Here are some general comments on 11.17 assignment.
Many of you stated that the Mary Ryan article was a bit too discursive to summarize. However, the article has a very clear and logical structure.
1. After recognizing the “civic wars” as an essential phenomenon in exercising citizenship in a modern society of democracy, the author explores the theoretical concept of “public” as has been discussed by several great thinkers.
2. From this theoretical exploration, the author explains the need to conduct empirical studies, focusing on the actual and critical space and time of heterogeneous interactions – in this case, nineteenth century NY, NO, SF.
3. The author argues that the record of “publication” as a source of discovering how people have defined themselves as political actors. She also identifies the city space, civic ceremonies, and formal / informal political activities as the major field where public life has been constructed.
Regarding the Blair Ruble article, it is important to recognize that the author’s intention is to focus on the “(re)conceptualization” of urban history. The primary concern here is the construction of discourse rather than the substance itself.

The grades for 11.5 assignment are up!
Three summaries are graded individually.
General comments on 11.5 assignment:
Please check through your summaries before or right after uploading. I found quite a lot of misspellings and broken sentences that could have been seen and fixed easily if you had just read it once. Some sentences are really “unreadable” because of these mistakes.
I am surprised (and disappointed) that only a few of you mention the issue of “values clarification” or “content (and context)” in the Good Citizenship essay. If you have a chance, please check out how these concepts play out within the essay’s structure. Expressing values through design within a multicultural society is not an easy task because the design can become easily valueless. Those concepts and their related arguments are important because they are directly related to specific strategies as to tackle this difficult task.

The grades for assignments 10.13 and 10.20 are up!
10/09
1) Here are the regular meeting times of the groups.
Group e1 - Wed 6pm.
Group e2 - To be determined.
Group e3 - Thu 6pm.
Group e4 - Fri 1pm.
Group e5 - Thu 5:30pm.
Group e6 - Tue 11am.
Group e7 - Wed 1pm.
Group e8 - Sun 7pm.
Since there were some of you who missed the first group meeting with me, I expect some time conflicts.
If you are not available on your group's meeting time, please discuss with your group mates ASAP, and let me know if there is any adjustment.
From the second meeting on, I will take attendance. If you cannot come to the meeting, it is required that you contact your group mates before the meeting and explain the reason.
The time schedule is also posted on PAR-SHE PedEx.
2) In the Courses folder, under "Template Layouts" are templates for you to apply your street photos. They are in photoshop (psd) file format. Very simple and straightforward instructions are included.
3) This PedEx project is a "group" project. You will have to work as a team. Non-participation in your group's activity will be reflected on your grade.
4) I have reorganized the PAR-SHE PedEx page so that each group has its own section. Post your comments in REVERSE chronological order, most recent first, WITHIN your group's section.
To Group e8: Don't forget the tomorrow (10/10/04 Sun, 7pm) meeting at Room 150.
To Group e2: I have met (or will be meeting) every group this week EXCEPT your group! You need to contact your group mates ASAP and set up the time. (If you want, we can meet right after class on Monday.)
10/04
Please go to groups to see what group you are in. I randomly assigned those of you who did not sign up before Monday morning.
Your assigned street/block is also indicated in bold. It is one of the sections from 17th to 10th street (from A to H). Please visit midtown: aerials - maps for information on your street/block.
I have created a couple of pages for the PedEx.
1) PAR-SHE PedEx: This is the page where you can communicate with one another. Get to know your group mates, share your thoughts, post questions, etc. Think of it as a soapbox only for PedEx.
2) meet with myung: Each group will have to meet me once a week for the PedEx, starting this week. The entire group members have to attend. I have posted my available time slots on the page. Your group has to sign up in your available slot ASAP. Maybe you can use the PAR-SHE PedEx to figure out the right time for your group. If you need e-mail addresses of your group mates, visit http://www.gatech.edu/directories and type in the last name of the person. Or, I can provide you with your group mates' e-mail addresses also. Just drop me an e-mail.
Those of you who have not turned in the summaries due 10/03, please do so by 10/04 midnight. If you are not satisfied with your previous summaries, rewriting is encouraged. I am willing to elevate the grade based on your effort. Remember to let me know after you rewrite.
