is it?!
Today is Nov 17, 2004 just another WEDNESDAY when summary is due by mid night!!! AREN'T WE GLAD THAT IT'S DUE ON WEDNESDAY NOT ON SUNDAY?
ummm.... no?
...um...u can do it any day...nobody said you have to wait until the deadline
yeah but how many people have time to actually think that far ahead?
Everyone does! If the summaries were due on Sundays, as they were before, they would be due earlier, not later. You can go ahead and make them "due" on Sundays for yourself, if Wednesdays aren't good for you.
I realize that reading and summarizing these articles is going to help us master our language, but what purpose does that serve for BC students when almost 90% of the words spoken on a job site are in spanish?
¡Tienes razon!

Dear Stephen Conschafter,
Can you please update the grades again? Thank you.
~a student in your section
Oh, and please post comments too. Thanks.
Dear Stephen Conschafter,
Maybe the sentences and paragraphs of our summaries might flow together better if the ideas which we were summarizing flowed together better and were not so disjointed. After all, these things are often the introductions to books and they contain references to things which we don't even have access to.
Stupid article. All this talk about St. Petersburg really makes me wanna go home 'is very unhappy now'. I hate you, stupid article! you should die. lol
ficken dich reading summaries
Even in German, please keep the soapbox clean -kjh
honestly people! If you feel this way about our work get out of Design or keep it to yourself. There is so much you could be getting out of all this if you would just get over yourselves and do what you came to school for, to LEARN! -lk
If COA wants us to learn this BS, then make a class for it so we will at least know what we are in for. If I wrote a paper about basketball instead of the "media and cultural studies" essay which I was supposed to write for English, I would fail. But totally irrelavent articles are the norm for offerings from CFY instructors. Apparantly, the same standards don't apply to faculty and students. Now LK, please inform me of my immaturity once more.
The articles we're reading are not as irrelevant to design as you may think. They introduce to us many of the different aspects of design, which is a very broad term and can apply to anything from commercialized design to architectural design to city planning. The program is just structured to offer a bit of everything to its students so that we can better understand what kind of courses are available in the next 4-5 years that we have in the college. Of course, upon initial examination the articles do seem irrelevant especially since everyone is still wired out from the cube exercise but if you were to look at the bigger picture than you would realize that the secret society of architecture professors do not just enjoy wasting our time as well as theirs by giving us irrelevant random information to study. Besides it's only a SUMMARY which means you don't actually have to put in a lot of thought into writing a shortened version of an article.
All I know is they better not count off for the summaries being a little short. I mean there is only so much I can say about something I don't care anything about.
- Oh, and by the way, power the immature kid!
Put it back on them, and don't forget, you're fighting for all of us, well all of the kids that aren't butt kissers!
YOUR RETRO CAREER MELTED!
^Butt kisser...

