↑ How 'bout dat tiger?!
↑ Wooo! yeah! It's so HOT at the soapbox!
↑ mmm...I'm gonna show you my "O" face.sexy!
welcome
- For anyone in Raja's studio class: how many cardboard experiemnts are we supposed to do?
exactly where are we suposed to post the review?
remember, there is a certain zen to studio
I'm Ron Burgandy?
I think someone should do a restaurant review of Britain or Woodruff Dining Hall!! I would, but I already did mine!
blah
Bite me
Isn't this just dandy?!
what is the differnce between urban and social
Hmm... so who's out there?
I am. How is everyone doing tonight? Like those studio classes?
I am enjoying studio very much, except I take it in Couch...very inconvenient place since I have to rush back to the Arch building for 1060...
this is certainly different...not that i'm complaining- i love studio! charcoal drawings were completely new to me and i had so much fun with them...sometimes 3 hours seems like forever, but then again, i dont think its enought time for my group, we all enjoy each others company so much. anyway. thats all. au revoir!
Has anyone started on their essays yet?
I'm confused about the COA computer account...what am I suppose to do to set that up? Someone HELP ME!!
I havent't started my essay yet. It seems a bit scary to try and write a 700 word essay especially on my street there isn't that much to write about
Amen to that... are we supposed to put anything about 'us' on our "web site?" or just write our ridiculous essay?
I did mine & hope I did it right, but look under your class lists & there are probably some people who have done theirs already. It might help give you some ideas. :)
I bet your glad to be done.
I'm sure s/he is. I know I would be. Good luck everyone!
Damn it people.... it isn't nice to delete someone's movie review.
Hey, hey...watch the language. I know that must be stressful, but go the the page that has your review and look click on history and see if you can find it there, or email one of the TA's for advice.
Does anyone know where to find those readings we read on the first day of 1011? I think I have to write a paper or something on them.... does anyone know about that either? thanks!
your personal page is for you to do as you like. just follow file upload and etiquette guidelines. for your essay for assignment 08.25: think about what it is asking for, follow the outline given and there will be plenty to say. the idea is to get you to think (about what was/is there and its effects on the way life is lived), not just toss out words at random till you get to 700. sk
You the Man Sir
Is the second part of the assignment for 8/25 supposed to be in essay form? Is it supposed to be 700 words too?
Here's a question... does midnight sunday mean saturday night at 12, or sunday night at 12. I would think sunday night, but isnt 12:00 AM considered the next day... so isnt it really sunday morning... am I going crazy, is there no definition of time?
midnight sunday means by 11:59 on sunday night.
this color yellow makes my eyes hurt
yeah, I agree. It gives me a headache.
Hey ya'll. i had the same problem with the movie review that someone had mentioned earlier (about it being erased after it had been posted). i'm not mad about it, because i know i turned it in before the due date, but i would just like to take this opportunity (being on the soapbox and everything) to ask that everyone be as careful as possible when posting ur review, because u never know if uv highlighted something that isn't yours or just made an honest mistake. That mistake might cost someone their review! Like i said, i am not mad at anyone, i know that no one would do anything like that outa spite, just be careful, k!
Does anyone have Pegah Zamani as thier 1011 instructor and know the titles of the two readings?
The two readings are "Drawing us In" and "Learning to See"
Anyone done part 2 of the essay homework?
Nope, but I just finished up Assignment 1.
The one due today?
exactly where are we supposed to post the review?
I think we're supposed to post it in the West Arch. building on Saturday night at 7:30. Yeah, that's right, the building that is supposed to be unlocked until 8:00 P.M.!!! The ghosts of my weary feet shall haunt that blasted building after I die or they are amputated.
I have a question, will someone please explain to me how i free my mind. I am sitting here in my room saying, mind be free, but it just doesn't seem to be working. And because my teacher in studio repeated that phrace about 37 time within a 28 min time period without giving one piece of practical advice on how to accomplish the goal. Im worried that she will notice that i do not have a free mind. Thanks for any free floating minds out there for your help.
footnote: to all the A type personalites that are hung up on all my spelling and grammar mistakes, feel free to go through anything i write and correct it.
What the heck are you talking about posting your review in the architecture building? Just go to the class list & click on your name & edit the page... you can do it on your own computer
I went there to pick up studio supplies, not post my page.
Does anyone know how long this summary needs to be?
Is anybody in English 1101? If so, how do I post an icon on the introductions page?
If you click on history on the reviews page and click on the link that is closest to or right after you posted your review, you will be able to see who deleted yours. Mine was deleted by Jennifer H...Thanks Jenn, you're a real pal.
Is it really so hard to close your html font tags so that they don't carry through the whole page and into other people's text?
Is the article "Drawing us in" online??
Hey .. is someone is reading this.. the personal page we are supposed to do, can I create it and post it and my review from my computor at home? or do I have to be on the gatech network?
You can post on coweb from any computer, on or off campus.
I killed somone's dots
that were making a scroll bar across the bottom of the browser and stretching the box. Sorry.
Any idea how we could sort the Personal Pages by surname? I tried excel, but I'm not that good with it and could only sort by first name.
I think things may get deleted unintentionally because people are writing their reviews directly on coweb and save an older version of the page on top of somone's that had posted while they were working.
Does anyone know where all of the movie reviews went? Mine is gone!
Movie Reviews Page fixed!
if you type the underscore key, you get a line break between soapbox posts.
thank you for fixing the movie reviews page :)
anyone in B3 and Pegah: I got as far as i could trying to find the reading material and it wont let me see it; the online reading material from the library
- if you are looking for the berger and esherick articles: they are available at the library's online reserves (you should have activated your gt id and password through oit or the information center in the main library); copies were also handed out in studio (one per locker); and additional copies are in studio, on the desk at the back.
wow, thank you so much! i was taking a different route oops. are we supposed to just bring the summaries and responses to class or post them online?
- i dont know what pegah told you. so i recommend that you do the readings, write the summaries/responses and take them to class with you. sk
thanks, thats what i thought but there is a summaries page for us to put summaries, but i think you're right, so i'll just bring them to class tomorrow. thanks again
crazy
what's the format for the reading summaries for B3 (Pegah)? single spaced..? double...? will she even care?
To the person in English 1101. Are you talking about doing the web assignments? (it's been so long that I forgot what the title of that system is) If so, do you mean, you want to create an avatar (a little icon next to your name) for your account? If so, I've got the program to do it. e-mail me. gtg121h@mail.gatech.edu
Does anyone one have Datey as their teacher for 1011...its section d3...if so do we have to write summaries on the articles or just read them?
mind be free
Soooo, am I the only one so far enjoying studio?
Nope, I'm loven' it! It's just like being back at GHP, if any of you were there. I know some of you were because I reconize you, but, yeah man, studio rocks!
Anyone else notice what one of the topics on designboom (on of the links in hotspots) is? If it's still up, look to the far right column.
come on, grow up.
- It wasn't meant to be puerile. I just hoped that noticing that might liven someone’s day.
Vote for Pedro!
- I would but I dont have any skills...
are there any mac users in studio, or am i the only one? i mean, it's a really artsy class... and i love my powerbook. i hope they have compatible software for 1011 and 1060!
- the cooldaze logo was designed on an Apple if that makes you feel any better.
has anyone done that essay on your street yet?
I have Datey as my teacher and I'm just as lost as you are. All I remembered was her telling us to read them and her Instructor page doesn't say anything about writing a review.
Does anyone know if the essay can be less than 700 words? I have written 600 words, and feel that there is nothing else left to say about my street!
it's 700 words max according to the assignment page
What does "urban fabric" and "social fabric" mean on 8.25, part 2?
- think about it, analyze the combination of words. look them up on google... there are many ways to figure that out
does anyone elses summary of their street suck?
Don't worry...mine does!
Where are we supposed to write our essay on part 2 of 8.25
- I'd say the same place you put your essay responding to the first part of the essay.
no its due on 8.25 (wednesday)
mind be free
Something wicked this way comes. Hark! Its architecture!
so sleepy.
yes, me too.
Does anybody know where the online survey is?
which one? There is one in oscar. I don't know of any others.
we will let you know when the survey is up. sk
Everyone should have classes only on MWF.
What is urban fabric and social fabric? I am so confused.
Does anyone know if they will be posting the slides from 1060 lectures online?
This is a place where the voices in my head can talk without interruption.
:(
Why is there no HOME button on this entire sight, that drives me nuts!!!! Does anyone agree with me
~Kyle
- click the COOL, man... and you're home sweet home!
- click the top, that will also take you to your home!
the stress is killing me...I can't take it...to much to do...so little time...and its only the second week of school...I NEED A VACATION
trust me, you have enough time to do everything, and you MUST have fun, it will lift some of the stress :-)
To all: Please resume with your summaries.
