a brand new soap season.
welcome back.
sk
who says that? honestly.

So, yea...this hour-long wednesday class is basically BS?
They couldn't give us four credit hours for studio alone, so they had to tack on some worthless class which will no doubt bore us to death...

You're complaining about NOT doing work?

Why do you all complain about a course in your major? I don't get it. You are learning about what you will be doing for the rest of your life. You should love going to classes for that. I know I do. If you hate classes on your intended profession maybe its time to think about dropping the course before you "bore yourself to death" with another "worthless class."

And so it starts again - complaints about complaints about complaints...

like i said, another soap.
sk

Classes for OUR MAJORS should be interesting...just like in 1060, a lot of the lectures were interesting, but a good bit of them allowed us to take advantage of a dim room for an hour...catching up on some ZZZZZZ's. I just dont see the point in this lecture class, I think studio is enough.

If I may quote Rodney King, "Why can't we all just get along?" besides I value the lecture classes. When I'm not making up my hour of sleep during the week in lecture, I find the lectures to be relevant to what we are doing in the studio. I mean to move on into the future we have to learn about the past and it is just an hour a week and we have to realize, these people are giving their time to come and share their experiences with us so that we can learn from it and create our own aware of the actions theyve taken to succeed with regards to their career path...so i mean toughen it up because anything with architecture at Georgia Tech can only help us, whether it be that nice hour of sleep or learning about an architects problems that she once faced that we do know...besides remember with old age comes wisdom ;)

  • you must be really young

'attempt to change subject'
...so how 'bout them braves... heard they sucked

Okay here's a question. In 1060 one of the lecturers made a certain comment. She said, “There is a saying about being a writer. If you’re a writer, but you have the ability to be anything else…then don’t be writer…the same thing goes for being an architect.” My question is what exactly was she trying to convey?

The same comment caught my attention and I would also like to know what exactly she meant by it. For now it has prompted me to look more closely at BC, and indeed other majors outside the COA as well. Hopefully the lecturers they are bringing in this time will address this subject at least a little bit.

Ok, so I want to be an architect. I've always wanted to be an architect and never anything else. I can also paint pretty well and I like to paint in my free time. Does this mean I should ditch Georgia Tech, transfer to an art school and become an artist?

If I had any guts at all, that's what I would do...I would much rather be painting at an art school than here at the black and white institute of technology, but no...I'm here because I feel like I have a brain so I should use it. I might take some classes at SCAD-atl this summer or maybe the art institute of atlanta

o...k...

lol... black and white institute of technology... that sooo true.

i'm transferring to an art school.

All jokes aside, since I've been here I have noticed my growing interest in the industrial design program. On the other hand, I want to study architecture (and that is my number one priority right now). If I could have my way, I'd study both ID and Arch and get degrees in both at the same time. Anyone have any thoughts on architects doing work in the ID world? Are they usually successful? Or do you usually NEED a degree in ID to be successful in the field (like architecture)?

Does anybody from Deborah Middleton's class (MWF mornings) know exactly what the assignment was for Friday? She never posted it on her instructor page or gave us a handout. Please respond as soon as possible. Thanks.

I think we just need to draw some thumbnails (I also took some pictures) of the group hallway, and present ideas that explain the expression of space. She said it kinda fast, but that's what I got out of it.

Thanks a lot. Hopefully next time she will explain things a little bit more clearly.

Transfering to an art school isn't a bad idea... but remember you can always stay at Tech and take courses at art schools in Atlanta. I've been running into the same problem with Georgia Tech not having enough art and not being able to jump right into architecture the first year. If you are thinking about transfering to an art school check into Rhode Island School of Design. Very good school... and you could stick with architecture along with the fine arts.

the rhode island school of design is really hard to get into

so is georgia tech.

i don't know who the speaker was, but my guess is that some of you missed the subtlety (or breadth) of what can described as an 'ability'. -ths

you can get into any school you want to if you take the time and effort to put together an amazing portfolio and keep up your grades. if you got into georgia tech you have a pretty good chance of getting into rhode island school of design.

  • this has been an interesting discussion. since im familiar with both risd and gatech, and since i remember what monica ponce de leon said during her lecture, i think ill pick this up during lecture next wednesday. sk

life is great. studio is great. tech is great. I couldn't be happier! dnp

I'm sorry but why on earth would you want to go to the north?

are you joking me? the north is more integrated, less racist, more civilized.

attitudes have progressed far in advance of what they have been.

Interesting discussion about the South...
I have noticed a lot of racism/homophobia and segregation down here. People are so much more accepting of everyone in the North. It is very sad... and yet another reason to move to a school in the North. I guess when everyone gives you the friendly greeting of "go home Yankee" you should listen to them.

you're right, the north is more integrated, less racist and homophobic, and it does have a higher level of "class". but if young, progressive thinkers like us all move to the north, who would remain to incite change in the south, to allow for an environment of acceptance and diversity? not only are we part of the transformation of the "new south", but also of its culture. if you look at the south today and compare it to 15 or 20 years ago, it has come a long way. there are lots of things that go on in the south that are horribly wrong and disgusting (racism, homophobia, rampant social neoconservatism, etc.), but if we flee to the north, nothing will change. sometimes i feel like i'm a minority (political alignments aside) in that i am open-minded and progressive thinker. being in atlanta is comforting, as in it does not feel like the "rest of the south". there are lots of good people in the south, and hopefully our generation can educate and enlight those to become more accepting and open to others' differences.

I agree with what you said... but most students I talk to are very close-minded. I don't think there is much possibility in inciting a change in their minds. They don’t even realize that people that are different then them should have the same rights (see ban on gay marriages). I definitely feel like a minority down here because I’m a progressive thinker and open-minded.

I agree that racism is still a major problem in the south. However, racism still exists everywhere including the North.

it's a bit cold out there...

I would have to say so...I tried to run in it and my lungs hurt now

Anyone in Andrea Korbers class know her email address?

the atlanta falcons rock my socks off

does anyone in debras class understand what we are supposed to do for the assignment with our work from last semester?

I think Debra's class is supposed to reevaluate the pinup from last week, and fashion a polished presentation. Part 2 is just a study of the hall space presented with your skills focusing on the aspect you discussed with Debra on Friday.

do you think were supposed to mount them on something, and also is it the original drawings or just the copies?
Please don't even think about mounting anything! check out Deborah's class page

...exciting soapbox day we're having here... yep

please do not take any risks while measuring for 4.1. there is no need to step onto ledges, lean from windows, get on the roof. there are alternate ways to eyeball and measure. make sure you discuss measuring techniques with your instructor. thanks. sk

I wish one of the places they would let us do Exercise 4.1 is the Restrooms
  • How funny. I asked about doing the SAC locker rooms, but got the same response. I guess they don't like restrooms.

I just want everyone to click on that link up there. just to show how arrogant the "couch" people are. At-A-Way to show your class guys.
......

you're just jealous.... hey & you know what else, we're all done with physics & math so the other classes we're taking are like art history & spanish 1.... we've got it so good.... so basically, if you don't wish you're us, then you SHOULD HAHAHA

why would you want to cause disunity among CoA students? that seems awufully unthinking of you. just keep in mind that we're doing what youre doing, but we're younger.

we're just kidding around. no need to take it personally.

lets keep the soapbox from getting double-wide

...kinda like a lot of trailers in georgia? double-wide?