If this program is structured to offer us a bit of everything, it seems like BC is getting the short end of the stick. Who decided to make the vast majority of CFY art class? I don't think we'll be visiting any construction sites soon; we'll be stuck in art class. I understand the importance, even for BC's, to learn about design and the graphic world, but if CFY is an introduction to all three majors, I think architecture is getting a lot more attention!
Circle the appropriate response for an all purpose snivel:
Well, I for one don't know if I chose the right major. This working / coming to class / staying awake in class / reading / thinking stuff is hard! Who ever thought that I would be inconvenienced by classes / assignments / professors / sleeping demands / poor time mangement / actually having to thinkat a top university. At this rate I might not be able to attend my fraternity / sorority / drinking functions / hazing rituals / date rape activities this weekend, or even see the football game. This sucks. / Tech sucks. / Architecture school sucks. I am transfering to Mangement / Civil Engineering / Undeclared / Georgia Southern / my parents couch. At least there they respect free time and don't ask us to work too hard
Face it folks, college is hard work. Tech is an outstanding university because of it. Anyone who tells you different is not worth listening to. In 20 years you will not regret the parties you missed. You may regret the readings you blew off and the projects you phoned in. It is time to dig deep and show what you are made of.
I learn a lot from the COA courses and the readings that we are assigned. I see a relevance and connection to the design fields in everything that I've learned so far, but there are also some things that I've learned that aren't surrounded by design as well. Lectures and reading summaries are about listening to other peoples thoughts and conclusions from their own studies. It really aggitates me that people just disregard the lectures as something to sleep through or time that you could be spending fumbling around with your own work. The guest speakers that we have and the people writing these articles that we're reading have spent much more of their lives in these fields than we have and they've spent time preparing what they're going to say to us. They have an hour window of oppurtunity to tell us their advice. It just aggitates me that nearly everyone that I hear from disrespects that general sharing of knowledge from people, especially people who have more experience than us.
What!! Are you suggesting that I don't know everything that could possibly have relevance to my chosen field? I will have you know, Sir, that I have been in college for almost 4 months now. I would think that by the age of 19 I should know pretty much everything there is to know, thank you very much.
this conversation reminds me of a four year old that cries when they dont get a lollipop. find something better to do then bicker and complain.
No one is complaining about hard work. Heck, there is never anything about the crap load of work to be done for studio. What we are disturbed by is the bait and switch that was our decision to attend Tech. We were counting on a practical education which would prepare us for our jobs, not the same old liberal arts education which is available at countless other universities.
- Everyone who complains about tech, it’s your own fault. You knew coming in here that you were just getting a bachelors in science. This isn't a bachelors of architectures... so therefore you will have to take a crap load of courses out of the college of architecture to get your degree. This course is set up so that you have options other then architecture when/if you get out, so you have to put up with all this science, math, and “the same old liberal arts education which is available at countless other universities”. I know for sure that I want to do architecture and more design related stuff. That is why I’m looking into a 5-year program somewhere else. I made my mistake of not doing enough research on this school also, and now I’m struggling with courses like calc and cs, which I will never use as an architect.
- What did you expect? It's the college of ARCHITECTURE. If you thought that it wasn't going to include a liberal arts education, then you were just ignorant to what you were getting yourself into.
Ahhh, you must be thinking of Dekalb Tech. I hear they have a great A/C Repair program. Perhaps you may not have a true picture of what a "practical education" in a building related field might be. Is it possible that your instructors may have a clearer view than you?
Actually, I doubt it, since the vast majority of them are either many years removed from or have no experience in the actual professional world. Oh, and by the way, was that a derogatory comment towards those with less education than yourself which I just read?
Take a survey. You will find in contrast to what you might think of the instructors here the vast majority of them do have much professional experience, certainly more than you. I can think of at least two who own their own (large) firms and may one day be your boss. Do not let your mistaken preconceived notions inform your opinion of what a "practical education" might be.
I respect anyone who practices the trades no matter their level of education, but if you chose Tech simply to learn job skills without having to endure the "same old liberal arts education" you might be happier working with your hands.
What hours of the day will we be taking the exam on December 10th?
critical thinking = ultimate job skill
and, let's keep it clean when your standing atop the soapbox. Jason
Hi Anjali! I am having fun in class.
Here's some advice to the freshman. I know you don't like advice as you know everything at that point (I did too, but I guess I've forgotten some things over the past 2 years). Seriously though, Tech is a hell of a hard school. Ever major you can take here is difficult, even the m-train. The biggest challenge, however, is not the classes. While those can be tough, the real challenge is learning how to balance your work and your fun. Most of you probably never had to work hard in high school, and this is a tough transition. My first semester here was hell on earth, and I was really ready to transfer. I did end up staying, and to be honest, this was the best choice I could have made. Things really got better second semester, and now I have an almost obscene love for this place. If you aren't sure about your major, take the time to research other majors. It doesn't take much time, less than 5 hours a week even if you're really putting time and effort into it. The career services center here is amazing. They take every opportunity to make sure you find out what's right for you.
One last piece of advice. Don't worry if you find out you won't graduate in 4 years. Most people here don't, and that's not because they aren't hard workers. Ask any instructor.
Good luck finding you. That's really what college is for.
Not this college. This college is about the education. Not that its all bad. But I know I have no time to find me, only to draw and read, draw and read, draw and read. And occasionally attend my other three classes.
Those in stressful situtations tend to figure out what they really are made of pretty quickly. If you honestly don't have any time to do anyhting other than studio, you may want to try slacking off, just a little. Not too much, but just enough to have at least one night a week where you can have a good time. If you have a night off and cant find a good time, just ask. I'll be glad to dig somehting up for you.
- the recent exchange on soapbox has been engaging and amusing. some substantive issues have been raised, in many languages (!). and by and large the conversation sustained its seriousness. the distinction made between going to college to get trained for a job versus getting an education is important. both vocational training and college education have their place. and those who go to either should have a solid appreciation for what the other offers. regarding what you get at tech: its not liberal arts and science, not enough by a long shot to put into perspective the discipline-specific education you get in each college. at the coa, and certainly in the cfy, our mission, should you choose to accept it, is to encourage you to broaden your horizons, to think outside the boxes you feel most comfortable in, to. . . i could go on, but ill remind you of what so many of our 1060 speakers (esp gatech alums, like moultrie, leary, etc), said: whats important is the ability to think, to think critically, to be able to make connections between disparate information, to be able to get the big picture. job training comes on the job and in professional school at the masters level. dont think small and take advantage of what a four-year undergraduate college is set up to offer.
well said! (¡Bien dicho!) life purpose extends beyond a job, and I think that's a good perspective to have throughout life. Getting lost in tons of detail is counterproductive, and 4.0 GPA is not necessary.
I'm BC; I don't need this! I'm BC; I don't need that!...Where did this tunnel vission come from!?!
If your vision is to be a decision maker and be prominent in the industry, knowledge about construction is not enough; if your vision is limited to simply getting paid a salary by filling a job that happens to be in construction, then it is.
Good point way up there ^^... however my dream is to become an architect. There isnt any point in broadening my horizons if I know what I want to do. I'm not being closed minded in my decision just because im positive about my career choice. The architecture program may be great here but I want an architecture degree based on art and design, not science and math. The work I've seen in the sophmore studios doesn't even inspire me or get me excited for next year when we actually get to do architecture stuff. However, the work I've seen at other schools is amazing, even the freshmen studios. This may just be the difference in a 5 year and a 4 plus 2 program. I've decided I'd be happier in a 5 year accredited program where I get to start in an architecture studio rather then a common first year, and I can sit for the exam when I come out. This site has lots of useful information about college architecture programs: ACSA
- there are some very good 5-yr programs and some very iffy ones. choose well. you might want to talk to me (sk) since i know many of the schools. chances are, tho, that you may yet find yourself in a masters program a few years out. one correction to what you say here: you cannot sit for the exam when you come out of a five-year program. 5 year or 4+2, you still need to do your internship before you sit for your registration exams. (tho some states let you sit for your exams after just a 4-yr pre-prof degree– the 4 of the 4+2).
Question about the whole 4+2 thing... Do you get a degree after 4 years, or do you have to wait until the end of the sixth? The little boogers should just say the six year program, whici is what most of you will have to o anyway for just the bachelor's degre. Error: this should not happenevil laughError: this should not happen
- many at gatech, outside the coa, do take six years to graduate, because of the coop program and other reasons. however if you are a true freshman thinking of architecture there is NO REASON why you should not be able to stay on course: cfy, then three years, one of them in paris, then a degree (Bachelor of Science in Architecture). then either straight into a grad school (this or another) for 2 years for a Masters in Architecture (M.ARCH, accredited professional degree) or work experience before heading back to grad school. all you need to do to stay on track is meet regularly, every semester like with your dentist, with the advisor to make sure you are taking the appropriate courses. the students who take longer do so because they choose to take lighter course loads (gotta keep up the lifestyle!) or else forget to take required courses when they should (hate structures; will delay until i can no longer). this is a problem across campus: students not charting out a course plan for themselves and regularly reviewing progress, and opportunities, with their advisors and faculty mentors. what 4+2 degrees offer over B.Arch degrees is the opportunity to take courses in allied areas. 4+2 programs like the one here allow students to develop concentrations (take certificates) in a wide range of areas: digital media, history, city and regional planning, structures, marketing, the list goes on. this 4+2 also allows you to start taking many of the professional courses (those usually taken in the 2 part) while you are an undergraduate. ive talked to many students, esp those who come in with advanced standing or many credits, these past few years about how to take advantage of the flexibility the 4+2 curriculum offers. again all i can say is: take control of your destiny, go shopping in the catalog, think about what you have to or want to take, and figure out a way to make it happen. and now, on a totally unrelated note: hope the calculus test went well today
- sk is the man. thanks so much; for everything you do. (including pretty much living here!)
Sorry to inform you, that the calculus test did not go well, for me at least.
(
Calculus is rough. I pulled my grade up to a C and I'm so happy. It's sad that I would do nothing and get an A in high school, yet here its a struggle just to pass the class. Once I'm done the final I'll probably be back down to a D. :(
- just out of curiosity, are the last set of readings going to be posted soon so some of us who are going out of town uber early will have time to post before leaving?
- yes, by noon tomorrow. sk
Do you assholes in Couch make this kind of mess of your living space? The custodian for the building is clearly not going to do much cleaning, yet you leave cups, bottles, and freaking oreo crumbs all over the place? I'm not cleaning this place for you again.
It's true... CFY studios have become veritable pig-styes... it really bothers me that every time I sit down to a computer, the space is cluttered with everyone's trash... honestly, how hard is it to throw away your candy bar wrapper and coffee cup when you are done?
It would be nice to get our next summary assignment as soon as the last one was do so we could have the full week to work on them.
Hey it's me, the Couch asshole that throws stuff on the floor... no one asks you to clean the room, we can't help it if you have OCD & can't deal with the mess... there's so many people that use the room and there's so much paper being torn and cut, how could you expect the room to stay clean? We were told that the janitors will clean after this semester's over, so quit being so weird & just deal with it for another couple weeks...
- it's hardly wierd to not want to work in a complete garbage can
If yall are going to fight on the soapbox, have at it. If you are ready for some real life fighting... ill bring sock-em-bop ems.....
Here's a thought. Instead of taking 10 seconds to wrtie a nasty note (great grammar by the way, very eloquent) about someone leaving their oreos on a desk, why not take 10 seconds and just throw them away? Not that they're not a slob for doing it, but can't you rise above their level?
JB
will you be my friend?
- gives a big fat hug :)
- the last reading assignment for reading summaries is up.
WHERE DO WE FIND THE LAST READING ASSIGNMENT??? THERE IS NO LINK
- gatech library online reserves under coa 1060.
Jen, will you marry me?
- givesa long passionate kiss
Sabir, will you marry me?
I can't find the reading assignment online, all i found were the assignments as of 11/12/04.
- YOU ARE RIGHT. JUST CHECKED AND THEYVE GONE. THE LIBRARY SAYS THAT THEY WONT BE UP UNTIL MONDAY. SO ILL JUST GO AHEAD AND CANCEL THIS LAST SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT. SK
- I just want to say that I love the Soapbox! As annoying as it is when people get on to btch and complain, it has been very useful for me when I want to communicate to Sabir/the TA's. There should be a soapbox for every class. Oh- and thanks for cancelling the summaries, Sabir! You rock my world!
ALL HAIL SABIR....THE BEARER OF GREAT NEWS!
wow, thank you sabir for being so... right in your decision making.
Oh yeah! This is the best news ever! Now I can focus on getting my studio work done before Thanksgiving break and maybe, just maybe, I'll actually have a real break this time!
the coolest thing ever:

David Yoke, you are still logged onto one of the CFY computers, again. when you get a chance, come log off, because its not fair that youre using one and you're not even here.
his: Khaaaaaan!!
hers: Khaaaaaan!!
my daddy is buying me a new mercedes for christmas!! yay me!
that is lovely and all, but you really shouldn't announce it like that...it makes you look really cocky and snobby
yes, just a bit spoiled too
and what was your reasoning behind telling everyone that? Just to get attention?! Who says stuff like that?
I don't know...but if I was getting a new mercedes for christmas i would probably want to tell everyone too. Being spoiled that much can do stuff to your head.
And being a whiny btch can also do stuff to your head.
Wow. Some people at this school have way too much money.
The honor is in the dollar; you can never have too much money.
I have $49.13 in my account. Does that mean i have no honor?
It means that you're like the rest of us.
I am surprised that people haven't figured this out yet. In the REAL world, money is distributed unevenly. It's not really a matter of being fair; it's just life.
$49 is a 1 on the 1-10 scale of honor. not bad
$49 may be low on your honor scale, but if earned by yourself, it's greater than any amount of money given to you by someone else
$49 is better than negative $49 any day!!!
For the final exam study questions, when a lecture is referenced, can you identify it by the date in addition to the speaker? That would be really helpful.
Thanks
Yes, that would be helpful. But if you really need to find a particular lecture right now, you can find the date and lecturer's name by checking out the schedule
Thanks, it's amazing how i've been in this class for almost an entire semester without realizing there was a schedule
One of the finals questions ask me to refer to my experiences in exercise 2...I dropped studio before then. I can't do that. I enjoyed this class but now I'm gonna be hurt on the final. Sigh, you win some, you lose some, but in the COA you lose more than you win.
Remember that you won't have to answer all the questions on the final exam - you'll have choices.

Why did you drop studio but stay in 1060?
Because the first half of the class was actually interesting when we were talking about problems and solutions with Atlanta's layout. Now it just turned into a recruiting campaign for each major in the COA. Plus I needed the hours and I can apply a little of this to my new major. (and i get credit for it... I don't want to be here 15 years)
David Yoke.......... LOG OFF THE LAB COMPUTERS BEFORE YOU LEAVE!!! SOME OF US HAVE WORK TO DO!
...did you know that if you just turn off his computer and turn it back on, you will be able to use it AND the other person will lose whatever they didn't save?!?!?
Yes. There's also this magical little button that says "Log Off." That may just work...maybe.
Yeah since when would you need a password to log OFF a computer. I have to do that all the time. Its not hard.
When you lock a computer no one else can log off. Thanks for your smart ass opinions though.
I love school so much. Why do we have to have a thanksgiving break? We could just spend that day working in the studio being thankful for all the love it gives us.
I lost my keys. I think they might have fallen out of my pocket during 1060 earlier today. If anyone finds them, please call my cell phone: 504-256-0425. Thank you.
- I am an idiot. I forgot that I switched jackets and my keys were in my other jacket... I should run away to a desert island and lay there to die...
that's hilarious, thanks for the good laugh. dont worry, we've all been there :-)
Jonathon Cook...check the easle stand group page...now!!!!
Dear Stephen Conschafter,
Can you please update the grades again?
It would REALLY help.
Thank you.
Borden: "Another Pavement Another Beach: Skateboarding and a Performative Critique of Architecture" — where is this from SK? its from the final exam practice questions
the 14 characteristics of fascism.
this is scary.
i'm sure there are going to be lots of responses to this, and i'll probably be called a "socialist" "terrorist" or "anti-american". you can call me a latte-sipping liberal, tree-hugger, or whatever else you want–but but i agree. lots of people are refusing to accept the america that we live in today. go hop in your big 4x4 suvs waving your rebel flag and show what RED STATE pride you have.
That article was awesome... This country is definatly headed in the wrong direction. Hopefully we can turn it around after these next 4 years.
I like how this article was posted in 2003. How convenient that he just now realized the 14 characteristics. You think everyone who voted for Bush waves the rebel flag and owns a 4x4 truck? You are just as ignorant as you would like us to believe every Bush voter is. My goodness, now if you could help me jump start my Corolla, I'd appreciate it. Maybe I'll see you back in New York where I live this Thanksgiving. (Some northerners don't support Kerry! Horrors!)
I am working on an essay that explains why these 14 characteristics do no apply to the United States. The implication that they do is completely absurd.
Just as a side note, I love my V-8 4x4 suv, i love the 13 miles per gallon it gets, and i love the fact that it is nicer than your 85 volvo or camry (and worth a lot more). Who ever thinks that rampid nationalism is a bad thing is a moron. Im very proud to be an American, and I am also proud to hate the French, and you sorry liberals in the soap box. Happy Thanksgiving, im out.