Last night some of the pages on cooldaze were missing. For the most part the problem is fixed. 2-3 pages may still be missing. If you have any remaining problems or questions, please post them on the Q&A page.
david bucciero
question? For the essay when it says describe the relationship between the social and physical characteristics of your street and how the kinds of spaces it made infulenced the kind of life that took place. What spaces are they referring to and does the pronoun it refer to the street or what?
- ok so ill do some of the work for you. yes, the pronoun refers to the street. if you made an inventory of its social and physical characteristics/qualities, the inventory would help prompt your memory of the kinds of spaces (both social and physical) that it made (or helped make). think of the street as a system (not just as this one thing), think of it as an enabling infrastructure. for example: if the inventory listed tarmac, sidewalk, curbcut, driveway, two-car garage. . . you might begin to think of the neighborly chats (or not), the block parties, the driveway pickup game, the car repair work, or none of this because there was no sidewalk and nobody walked. sk
for part two- is this in essay form? how long does it have to be? and if not, can i just write three seperate paragraphs?
- for part two i just wrote three paragraphs, one for each bullet.
- thats good. it asks for you to read the excerpt and then respond to three things specifically. when given such instructions, the important thing is that you respond directly to the questions or prompts given. whether you do it in separate paragraphs or in an essay is up to you. which is why there are no specific word-limits identified for part two. sk
thank you!
- I started alphabetizing the personal pages 'cuz it was bothering me, but it's taking too long to finish. DS
- You could use excel, I'm pretty sure you can just copy and paste the names in. If the fisrt, last names don't go into seperate columns, you may have to import the text as space delimited. Then highlight both columns and go to Data>sort. Choose column B for a last name sort. Try I out. Excel is a good tool to know! david bucciero
- Where do we post these assignments? On our Personal Pages?
- which assignments? if you are talking about the dated assignments, like assignment 08.25, you post them on your reading summary page. you access your reading summary page from the official class list. we went over this in class. and the assignment 08.25 post says this clearly as well
To alphabatize it, how about everyone just stick their name where it is in alphabetical order.
But by first or last name? Ah, there's the question...
i am tired of recieving emails alerting me that cooldaze has changed every day. how do i make it stop?
you need to be more specific. what emails are you talking about? you are alerted about changes to which page on cooldaze? sk
08.25
Facta non Verba
Alphabetizing by first name is just dumb.
assignment 08.25 deadline is approaching.
Assignment 08.25 deadline 6 hours to go!!!
Reminder, please wear deodorant when you go workout at CRC...it makes us workers ALOT happier.
A LOT is TWO WORDS
Ya'll like how the whole system decided to shut down while I was doing my homework, dontcha?
[pet peeve]The apostrophe in "y'all" takes the place of the "ou" in "you." Y'all y'all y'all y'all.... [/pet peeve]
I'm not really southern anyway...cough cough. So YOU ALL like how the system got all forked up, eh?
A dog walked into a bar and asked the bartender if he knew where he could find a job. The bartender told him to check with the circus. Then the dog asked, "Why would the circus need a typist?" hahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahah
That joke was not funny at all.....
OK so whoever has the ability to edit the assignments page: under part two of the assignment due tonight, third bullet- American is spelled wrong— FIX IT it annoys me
Yeah, really...deodorant before 1060 is a very good idea - some toothpaste too. In your mouth that is, but maybe under your arms as well.
Allright allright, if it'll make y'all happy, I'll where deodorant to class. Geez you guys are picky. :)
you mean you'll wear deoderant? wow, good job.
Man, as soon as I caught that mistake and went back to this page you just had to put that up. Haha, oh well, at least I didn't mispell deodorant.
Who misspells deodorant? and it's not mispell, it's misspell
While we're being picky, "all right" is a two-word phrase.
haha! we got you twice! someone get his/her shovel out of his/her hands!
BTW alright is one word; allright is not; and all right is ok
come on, what kind of meanie deletes soapbox posts?? it's just not right.
acctually, you deleted mine first
yeah, I was confused for a sec about the alright thing
At least the soapbox is being used for constructive purposes, right? Haha.
i think this has gone long enough, don't you?
Yes, it has gone long enough.
My two cents: Just a reminder we are in college. I would consider all of us to conduct ourselves as grown ups (because as far as I am concerned that is what we are). I would think this soapbox is for humor or "constructive purposes" (hence not correcting people over petty things). It makes it more enjoyable to visit this site when people are helping one another out rather than bashing one another on a consistant basis. :)
I agree. I would like to see more mature posts. Leave the juvenile stuff for your instant messages.
Posts about a smelly person in something called the soapbox is really ironic though. They might not ever touch one. Anyway, college might involve learning about hygiene for some people.
How many dull people does it take to change a light bulb?
One.
hahahahhahahahahahahahhaha
Please, can we do without the "hahahah"s?
No.
hahahahahhahahahahaha
I would like to prompt a question (outside of the bickering going on): Is anyone else finding the 3 anatomical drawings difficult? I have not waited until the last minute to do them, but it seems to be taking me a while. I feel like I am getting no where. Any comments?
Yes, you smell and probably spelled something wrong. Oh, and I guess a 'hahahahahahaha' is in order as well. Hahahahahahaha! Wow, I make myself laugh. Hahahahahahaha!
ok THAT seemed a little bitter.
Let me just say this in defence of the "hahahahahahah": It is a valid rhetorical device similar to sarcasm, another highly valuable tool of speech. Both are criticized for a lack of subtleness, but they serve very valuable purposes: to alert the audience, whether by saying what one actually means, or saying the opposite, that an occurence is overtly out of the ordinary. In the last case of the "hahahaha", it was used to signify the end of a joke whose very nature made it hard to distinguish, unless you are a dull person, or you know one closely. I will admit that the hahaha's after the first joke were just me laughing at my extreme wit. Please, take it easy on my friend, the hahahaha.
The world would not be interesting without humor, but the sarcastic/bitter comments are uncalled for. If someone asks a question the correct response would be one that omits the immature comments.
Any Radiohead fans?
Thom Yorke makes me melt. For me, Radiohead elicits synesthesia... their music becomes a piece of dynamic visual artwork in my mind's eye.
Oui.
now that assignment 08.25 responses have been posted, take a few minutes to read some by your peers, either in your ta group or in your coa 1011 section. during 1060 tomorrow (friday), id like to discuss questions, thoughts and observations that this assignment helped sponsor. sk
assignment 09.01 is up.

I keep getting emails titled "Swiki Page Update (Arief Setiawan)" saying that changes have been made to this page and that I requested emails for whenever that site is updated. I did not sign up for it... and I would like to stop recieving these emails... could someone help me? They are coming from the email address swiki-bugs@cc.gatech.edu.
Same here.
Your TA has set it up so that you get emails notifying you that the TA page has been updated with new information.
I went to his website, hit edit, and deleted my email address from the bottom.... just a suggestion because those things were really annoying.
Has anyone bought any of the reccomended software yet? Im thinking that buying all that is gonna be a little pricey.
Do we even need it yet? I don't think I'd get it until I know when we'd be using it and how often. I think all of the computers in the COA buildings have everything, so that's too convenient for me to justify going out and buying the programs. Check with the IT guys in 359 to verify that. I'm not sure.
you really dont need to buy ANY software packages this year. and next year, i would recommend annual subscriptions at the great deals that the oit folks have worked out/are working out. sk
has anyone figured out how to put your buzzcard # in the system for the building?
I recommend just "borrowing" all of the software... a lot cheaper :).
1101-B3 (Pegah):
On Wednesday, Pegah told us that we needed: a 6x6 perspective, a 12x6 perspective, two tracings, and the summary of chapter 6 "Value". Today, the site says that not two, but three perspective drawings are due... where did this mystery third drawing come from? I am beginning to wonder if I should trust what she says in class at all or whether I should solely depend on the class website. There is obviously a communication problem here.
I'm Ron Burgandy?
How's this one? Why did Helen Keller have purple fingers?
She heard it through the grapevine.
HAHAHA
(HAHAHA's abbreviated due to a certain amount of uncertainty about a.) the logic of the joke, and
b.) its reception by the audience)
I just went to the library site to get the articles on reserve and there are articles there from 8.16. Are we supposed to read those too or just the 9.1 assignment?