- that's only if you're lucky

sabir, any chance we could get a supervised visit to the roof of the bridge sometime in the very near future? be alot of help for the cfy inmates

i am really excited about this exercise 4. i have lots of ideas and i'm really motivated about it. what about everyone else? what kinds of feelings do you have about this exercise?
  • I'd be excited if it weren't for my lack of motivation. I need to get back into the flow of studio, and then I'll be ready for ex4

From past review of the soapbox, I have collected one terse and simplistic phrase to display: Ignorant Northerners.

didn't you mean " ig'nent " northerners?

From the looks of it, Studio 200 is causing less disunity than this whole North/South thing. Who would have thought that this would have lasted this long?

As an ID person I really can't stand Exercise 4.
P.S.
Ish needs to practice his free throws.

:(

the wake forest game is going to be just lovely.

I think Northerners are pretty cool...

i think we are cool too

its 2:57 am and i love the north..its my home forever and always

mine too...lived in georgia for 12 years but illinois will always be home

ok - it is super cold in the studio - could someone please actually turn the heat on - if i get sick it is the school's fault

That's it! I'm hopping on the M train

will everyone make sure they have signed up for a research team? we plan to have research projects assigned by the end of today. anyone not signed up for a research team risks getting an 'f' on the 1-credit hour lecture component. sk

No i wont! You cant make me! I'm gonna go pout :-P

please review the design brief assigned to your group. sk

Why should students work all night to make an attempt to satisfy their instructor just be shot down the next morning with all their effort completely ignored? Negative reinforcement is not a very effective educational tool nowadays.

Our studio space looks like a wreck.

PLEASE CLEAN UP YOUR STUFF ON THE DESKS IN STUDIO

it isn't your storage space. there are lockers, flatfiles, and trashcans.

Also...that vyco board on the drafting tables that you all love to cut up and burn so much costs $50. learn to respect the materials that the school supplies and others have to use. you have cutting boards.

this evening i am going to ask the janitors to sweep everything away from 150.

tomorrow the final phase of 4.1 starts for most sections.
each of you will need clean, uncluttered space, to draw your beautiful drawings on arches/bristol.

make sure you have windex and paper towels to clean/wipe off desktops and the bottom (wheels) and edges of the mayline before you begin your beautiful drawings. you'll be surprised how much lead dust accumulates there. clean your scale, triangles, etc as well before you begin. its all part of preparing for the task ahead.

when drawing, it is a good idea to cover the part of the sheet you are NOT working on with a layer of trace paper. also remember to NOT put your palm, elbow, or arm on the sheet. rest your arm on a layer of trace. this will keep body oils from soaking the sheet and smearing the lead.

please make sure you do not leave your 'stuff' on any desk with a mayline on it.

all desktops with maylines on them will be in very heavy demand through tuesday of next week. i expect the studio to be in use 24-7. please plan accordingly.

do not leave leave studio with your drawing set up on a desktop. if you have to leave studio to go to the restroom, make sure someone knows so that they can let others looking for a desktop know.

drawings 'abandoned' for more than 15 minutes can be removed by students looking for a desktop. if you do remove a drawing, please place it carefully on the nearest wooden desktop.

if you know sophs/juniors/seniors/grad students in arch studios who have desktops with maylines, it might be a good idea to go by studio (arch studios meet mwf 1-5) and ask them directly (or someone if you dont know anyone) if it would be ok for you to use their desktopa t some time when they are not using it.

at a pinch you could use a free desk in the middle of the night without asking. BUT PLEASE make sure you leave it exactly as you found it. a bag of M&Ms as a token might not be such a bad idea either.

please make sure you are extra vigilent about trash, food, and music in studio.

thanks.
sk

I have chosen to have an auction for the redish bike that has been laying around the studio (you know...the one with the masking tape "man" on it). No not really, but I was just curious as to whose it was. You might want to remove it before someone does without your say so. Peace!

Never done this before and it may seem like a stupid question, but is it ok to spray fixative on the Bristol?

The 1012 research project groups that are in myung's section, please sign up for next week's meeting here: meet with myung
Please sign up before Saturday evening. The first meeting WILL START from Monday next week (Jan 31).
There are 21 groups per TA. The faster you sign up the more suitable time slot you will get!

Kristin's section: please go to KJH Meetings and sign up for a time slot. (Farnaz - your group is fine; I transferred your signup from my TA page.) Please sign up by Sunday morning!

Arief's section: please check out my TA homepage, go to COA 1012 project and sign up for the first meeting for this research.

And which one is that?

GO BIRDS!

because friends dont waste wine

who said go birds? because im from philly and we should def be in this together.

about that "shelter" exhibition that sabir was talking about in class - i wasn't listening and now i want to go! who can tell me the details? and is it still going on in the snow and ice?

thats just fantastic, Yo this TO!!

So I am literally iced in my house (not at Tech), and I do not have my project to work on which is due Monday. What to do? Hope and pray I can get back with plenty of time to finish tom. Hope our teachers are very understanding.

Just drive over here and work on it. This is nothing compared to what we get in the North.

yeah really. the north has it soooo bad. people here in the south don't know what to do when they see a flake of snow. wait, they do... they cancel school. sheesh.

1) chip the ice off your car windows/doors/mirrors/headlights
2) salt/sand your driveway
3) drive to georgia tech. the major roadways here are clear.
4) finish your project, and stop complaining.
it's really not that difficult.

I don't find the previous post a complaint. You people get so rude about the small things. The person just asked what to do in a situation he/she is not used to. When it comes down to driving on ice, NO ONE is experienced ( I don't care if you are from the North or not) ! I think that if their well-being and safety are a risk whatsoever, DON'T DO IT!!! It is not worth risking your safety in order to complete a project. P.S. 16 miles of 75 were shut down today>>>many people use that to get to school; therefore, don't be stupid and put your safety at risk.

Hey everyone - please keep the TA posts on the soapbox, at least until tomorrow evening or so. The majority of groups in all three sections have not signed up for meetings yet - if you're in one of those groups, please sign up ASAP! Thanks, Kristin

KRISTIN's GROUP: Three groups (plus Alstan's group) have not signed up for meetings with me yet! You MUST do this. On Wednesday, I can meet with two groups at each of the posted signup times (in fact, I would prefer this), even if the two groups have different design scenarios. Please edit the KJH Meetings page accordingly. See you tomorrow!

remember: the research dossiers are 25% of the grade for 1012. regular meetings with your ta will help you and your group monitor your progress. research is cumulative. leaving it for the end guarantees a 'U', unsatisfactory, grade. which means youve [&!@#!] away 1/4th of your semester's grade. keep in regular touch with your ta so that you can schedule weekly meetings. kristin's signup sheets are outside my office door, room 209. sk

ahhhhh

Out of curiosity...what exactly does [&!@#!] mean? :)

on the ex.4 page, the link for ex. 4.2 is actually the 4.3 handout.... think we can do something about that?