Thanks to Joseph Crist for making our studio a better place to work. Rep yo city Jo Jo.
I need some clarifications about the reading assignments for this week. Even though there is no summary due, we still have to read the articles. But there are about 8 of them on the library's online reserves. I was wondering if we had to read everything or just the ones that are on Cooldaze?
Enjoy.
Fascist governments such as the US very often use their "superior militaries" to liberate people under the iron fists of actual fascist regimes
Um...I am thinking that all these 30 some odd questions that are to be posted are way too overwhelming. I don't see how anyone could possibly get all of the answered by the time for the final with every other class and not to mention that they are being posted about one or more months ago. I don't see how this can give us enough time to study. Oh well, I guess I will die of lack of sleep. Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! :)
whine whine whine
It's not exactly whining when the statements that have been made are truthful, now is it? Maybe it is not so much whining as it is constructive criticism of the lecture course. You should consider all aspects of a statement before making a judgement on it, now shouldn't you?
Here is the link to most of my essay relating to the 14 characteristics mentioned above. http://members.cox.net/nerdysuperhero/
- i commend you on an intelligent essay.
- loyalty to your country doesn't always mean loyalty to your government
Mmmm...Pandini's during studio is soooo goooooood.
- all the questions will be up by friday november 25 as promised in my earlier email. and yes i dont expect you to work on thirty questions now. am whittling them down to a workable twenty or so. sk
You are a design student. It's your first day on campus. You are given a bag of granola and dropped off in the wilderness. This is how students at the Ecosa Institute–the only design program in the country devoted entirely to sustainability–spend the initial three days of their semester.

what about http://www.hot-like-fire.com/ ?
"rampid" is not a word. genius.
nitpicking is really annoying.
TO HELL WITH GEORGIA
sabir, is there any way you could give us any sort of extra credit to replace some of our lower summary grades? that would be really awesome since some of the ta's grade unfairly and this would give us a chance to make up for some of that. Maybe we could write summaries for some of the secondary articles or something?.....anything?....please?
- clock is ticking in the mouth of the alligator for those final exam questions. -sorry, i went to see finding neverland yesterday. I checked all day long on thanksgiving, and the questions never did appear.
due to unforeen circumstances (no, not too much turkey, unfortunately), the final exam questions will not be up until sunday. we will limit the number to twenty, instead of thirty, to make it easier for all of you. sk
13 final exam questions are up. A BAKER'S DOZEN OF QUESTIONS. WITH ONLY THIRTEEN TO PREPARE, GIVE THEM THE EFFORT AND QUALITY OF THOUGHT THEY DESERVE. SK
Where can I find a tomato for pretty cheap? Anyone? It is ok if it is rotten...I am sure he won't mind
who won't mind?
girl.... don't do what I think you're gonna do... cuz you know that i know what you know you're gonna do
this i gotta see
AHHHHHHH!!!!!
If someone could let me know exactly how the numerical grades will be figured out for the summaries and how the final will be factored in, I'd appreciate it.
I think the Kroger over on peachtree has some good tomatoes. 'wink, wink' I dunno if they're cheap though...

Can we get some grades for our second set of summaries please??? I would like to have a reasonable approximation of my grade going into final. I hate to say it, but I find my TA in here to be by far the worst at giving grades in a timely manner (compared to my other classes). I don't want to be blindsided by my final grade....please give us some feedback.
Dear 1060 students:
If you need to communicate with your TAs, please email them individually. Despite the fact that we do read the soapbox, emailing us is a more effective way of letting us know what you want/need from us than complaining anonymously.
thanks! kjh
Olga... Do you have an aim screenname? (By the way, this is the guy you met at the review) IF you do, and IF you care to give it to me, my screenname is nerdysuperloser. =)
I shouldn't have to communicate with my TA if they did the job they needed to do. Maybe if ya'll meet on Sunday, you can relay this message to the other TA's. (While you are working to make sure the answers to the final are super hard...thanks)
That last comment is very disrespectful to the TAs. Yes, they are TAs and they have responsibilities to us, but they also have other lives. I mean, they are graduate students, so cut them a little slack. Yes, it is very frustrating at times if they don't do things on time, but that is absolutely no excuse to be disrespectful. Learn some manners. Most of the people who comment on here disgust me because all you do is whine and disrespect other people. Grow up. You're in college now. The comments on here make you look like you should go back to elementary school to learn how to be polite and courteous. It's embarassing to read the soapbox now because it makes our entire class look bad. Please grow up or leave petty, disrespectful comments to yourselves.
I agree...there's ways you can say things without sounding so disrespectful.
Sorry, let me try again....
Pardon me, you exquisite TA's. If you could find time in the bottom of your overflowing hearts to post the grades of our summaries, I would be forever indebted to you. I understand that you have very busy schedules, so please do not rush. I respect you very much. I can not wait to see what new and innovative grading techniques there are on our finals. thank goodness that you have all the answers.
Dear Fellow Peer Sir Sid,
The rewording of your previous...over-zealous statement is such a polite and sincere request, that, if I were one of the TAs, I would have no choice but to fulfill it. Your fine choice of words and lack of grammatical errors glamorously display your sincere heart and, most obviously, your sarcasm. Nevertheless, the fact that you did not state, outright, that you have no respect for the TAs is wonderfully kind of you. Now, I would like to take the opportunity to inform you that, since final grades are due shortly following the final exam, the TAs will be working speedily to grade your exam; thus, the grading techniques that the TAs use will, in all probability, be rather similar. Do not fret my little Sid! You will have your exam graded much like the rest of us. By the way, I was wondering what exactly the reason for your desiring to know your grades going into the exam. Would you, by any chance, lower the effort you put into the exam as a result of the grades you have already received? If so, then that would not do you much good. I will conclude by saying that, hopefully, the TAs will notice your awesome need to know your grades; and they will subsequently sacrifice the years of hard work they have gone through, so that you would have the ability to put forth as little effort as possible into the final exam. May they pay you the same respect as they grade your exam as well.
Finally, someone understand and sympathizes with me. I started to think all of my fellow COA kids had already been tamed by the beast that is the COA. It is refreshing to see that Sid and Meier want to stand up and buck the system with me.
Wow. I, Meier, was most definately not "bucking" anything. Chuck, do you know what satire is? Hopefully, you do. What I said in my little blurb is so utterly and completely rediculous. I would have thought that someone who spoke the English language would have known that. I am sorry, that was a little harsh; but I think it was necessary. "Sid Meier" is someone who makes pc strategy games. "Meier" is not actually in any part of my name. As a little sidenote to Chuck: If you do not understand basic satire, then maybe there could possibly be another reason why you are getting bad grades on summaries than the TAs? Maybe?
Wow. I would have thought that someone who spoke the English language would have known how to spell ridiculous.
Just to let you know.....i took a victory lap around my dorm after finishing up this exercise.
Chuck:
I am sorry about the spelling error; I have a bad habit of spelling ridiculous incorrectly and I apologize for having offended you in this way. In case you are interested in other grammatical mistakes that I am in the habit of making, I will tell you. I frequently write 'arguement', instead of 'argument'; in the fifth grade, I would absent-mindedly spell 'checkers', 'c-h-e-k-e-r-s'; I make random other spelling and/or grammatical errors while I am typing or writing that I do not even know about; and I also have very bad handwriting. Ah! I almost forgot to mention that the form of "understand" one uses in present tense, while the subject is third person singular, is 'understands'. You should probably check your own writing before you criticize someone else's; you may be called a hypocrite. Now that the subject of my grammatical handicap has been exhausted, let us return from this tangent. Do you have anything of importance to speak to me about?
blah blah blah, grammer, schrammer. Why don't you just study for your final?
I have been studying for over a week. Anyways, it is not me who is keeping this up. You are being downright stubborn. You never had an argument against me and every little thing you say only paints an 'L' on your forehead. I am simply trying to get you to see that you are wrong, so that the TAs and everyone else involved with the class will not have to put up with the constant whining put forth by the discontent; but apparently I am not going to be able to do that, simply because you do not believe yourself to be wrong, even when you never had a point to begin with.
to those that cannot stop bickering,
i'll be your friend and give you big hugs that will make you super duper happy
Are you a really hot girl? Cuz if you are... =D
another bad habit: hanging prepositions.
Before the semester ends, may I ask for another installment of "what our professors do on weekends"?
7 more days...7 more days...7 more days. If you keep repeating, it helps relieve the stress.
dear sid:
you do not think that you should have to communicate with your TAs? do you communicate with your professors? TAs are probably more valuable to you than professors, since they are students too. if you would bother to talk to them, i bet you might actually enjoy it, and maybe learn something. I saw my TA last night in the COA building, and i said hi. in fact, I see her pretty often. TAs are people too, not just sabir's grading robots. (in fact, if they were, i guess you would have nothing to complain about)
have a nice day!