- all assigned readings are posted on the assignment page and identified by the date they are due. the library online page has numerous other readings posted that are for reference only. sk
I am glad that this soapbox is being used to its full potential, Ron Burgundy.
please re-read the handout: important information: coa and cfy.
buzzcard information was on there.
in order to gain access to architecture east and west, you need to set up your buzzcard. go to http://www.coa.gatech.edu/computing/kiosk/bldg_acc.htm
fill out the form and click submit once
For those of you who are not me, but just like me, and dying to know the width of the Tech square sidewalk, I just checked. It's about 22 feet from the curb to the building. The red brick part is about 10 ft, the white part is about 9 ft, and the white brick against the buildings makes up the rest. The measurements are approximate. The sidewalk width varied just a tiny bit, and also I found out today in studio my ruler isn't totally accurate-thanks Utrecht)
- r71h167.res: you just got yourself a free lunch in tech square. or at least another more accurate ruler. 22 feet plus is wide. but its what it takes. why do you think they didnt go with a similar sidewalk width for both sides of the street? sk
- because the opposite side of the road is an ugly, overgrown surface parking lot that is begging to be redeveloped by one of us after we graduate.
hey we might just be able to start an entire lecture on this rite on here. yay!
for buzcard access:
go to http://www.coa.gatech.edu/computing/kiosk/bldg_acc.htm
or go to http://www.coa.gatech.edu/computing, then under helpdesk go to security links then click on visit 'this page' link under buzzcard access.
then fill out your info and click once.
doing it this way may minimize any browser problems.
also its best to do it from a computer on campus.
AIA Atlanta is hosting a lecture by Antoine Predock this Wednesday September 1st 7:00pm at Georgia Pacific Auditorium, 133 Peachtree Street NE.

For info on Antoine Predock go to http://www.predock.com/home.html
Bio available on the news and reviews page as well.
Just want to encourage everybody to use your windex after you're done with your desk! dp
- please cover the desktop entirely in newsprint before you work with charcoal for ex 1.4. sk
- that should help as well:-) dp
HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY found the two readings online in the library online reserves for the asignments due 9/1?
yes, I found them. They are there. You'll need to enter your gtg# and password at the prompt to access them. mike d
-I didn't have any trouble either. go here https://www.library.gatech.edu/login-form.php?https://www.library.gatech.edu/cgi-bin/gtonly/resv>krbReason=nocookie log in, and under "browse by college/school" select "college of architecture", and under "search department/course number" , select "COA 1060"
hope that helps. dp
thanks. the original directions included that for professor you put kahn, BUT YOU DONT. there's the differene no one articulated.
- when you get to coa 1060, readings are listed under professor khan and professor ziada. hence the directions.
pay attention... you are putting Kahn as the professor... you need to put Khan... they are two different professors
It's Bredoteau... not Bretodeau
This question is for anyone in Andi Korber's studio class: Are the drawings of the fabric on the wall supposed to be done on our own since we don't have class monday or are we starting on them as a group on wednesday?
exactly how many pages is in the "perspective" paper??? There are only 7 pages online, but it stops in mid sentence...
. . . the chapter goes on but all we wanted you to go over was to midway on page 145, to the end of the section with the heading, 'one-point perspective'. sk
the fabric drawings are supposed to be completed before class on wendesday. i think we are pinning them up right away.
hi
the soapbox is dieing fast...someone give it some cpr.
-in lieu of above...
IS anyone else going to the Predock lecture on Wednesday night? It should be interesting. I'm looking forward to it. If you were at the Richard Meier lecture last fall, I wonder if it will be an event of that magnitude?! . dp

Is anyone in Tues/Thurs D3? What do we do for 1.3c, on her site it says just lay a trace over it and add edges/surfaces. Does that mean add in the brick and lines on the concrete?
After two weeks of studio, does anyone else feel like withdrawing from school altogether? I have no artistic ability whatsoever. My goal is to be in construction management–NOT ARCHITECTURE. What the heck does the ability to draw vanishing points have to do with BC????????? Ahhh, this is going to be a VERY lonnnnnng year.
- I think there are numerous, wonderful aspects of this course with great relevance for the bc student - even beyond those students in the design disciplines. Most significant, from my perspective, is the way in which 1011 develops personal tools for increasing awareness and evaluating aspects of our environment. Your 'toolkit' is in its initial stages at this point in exercise one. But it will grow this semester to include not just different types of drawing and making, but different ways of inquiring about objects and spaces, ways of organizing this information visually, ways of generating alternative ways of seeing, and ways of evaluating options through various filters (to name a few). These tools of seeing, testing, and proposing support many disciplines. A former student, now an economist, tells me he is a better economist because of this course. Did he learn economics in 1011? No. But did he learn how to question, inquire strategically, and develop alternate solutions alone and in community discourse? Indeed he did. The question raised can begin a great discussion within your own studio group. I suggest you float it for others to comment on! ann of the d's
I didn't say that...AH
I really can't believe you just asked that question. I want to go into developement and I can already see the genious in the Arch dept's decision to make everyone go through CFY. Oh yeah did I mention that I am a junior, so if anyone would be pissed off about it it should be me. It's extending my stay at Tech for at least another year but I wouldn't have it any other way. The things I've already learned in 1060 are going to be invaluable in my ability to create a succesful project. You want to be a contractor well, lets see. First of all, as a GC (general contractor) you have a moral obligation to the world around you. The buildings that you construct create more profound changes to the world around us than anything in any other profesion. You have to know how the constrution that you involve yourself in will impact the world around you. As I previously mentioned it is obvious that these are some of the things that we have already learned in 1060. There are numerous other examples but I don't have the time to go into them. Just trust the school; the people that make these decisions know a lot more about this stuff than you do.
Where can I find a banana on campus? I've looked in Britain and the only fruit they had "in stock" were apple, oranges, and peaches. Have not ventured over to Woodruff just yet.
What do you need a banana for???
Hey guys!! Does anyone know how long should be the summary due on wednesday( coa 1060)??
There were plenty of bananas at Brittain the first week of school. BTW, what DO you need a banana for?
THERE WERE BANANNAS THIS MORNING, ASK AROUND ON YOUR FLOOR MAYBE
Ok... I may be getting way ahead of myself, but I was wondering if it would be recommended to keep our digital documentation up to date or if we should do it all at once at the end of the semester. Also, is digital photograph acceptable? Asking because this method would be much more convenient for me. I tried accessing the digital camera information on the digital documentation page, but when I clicked on the link, nothing would happen. Any reccomendations or help is much appreciated.
from the digital documentation page: Using a flatbed scanner for documenting Bristol Drawings will result in higher definition compared to other methods such as a digital photograph. and they told us on the first day that if the instructor isnt satisfied with the quality of your documentation, you'll have to do it again. obviously digital photography is more convenient - FOR ALL OF US - not just you.
guys, an 'underscore' in the soapbox edit box breaks up the text. while this year's soapbox can go on forever on the right side of the page, its best to break up the text.
you can always read the conversation in view mode.
anyone here into photography? if so, brag about your camera! i have a nikon n75 and love it. anyone have a digital slr by chance?
homework 1.4b says we can use artifical lighting when drawing the fruit. it lists a torch as a possibility. do you think they would allow one of those in the dorms?
- I hope your joking, but if you're not, I'm sorry to be the one who has to crush your dreams. GT does not allow any open flames inside the building. Just think of the fire hazard a torch would create.
I have a Canon Digital Rebel. It is really nice. I had a bunch of lenses from my old film Rebel, and they all work on the Digital. Saved me fat stacks of cash.
thats awesome...how many megapixels does the rebel have?
how long does the summary have to be? because i feel like im writing a novel.
how can that be? did you read the summary instructions? heres the structure again: follow it and its no longer than 300 words or so, with each phrase followed by a couple of sentences.
- In this article, the author takes on/focuses on
- She does this by reviewing, contrasting, opposing, pairing
- She begins by/first she
- Next she
- She ends with
- Some of the important terms etc. are (list the most important and define them)
i answered each of those, i think i just went into too much description.
how many words did it add up to?
what you should do is reread what you wrote and ask yourself how you could condense it? its not about description but distilation. by questioning what you wrote in order to identify what is absolutely crucial, at the heart of the article and the argument, you should be able to come within 300 words or so.
i have 1,100...so i went way overboard
this soapbox is so distracting, everytime I come on to do my homework, I just sit and scroll through the soapbox page.
I second that thought!!!
so is this 300 words per article, so a total of approx 900 words???
edit: nevermind... i actually read the instructions carefully...
- great romanek hotspot over there. beautiful!
Are we really required to follow the writing algorithm precisely? I feel as though my writing style will be cramped if i have to confine myself to such a limited context.
Also... I already read all three of the articles and the ideas are melding together in my head.
I'm Ron Burgandy?
Go eat yourself San Diego.
P.S.- Digo is hot!!
grrr! I just finished writing my webx post for English and now I have to write these summaries! (sniff) I'm sleepy :-(
I feel so lost as to what to write for the summary. I've read it twice and I still don't have one distinct thing that I can say she is talkin about
- Yeah, he's pretty hot. But I think these three fruit/vegetable drawings are going to take forever!