To everyone in first year studio (as well as anyone else you know at Tech!) A few of your studio peers could use some feedback from you. We are taking a class about Human-Computer interaction (ID majors take note), and we need to get some feedback about our project. We are working on developing a system to aid freshman (as well as upperclassmen) on campus. It would work through your cell phone, and hopefully offer features such as maps to class, PRS compatability, friend location, etc. It would be a great help if you could complete this survey http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gtg445h/form.html
Thank you for the help. It might interest you all to know that there is actual research being done on this topic and the idea of a campus guide is seriously being considered. Your responses may help shape the final product.
  • btw: this class is appropriate to more than just id students. i co-teach it every summer in bcn. take it sometime and use the clear thinking skills developed in cfy to wow the kids in this class. sk
  • You would have been proud today, Sabir. We have about 8 CoA students in this class, and we seem to kill when we are allowed to work together on any assignment. Also, if you liked the Design of Everyday Things reading, it is required for this class. It's really an amazing book.

Sabir, could I ask you a huge favor? Now that we have the survey set up as a website, could you send an e-mail to the freshman here with it?
  • done

Good job goes out to the person who decided to assign an assignment about light and shadow during one of the most rainy and overcast times of the year
  • actually its not, when you check average conditions for atl in feb. we had three sunny days a couple of days ago, three more starting tomorrow. plan your work. check the weather.

The research dossier conflicts with studio. I assume that most people agree with me when I say that we have a lot of studio work. This studio work is manageable but stretches me pretty thin when combines with other classes. Along comes the dossier, which is essentially telling me that I need to teach myself how to create a building project. Unlike studio, I have no real aide on this dossier because my group members are either apathetic or just as confused as I am. Of course, it really helps that my TA is almost impossible to understand and provided me with absolutely no insight into the project when we met. In summary, I am expected to complete 2 comprehensive studio exercises in a few days (and whatever follows) while studying every little nuance that pertains to my semi-vague dossier brief. This all, of course, constitutes a mere quarter of my studio grade making me wonder which requires my focus more: studio or this idiotic dossier.
  • this could be the easiest 25% of a 4-credit hour course grade. each group needs to identify and organize the tasks required; if each took responsiblity to fill up two of the six categories on the template, you would be done in three weeks, with a week left over for organizing the material.
  • curious whether youve actually reviewed all the material available for you online and on permanent reserve. most everything has already been collected in one place for you. what you have to do is consult it. which im afraid does require effort.
  • regarding apathetic group members: alert your ta. by the way your ta is available to you at other times as well. email him/her; set up an individual meeting apart from the regularly scheduled group meeting.
  • the library staff has put together online tutorials to help you use online databases. you can also request ms kathy brackney, the arch librarian, to give you a quick intro.
  • again: 1012 online course reserves has great reference materials for all 21 topics. some references are useful for all 21; those helpful for specific topics are identified as such.
  • this is a research exercise, not a "create a building project". the research template has about six categories for which you have to find information. proceed in an organized manner and you will be able to accomplish much. sk

before getting pissed that students dont show up for an "optional lecture" you should keep in mind that there was lots of them working on studio work and research dossiers at the time of the lecture, and that some students may even try to have a life outside of the cfy, especially the ones who are not going into arch

You guys seriously need to chill a little. Remeber to be tactful in the way that you respond to things. Complaining gets you nowhere b/c you are eventually going to have to do it anyways. Take it easy...it will all be ok!

The design of the new Atlanta Symphony Center was unveiled today. It will be built within the next decade at the corner of 14th and Peachtree beside the new tower currently under construction. AJC Article

I went to the design unveiling, but they didn't let Calatrava talk. I thought that was kind of a dissappointment. He did do this cool thing where he painted while the conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra played solo on the piano. That was pretty impressive. Sabir, you should try to nab him while he is in Atlanta for a lecture... that ought to bring in the people.

Please Help me! I left a light purple 128mb Memory stick in studio last week. (Sony I think, but may be MagicGate, I can't remember) I have looked EVERYWHERE for it, so it must be there somewhere. I left it near (or maybe in...?) the computers in the CFY Studio. It has pictures of the Van Leer Building on it. If you have seen it PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE call me or email me because I need the pictures off of it ASAP! Thanks, Lindsey 678-386-1013 gtg575w@mail.gatech.edu!

I think I saw a memory stick like that in the third floor computer lab in the back right corner.

I'm kinda happy about the research project. If I learn nothing else, I've learned one thing: I'd never wanna be a BC major! I guess CFY is very good at showing not only what you can do, but also what you CAN'T do. :-)
  • and what i've learned this year is that the cfy has absolutely nothing to do with BC. the only loose connection that can be made is the fact that in BC 2610, you have a few drafting assignments. after the fall semester of their second year, BC students will never again use anything they learned in the cfy
  • Or what you DON'T want to do

the symphony center is incredibly beautiful. check out that link for a video of the building.

gotta love drunk cooldazing

I would have sworn that studio would be packed tonight..but no..i'm so ronery..it's only 3..am..

Who's the architect of that of the symphony center? Looks like a Calatrava bldg to me (and yes, I probably butchered that name).

It is a Calatrava.

I hear the rumors. Is the Weds. lecture really mandatory now?

  • yes.

With the instructor stating that weds. lecture was not mandatory, there has to be a formal notice that attendance has become mandatory with plenty of notice (according to the students handbook). Otherwise, we as students are allowed to contest the final grade.

Guys,
Understandably many of you don't care to go to the lectures and participate in part of your education (b/c so many of you complain about none of this pertaining to bc), but it in all honesty the first lecture given was awesome. The reason Sabir is so irritated (granted he did state it was by choice if you wanted to go or not) is because when he said that he didn't think that none of you guys would show up. If more than 30 people had gone to the last one then I don't think it would have been that big of a deal. But YES he did state that they have become mandatory. If you haven't come atleast come and see what they are talking about this semester.
  • I want Sabir to announce that it is mandatory..not you and I at least raised my hand when he asked who wasn't coming to the lectures.
  • You don't make any sense. But it's cool, when you don't go and get a bad grade I am going to laugh
  • It is even cooler when people write huge run-on sentences. Although you're attending COA 1012 lecture, you certainly aren't attending ENGL 1102.
  • I haven't taken an English class in four years..sorry I'm not a freakin freshman.
  • Well I guess you didn't really "participate in part of your education" now did ya?

Honestly I don't know what it is about the whole "I'm better than you b/c I'm not a freshmen and I'm in the Couch building" b/c I'm not a freshmen either. I'm a transfer student, (i'm a sophmore, but i'm still a transfer) and I'm in the Architecture building. You were a freshmen once. If Anything you should be jealous of them b/c they at least have ambition and know what they want to do in their life. When they are in their "fourth year" they aren't going to be taken studio 1012 like you are. They will be making money or applying to grad school. You, however, are trying to act like you are better then them b/c you didn't know what you wanted to do when you were a freshmen, and all of your old friends are probably making money right now, getting nice jobs, and settling down with the rest of their life, and you are jealous of that. While you are still trying to get your undergraduate. You aren't fooling anyone. It sounds to me like you are a very bitter person. So get over it and we are all goign to be in the same studio area next year, and you are going to graduate with us. So Stop it with the mentality that you need to tell us to participate in our education. Sabir doesn't know who writes these things so you aren't getting any browny points. Get over yourself man. You are no better than anyone else.