IMPORTANT! Do not lock your Summaries page. I cannot leave comments if the page is locked.
10/01
Sign your name in one of the eight groups for the PedEx! Each group will have five to six students. (We have a total of forty-six students. Two groups will have five students, and six will have six.)
You will have to sign up before end of this weekend!!! If you do not sign up, I will just randomly assign you to a group.
After you are all assigned, each group can have a 30-minute meeting with me sometime next week, and discuss about the project.
I will post the available time for the meeting in a few days.
09/20
1) I posted the grades for your 9.6 assignments: check your grades. The 9.13 assignment grades will be posted around Thursday.
2) I strongly encourage you to participate in the discussion pages that David has been initiating: lecture discussions. Since we have such a huge class, this is the only possible place where you can all share your after-thoughts regarding the lectures and readings.
09/08
General comments on 9.1 assignment:
1) IMPORTANT! Follow the summaries instructions and the template that are given! Try to write clearly in paragraphs according to the template. Even if you demonstrate a good summary of the reading, I cannot give you good grade if you fail to state the four points indicated in the template.
http://cool.coa.gatech.edu/cooldaze/689
2) I can still see some careless spelling mistakes or broken sentences. Please be careful.
3) Many of you have misunderstood the fourth template-point.
"What are some of the important terms, concepts, and constructs that the author introduces and deploys in the article? /Some of the important terms are... (list and define them)/"
We are asking for specific terms or concepts, not the general concept that overarches the whole text.
09/03
1) I have posted brief individual comments on your 8.25 assignments.
You can check them out in your Reading Summaries page.
2) There were a few of you who confused the assignment 9.1 with the 9.6. The 9.1 reading was the Delores reading, not the Jackson and Crimmins reading. assignments
3) A few of you did not post the assignments. I strongly suggest that you do so as soon as possible.
08/31
I have read your assignments, and here are some thoughts that came up.
The built environment is a complex of many different ingredients. When describing a man-made form, such as the streets you have described, it is important to observe and understand in terms of the street’s relation to almost endless aspects that overlaps on the form itself. As a designer, you are “required” to observe and understand more precisely what these relations are. Texture, light, dimensions, proportions, street/road patterns, and many more have to be carefully studied. Does the “wide” street really instigate walking environment? “Wide” doesn’t mean anything unless it is coupled with “high” or “low.” Texture and light can give endless variations to the “wide.” Even the “widest” street's accessibility and usage have to be understood within the patterns of its larger structure of street/road.
Also, try to keep in mind the point of view you are adopting when describing. Are you looking at your street from the bird’s eye view, or describing the experience of walking through your street? Maybe you are just describing the street as if it is an abstract object. Think of the ways to formalize your thoughts by asking these questions.
I encourage you to think about the correlation between the physical and the social. However, I do advise that you be more critical. Try to be more skeptical about the direct cause-effect relation. Like I said, built environment is a complex entity. A direct cause-effect relation cannot be found that easily when dealing with such issues.
Don't forget to check out your classmates' assignments and other TAs' comments!
08/24
Here is a discussion topic that you guys might be interested!
I have read some questions/posts on issues of urban/social fabric.
It is always a good idea to look up a dictionary or an encyclopedia if you are puzzled about a certain term.
Fabric
(from The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition)
1.
a) A cloth produced especially by knitting, weaving, or felting fibers.
b) The texture or quality of such cloth.
2.
A complex underlying structure: destroyed the very fabric of the ancient abbey during wartime bombing; needs to protect the fabric of civilized society.
3.
a) A method or style of construction.
b) A structural material, such as masonry or timber.
c) A physical structure; a building.
When we say “urban/social fabric,” the word “fabric” generally refers to the definition #2 – an underlying structure. There are, however, reasons why some people tend to choose the term “urban/social fabric” rather than “urban/social structure.”
Do you prefer the term urban/social “fabric” or urban/social “structure?”
Read the other two definitions of the word “fabric” and have a chance to think about the nature of your surroundings.
Is your street a “fabric” or a “structure?”
Share your thoughts here: urban/social fabric