Does anyone know how long this summary needs to be?
I think someone said it had to be around 300 words.
Thats not too bad. Thanks
Does anyone know where to find the reading for studio-Chapter 6 on Value?
- I'm not sure if its on-line, but there was a stack of hard copies in the studio yesterday - on the table in the corner by the windows.
- its not on-line because the tones dont scan well. your instructors were to hand out copies, one per locker, to all of you. they are in a stack on the table in the far right corner.
Does anyone know where the GRADES folder with the COA 1060 course folder is to look up our grades on the spread sheet?
- you will be able to look up grades for your summaries after labor day weekend. sk
Does anyone know pegah zamani's office hours and where her office is? thanks!
I can't figure out what her office hours are, but her office is in Arch. West rm. 366
I absolutely loved my fruit drawings, but my Instructor didn't. Like I thought she would really really like them, but she REALLY didn't. anyone in the same boat?
THANKS!! Now does anyone know WHEN pegah's office hours are?
How do you know she didn't like them? What did she say about them?
she said they were very wrong and very unrealistic, but like honestly, they were good and as true to what i saw as I could get them to be, which doesn't make them sound very good but everyone else i showed them to thought they were really good.
Does anyone know if we have studio the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving break?
- I wrote down that we do not have lecture or studio the Wednesday before Thanksgiving but we will have homework and projects due the Monday we return. You might want to check with your teacher just to be sure though.
- someone deleted stuff in the soapbox - how do we get it back?
go to the history of the page
there is no coa 1060 class or AFTERNOON 3-6 studios on the wednesday before thanksgiving. MORNING studios are at the discretion of the studio instructor. when you come back that sunday, you will head into the final week of classes which is when studio reviews are held. so it will be a busy week. sk
What dummy waited until 10:30 tonight to start this 1060 work? ME! how long does it take?
not that long.
I want DIGO's babies!!
Who's Digo?
By the look of the number of people who still haven't posted the assignment, we may just crash the site tonight.
Is anyone else finding the lectures really interesting? Maybe im just weird.
Yep, you're just weird...
No, I enjoy the lectures too, especially the part where I learned that Atlanta has a place called the Cheesecake Factory. Fascinating. But I seriously do find the lectures interesting.
when we define the terms for the 1060 assignment, do we make them up or can we use a dictionary?
- the terms/constructs etc. that you list are those that the author introduces and uses in her article. when you "list and define" them, you are NOT making them up but summarizing them. for example the author may have introduced a term/construct/concept and made use of it in her argument in a number of different places in the article. your job would be to identify the concept and describe it as succinctly as possible, in the terms the author intended. by way of example: professor allen in his lecture for coa 1060 today developed the notion of 'dimension', network of dimensions, hierarchy of dimension, etc. clearly his argument centered on a particular understanding of the way dimension plays a role in the way cities develop. if you were summarizing his lecture and were asked to identify and define certain operative terms/concepts/constructs in his lecture, you would have to define 'dimension' in the way he developed it, not its dictionary definition. hope this helps. sk
Is anyone else having trouble activating their buzzcard to be able to have access to the architecture building?
first off... people do know that the "cheesecake factory" is a restaurant right? im hoping U guys do know that. second off... i do enjoy learning about atlanta too even though i've lived here for 5 years i'm still learning new things. BUT i do feel sorry for all of U who don't live in or around metro-ATL to know the streets, cities, and popular places around here.. in lecture it seems like you're just supposed to know it. and i know some people who are like... "what? that was a county? i thought it was a street" .. ehh good luck to all of you "out of town"ers
cheesecake factory is actually a chain - they have them in most larger american cities.
Has anyone here been to the Cheesecake Factory? What's it like? (and please don't just say, "They have cheesecake.")
Well, besides having many flavors of cheescake, they have a lot of good selections in food, from seafood to burgers and salads. It can get expensive though, so save a trip there for when you're willing to spend.
I'm finding the lectures very interesting. I must going nuts, by I read them twice, I know, nerd, weird.... I going crazy
I have to say I've been enjoying the lectures too. Having lived in different spots around Atl for the last 4 years, it's interesting to learn how it grew into its current layout, and how it might be improved for the good of everyone. In particular, I think the 'mixed use' idea is fascinating. It could help to solve a great many problems.
If that makes me a nerd, I'm ok with that. Secure in my nerdiness.
- you are in college now. its ok to use your brain and your imagination
S.C.
I'm really suprised to hear that many of you have never heard about the Cheesecake Factory. I'm willing to set up a trip if some of you want to go.
That would be great. While we are there we could discuss the urban and social fabric that supports the cheesecake environment.
Re-defeat George W. Bush in 2004
VOTE KERRY/EDWARDS 2004!!
If you are American and believe in protecting our country, I suggest you vote BUSH for 4 more years.
How can you honestly vote for a president who lied to us about his reasons for going to war? His lies have led to ~1000 DEAD AMERICANS and thousands of other dead Iraqis.
VOTE KERRY/EDWARDS 2004!
Yeah that's right vote for Kerry and kill innocent babies instead.
Hey, everyone is entitled their own political opinion. Just don’t be offensive about it.
GO W! Vote George W. Bush in 2004. The only man I trust with my future and America's futrue.
Tsk tsk. Children...neither one is a good candidate. Is it any better to vote for the one that is the "less bad option" of the two? One day maybe America can vote in an independent. That is the only solution to these party politics. Heck, the president doesn't do much anyway. All of the thousands of advisors do the work. Bush and Kerry are just faces for politcal agendas. Personally, I think a "no confidence" vote is in order for these two. Maybe this is why Americans just don't vote. (why don't we just get a black, woman president...we are to closed minded).
NOT VOTING is the most irresponsible thing in a democracy. you owe to yourself and to your country to INFORM yourself. dont just go on hearsay. dont blame the politicians for the apathy. no one is stopping Americans from voting, from participating in governing.
I felt the need to change the subject and a drop a line right here.
So, this is what my voice looks like in a yellow box...
Is this that yellow submarine I've been looking for???
Correct! We all live in a yellow submarine.
for the assignment on 9.06, do we have to write two seperate summaries or just combine both the readings into one?
- yes, two separate summaries. each article takes on a totally different issue. sk
Why do we have sooo much hw due on a weekend that a lot of people would like to go out of town & it's the first football game?
grrrr
I totally agree. grrrr.
Why do we have so much homework?? Because the College of Architecture seems to think they are the only thing in our life. Hey, they know it's a holiday weekend, that means it is their chance to be twice as evil. I know the teachers know studio and 1060 are not our only classes...but they sure act like they are. None of my other classes make me sit there for NINE HOURS A WEEK, then give me ten hours of homework each week. Maybe one day the college will get off its high horse...but for now they know they have 283 freshmen trapped in their courses. Way to go COA!!!!
Hey you know what? WELCOME TO COLLEGE, we're all going to have to get used to it.
Just wait for Midterms!!! When all 5 classes have tests that count for 20% of your grade in the same week!!!!!!!!
As the other guy said, WELCOME TO COLLEGE, and it's going to get harder and harder form now on. I've heard from other people that students from other majors barely know people from the College of Arquitecture, because they are always busy making projects. BE READY.
I'm a second year that transferred over to CoA this year, and I would argue that even this stuff is a little easier now that I am settled into the college environment and have my time management down. Stop to think about what's going on with these demands on your time every once and a while, and you'll figure out how to make it work.
So many remarks about the work load through the CoA that i just had to add one. I think that you really find out if you should be an arch, bc,or id major through all the studio time. Its a great way to get rid of those not 100% about their career choice.
I don't think it is so much the studio time that is going to get rid of so many, but the stress of taking 16hrs. After all that is what we were advised to do.
Here's a little advice from a 3rd year. Studio isn't too bad. It's a lot of work, I will admit, even I have problems finishing it, and I only have 12 hours of classes. The COA doesn’t think it's the only thing in our lives, that's just an easy way to think of it when you feel bogged down by homework. The trick is to find balance in your studies. Tech is an easy place to get overwhelmed at, and that’s because your work seems to be this insurmountable obstacle. Give it some time, and you'll find a balance between work and play, and trust me, things get better then. I'd strongly suggest going to the football games. They're a lot of fun, and really exciting, even if you aren't a fan of the sport. Take time out to hang with friends. You may have to stay up late because of it, but the loss of a few hours of sleep can be easily be made up. Just remember that only part of the college education lies in your classes. I know this sounds like a lot of crap, but all of the upperclassmen here will tell you the same thing. I hope this helps, and I’m sorry if I sound like a rambling old fool.
thank you for your wisdom.
Anyone in ARCH 2111 able to tell me where the printable campus map can be found? I had no luck on the course reserves under Dowling or Hobson.