Check out Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis architects...www.ltlwork.net They have some awesome projects that experiment with cheap materials in architecture. It says they are giving a lecture this wednesday on the website. I'm not sure if its the lecture during the day or night but you should all definatly go hear them talk.

He already did announce that it was mandatory...IN CLASS!
  • this is correct...to the person above, you obviously don't know it's madatory b/c you weren't in class to hear it
  • to the person above..maybe i wasn't in class because IT WASN'T MANDATORY (obviously I wasn't the only one) and I personally will not benefit from them besides the extra hour of sleep. So if Sabir would kindly send out an email or write it in the soapbox that lecture has become mandatory, then that would be great. He cannot penalize us for changing his mind and then only announcing it to 30 out of 200 people. In order for this decision to be formal, he has to write it down and send it to everyone. If he does not do this, I will appeal my grade at the end of the semester.

Does anyone know where I can find information about what is inside the walls of the stairwell for 4.4?

I went to the last lecture, and it was very interesting. I think it does benefit students greatly to go to these lectures. However, if Sabir gives the option not to come, I don't see how he can be upset if the vast majority don't come. It was not going to be a great suprise of what was going to happen.

  • First, you can't announce at an optional lecture that all following lectures are mandatory. That is not an official announcement even if it comes from Sabir. I don't think Sabir is the kind of spiteful person who would ignore regulations and do that. Second, I am a non-freshman in CFY and am not resentful. We are all the same in CFY, and it sounds like the guy whining before about us being "arrogant" was being a hypocrit. Get over yourselves, CFY is no accomplishment, we need to see how many of us will stay until our senior year, how many of us will stay through grad school, this entire school is a test of perserverence.

This little message goes out to the person who refuses to believe that COA 1012 lecture has dropped its optional class attendance policy. Whether you want to believe that this change is “official” or not is ridiculous and I suggest that you grow up. If you doubt it so much then why don’t you come out from behind your computer and discuss the matter with Sabir himself. All that it shows me and the rest of your classmates is that you are an immature pathetic excuse for a student. The proverbial Milk has been spilled and you were left with two options: 1. clean it up and move on, or 2. cry about it. You obviously chose the later and not only has it become a mess but the milk has soured. I ask Sabir that if he does see this message that he DOES NOT post anything about the change in the attendance policy. I think that this would force some of you that refuse to claim any responsibility for your own lazy actions to recognize the ways of reality. I am ashamed to associate myself with such lazy wastes of life. I am 22 years old and this is my 4th year of college and I never placed myself above any of you. When I came to GaTech I came respecting its prestige and its student body because I wanted to see where I stood amongst some of the best, but you have tainted that sense of pride. I came here looking for competition and to compete with some of the nations finest, but you serve as no competition. I refuse to hide behind Technology like the wimps on this message board that can complain and leave their statements anonymous. My name is Andrew Brown and I could CARE LESS what anyone thinks about my statements.
  • wow, some people must be really upset that they are alone and have so much time to argue about something so stupid. It's not like it would take a lot of time for Sabir to answer that person's question.
  • It must suck for you to be so old and crotchety. And what a btch would ask Sabir and try to get him to ignore another students' requests. "I never placed myself above any of you"; well obviously you lied. So why don't you shut up and go back to your little hole in the wall at couch.

So, how 'bout them braves?

i love lamp

Okay, so here's my Valentine's Day situation.

I'm single, male, and an architecture student. I have bright red hair and bright blue eyes. I have been told by numerous people that I am very attractive/cute/adorable/gorgeous but I have no Valentine's day date. Any takers?

...probably not dude

What a coincidence, I like a girl in studio

i'm a lonely guy.

There's a lot of lonely guys here....it's Tech. Some just console that with a few rounds of Halo and poker....

Okay here's a question. In 1060 one of the lecturers made a certain comment. She said, “There is a saying about being a writer. If you’re a writer, but you have the ability to be anything else…then don’t be writer…the same thing goes for being an architect.” My question is what exactly was she trying to convey?
Once again I'm asking a question that hasn't been answered.

I think they're ignoring you...

"Your mom goes to college!"
  • Attend ENGL 1102 much? I believe the correct word is "your."

"Like anyone could ever know that."

"peace out"

translation please?

"If going to church makes you a Christian, does going to the garage make you a car?"

please don't delete things from the soapbox that you did not type.

christianity is SOOOOO overrated.

THE MAN PUNTED BAAAAAAXTER!

Christianity i believe is a process and going to church is not enough for one to claim to be a christian.

How would I go about making an appointment with my advisor? Aren't you supposed to do it online or something?

you should email them but don't count on them responding. I emailed my advisor two weeks ago and again this past weekend and still no response.
  • you should ALWAYS go by your advisor's office to make an appointment. advisors are very busy and keep schedules in their offices for you to sign up for. its far more efficient than sending emails into the ether. sk

What happen to the debate (slashing) of Christianity, that all yall got? Man, i guess yall just dont know about all the intolerant things it says.

So gutter, so ghetto, so hood
So gully, so grimey, what's good?

christianity is more than just going to church. I think you have to have a relationship and God, which includes talking and praying to him, to be a christian. You can't just go to church and say that you are a good person and be a christian. And no... going to the garage does not make you a car.

Christ died for EVERYONE. Whoever accepts him as savior and pursues a relationship with him can be saved, thus being a Christian. That's pretty amazing if you think about it.

do you actually believe that some dude walking around in sandles two thousand years ago was God incarnate... human spirituallity is too personal a thing to organize into religions

Simply lovely weather we're having... wouldn't you say?

today was an amazing day...too bad i spent it in studio.

I AGREE!!

any body know when the thing at the high museum is where you can get in free with a college id?

men... U love them even if U really want to hate them.

the DAZE page is back!

"Pretty shocking how passive and clueless you allow yourselves to become"

- that's a bit harsh, don't you think? There are usually at least three other classes that we are dealing with (besides studio). And believe it or not, it may not have been as intuitive to us as you think. I know it makes sense to you, but please remember how much more familiarity you have with this system and process. We're here to learn, and sometimes we miss stuff. Yes, now i'm kicking myself, but i really don't need help in that area. -JB
  • its not about intuition. and im certainly not referring to most of you. (in fact kristin reports that in her topics, 1-7, most have done great work with one or two significant exceptions). all im referring to is taking responsibility and paying attention: not knowing where the online materials for the research project are – not even remembering that online reserves are accessed thru the library website – not asking a question when one doesnt know the answer; leaving a project unattempted until the last weekend; all this is not exactly proactive behavior. kathy brackney has put together a phenomenal website full of research resources. she's put in at least a hundred hours doing this. she continues to add to it– yesterday she spent a full day researching standards for topic 3. with all this material there for you to make use of, all weve been asking yall to do for the past four weeks is to at least check it out, see whats there, ask questions if its not all clear, figure out a plan of action (even if it is to leave everything to the last minute). sk

in court i never show up like austin power's faja, father, father, and hey i love gooooooold!