Sorry guys...I really hate to put the soapbox in whinebox mode but this has bothered me all week long. Correct me if I'm wrong but Sabir suggested that for the final exam we should write about 700-750 words for each response. So let's do a little math here. We have to answer at least 7 questions in 3 hours. So if the 3 hours were properly divided up that would give us about 25-26 minutes to answer each question. So Sabir wants us to write 700 words under 26 minutes and do it 7 times??? I dunno if this means I'm stupid or what, but I KNOW I can't produce a 700 word essay in 25-26 minutes. I also do not think I can produce 4900 words in three hours. The last time I had to write this much for one assignment, I was given 7 months to do it. Sabir...you've been generous enough to reduce the amount of study questions and I'm grateful for that, but please cut us a little slack with the word count...please.
Ive got a new drinking game. Get a handle of any liquor. Every time someone whines on soapbox, take a shot.... in about 15 minutes, youll run out of liquor.
For real people, dont worry about word count on the final. Just write good responses and answer 7 questions.... Sabir isnt going to count your words, he just wants you to know the crap.
Fo' Sho' ;)
It is now 2:30 am on Saturday morning and I was just checking to see if people got the memo at the beginning of the year. Did you guys get the memo that said YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN "INDIVIDUAL" DESK IN CFY?!?! I just wanted to let you guys know that for the people that thought they could just claim any desk and get by with it without letting others use it, your stuff has been placed at the front of the room. You need to claim your stuff that you have openly left for an invitation for people to steal. Two people out of the hundreds in CFY were polite enough to come through and clean the desks until 2:30am this morning. I know I know...it still looks like absolute crap, but two people can't clean for 300. So, we did this in order to help out the janitors a little bit. Yes, they do get paid, but they ain't you momma and they don't need to wipe our butts for us. So, in order to keep our enviornment a little cleaner and more liveable it would be greatly appreciated if you guys would throw away your coke cans when you leave, throw away scraps, etc. etc. We are grown ups and hopefully have learned a little of how to take care of ourselves in over the past 18-20 you have been in existence. Thanks so much for your cooperation in advance! Good luck on finals :)
P.S. to the jerk that had a bloody finger and left his bandage on the countertop with blood all over it, THANKS...THANKS a lot for being an A#@!
hello moto
why is it that the exercise 2 reflection page for Sobti NOT a link???
Tanner and Olga check your email.
what time on friday is the final exam ?
8 am, bright and early in the morning.
When are the reflections due?
Depends on your instructor. D3 is due Tuesday because that is when she is giving us our grades.
- it can't be due tuesday, because grades are due on monday and instructors can't assign grades without the reflections...
- try telling that to our instructor, it doesn't make sense to us either...

how could grades be due monday when that's the beginning of finals?
so reflections due tuesday, grades are due NEXT monday - what's the problem here, then?
Does anyone have the last slide sheet for Art History I (mannerism)?? I missed class that day. Let me know. thnx~ Chrissy, gtg935r

Taking a final in the auditorium may be one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever done. Taking notes in there is bad enough, but to have to try to write essays in those chairs with the tiny writing surface. Good Luck! I would ask the instructor for a change of venue.

Does anyone know if on the final the questions will be the exactly like the ones posted...like with the articles that should be used...that way we dont have to remember the exact names of the titles and authors???
From what I understand, the questions will be the EXACT ones we were given...I hope
Does anyone know exactly HOW strictly the attendance policy will be enforced when it comes to tallying our final grades. I don't think the system was very fair..3 absences and a drop in letter grade?? Not to mention, practically everyone had people signing them in?
- i wouldn't plan on being absent for the final
it's a little late to be worrying about that...don't you think?

these final exam questions are the most drawn out, complicated, BS questions ever. thanks alot HOT FIRE
you know they didn't even have readings or a final for 1060 three years ago. it's bullshit.
- I just have to say I'm so sick of everyone's complaining...that's it. Thanks. Good luck with exams
Then don't read it. It's that simple.
grow up guys, quit your complaining. if you wanted to go to a school where you didn't expect to have to work, you should have chose something like kennesaw or uga. please. i am thankful that sabir has condensed the questions down to what they are now instead of the original 40. you have had so much handed to you with 1060 that you should be THANKFUL, not COMPLAINING. if you think this final is going to be difficult, you haven't seen anything yet. maybe you'd understand the questions a little better if you actually paid attention instead of messaging your buddy sitting next to you on your laptop all during class. maybe you should have come to class more often, as well.
Alright, so now we're complaining about complaining. I hope no one's annoyed now, that's so mature.