Well it can easily be ascertained from Tech Tower or around there. Just get a campus map and it has all the buildings plus a scale. Then you don't have to worry about printing it out, plus the maps are big.
I got my map from the Arch library. Just ask someone that works there for one and they will let you make a copy.
aren't these two essay summaries due tomorrow night by midnight? everyone is saying they're due tonight, but it says 9/06/04 not the 5th.
The assignment page says 9.06. I would go by that.
For whoever was needing the map for 2111, did you get it? I'm only thinking about this because it's the holiday & I'm worried you didn't. I don't think anyone knew that they decided not to include scales with this year's maps when they assigned this project. It's been very frustrating. I can help you with it because I just finished the assignment myself, but it will take some digging & if you don't need the help, I would have done it for nothing. Please post if you still need help!! :)
I'm good now, thanks.
I personally think that all this complaining about Studio is unwanranted. I am a third year in CFY right now and I personally have never had so much fun in the past doing work at Tech. I was a physics major for two years... try taking Quantum Mechanics and Thermal Physics in addition to Abstract Vector Spaces (3000 level proof based Math class) and then you will know what really working your ass off at Tech is like.
damn straight. i dont know how you guys could be complaining about studio work. or the lectures for that matter. i love all our architecture classes. they are so cool and fun. all of u who r complaining about the work load u had better get used to it because this is nothing right now. just wait until we really get to working in or selective majors. then well all be pulling all nighters and wishing that we were back in 1st year studio. savor these classes.
Come on guys, be nice to the newbies. They not only have to deal with a larger work load than they're used to, they also have to deal with living away from home (many of them being away longer than they have ever been before) The first semester here is always the worst because there's so much you have to adapt to.
dude im from the west coast and i agree with the guys who spoke earlier. these classes are awesome. just enjoy all of this new stuff. its great.
i appreciate the airing that these issues are getting. may be its time to repeat some of the things we discussed during faset.
first: college is tough, especially an excellent one like tech. dont think of it as if its high school without curfew. if you want the prestige that comes with going to college with the some of the best and the brightest, then youve got to earn it.
second: transition into college is tough. and we all understand that. i mentioned to your parents that the 16-credit hours recommended for fall were not writ in stone. that if anyone of you felt overwhelmed by the demands of all the courses, it was ok to drop one. no one should feel like a failure if they do so. if any of you wish to talk to me about how you are coping with all the courses and what you might do about it, please feel free to set up an appointment.
third: time management is crucial. as some of the other posts here have said, in the beginning it may feel overwhelming. but once you get a sense of what the demands are, its important that you begin to set up a schedule for doing the work in all your courses. dont wast time; make every moment count.
fourth: studio is never done. you could always do more. in order that this doesnt get out of control, its important that you arrange your schedule to work on studio on a regular basis. set aside a few hours EVERY DAY to do your work. dont leave everything to the last minute (all-nighters are ok ocassionally but are unhealthy on a regular basis). when you do, plan on more than ten hours a week outside class. while there is no magic formula, i can tell you, as you yourselves should be able to tell by now, that ten hours isnt going to be enough to give the work the quality of craft, the intensity of effort, and the clarity of thought it deserves.
fifth: finding the right amount of hours required is a matter of trial and error. the number of hours will also vary with each exercise. and as you get more comfortable with the kind of work studio requires of you, it will feel easier. in the beginning, if you find that the number of hours youve set aside are not enough, add a few more hours and see if that works. if you find that you are working just as hard as you can and still not getting your work done, discuss it with your studio instructor. im sure she/he can give you advice on how to work better, smarter. feel free to talk to me as well.
sixth: no one is out to get you. no one is evil. none of you are trapped in the coa. i dont think its healthy for gatech undergraduates to blame their troubles on something mythical like gatech's 'shaft culture'. certainly within the coa no one is out to shaft you. we know you, we know your names, we know how hard you work, and all of us are available to help and advise you. sk
respeck Sabir...keep it real
Does you fink dat Iraq had BLTs

i feel like i am the only mac user in this whole school. i don't know much about computers, but i really like my mac! anybody else out there? i feel so stranded! help!
I use a Mac and I love it. I know a few others, cfy students as well. I don't know much about computers either, and up until now I've mainly been a pc user. but macs are pretty bling.
awesome! at least there's somebody else out there. macs are very bling, they're cool and easy to use, and mine hasnt crashed or anything yet. thanks :)
ahhh, got the summaries done, but they took too long. going to have to get faster at these!
Do we have to do both reading summaries or just the first one?
- i think this was mentioned above, but we have to do an individual summary for each article. 2 total. that's also what it says in the reading assingments page, i think.
i did want to add a comment to the post about getting faster at homework assignments...I'm in the same boat. i usually feel satisfied with the result, but then i realize i spent more time on it than i meant to or should have. i definitely have to learn how to work more efficiently and expediently. i guess it's a process you learn over time, of course with extra effort on my part to get there. but right now, "there" is a long way away...david p.
appreciate your attitude david. you will get faster with the 1060 homework; it takes practice. same with 1011 except doing that fast may muck it up. the important thing is to approach each assignment carefully, understand the task or brief at hand, and then give it your best. and to all of you mac users, i wouldnt exchange mine for all the pcs in the coa! sk
Is anybody else having trouble trying to show texture and value using black ink pens? I have been working on those nine texture drawings for hours now and just can't seem to get the hang of sketching with a pen! Any helpful suggestions???
you might try spending a focused 20 minutes making a four-stage ink grey scale (similar to that of your charcoal), for starters. this time, though, experiment with adjacent lines, cross hatching, scribbling, and any other method to get the greys to read. stand back about 3 feet or so to discover your successes. now you know you can make grey! then try to see at least those four greys in the texture at hand. draw then, with the same method as the drape - greys (now lines) in shapes. you might just surprise yourself with the result! ann of the d's
Thanks for your suggestion! I will attempt that...although I was not too great with the charcoal grayscales either!!! I would be the best at these sketches if we could use those 96-count Big Boxes of Crayola Crayons–there were so many shades of gray in those!!?? :)
where do we find our grades for the summaries?
- they said they'd post them on a separate "Grades" page after labor day- dp
thanks
If the TA makes notes about your summary are you supposed to go back and fix it and if you do will it be re-graded?
I've been wondering the same thing, was just about to ask that question too.-md
This is more related to the earlier comment about summaries... I have found that although it seems like extra work, it helps me to take good notes as I read. I don't usually have to go back and read it again when I'm writing the summary, and after writing a few I've learned how to pick out what I would use in my summary; writing then becomes just fleshing out my notes. Pretty simple... but yeah I definately feel you, it takes forever to read them sometimes!!! I hope that helps, though you've probably already thought of that... oh well. Much love. :) -Ashley M
Happy birthday 20 me!
~Happy birthday!
who needs extreme sports?
posting your summaries at the absolute last minute is enough of an adrenaline rush!
my heart is beating like a racehorse!
wow the content of this soapbox sure has gotten.... interesting.
- Happy Birthday dude...or gal!!
- Happy Birthday indeed!
BTW- Are we allowed to remove some of the REALLY old posts up at the very top of the soap box page? Not that we need to, but it'd be nice to not have to scroll this far down to read the bottom.
is anyone elese still working on their swatches??
Ha, how about: who is planning on finishing them up tomorrow?
I have class at 8:30am!!!!
Oh, jeez. mine isn't until 1:30
Procrastination seems to be a poor choice in stuido!
but of course...
I can't even get into the couch building if i wanted to at this time of night...
I'm not to great at this swatch creating thing...
so... who else wants to hope there's no class due to severe weather???
well, we can hope..but i still think we're going to class today
So many other school and college closing... but not us
In all honesty, when's the last time you heard of school being called off because of rain? I know this is supposed to be a LOT of rain, but since we aren't in any sort of flood zone, we don't have much to worry about. Just don't forget your swimsuit and goggles for the day.
Hey!! Does anybody know a senior or fifth or sixth year architecture student that would be willing to have a freshman interview them for a class? This is an assignment for GT 1000 and is already late... so if you know anyone that would be wonderful... Thanks!! email gtg894w if you're interested.
there are no fifth or sixth year arch students, unless some come back after paris to take a class or two. could you interview graduate students? if so, you could start with one of the tas. or just walk into a grad studio tomorrow between 1 and 5. sk
Thanks a billion!!
does anyone know the web site that i can activate my buzzcard for access into the arch building when it is closed?

Are we supposed to watch those specials on GPB? I hadn't heard anything about it until I got an e-mail saying that the times were incorrect. What's the deal?