What's just awesome is that the "display and exhibit handbook" on reserve for 1012 isn't even in the Arch. library. I don't mind walking up to the main collection to find it, but if you're going to criticize us for not pouring every ounce of our beings into this research project, at least hold up your end of the bargain, sk, and have the materials you so adamantly expect us to reference gathered together in architectural fellowship as opposed to strewn across this depressing campus.
  • the stuff is on reserve for you. most of it is in the arch library or online. some material is in the main library. which is a three-minute walk. sk
  • unless you are very out of shape and highly overweight, that probably isn't even close to a three minute walk–it's acros the freakin street. why complain about such stupid things?

bla

bla, back at ya

you know, it is polite to say hello to someone when they say hello to you.

i'm so single.

me too :)

yep :D

That's what studio will cause...singleness

Not always.. I have someone but he just happens to be a 5 1/2 hour drive away, lol

I'm certainly not single. Studio doesn't run my life though.

I'm single indirectly because of studio.

There was a wall in the architecture building with a badger living inside of it. A stranger walking by asks, "Wall in the architecture building, why is there a badger inside of you?"

"I'm not a wall in the architecture building," said the wall in the architecture building. "I'm a badger hole."
  • interesting reading of the skin of your sliver of the building. what do these interrelationships represent?

...wtf...

LOST!! MEMORY CARD!! I left a memory card in the computer in Studio on Thursday. It looks very similar to the ones we are allowed to rent. Did any pick it up or see anyone take it? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i saw one earlier today (monday) in one of the card readers in the studio

Dossie doh dosssie doh

how did everyone do today?

got back the sleep i missed from last night...thats how i did

CFY MAR kicks off TOMORROW with DAVID YOCUM, an architect who has been working with Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, one of the premier American architectural practices.

Check out their work at http://www.msmearch.com/

David will talk about the projects he has had direct experience with or responsibility for. He will also talk about some projects he has done on his own.
His goal is to give you a sense of what it is like "10 years out" of school.

David got degrees in american history and studio art from Dartmouth. He got his M.Arch from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard.

See you there.
Sabir

I think I might be transferring to Ohio State.....

why?

Sabir,

Are you still going to have an guest lecturer speak on historic preservation?

that was the first lecture i havent fall asleep during in a long time

That lecture made me want to look into Ohio State. That building is awesome.

That one building? He had a few awesome ones, like the car research center and his own house. Never seen an industrial site turned around to look that good. This guy's got talent

Post your Dossier complaints here

  • TA's who say your doing great every week until you meet the night before.... when all of your stuff is suddenly "wrong". No wonder Sabir thinks all of our dossiers are sub-par.
  • no i dont think that. now that youve collected information for the six categories, you need to format it in a way that is both useful and usable. your studio discussions will help with this. were you able to introduce the material in each section by summarizing it? were you able to identify the major issues? dont fret. you have until sunday noon to fill in the gaps, rearrange, summarize sections. you are almost there. sk
  • how is section 5 different from section 4 in the dossier?
  • section 4 is for precedents; examples of projects that a designer might find helpful to look at, refer to, get inspired by. section 5 asks for empirical analysis: observation of real world situations or operations, user behaviour, measured drawings, etc. not all design topics lend themselves to empirical analysis but some certainly do. like the ones that deal with desks, sound, light, carts, etc. if you have an example of what you are studying readily available to analyze, observe, study, unpack, then section 5 is for you. check with your ta. sk

cmon barbie lets go party
ah ah ah yeah

HAHA, you kids stayed in this nonsense...still sucks doesn't it? The real brains at this school rolled out last semester. I'll try to muffle the laughing from now on.
  • WTF? Are you kidding me? The real brains at this school are the ones who are still here–not giving up on our dreams because of a little hard work. If it were easy to achieve our goals and dreams, there would be nothing to strive for in life. Go f yourself you loser living a worthless and boring life.
  • you do realize that if it were his/her dream to be an architect he/she would still be in studio? maybe it wasn't for them and instead of hanging around and annoying us, they left. That doesn't make them a bad person. Making fun of those who do stick it out, however, does.

for real it was to hard for you but you probly still check the soap box on a regular basis what a loser

yay we get to "clear our heads" by relaxing and doing a recap, and a research dossier
  • oooh oooh oooh, don't forget about documentation!!

just so you know...noone calls it a bibliography anymore, its a works cited list now. times have changed

Actually, they're two different things. "works cited" is for when you've actually cited them (parentheticals or footnotes). "bibliography" is everything else that you've consulted, for background knowledge, etc.

  • ya know the old saying "a picture's worth a 1000 words"..wish those words would float into my dossier

I want studio b illustrations to come back - even though studio b is different now

Studio B rocks
  • will take note of this, thanks :)

Studio 200 is always there for you, but we've kinda stopped posting. It's been hectic around here. Any requests?

Studio200 rocks like WHOA
and we've stayed together through the semesters

whoopie for you...woud you like a cookie?

that's scary

To the person asking if I would like a cookie - yes?

IF you give a mouse a cookie...
"Ok guys just enjoy your weekend except don't forget finish up putting together your Research Dossier, preparing for EX. 5 and documenting Ex. 4. Other than that...enjoy. Remember not to get any sleep as well."

gatman and robbin'

Back to the person replying yes to a cookie. Ill get you one on Sunday just look for me...ill be documenting on thinkhe computer around 11, 12 at night Sunday...

im not as an as you drunk i think

Have you written your Ex.4 reflection?

This is ridiculous.....Rest this weekend, but finish your research dossier and write the Ex. 4 reflection by Sunday, as well as document Ex. 4. The architecture brass had to know what the hell they were doing with scheduling a review and the presentation of the dossier in the same week.....that was just bad timing. Yeah, OK....."Rest this weekend, but do A, B, and C...." Hopefully, we'll get to a point in these four years where these instructors and such aren't so contradictive.
  • :)

Which computer? I want my cookie!

You're in architecture school - you're not supposed to get to rest. I agree that they shouldn't have said that we were going to, though.

where do we post the dossiers?

  • You turn them in on a CD to your TA.

Reflection 4 = garbage
garbage: unwanted or useless material-

I AGREE!!!!

Confused...ARE WE OR NOT SUPPOSED TO POST DOSSIERS?!?!?!?!?
  • The TAs will post the dossiers.

i dont know about you guys but i think its kind of cool that the reflection prompt is themed about a crime scene investigation, maby the next prompt can be themed about a different show like amercian idol or something
  • it would have been cooler if there was a survey with an option for more comments

wow thats so cool...

When do we get our dossier grades????????
  • after spring break. the gtas and i have to meet, go over the dossiers, and go over your evaluations of your group members. sk

You get them whenst you least expect them . . .

