exercise 1.1: contour line
The Contour line drawings that we did in class Wednesday were very insightful. I found that I tried to release the element of pride in viewing the drawings aesthetic features. I performed the drawings mostly blind. This gave the experience deeper meaning. After the time was called I discovered that the images drawn were not in the correct proportions or location. Instead the drawings were overflowing with a direct insight to my visual sense. For example the Willow trees had a certain sharpness about them in comparrison to the slick and smooth Azelea tree. This small discovery allowed for me to contemplate about what really went on and lead me to in a sense the essence of sight. For example I know that the buildings angles meet at 90 degree angles in some areas and from the perspective that I viewed the building, the 90 degree angles were actulally more like a 60 degree angle or a 135 degree angle. Thus leading to the point that even though I see in my mind that 90 degree angle I should learn to trust my senses and draw the 60 degree or what ever the size angle on my paper. This is something that is a hard concept to grasp for some in transitioning 3d to a 2d surface with the feeling that it is still 3d. Synchronizing this concept of minds eye with the actual vision has proven to be a most useful tool and provided me with a most pleasant learning experience.
1.What did your continuous contour line drawing reveal about the urban landscape that you surveyed today?
The continuous contour line drawing revealed to me that the urban landscape was not composed of just trees and buildings but gave me an insight to how even though all of the elements of the environment were different they possessed a certain harmony of life amongst it all. I could really feel the roughness in the concrete walls and the smooth nature on some of the leaves when I traced the objects with my eyes.
2.Was it the type of drawing (continuous contour line) that led to this discovery?
Yes, I believe that given the type of drawing I was able to concentrate not so much on the visual appearance of the drawings themselves as I was able to concentrate on the object(s) of focus. This led me to incorporate a new type of sense into my drawing abilities and I think it will enable me to improve upon truly capturing the life in the objects of my focus.
3.Would a different type of drawing (charcoal tone value) lead to a different discovery?
I feel that if I used a different medium for this drawing such as charcoal I do not believe that I would have come to this conclusion partly do to the fact of charcoals already malleable properties as well as I could not capture the details of some of the lines. I do believe that it is possible to capture this idea when using charcoal if maybe done in comparing a smaller item.
Exercise 1.2
In Friday's exercise I found it interesting in how the materials used really gave the drawings a different feel about them. The Charcoal allowed me to really add a certain depth about the picture in the abillity to shade. The quick gesture drawings were interesting in how it really exploits the drawer's focus. I found it difficult to really rush myself but at the same time it was quiet the release in accomplishing such a small task.