-I was talking with someone tonight and it appears there were two emails that were sent out...the original and one with the time correction. I too got only the second one. My friend also said something about extra credit if we completed some additional requirements? I think we'd definitely be interested in that. Can anybody fill us in? david p.

My TA told me I need to put wordwrap on my reading summaries page...can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks
The text on any page should automatically text-wrap. If you post a link to your page I can check it out. If you have posted a picture with large dimenstions, your page will be streched to the pixel width of the image, thus extending the boundaries for your text to be displayed within. david bucciero
Is anybody else getting unwanted swiki updates? If so, can we STOP getting them?
- there is a way. go to the page that is being updated. click edit. at the bottom you'll most likely see your email address under "Send e-mail alerts to these addresses upon next save:". remove thyself and click save. if the page is locked, check with the page's author requesting removal. even if you can do it yourself, i'd recommend checking in with the author first - maybe there's a reason she/he wants you to stay informed of each change? check it out. ann
STUDIO IS HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why do you say that?
- ok guys. not to break up the fun. but keep the party within bounds, and within room 200. dont want to hear from the other folks who use the building. sk
- I thought we were supposed to be able to view our grades after this past monday off of the website.
- we'll let you know how in class tomorrow.

To David Bucciero: This is the link to my nontexting-wrapping page... Rachel LaPerre: Reading Summaries Thanks in advance for your help.
Having to draw 36 thumbnails and 6 charcoal pictures, complete reading summaries, and experiment with digital documentation this weekend, I can't help but revisit this question...Does the College of Architecture not realize that we are taking other classes and trying to lead a small, tiny fraction of a social life at the same time we are taking their classes?
amen sista
Studio 200 Rejects - I love y'all like a fat kid loves chocolate.
- who was this? I swear I know you.
Is there a website I go to to log on to my "coa computer network account?"
if you want to learn how to "ftp" onto the COA server and get to your files, go by the COA IT office on the 3rd floor. I think it's posted on their door, or just ask them where to find the step-by-stpe info.
- However, you won't be able to ftp until you have logged in to your account from a computer within the COA and changed your password.
please be careful when editing soapbox. posts keep getting deleted.

- I can't think of anything that would be better to spend my money on. Unfortunately, I've already spent all of my money on studio supplies.
sabir, refresh me please!
harvey newman's article on decatur street and the 1906 race riots that professor keating mentioned in lecture today is on the readings page. sk
sabir would you mind sharing the notes you take in class? O r at least share some of what you thought were the important points in the lecture
Does anyone know how to set up the COA account? I'm lost and do not know where to go or what to do, and I want to access my grades.
this is not an appropriate use of the soapbox. lets be grown ups here. sk
The \\coa.arch.gatech.edu address doesnt work, and i cant find anything on any website that says set up account or login or anything. the system is whack...
You have to set up the COA server on your computer if you are using an outside computer.
To set this up:
Open My Network Places, Add a Network Place, and click Next.
Type in "ftp://ftp.coa.gatech.edu" and click Next.
Uncheck Log on Anonymously, type in your gtid#, and click Next and Finish.
I am not sure why "\\coa.arch.gatech.edu" is not working any more.
Once you set up the server on your computer, "ftp://ftp.coa.gatech.edu" should definitely work.

Sabir-
I have some major concerns regarding the reading material. All of these readings are terribly overwhelming. I'm not worried about staying up to speed and reading them each week, but what exactly are we supposed to be focusing on? When you say we're supposed to know and understand all of this material, does this mean we're supposed to know specifics, facts, dates, people... or should our main objective simply be to understand the overall concept of each article? If indeed we are supposed to know specifics, that is very frightening. Just wanting a bit of clarification, please.
- dont get overwhelmed. the final exam is not about memorizing all the specifics but about the larger ideas, constructs, arguments, terms, deployed in the articles. of course some facts are crucial to arguments. for example, if you are making a point about segregation and referred to brown vs board (but didnt know when it took place or called it green vs board) then your answer wouldnt be as compelling as it could be. we ask for a weekly summary post in order too help you get better at reading strategically; hence the template. the final exam questions will be posted at midterm. you will have from midterm to december 10 to prepare answers to these questions. you will draw upon your lecture notes and your reading summaries to prepare your answers. that is why i suggest that you prepare reading summaries for most or all of the readings as you go along. or you could wait until midterm do start doing the readings. sk
Wow, I didn't realize that I would not sleep for four out of seven days just for studio. I guess that's why the lights are always on in the Architecture building. Thank the lord I'm done with Calculus Physics and etc.
Maybe the person who has stayed up four out of seven nights could work a bit more efficiently? – I'm learning this lesson right now, as I have 270 pages to study for a test on Monday, and I didn't start until Thursday... =(
Sure I think that many of us might have problems with our instructors..however, i do not think that you would want to "slash" your instructor on this site. for one, it is too easy to find out who wrote what, and slashing != better grades
I am so confused as to how to set up my COA account on an outside computer. I mean, really....someone explain this. I was just handed a sheet of paper and I just don't understand.
I tried to type in the password to see my grades, but it wont work! Whats the password when you sign on for the first time?
I thought it was Atlanta1, but I tried it, it didn't work for me
My password used to work, but suddenly it is not working!... Maybe there is some sort of a problem on the server.
Im really confused as to how to get into the coa system. Do you have to be in the architecture building? If not what is that random thing where it tells you to go? \\coa.gatech.edu
When I felt discouraged and frustrated, I went and directly spoke to my instructor in order to get clarification. Even though you have a problem with the instructor, this board was not intended for you to bash people and such. Sometimes when you just go to that person, such that I did, it doesn't necessarily make the situation better, yet you feel a sense of relief because the internal build up of stress can be overwhelming and sometimes it is nice to just let it out. Think before you act and remember that this board was not intended for conversation involving the topic that was brought up. The workload is a lot more than many expected, and more so for some classes than others, yet if you find it overwhelming discuss it with your instructor. Have an awesome weekend and set aside a couple hours out of the day for yourself (architecture work should not be included in this time frame)! :)
I added the above information to the "check your grades" page. myung
Thanks Myung for your help on how to access grades. It is much appreciated!
Ok, maybe this is a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. What is our COA account name and password supposed to be?
- Your COA account name is your gtg number. By default, your password is Atlanta1. To change this password you'll need to log on to one of the public computers in the COA, and then you will be able to "ftp" with the instructions on the check your grades page.
I tried to set up "ftp://ftp.coa.gatech.edu" on my Windows XP computer using the steps described, but when I go to open the ftp address, I get the "This web site cannot be loaded" page. What could be causing this problem?
I have the same operating system and I have the same issue. Help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
For part of the day today, the coa network was down, even within the building. That would have caused the "website cannot be loaded" problem. It seems to be back up now, though. Kristin
I'm in studio right now and its 12 AM on a Saturday Night. This is killing me... lol.
TECH 28, Clemson 24!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy COW!!! That was the best game EVER! GO JACKETS!!!
Oh yeah! You got that right!
TAKE THAT CLEMSON!
Reggie Ball for President
Calvin Johnson is my hero
It is now 4:42am and I am still charcoaling. Anyone else? Who votes that it should be time for bed? Oh wait, I won't get it all done if I go to bed. Hope you all are sleeping well. :)
I'm still up and about to start my 6th charcoal drawing. Band at climpsun tonight was AWESOME!!! For anyone who hasn't heard yet the final outcome was TECH 28, climpsun 24.... tech scored an incredible touchdown in the last minute and a half!!!
It was an absolutely beautiful game. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, and it had all of the people in Glenn running around like maniacs. Anyways, to the important question or problem. I set up the new network place to connect into the coa server from my dorm room, but it refuses to let me on with the use of the default password Atlanta1 mentioned above. Has this default changed over the past day or am I doing something wrong? If no one has an answer to the password issue, could someone tell me when I can go to Room 359A and receive help, preferably times on Sunday. Thank you to anyone who can provide any help on either of these situations.
- You won't be able to log in from outside of the COA network until you change the default password from a computer withinin the COA.
Is it just me, or did the assignmentfor 9-13 change?
I think that there used to be four recommended readings, and now there are five...
They also said that we had to summarize all of them, but now we only do one of the five.
- i did add a reading, the one professor keating referenced about decatur street. i recommend you read and summarize all in preparation for the final exam but you only have to post ONE SUMMARY. sk
I can't get the buzzcard site to work....I think it's personal now....
Cardboard for breakfast, charcoal for lunch, gone crazy by dinner...
I just finished up those 10 charcoal drawings. Yay! Now all I have to do is start on exercise 1.7 and do all my homework for those classes that AREN'T studio. To that person who was up at 4:42 am working on charcoal: Great job. That's some real dedication. I fell asleep around 2:30 am after finishing my 6th drawing. I actually DREAMED about CARDBOARD. I'd almost say it was a nightmare.