When do we do the group member evaluations?

i must give props to our GTA's who had to spend a whole lot of time speaking to all the groups every week and listening to our complaints while trying to answer our questions as nicely as they could even if they wanted to strangle us sometimes. :-) u 3 are appreciated.

I can't stand the language of the reflection prompts. Trying to figgure out how the bad metaphors relate to what I need to say is a real barrier to actually writing.

maybe you need to start by learning how to spell "figure".

I'm sorry, but why did whoever did the rooftop garden dossier insist on making it 280 f|_||ing (trying to type the f-bomb in 1337!) pages long? it's taking my computer FOREVER to download it!

darn those people who give us good usable dossiers full of data

ya know, it wouldn't hurt to think a bit "outside the box" in life... because for some of us who can't afford the printers to print out that much paper, we must abide by the print limitations of the institute, but then again, I guess people like u just don't take that into consideration because after all, it must be our fault that we can't print 280 pages from the school, right!?!?

you can print an unlimited number of pages for free if you just print to central printing. you just have to plan ahead because you cant pick it up until the next day. plus you get 100 pages a week per group member in the library. the dossier didnt have to cost you anything
  • plus dossiers are available in the library to consult and make copies only when necessary!!!

you know what, honestly, why do people like you have to take every damn word on something called the "soapbox" so seriously... i mean for real, what's your problem? when i made the first comment, it was completely tongue-and-cheek, but then u act all big and bad like im being an ass of a student, and im not! why don't u just get a frickin' sense of humor! Oh, and btw, im the writer for the Technique who originally wrote the story on central ps, thank you, so you are not enlightening me on anything new... i simply prefer NOT to waste trees! Don't believe me, check the nique.net archives, my name's Emily Tate!

Woah... so anyone watch the Braves beat the Yankees?

CFY Peeps:
Many thanks to those who answered the survey. I got some very helpful responses. Some were also very thoughtful and made me think about the problems that were presented by bus stops in new ways. Once again, I appreciate the help and support...you all have been a big help!
~Keith Smith :: D3

I'd just like to say "Thanks!" to the group that did the dossier I have to use for Exercise 5. While it may be a million pages long, it is no help. It was my understanding that the SUMMARIES were supposed to summarize the main information found as dictated by the outline provided and then presented in each section. Not be a one sentence gloss of what might be in the section, if I am lucky enough to find it. I am now sifting through pages and pages of scanned codes and photocopies from books, as well as full webpages(adverts and all, just stuck in the pdf) to try and find the information that I need. The table of contents for each section are not even labeled with page numbers. Is it really that hard? Y'all read the information... Share it with the user, don't make them do all the work. You provided me with a plethora of information, but now I have to be the one to read it all and draw conclusions, which was part of the original assignment.
Thanks guys!

Just so you know, you are not the only one encountering this problem. But, realize that the way you learn things is through researching. Granted they should have established a better dossier, you doing the research is going to add good info. This project should be about having fun with your space in a sense of doing what you want to do to it. Relax and enjoy the project.
Are you loved?

Does this sound like torture to you?

DID YOU ONCE HAVE A CAMERA
BUT CANT FIND IT ANYMORE?

Well if you edit the soapbox describing the camera and leaving an email, you can win.....A CAMERA!!

let's see if i can describe every digital camera:
1. it has one lens with a 3x zoom
2. It has an LCD screen
3. The color is...silver

well you're wrong. mine only meets one of your criteria.

not a lot baby girl just a little bit...

Does the camera have a condom dispenser on it?

I appreciate that a certain TA is giving us an extra chance to improve our dossiers, but why wait over week and then surprise us with the suggestion to work on our dossiers further (and then tell us we only have a week to do it)? Great. As if I had nothing else to do the week before spring break.

If you're in my section, please have your COMPLETELY COMPLETED dossiers AND CDs to me by Sunday - I'll be around ALL day. Thanks! Kristin

How can you access your COA account from your home computer? I can do it from mine but i am home this weekend and have to use my parents computer. But i dont remember how. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

Such a beautiful day...

...you could say that again

i get mine the fast way

hey....its a baltimore love thing

i love it when you are lead to believe that you are researching all the right things for your dossier for six weeks. then after you turn it in, you are told it is all wrong, must redo the majority of it...and have it all done in one week. during that same week, you just happen to be working your ass off coming up with design proposals for the worthwhile portion of 1012. why the short deadline to repair a dossier that you were lead to believe is right when there is no longer an immediate need for the dossier? wasn't the point of getting the damn things done to aid in the research and design process of ex 5? if we are already well into ex 5 and our dossier is as worthless as we're led to believe it is, why must we redo it so fast? wouldn't a lil longer than a week to redo a whole project that was supposed to take six weeks to do be fair? i guess not...but then again, has anything that the coa has thrown our way during the cfy been fair? life sucks.
  • now that youve vented, you could do what some of your peers have done: discuss the situation with me. im sure it is not as miserable and unfair as you describe it. sk

To those dossier groups that inserted entire pages into their data section: here's a thought...Why not just insert the information that is needed? If I wanted to see entire pages I'd just go to the arch. library and look at the book. At least its pages are numbered and organized properly.

some ta's wanted entire pages.

You really expect people to scan stuff, cut the relevant information, and paste in a new document?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do. I did what was expected of me - I pulled out relevant information so as to HELP the next person to read the dossier. Scanning and cropping relevant information shouldn't be rocket science - theoretically you've already read said pages. Laziness is no excuse for producing work of a poor quality.

Dossier E1, Group 2 (you know who you are)...sorry, it didn't help. no good. try again later.

everyone did their jobs according to their TA's discretion and having too much information doesnt hurt... u just gotta read a little. stop complaining becuz having something is better than nothing.

Actually, NOT everyone did their job according to their TA's discretion. That's why we're getting graded on this...those that didn't do the job will probably fail. Too bad we also have to suffer the wrath of bad dossiers.

Alright, guys, so most of the dossiers are incomplete/hard to use/bad in some sort of way - that shouldn't surprise you. The dossiers and this current project were meant as learning experiences, not just how to write a dossier, but how to use what you're given. Not everyone knows (or knew) how to manipulate scans to their best advantage - for example, how to cut and paste the information you scan in. Some groups' schedules made it very difficult to do everything perfectly and get everything right. Remeber, no one is perfect - and I'm sure, regardless of who you are or how much work you did, there's something you did wrong or information you missed. let those without sin cast the first stones...

i find it highely unlikely that some people do not know how to manipulate scans. this is due to the fact that we have to document our work after every single exercise. all it takes is a little use of the cropping tool (which, by the way, is as easy as dragging a box around the desired area and pressing enter). stop pulling that crap about people having to read through the pages of data. the whole point of the dossier was to research (which involved xeroxing and documenting) and then distilling (which involves pulling out relevant information so that only the usefull parts are left). seriously, i don't need to see every page of a website you ran across while researching. you don't provide any insite to why the whole page of information was useful either. by failing to limit the dossiers to useful information, all you are doing is handing the people who are designing a stack of xeroxes and telling them that there might be something useful in them. in doing so, you are doing is hurting everyone else.