With essay question number 4, I was wondering if anyone can point out a project that had to do with Monica Ponce de Leon and her material/technological limits.
Actually I think that this class is ridiculous, and I don't think that even if I did "pay" attention..which in most cases is impossible..that i would have gotten anything out of the class. This class should be optional or made a part of COA 1011 to make it a 4 hour class..3 hour studio w/ a 1 hour lecture. Transferring here with over 90 hours of credit and realizing that I still have 3 years left at Tech makes me not want to waste my time.
- A senior in cfy
- frankly many of you dont think this class is ridiculous; ive heard from many of you what theyve gotten out of it. and if you transferred here without checking out what lay ahead (how can you say you realized that you would still have 3 years at tech only after you transferred!!) what can i say.
question: why does everyone use the soapbox to complain, and take surveys?
youve got to be strategic about preparing for the final exam. ive strongly recommended you study for the final exam in groups. a group of three means preparing answers for only four questions each. once youve fully prepared the answers, sit down and explain and discuss them with the others in your group. having done this will reinforce the learning. then go another round, taking the answers someone else produced to develop them further. this should make the task easier and more enjoyable. think of it like studio and ex 3.
each question has a particular structure. it also identifies the reading(s) and specific ideas/concepts within them. as i said during the study session, it is important that before you begin randomly looking for the answer, you diagram the question, identifying its structure and its constituent parts.
Here's a suggestion rather than a complaint: Make 1060 MANDATORY attendance (I mean take attendance every day for every person) and drop all the BS reading summaries. I can remember what I hear in cass and a lot of the time what I hear is interesting and informative, but when I read an article and write a summary of it I forget what I read and wrote the next day... I could summarize a doctoral dissertation on nanotechnology without having a damn clue what it is talking about. Most people I know take the main points of the required readings, fill in some junk in between, and post it. That seems pretty useless to me....

I'm still not real sure how I am supposed to walk out of three hours of writing and then go take another final. I am going to be mentally drained. Oh well, who needs to make decent grades in the other classes. Even though if I took the other one first, I would have plenty of time left over to study for 1060. (They make a two hour test and give us three hours to do it, what a crazy idea). Yeah COA, once again thinking they are all I have to worry about.
QUIT YOUR COMPLAINING.
This is the easiest final ever. They give you the questions that are going to be on the final. We had 2 weeks to prepare for them. Sabir even went as far as to make it only 6 questions on the final that you have to respond to. Its not going to be that hard... If you know what you are writing about all you have to do is go in there and write the essays you have studied. It should only take about 20 minutes each to write a page response to each. Thats 2 hours buddy.
There are going to be 9 questions on the final, you will only need to know 6 of them (meaning you don't need to know 3 of the questions on the final exam review page). Everyone can answer number 13 on the final exam with no problem (it's a BS question). That means you only have to know 9 questions on the final exam review. Thats not hard... split it up with a friend and study together. Do something other then complaining.
Yes daddy
How can you complain about the final when they are handing you all the questions? What more can you ask for? Maybe we should just write one essay so that slackers like you can get the same grade as people that attended every lecture.
Nobody made you come here...you couldn't possibly think that sometime during your time here you wouldn't be challenged...this is only the beginning...if you can't handle a 6 question final which all the questions are given to you in advance, you probably don't belong here!
SERIOUSLY, IT'S NOT A BIG DEAL! THIS IS NOT A HARD FINAL...
IT JUST TAKES SOME TIME TO STUDY AND LOOK OVER THE QUESTIONS A LITTLE BIT. I DON'T SEE WHAT'S SO HARD ABOUT THAT.
PLUS, SO WHAT IF YOU DO BADLY ON THIS FINAL? WILL IT CHANGE YOUR LIFE? PROBABLY NOT...SO GET OVER YOURSELVES.
Still though, wouldn't it be great if Sabir was like: "You can use your notes!!"
Yeah, it be great if someone was always there to hand me life on a silver platter or to say 'I think you should always look for the easy way out.'
LALALALALA.... its sucha BEAUTIFUL day outside. have u guys stopped studying long enough to notice it? i must say that its quite a distraction...

Ok. Seriously. I say let these people who suck at life complain all they want. That way, when they do actually fail the final, then we can all be rid of the people who don't belong here, both academically and socially. After the exam, if some managed to actually study for the exam instead of complain the WHOLE time, then it'll just be a kind of survival of the fittest. In an effort to rid the COA of people that don't belong here, but somehow made it, everyone can just join in to kick their Error: this should not happenes. If you feel like you belong here, then... SHUT THE Error: this should not happen UP!!!

~LOOK HERE~ to better understand "residual space," can someone give me an example. I know residual space pertains to public space that is neither designed or designated, but lurks between the boundaries??? Would sidewalks be considered residual?
- good question. certainly sidewalks can be designed and they are in many places (even here in atl at tech square) designed not to be 'residual'. but they are not strictly programmed; they 'afford' (norman) a number of uses.
residual space is just that; left-over, unplanned for. . and because of this "lurking" between here and there quality (not quite this or that, with no defined identity) it is appropriated by some and overlooked by others. if you flip thru the margaret crawford article you will see the examples she shows: sidewalk vending, sales, etc. sk

I would just like to state the difference between our pre-midterm summary grades and post-midterm summary grades are an amazing! My section must have turned into Hemmingway after midterm. Not saying that I don't appreciate the grading for the last set of summaries, but the grading for the first set should have shown the same curve.

it must be nice to have a TA that grades easy. It sucks that each one grades differently and for the unfortunate students who have a tougher TA (myself) their grade suffers.
Where did everybody go?