Is anyone else finding it extremly difficult to concentrate on this next summary... something about the ghetto and cardboard...something about making the ghetto with cardboard and charcoal...something about drawing the ghetto on cardboard with charcoal.........i'm so mixed up..
...wait, maybe it's drawing on cardboard while in the ghetto....
well choose a different article
If you don't have a sense of humor about you will go crazy :)
it's gonna be some stuff that you gonna see that it's gonna make it hard to smile in the future
For those of you somewhat tuned to the presidential campaigns, or for those of you who want to take a break from slaving away in studio go to http://www.jibjab.com and click on "This Land."
Some weather we are having, eh? When is fall getting here??
- Why did you feel the urge to delete any sort of positive response to the poor soul who just quit out? serious. that was a really crappy thing to do. you didn't jsut remove it from the side, you deleted it all. I'm reposting it below
So guys, it has been a fun ride in studio. I guess I am the first one to have their spirit broken. Guess because I don't understand cardboard or charcoal, I am just not cut out to be a building constructor. I'll leave all the other fine persons who understand these abstract topics to handle your building designs. I never realized how crucial some of these things covered in studio were to a bc major until now. I guess dreams are made to be broken...sigh. Looks like I'll go to some major that can use my talents, not point out my flaws.
- I hope you haven't left yet. I too feel behind in studio, especially since I have had no previous art classes. But when I look back at how much I've learned in the past few weeks, I am amazed to see the progress I have made. I'm sure you've progressed greatly also. You may not be on par with the rest of your class (I sure as hell am not) but chances you've shown signs of improvement, which is what I think they look for here. As for this relating to bc, it doesn't yet. 1060 relates heavily to bc right now, and to be honest, even as an ID I really enjoy 1060. The purpose of CFY studio is to give you an idea of each area of the COA, so while this stuff right now might not be to your liking, the stuff later on will be right up your alley. Also, I know this sounds like bullshit, but if you go through college crusing on your talents, then you haven't really learned anything. Use this time to work on your flaws and make them into strengths. But aside from all that bs, here's a comment that everyone should take to heart here. Nolite te bastardes carborundorum. roughly translated, it means don't let the bastards grind you down. If you do decide to drop, good luck on whatever major you choose. If you don't, drop a line on studio, and I'm sure someone will come to your aid if you need it.
Hey, don't be so down on yourself. Talk to some upperclassmen about BC before you make any decisions.
Whoops, didn't mean to delete it entirely...so as i was saying...it is deathly hot these days. Isn't it fall soon?
In response to the post: So guys, it has been a fun ride in studio. I guess I am the first one to have their spirit broken. - I am also a pre-BC major, and trust me, I have been completely overwhelmed by studio. I, too, don't understand the first thing about showing texture and value with charcoal. However, do remember that you are graded on effort–and not on how "good" your drawings are. My lifelong dream has been to be a general contractor, and I won't let this, for lack of a better term, stupid common first year stand in my way, and you shouldn't either. And besides, if you (or I) are not successful with our attempts in studio, keep in mind that both Southern Polytech and GA Southern offer degrees similar to Building Construction. In the consruction industry, I would bet that the importance is whether or not you have a college education, rather than whether or not you have a GA Tech education.
- I hope you haven't left yet. I too feel behind in studio, especially since I have had no previous art classes. - Hey, don't be so down on yourself. Talk to some upperclassmen about BC before you make any decisions.
Just got back from spending six hours in a studio in the Arch. building working on my charcoal skills which, by the way, are definetly necessary to survive in today's society. I imagine hell will be something like that, but it won't last qutie as long.
- Just a question–what architect, industrial designer, or building construction person uses charcoal drawings in their profession?
I give up. I know the soap box was getting long, so I don't mind that our posts got cut shortly after they were posted, but it still is a little depressing after all that wonderful advice. Check the history if you were the student posting on leaving studio.
I'm another BC major that thinks studio is the worst things ever. I'm considering a transfer as well. On a scale of one to horrible, it is horrendous. But, if you are looking at a transfer at GT, then consider civil engineering with me. I am meeting with the advisor for the major tomorrow. They have a degree that specializes in construction engineering and management. I also saw on the internet that BC offers certificates...so bingo! Be a civil engineer with a concentration in construction and a BC certificate. Good to go, and not even fully qualified with charcoal.
Where did you learn about the Civil Engineering degree that specializes in construction engineering and management? Sounds like a better alternative to me than charcoal and transfering to Southern Polytech!
Yes, the bandwagon is filling up. Looks like there will be a small BC class come 2008. I found it on the general catalog sight...under civil engineering. http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/programs/coe/civil.php#civilemajor When you read it is says:"The four-year curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (B.S.C.E.) enables the graduate to enter professional practice as an engineer or to continue his or her studies in programs leading to advanced degrees in the following broad fields of specialization: construction engineering and management..." and the GC also says that there are BC certificates. I have not validated this information yet. But i do know from upperclassmen who are CE majors that const management is available in there. You don't have to look very far from the COA for a decent alternative.
Is there anyone out there that has English 1101 - Worthington? I am in DESPERATE need for the log-in ID and password for turnitin.com. I have an assignment due tomorrow morning and the id and password have completely dissapeared. I'm in the 10:05 class if that makes a difference. Post it on here or e-mail it to me, gtg918x@mail.gatech.edu
You guys are being a bit quick to bail; we are just about to start drafting work. I'd think it would be important to know how that kind of stuff works if you're doing BC.
If Atlanta is a city without a soul, would it be interested in buying mine?
- 09.13 summary is due. but there is no summary due 09.19. sk
Sheesh, who would have thought that a little carbon and cardboard would be all it took to chase someone from their dreams. To any BC person considering dropping studio and leaving the major entirely: why not wait until you receive your interim progress report? It will be S or U, satisfactory or unsatisfactory, and it comes out well before the drop deadline of Oct 8th. You may not be doing as badly as you seem to think you are. Studio requires your acceptance of some criticism, and even frequent criticism does not mean you are a lost cause. You might not get the A you want but if you put in earnest effort you will not fail. This may be hard to believe for all of you who sailed through the standard testing hoops of High School, but studio is not something that you are expected or even should want to get right effortlessly.

Hey–you guys been spying on me???
alrighty folks, big announcement here. the lecture discussions page has finally been set up. you can now post any comments, thoughts, remarks, feelings, ideas, and converse, chat, confer, discourse, discuss, debate, and question...uh, the online thesaurus is running out of words here... and question you have in response to any of the lectures. here's how it works. on cool, click the "lecture discussions" link, read the introduction, click on the appropriate discussion page, and enter your post.
the graduate teaching assistants will be helping administer the page, so if you want expert answers to questions you're too nervous to ask in front of 200 of your classmates ;) as well answer some on your own, that's the place and now's the time. dp
two things folks.
first: i would like to reiterate what a number of posts have said: its too early to 'bail'. there are many things that the cfy curriculum will introduce you to. some will come more naturally to you than others, all will extend your ability to think through and engage the designed and built environment. if you would like to talk it through, speak to your instructor. or to me.
second: id like to thank david parker for taking the initiative to start and monitor a student discussion page. and i would like to encourage you to visit it and post to it a few times each week. i think the discussion would help you clarify ideas/concepts introduced in the lectures. please remember tho: it is not a vent space about the lecture content or the lecturer. thanks. sk
what web site do we go to get wireless internet access in the arch building?
No...but...Gavin Johns is soooo cute, and sweet :)
grading question - i thought that the summaries, etc. were supposed to be graded as A, B, or C. what's the deal with the 1-4?
it's explained a little bit further on the summaries instructions page
I'm Ron Burgandy?
Sabir, maybe you think it is too early to bail, but listen to me....we are not all gung-ho arch majors. BC students struggle mightily with studio nonsense. You have already run a few off and who knows who will be next. My guess is that you run all the BC majors off, then the architects become BC majors because they hate studio. Time to change the system a little. when people are scared off from your college, it is time to re-examine the situation. Maybe you want to weed people off, but students would say that is a bad idea. Gracias.
- That is an interesting theory–however we won't find out whether or not it is credible for a few more weeks. I would bet that although we BC majors are not the greatest at studio, we are all doing better than we think we are. Right now, a week or so from September 20-21st is judgment day. Why don't we stop complaining about studio until then when we get our first grade? Besides, if we end up getting a passing grade on Exercise 1 (which I'm sure we all will if we put a little bit of effort into it), who knows what Exercise 2 or 3 might bring our way...maybe something we'll use along the way in our construction careers...
- I think you are right on. I am a BC major in Jason Snyders class and find it impossible to understand this stuff. I work on it, but when I am done it just looks like crap. I am embarassed every time we post because the ID and ARCH majors look so much better than mine. I am going to fail, end up at perimeter, and go no where in life. I think its time to go management!