  • To put this into perspective, my TA explicitly told us not to edit out the extra information. They also told us summaries should be as short as a single paragraph; my group only followed instructions.

I hope Sabir and the TAs will take into account that many groups had some pretty lazy people who didn't do very much work. I hope the hard workers aren't penalized for that.
  • this is the procedure: you fill out peer review forms for all members of your group and turn in the forms on wednesday, march 30, during lecture. then i will sit down with each of the ta's and go over the research dossiers with them. sk

You people find anything and everything to btch about. Seriously, chill out do the research yourself and get something out of it as opposed to constantly bitching ALL the time. I am sure you wouldnt pull this crap with your boss or other employers. Mind you, if you choose to do that, you wont last very long at all.
  • however since sabir doesn't sign my checks, i can continue bitching all i want. wow this dossier is so stupid. it sucks. why do i have to do it? this has nothing to do with what im majoring in. theyre just trying to torture me arent they?

what parts of the change of major form do we have to fill out?
the parts that someone changing his or her major needs to fill out

sabir...just need a bit of clarification:
CHANGE OF MAJOR forms due TO OUR INSTRUCTOR by march 30
PEER REVIEW forms due IN LECTURE on march 30
?
  • yes, so tr sections need to bring their change of major forms, ALONG with everything else in that package (student data form, essay form, essay itself) to class on tuesday, march 29, mwf sections on wednesday march 30.
peer review forms due in person on march 30 in lecture.

  • How might one obtain a change of major form if we didnt already get one???
  • we printed out a package for every student. if you were not in the studio when they were distributed, your section instructor will have yours. REMEMBER: there are four parts to this package: the change of major form, the student data form, the essay form, and the essay that you will type. all should be returned together to your section instructor. sk

Is it necessary for us to get signatures on the change of major forms?
  • if your OLD major is NOT a coa major, yes you need to get your old major to sign the form. if your old major is a pre-coa major, then you do not need to worry about signatures. sk

Would we be penalized if our essays weren't dangerously close to 500 words? For example, if one had a 300-word essay, would his chances of getting into his major be slimmer?

if their decision on where the rest of our life is headed is decided according to how many words we have in our essay...then they have serious issues

Where do we get an essay form if we dont have one/cant find it?
  • outside room 209

yeah....like, I really want to be an architect or whatever, but ummmm, you know....500 words is like a lot of words. I might have to spend, like an hour or something writing this stupid essay. Like, I want to be an architect and all, but this essay might take, you know, effort or something. I think that, you know, like 100 words, is more fair. I think that I can express, you know, what I want to say in like, ten sentences?

somebody had a crappy spring break...

http://www.gizoogle.com/

  • Are we having a real class today in lecture or just turning in the dossier peer forms?
  • check the lecture schedule on the posters. you missed a good lecture
  • i disagree. scripted lectures are lifeless. oh well, what can you expect out of an architect?
  • seriously, that lecture blew, he was so uninteresting and his designs look the same as most of the other ones we've seen this semester, can't somebody design anything cool anymore? this abstract stuff gets annoying really quick
  • if you have half a brain, you dont need to be entertained in order to learn. yes today's talk was written out. perhaps it was because the speaker wanted to clearly spell out some important ideas. jerry goux is a thoughtful, careful, designer and builder, someone who has accomplished much and on his own terms. grow up guys.
  • Have a little respect for the people who take time out their schedules to lecture to us. It's kinda of rude to insult the lectures on the soapbox when this is something Sabir is doing for our benefit.

  • Speaking of Sabir, did anyone notice he said "when John was designing our condo..."? I find that very interesting and intriguing if I heard correctly that one of Sabir's former students designed and built his house. Did the speaker really design your home Sabir? Were any of those pictures of it?
  • I said, "when Jerry was building". Yes Jerry did show some photos (the open plan apartment with the folded/vaulted ceiling and the view of the horizon thru the floo-to-ceiling glass (the last shot). I dont think anyone in town could have fabricated that ceiling with the craft that Jerry showed. By the way Jerry was not a student of mine; I havent been here that long!! sk

Working on AutoCAD has also been of enormous help for my project because it has allowed me to visualize my project at a greater speed than hand-drawn lines. I can also change and alter my ideas without having to waste hours trying to make sure my vellum is clean or redrawing accidentally erased lines. I know we should practice our hand drawings but if you have a chance to learn AutoCAD because it will make your design process and ideas soooooo much easier.

Sweet, it's 5:30 AM and I've been here all night!

um...why?!?!

if you were in tina's section, you might understand

...Why?...How can you ask why? Are you honestly saying you've never had to stay up all night working on CFY projects?

nope..the latest ive ever been up is 2

if you manage your time right you don't have to stay up all night.

I always get more work accomplished overnight than during the day. Fewer distractions, easier access to computer resources. I prefer it to working during the day, actually. Now, if they can just offer a midnight - 3AM studio.

sadly enough, i know plenty of people that would jump at the opportunity for a midnight-3AM class... and I'm one of them :D

so am i.
  • I would too! Sabir..consider this for future cfy...

Early this morning, an electrical outlet in the CFY Studio shorted out. Unfortunately, with the abundance of flammable material around, the fire spread quickly. There isn't any structural damage to the studio, but a few students’ projects were destroyed. The CFY instructors have been notified and if your project was destroyed, we've decided to give you three extra days to finish up.

team OMBRA – check your e-mail!! We're meeting Sunday at 1:00.

When do we get Dossier Grades?

What happens if we make an A in studio, and a B on our dossier. What would be the final grade in the class?

isnt the lecture class 25% of our overall grade and the dossier is supposedly the only grade for the 1060 class? and at tech... an A is an A is an A.

Since the instructors give Letter Grades, we might have something like. A in studio. C on dossier. This would avg. to 3.5. Will that give an A or B? The real question is, what number is the cutoff?
  • its a little more fine-grained than that. your instructors will give you a letter grade with plusses and minuses: A+, A-, B+, etc. as far as the cutoffs for calculating the grade back into a final grade, (the straightup As Bs and Cs that gatech requires), we may lower the threshold for an A (as we did for 1060 last fall). regarding the dossier grade: i am meeting with the gta's next week and will have them to you the following. sk

If you like Sabir and you know it, clap your hands.

SO are we having a lecture this wednesday or not?? Sabir's email said that two lectures were cancelled, and i know we have 3 more wednesdays before dead week.

no. no. and no. mayb... no.

  • the invited lectures for apr 6 and apr 13 have been cancelled. there was no apr lecture scheduled for the 20th.
  • HOWEVER: COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE ALUMNI/ALUMNAE HAVE STARTED A MENTORING PROGRAM. BASICALLY THEY WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE AS MENTORS TO COA UNDERGRADUATES. IN THE PAST THEYVE HOSTED PIZZA EVENINGS. BUT STARTING NEXT YEAR THEY WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN WORKING WITH SOPHOMORES, MENTORING THEM THRU UNTIL THEY GRADUATE AND BEYOND.
  • IVE INVITED A MEMBER FROM THE COA ALUMNI/AE GROUP WHO IS ORGANIZING THE MENTORING PROGRAM TO COME SPEAK TO THE cfy wednesday april 13. THE TALK SHOULD NOT TAKE MORE THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL OF YOU TO COME. IT MIGHT PROVE TO BE A VERY IMPORTANT FIFTEEEN MINUTES. REMEMBER, ITS ALL ABOUT THE EARLY BIRD AND THE EARLY WORM. ILL BE SENDING OUT AN EMAIL WITH INFO TO ALL OF YOU TOMORROW.

they say i talk a little fast, but it you listen faster i ain't gotta slow down for you to catch up

when do we get our group project grades and when do we find out about the change of major application process?

