PedEx
PedEx
Overview
PedEx, a year-long set of pedestrian-based exercises, puts students in a space – the narrow band between private property and automobile traffic – that doesn’t get much attention in this city, whether from users, politicians, designers, private developers, or government officials.
The documentary evidence collected during PedEx this fall will provide an opportunity for us to:
- problematize the relationship between the quality of public space and the role design/designers can/ought to play;
- generate information/knowledge about Midtown Atlanta at street-level.
This fall, students, in groups of up to six students each, will document a three- to six-block street segment over a seven-week period.
The focus is on the sidewalk: the pedestrian, and public, zone in the urban fabric. All documentation will proceed from the point of view of a walker walking on the sidewalk, in the narrow space between traffic and buildings.
We have identified 24 street segments in Midtown Atlanta, from the 'new' 17th street in the north to North Avenue in the south. All segments run east-west. Each segment includes the intersections at each end.
All groups will follow the same protocols for observation, collation, and representation. This consistent format will produce a rich and useful data set; it will provide a composite 'picture' of Midtown and it will allow us to make meaningful comparisons between different street and sidewalk conditions.
Students will carry out two kinds of documentation: visual reconstructions of the street as it unfolds in space and over time; and inventories of its material and social qualities. Students will use digital photography, diagrams, thumbnail sketches, and textual descriptions.
Aerial photos and CAD maps are being provided for each street segment. As the project progresses, additional information and materials will be made available. templates, guidelines, and examples for each type of documentation will be provided. The project will require some very basic skills in Photoshop. We will be scheduling tutorial sessions.
The six GTAs will be the primary coordinators for PedEx this fall. Each GTA group will be divided into 8 groups of five or six students. The GTAs will meet weekly (or fortnightly) with each group for half an hour to go over the material collected.
During these meetings the material will be reviewed in hardcopy printouts. The final project will be uploaded onto cooldaze.