Hey Hillary, we're up in the library studying for this exam, and we're thinking you need to convince good ole Sabir to put all 13 questions on the final for a greater selection. Since you seem to have the charm that gets things accomplished, we'd appreciate any assistance. Thanks, yo.
"THATS IT, A BAKER'S DOZEN OF QUESTIONS. WITH ONLY THIRTEEN TO PREPARE, GIVE THEM THE EFFORT AND QUALITY OF THOUGHT THEY DESERVE. SK" is it wrong to think they dont deserve any? cause they sure as hell dont
well..at least it's 13 instead of thirty...it's almost like this class should be an optional special topics class.
it's ok... not everyone can get an A. get over it... the final is fine how it is, and if sabir makes it even easier that is just giving more advantage to the slackers of the class and ignoring the fact that there are actually people who attended lecture and worked hard on the summaries. As I said above... if you do the math you only have to know 9 of the essays.... thats not too many.. you can memorize those in a day. stop whinning.
Final Exam Discussion anything pertinent to actual studying can go here
Where is this 750 words per essay stuff coming from? At the beginning of the year Sabir said it was just a page. There is nothing on the final exam format site. What is the required length?
I think sabir should just cancel the final because we are all so stressed out. I mean thats what all my other classes did. You can see all the hard effort, long hours, and critical thinking that we all put into whinning and complaining about this final. We got him to cut the 40 study questions down to 13. We got him to cut the 7 questions to answer on the exam to 6. Now it is time to get him to cancel the exam.
haha.......... im kidding... this is tech not uga.
QUIT OBSESSING OVER WORD COUNT ALREADY. it matters more whether or not you wrote a fully developed answer to the question than if you have 750 words or not. some people can completely answer the question in 450 words. some might take 1000. if you think you're stressed now, wait until you have 3 or 4 finals in 2 days. yeah, it's possible. ~a very confident upperclassman in cfy (BECAUSE THERE ARE ABOUT 40 OF US)
anybody want to say something positive on soapbox? I'll start - happy holidays everyone!! have a great break! a whole month, yay!!!
No... Why waste our precious stressing time with silly positive thinking?! Now about having all 13 questions on the test instead of 9... that would be BALLER!!
... I really dont think it's worth stressing about. (I know i'm going to get a lot of flak for saying that...) Just think about having a month long break afterwards... everything will be fine, despite the huge workload. Honestly. This isn't brain surgery.
I hate that this bullshit class, that has no real purpose except to explain the majors in detail, is based solely on your writing ability. O yeah and the final is going to be graded like the readings so if you have been getting screwed like I have on my summaries good luck. I can’t believe that there is actually a possibility that I might be getting lower than a B in this pointless class. My recommendation for this course is to get rid of it.
- writing ability, what you dismiss as so much bullshit, is what separates the winners from the losers in today's world. because writing ability is not just putting words together: it encompasses the ability to read, abstract, synthesize, and replay. the ability to condense varied material into a coherent and convincing argument is what education is all about. just think back to what the successful professionals said about the importance of a liberal arts education: think back to brian leary, to robert moultrie, to steve mccauley; think back to doug allen, to monica ponce de leon, to the successful reviews in coa 1011. and by the way bullshit is as bullshit does.
- If you really think this class is pointless, then let me be the first to thank you for lowering the curve for the rest of us
I think you will get the grade you deserve based on if you attended lectures and paid attention or not. If your answer to the question makes it obvious to the reader that you know what was discussed in class, i believe you will get a decent grade. they arn't looking for a thesis or some indepth paper... at least i hope not. just answer the questions to the best of you knowledge and you'll do fine.
- exactly. thank you for your sane comments.
Good luck on tomorrow's final!
because we think that this exam is extremely lame; however, this exam does not reflect on Sabir, we have decided to create a "cheat sheet" if you will...Please answer any of the missing/unfinished questions and feel free to use this as your study guide. This really isn't meant as a complaint, more of a pleading question:
What is the point of going into the final and rewriting what we have already writtenor at least conceptualized. If Sabir is reading, would it not be just as effective to let us bring in our answers, turn them in, and leave? It might make it more likely that someone would cheat, but in that case it would be just as easy for someone to memorize others' ideas and come in and copy them down. Just a suggestion.
guys, in response to a couple of things on your study page: 1) you don't NEED to write 750 words. we aren't counting. if you write two sentences, that's not good. if you write five pages, that's not good either, and we probably won't read it all anyway (remember, someone pointed out that if you do all write 750 words per question, the six of us have over a million words to read). the point of that particular number was to let you know that you should be able to answer each question sufficiently in fewer than 750 words. if you write an answer that is 450 words, as someone did, and it responds coherently and concisely to every part of the question/prompt, that's fine; you'll get a four. this test isn't about quantity, whatever you might believe.
2) in question 11, regarding the court cases: there's no need to describe each one in detail. focus on what those four (?) cases have in common and what the connection is between them. what is the "right" in question or the issue that ties them all together? that's more important - the concept and the main issue in question - than remembering exact details/names/locations from each case. (kristin)
For anyone that needs to study...
There will be a number of us meeting in the arch. building (room 150) @ 7 tonight. One last cram!! All are welcome.
so... CS final anyone? i have ten pages worth of bullets for this 1060 final... but have i even studied for CS yet? no...
- ten pages of bullets and no written answers? the whole point in an exam where the questions are given beforehand is to outline and write an answer, review it, and rework it.
i'm going to use the 5 housrs gap between COA and CS exams to study for CS... may god bless us.
how would you define residual or leftover public space?? is the sidewalk a fair game or is it something along different lines?
- go back up the soapbox to an earlier post.
- PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU REREAD THE INSTRUCTIONS POSTED ON THE FINAL EXAM PAGE
Final Exam Format
- Three-hour written final
- Notes are not allowed
- There will be 9 questions on the Final Exam
- You will be asked to answer 6 questions
- The Final Exam is 35% of the grade
- All questions will be weighted equally
- The exam will start promptly at 8:00 AM
- Please plan on being in the auditorium by 7:45 AM latest.
- Blue books will be provided. One bluebook per student
- Scrap paper is not allowed. The final exam questions handout will have ample space for you to outline your answer.
- Please do not use pens that use liquid ink (rollerballs, felt pens, etc.). They will leak through the paper in the bluebooks. Use ballpoint pens or pencils instead
i went to every class and read every article, and could take the exam tom without notes, but being that it is the last day of finals and i am pretty much brain dead after TWO stressful weeks, can we PLEASE have notes
- I think that having had access to the 13 questions that can appear on the exam for a little over 2 weeks prior to the test, it would NOT be fair for sabir to let us take notes into the exam. If we had not explicitly been given each question to prepare for, I would venture to say it's fair to ask to have notes. But since this is the way it has been set up, asking to take notes into an exam for which you have looked at the exact questions for two weeks is not a just way to measure our knowledge and ability to think.
- a first year student. (there are still those of us who legitimately care about the education process, and are taking the class seriously. God bless you, ye upperclassmen!)
can we at least use 2-3 notecards??? i think that would be fair enough for everybody
- now i've done my fair share of complaining, but i think that we should do fine..just study, write your responses more than once from memory, and u shall do well. Good luck!!
Not having notes is simply a test of our memorization skills. While these are very useful in many fields and careers, such as medicine and biology, no one is going to have to take a three hour, handwritten test without notes in the workplace.
Well, we still have to take finals and tests, even though those aren't present in the workplace. We're in college now, not in our future workplaces.
My handwriting downright sucks. Can I write in all caps (like I usually do) so yall can read it? Or am I going to have to take my time to make sure my essays are readable?
Is anyone else here brave enough to only learn 9 of them?? or do you think I am taking to big of a risk??
Can you all provide some tips on how to actually remember all the information need to answer all questions successfully? I've written out notes and essays for myself but it's pointless since the information won't stay in my head. HELP!
you can get partial credit on these questions right? how much is each one worth?
quoted earlier:
"Not having notes is simply a test of our memorization skills. While these are very useful in many fields and careers, such as medicine and biology, no one is going to have to take a three hour, handwritten test without notes in the workplace."
- but how many times does sabir have to say this test is not about memorizing facts and pieces of information? this tests how far you developed your ability to think about certain issues, link information together, extract new understanding from something already given you? you don't need notes for that!
- the same first year student
I'm sure we have all grown mentally and gained the ability to put pieces of information together, extract new understanding, etc. But if the information or the sources that we find the information in is not in front of us, then memorizing the information is all we can do.
Its one thing to ask us to write down our thoughts on various concepts dealing with architecture. But to have to write down the thoughts of other people (speakers, authours, etc.) is definately a test of memorizing.
- Party at Sabirs after the final? Who's with me?
- My question is...who is the Moron that made cs1315 have the exam the same day as CFY lecture? sigh.
None of you wussies took cs1321 two years ago don't complain
Sheesh. You would think you were being asked to memorize PI to the 10,000th decimal place. Those of you who are sniveling about not having notes, notecards, cheat sheets, personal computers, complete sets of the readings or three cell phone calls to someone who actually went to the lectures might as well wear signs saying "We used to be able to get by in High School without trying too hard." Welcome to college folks. Even after being given the exact questions that will be on the exam the sniveling continues. Perhaps you should ask if you could look at someone elses's test too. Next semester you might want to think about doing the readings as they are assigned instead of all at the end. Merry Christmas, heres your B-.
amen to that! whoever wrote that said it exactly. if you think this final is hard, you just wait. you just wait. hahahaha.
Try pulling that sh1t at Harvard. You want to go to a good school? Heres your chance. Do the work.
College really hasn't been that much worse than high school. The anti-complaint group of complainers must have had a bad experience. Maybe if I went to Tech for 3 or 4 years and was just starting the CFY, I would be grumpy too.
- Haha....that comment brightened my dark, depressing, studying-filled night!
First, everyone bitching about this exam: think about it. With each TA having around 40-55 students, at 6 essays each, with only a weekend to grade them, and around 120,000 words... I dont think they will be ABLE to grade tough. Second, Party as Sabirs Saturday night. BYOB
Will we be able to go to the bathroom during the final? I don't know about y'all, but when I drink a lot of coffee, I have to pee within 3 hours.