So, maybe you haven't noticed but the studio is overrun with models, drawings, trash, random things, etc. and we are all running out of safe places to put our models...so if you have something that you don't need to work on anymore (like stuff from last semester) could you please make a little room for new work that needs to be stored? THANKS!

LOST!!!!
The other day, I lost a pencil and some loose pieces of trace paper. I think the pencil is blue and 4B and the trace paper is white. If you find, email loser@mail.gatech.edu

I also lost the tray out of my studio box that has lots of crap in it, if anyone has seen it, it would be helpful.

WTF

what makes that cartoon worse is that it tells the truth...

Please, no sound on cooldaze.

Sabir,
Don't you think that giving high-pass and low-pass grades kind of defeats the purpose of the pass/fail concept? Some of us did our dossiers knowing that if we met the requirements, we would pass without it affecting our studio grade. I don't think it is right to change the grading process after the project is over. It wouldn't be fair to make us redo something that should pass or to give us a low-pass grade, when we were told it would be either passing or failing.
Thanks,
An unhappy student
  • dear unhappy student. if you get a pass on your dossier, you get an A. so it will affect (upwards) your studio grade depending on your studio grade. do not be unhappy. sk

Sabir,
I believe the unhappy student was referring to the word on the street right now in regards to the dossier grading. the current rumor is that there will be varying degrees of passing grades (i.e. high passing, average passing, low passing, etc.). is this true? or are there only two possible grades (passing or failing)?
Additional thanks,
A confused student

Congratulations on your architectural expertise. Let me go get you a cookie.

I think the issue with the rumored dossier grading is that some students thought they could make a sub-par but passing dossier and get the same grade as those who put together an excellent dossier. When they say, "met the requirements," they mean "did the bare minimum to pass, which should translate to an A."
  • from the research project description posted on cooldaze:
Grading Policy for Research Dossier
  • Group grade (50%): Based on quality of finished project. Will be graded S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory).
  • Individual Grade (50%): 25% will be based on your TA’s observation of your effort, participation, and attendance at group meetings. 25% will be based on the evaluations provided by your group members after the project is complete. If an individual member of a group gets an unsatisfactory grade for process (effort, participation, etc.) he/she will get a U for the finished project as well.

When will we be able to see these grades?

we will post them by the end of next week. they will also show up on the studio evaluation form your section instructor will give you at the end of the semester. sk

we're getting a large fry instead of two cokes at wingnuts for the #1 combo. cajun seasoning, half old bay half mad buffalo, smell that? mmmmmmmmmmm

well then, does anyone kno what classes s/he gonna be takin next semester???????????????????? cause i have no &^%!$# clue
  • make an appt to meet with the academic advisor of the major youve chosen. go by the arch, bc, or id office and ask for an appt with shawn howson (arch), karen houston (bc), or troy whyte (id). sk
  • karen houston is no longer the bc advisor. the new academic advisor for the bc program is james spencer.

we did that agin

  • when will all the majors be changed?? I would like to register for studio now and I can't. If they have been changed..where should i go to get mine changed?

if you haven't met with your academic advisor, then you should because that's how you will get your major changed so you can register...i think

the registrar's office is processing the changes of major. in the meantime you should meet with shawn, james, or troy to make sure you have the requisite permits. ive given them your names. sk

do we have to take classes next semester?
  • of course you don't have to take classes next semester. You don't even have to go to Georgia Tech at all. I'm sure the atlanta waste management system has some job openings. garbage collection sounds like a good distraction from college.

someone's a little defensive. and thank you for making it clear that its degrading and laughable to work w/ your hands.
  • and someone's a little sensitive. if you look up at my response, I never even implied such a thing. we work with our hands every day in studio, don't we?

yeah i'd definitely compare it to construction or "garbage collection"

This sign was inspired by the mess in the CFY studio. Sure would be nice if yall would pick up your crap in studio every now and then. Semester is almost over so STOP TRASHING OUR WORKSPACE!

Good idea!! Let us all applaud you in your efforts to make our workspace cleaner. Now, we can all rest knowing that the material that we forgot to put up in our locker has been cut up and collaged into one large piece of "art".

  • All materials are 100% ephedra-free studio scraps noticed to have been neglected for weeks. No original drawings, salvagable materials, animals, or studio instructors were harmed in the making of this "art".

never been to canal?

can we please get our dossier grades? it's dead week and we turned in our dossiers 7 weeks ago!
  • dossier grading is almost done. your grades should be with your studio instructors by friday.

  • that doesnt give us a long time to dispute the grades when they end up not being graded straight up pass/fail as originally agreed upon...hmmm i bet this wasnt planned or anything...
  • why do you think they are not being graded pass/fail? we are making sure that the grading standards are the same for the three ta's. by the way there is no time window on "disputing a grade".

photoshop is the bane of my existence

the final chapter.
tonight.
be there.

it's so nice of you to steal someone else's foam board on the day that the project is due. no one has any consideration for others in this studio... i can't wait to get out of the "friendly south."

Just because you're in the South doesn't mean the person who took your foam board is southern...with your attitude, I doubt the South will miss you!!! Bon voyage.

You're right...the person who stole your board is obviously southern. Since everyone here is southern. Assumptions rock my world.

No he/she is right, the south is the only place in the world that people take things. Enjoy utopia.

you know how we do. i mean you probably dont know how we do. but you're about to find out.

1) if one person did it, it doesn't mean he's representative of the entire region.

2) you have no idea who did it. therefore you can't say anything at all

Photoshop is just like any other medium. How you use it and the thought you put behind it is whats important. I'm sick of this mentality of 'photoshop = non-thoughtful'... or perhaps 'photoshop = the devil??'! Photoshop is not special, its the same as drawing, painting, charcoal, etc. etc. its just a different medium!!! get over it

When do the students get to vote on the boards?

What time are the awards ceremony and do we have to go?
  • 1pm will be the official announcement of competition winners. jury panel will offer comments on the work - so its the place you'll want to be!

here is the program for friday's competition jury.

8:00-8:45. jury convenes
8:45-12:30. jury reviews boards, comes to a decision.
1:00. winners announced in the atrium.

please drop by to applaud the winners.

the jury will select five projects for awards. a summary of the juror's comments and selection process will be emailed to all of you over the weekend. there will be no student voting.

the jury process is blind; neither students nor instructors will be involved.

students and instructors may review the boards during the morning but only when the jurors are not present. we would like the jurors to be able to discuss the work without distractions.