Finally
To the administrators of this test: I personally think this concept of the final is odd. Why are you testing us on cramming/memorization? The final should have been something more along the lines of us given a certain design/building/concept and having us discuss its inherent problems as well as what makes the design successful/meaningful/wrong/mismanaged. Take that for what its worth though... two cents
- Everyone bitching at everyone bitching about the exam, stop it. We know that you are so smart and don't have to worry about making an A. For those of you bitching about the exam, why aren't you studying instead of whining?
- its not cramming/memorization. thats what multiple choice are for. asking you to review and write an answer is a time-proven way of helping one disgest material. its coming up to midnight. everyone should now get a few hours of sleep. cramming now will simply make you feel stressed during the test. you need a rested head.
Does this person really go to Tech? They obviously have never taken an ECE or ME class before. Cramming is a valid way to earn higher grades.
Does anyone have any suggestions/comments/help to offer on the seocnd part of question 7? "Next rehearse the role 'pattern' and dimensional relationships palyed in the evolution of your cube in Ex 2......" For some reason, I have been stuck on this the whole week. I just don't see any connection to this part of the question to the first part of the question!
This comment is directed to the old red-headed physics major in couch...
SHUT UP!!
YESSS!!! I'm glad someone finally said it...(props to whoever it was) Yes, Mr. ex-physics major, I know questions are a good way to learn but even when the lecturer has to ask you to repeat what you just said b/c you're trying to use such big words, the answer probably won't help the rest of the class a whole lot since we don't know WHAT THE HELL YOU JUST SAID. How about next semester, you let the rest of us without questions get out at normal time and YOU can stay the extra 15 min. trying to impress the lecturer with your big vocabulary.
o my god, whoever was saying nasty things about my friend's picture needs to be slapped. who the hell do you think you are to say things like that about people? btw, just cuz you're too stuck up to have a little fun playing soccer in the quad doesn't necessarily mean that we suck at it...why don't you join us next time and we'll really see who sux! ~~~the redhead chick whos plays soccer with the boys
If there's anything to be said about recent comments on the soapbox, it's this: Respect your peers. We're all in this together. Nobody's any BETTER than anyone else. No college is necessarily better than any other college. I transferred to Tech as well...Not from KSU, but from SPSU. And while I have opinions and ideas concerning SPSU, I think that it's only fair for me to voice them considering I've actually gone to SPSU. Don't judge a school unless you've been there. I found SPSU to be quite challenging despite popular belief down here at Tech. So before you make certain comments about where we come from and make jugdgements about what kinds of schools they are, remember that it's not about where you come from, but where you're going. And one more thing...I am a student that WAS accepted to Tech as a freshman and she was too. I made the decision not to go to Tech and I am glad I made that decision. Remember to keep it clean peeps. Why the bashing? That earlier comment was very disrespectful.
- WKS (...a student that was also accepted as a freshman)
Uh Oh. Big Keith with da authority.
I wont deny SPSU and KSU are good schools. But lets be honest, they dont have the reputation, the prestige, or the implied difficulty that tech brings to the table. That is fact. Secondly, grow some balls people, you think for the rest of you life people are only going to say nice things, if you do you are an idiot. Tech is tough, Life is tough. Stop being a sissy. Let people bitch, its our right. If things suck in our government, I am going to bitch and vote to change. If things suck in CFY, your damn sure i am going to bitch.
Bitching is incredibly unproductive and self-gratifying in the end.
Good luck everyone! Have a lovely break!
We get to go home!!! yay!!
- safe travels. see you in the new year. sk
even tho i've realized that its the beginning of WINTER break it still hasnt hit me that we got a new year coming up... time flies when u're a cfy student... hahah. have a fun and safe break.
Do we check oscar on monday for our final grade in the class? Or do we look elsewhere?
some FINAL EXAM GRADES ARE IN COA FTP SITE!! Good LUCK!!
Where are they posted? I can't find them...is it just your section because in my graders folder, there is no final grade. Thanks
I believe that several sections' final grades are up. If this is not your case, just sit back and relax. Check your grade maybe tonight or tomorrow morning... Overall, I can see that TAs gave easy grades on us. For example, my section overall is 3.0 or above. I checked some other sections; they are around 2.5 to 4.0. Average is probably around 3.4-3.6 (Of course, it really depends on which TA you have). I guess this is the best gift Sabir gave us for Christmas. Anyway, 1st semester college is over. Happy holidays!
So how does the grading scheme work? Does 3.0=B, 4.0=A, etc. If so, does that mean the only way to get an A in the class is to have ALL perfect grades??
- hell no. we are very aware of that. A's start at 3.5.
how do i get to this COA FTP site?
AGH! I got an 88.025 overall!!!!!! SO CLOSE TO AN A!!!!
Yeah, it's too bad that perfect attendance can't bump your grade up
Kyle, please post our grades.
Kyle, please dont let anyone boss you around.
Is there anyway we can check to find out our 1011 ex 3 grade besides just receiving our 1011 final grade?
Just a quick question: If my first half average in 1060 is a 2.9, and my second half is a 2.9, and my final exam is a 3.5, does that mean that I got a 'b' in the class?
Is Kyle the last to post grades for everything??? Please man, the suspense is kiling me.
Is it possible to check my grades if im at home? does the network still work?
whoo-hoo! i have a SOLID A in 1060!! i rock :)
anyone knows the formula for calculating final grades?
Grades aren't due until the middle of Monday so give Kyle a break.
Grade percentages are here: http://cool.coa.gatech.edu/cooldaze/14 35% for first set, 30% for second set (replacing pedex) and 35% for final exam. but they aren't 4=A, 3=B, etc... there's a different scale.
GRI-KR Students,
Your grades are now in the course folder. Sorry for not posting them sooner. -KK
Thank you very much Kyle, I appreciate it. Merry Christmas.