What is the matter with you guys. All you do is whine. You freshman really think that you know it all don't you. I am a BC major as well and although studio may not be the most applicable class in the world it is interesting and fun. Studio students are the most sociable group in the entire University. I suggest that you start looking at the bright side instead of constantly critizing our Profesors. At lease when you are working your ass off (which you have to do in other colleges too by the way) you are in a room with a dozen other fun people instead of locked away in a closet solving diferential equations.
- And please don't feel embarassed about posting next to ID and ARCH majors...I want to be an ID major and sadly my drawings always look crappy against a lot of others. I don't know how to draw, but I knew that I was getting myself into a lot of it, so I'm willing to learn and try my hardest. Remember, what we're doing at the moment might not be your strongest, but there should be something eventually that you may take interest in, and if not, hey you made some pretty wall(or toilet)paper.
- good point. i don't think the purpose of a college education is simply to learn and know only about the tiny window of what you want to do with your life. it should be about knowing and understanding a little bit about everything, that's why they have core curriculum, as well as learning about your career. knowing and understanding how architects or Industrial designers think and work is going to help you greatly in the long run, because those are the people who are going to surround you and work with you all your life. bc's don't just work with bc's. so you've done stuff you don't think is related at all to bc for 6 weeks. that's alright. you've got 3, 4, or in some cases 5, more years for your to learn adn study about bc. compared to that, 6 weeks learning about what you think is only applicable to architects is not such a big deal, especially when it's simply part of a complete education. CFY is just the core curriculum for arch, bc, and id.
yeah, you freshman really need to stop whining and suck it up. get used to the "real world", not the glazed over world of high school... haha. i'm a sophomore, and although tech was difficult the first semester, you become tough and work your way through it. nobody gets ANYWHERE by giving up.
Come on guys... CFY drawings are not about skill. They're about observing... about thinking. Have RESPECT for your work.
If you guys think that a 4 1/2 hour art class is hard, then maybe you should be down the road at Southern Poly Tech studying how not to suck.
W
W in '04! Take the path that will protect America, not the one that will doom it.
When are we supposed to have all of our work documented on a disk for 1011?
This has nothing to do with school at all, but I'm really worried about my girlfriend and family in New Orleans right now. So, I was wondering, if anyone has the time, could they possibly pray for them and everyone else in that area?
I'll keep them in my prayers, my Grandparents live there also.
Maybe these hurricanes are Nature's response to George W. Bush's environmental policy.
[insert deity] works in mysterious ways.
Good grief. I’m proud of our country, and I’m glad we have a president with a back bone.
Hey! Let's not talk about politics! Lets just be thankful if class is cancelled thursday. It wouldn't really help me as I only have one class that day and it isn't studio :-)
i have never understood how george w. bush even got elected. wait, he didn't!
his environmental policy is horrible. why is it that everyone thinks he's such a good president? he's horrible! let's get a president that is intelligent, honest, one that doesn't wear religion on his/her sleeve, one that isn't homophobic, and one that does what's RIGHT and not what is PROFITABLE.
does anyone know how to check their grades..Ive changed my password already and everything and I followed the directions on how to set up a new network on my computer, but it keeps giving me an error message???
or maybe it's that we finally have a president with some convictions and that scares the crap out of most of the country. it's not so much that he's wearing his religion on his sleeve that bothers you, it's that his religion is the one that's always picked out as the most non-pc because they're not ridiculously tolerant of everyone and everything. let the man have his faith. be thankful that he's not trying to force it on you.
I find it interesting that we make any given president or candidate the scape-goat for America and the World's problems. How many of us have sacrificed one single thing for the betterment of the world? How many of us have given of our time or precious money to aid those in Iraq, the Sudan, Jamaica, Cuba, Afganistan, ect. etc. etc. The problems with this nation are not the fault of the presidents we elect or fail to elect. They are my fault, and yours. The president is not the problem, we the people are. And if we want to change things, maybe we need to quit depending on a candidate, and take some personal responsibility.
- I thought we did by voting for a president and legislature and paying taxes, some of which may or may not go toward aid. The president should be representative of Americans' general sentiments and, incidentally, a scapegoat if there is something faulty about them.
RESIDENT EVIL 2 IS AWESOME!!
wow, I just checked my grades at home.
I would like to remind everyone about studio ZEN! The desks are in terrible shape! I went to use one in class and it was covered in charcoal dust! It only takes a min. to tidy up your desk people!
This is for all of the people feeling conflict over who to pick for President...
We're All Americans....
Democrats & Republicans solidarity!
There are less than three months until the election, an election that will decide the next President of the United States.
The man elected will be the president of ALL Americans, not just the Democrats or the Republicans. To show our solidarity as Americans, let's all get together and show each other our support for the candidate of our choice. It's time that we all came together, Democrats and Republicans alike.
If you support the policies and character of President George W. Bush, please drive with your headlights 'ON' during the day.
If you support John Kerry please drive with your headlights OFF at night.
If you're a freshman and don't have a car...
OKAY, no if you’re a freshman…they have absentee voting where they just mail you your ballot.
So, how do you sign up for absentee ballot? I'll need to do that.
I'll tell you if you'll vote for Kerry...
i'll give you a ride myself if you'll vote for kerry!
george w. bush has serious issues. how can a president have so little care for the environment, wish to push his religion onto every american, and (what upsets me the most) deny every american (regardless of sexual orientation) the right to marry. i believe that his ultraconservative policies are simply not fit for a progressive world today. come on... lets stop living in the 1800s and start living in the world TODAY.
For the person who is willing to give a free ride to vote for Kerry: Are you that desperate to give a freshie a ride just so Kerry can get 2 votes in the state of Georgia? Come on now! George W. Bush is going to bring it this coming November. And for all you tree huggers who say Bush cares so little about the environment, drop your major and pick Biology and see if you all can change the world together. Please! And since when did we become so progressive? What happened to the values that we all used to grow up with where sex and profanity would never be seen on TV. Its you liberals who try to stretch and "interpret" our bill of rights to allow no decency in society. No one should have to be penalized by taxes for people who make an honest living and expect to keep what they earn. Not have to shell out money that could go to feeding their own children but instead to people who made the wrong decisions in there own life. Down with the Johns! W in 04!
Someone needs a nap. Not that I disagree.
Can we just all agree that talking about politics never really solves anything? no one is going to change their opinion and everyone just gets really upset. It's quite annoying.
It's called the soapbox moron...what did you expect?
- I just wonder why we continue to follow this same political structure if year after year we have nothing but name calling and mudslinging from every party. It just seems pointless
Are there any 4th year/grad Arch kids out there willing to help a me out by doing a short interview about the major? Wont take more than 10 minutes of your day. I'd appreciate the help! Let me know at gtg820x@mail.gatech.edu thank you so much.
Okay for the person that wanted to know about absentee voting: on your voter registration card (which you should have received after registering to vote) you should find a phone number (or some form of contact information) for the precint you live in. If you call the number or visit the web site you can sign up for absentee voting. (oh yeah and just to let you know I'm not going to force my political views on you just because I gave you this information...vote for whoever the heck you want...after all this is America!)
THANKS!
Feel free to run me over with your car, idiot. I'm still supporting Kerry.
I'm not into name-calling, but that's just plain cruel to say to someone based on political beliefs. You vote for Bush, I'll vote for Kerry. We'll see what happens.
Libertarianism anyone?
Liberals can have their righteous rage over the environment; I'll settle for Bush's huge lead in the poles.
- That almost made sense. You think liberalism is all about environmentalism, which you think is extreme but don't mind, and like to be able to say you're part of the winning team? Leading the poles is the decisive factor in who you choose though you talk about liberals as if you are not one, unless I am misunderstanding.
clarification: by poles, you mean... metal tubes? axis of the earth? the Polish?
perhaps the word you seek is poll... different spelling, different meaning
Dem edecated librals is just too smart for us po' white folk, or do they simply take solace in the fact that, although they have no chance of having a sympathizing president for another four years, they can still make a big deal out of 2 A.M. spelling errors?
Are there any 4th year/grad Arch kids out there willing to help a me out by doing a short interview about the major? Wont take more than 10 minutes of your day. I'd appreciate the help! Let me know at gtg820x@mail.gatech.edu thank you so much.

- blame canada. but at least i learned something from professor allen's lecture (as did you!). but please dont sign your messages with a FAKE 'SK' please. i want to be able to sign messages without fear of identity theft. thanks. sk
Some of you people over in Couch are real jerks with respect to cleanliness. Burning a table was a nice touch.
- And hate to break it to you, but charcoal just doesn't magically clean itself up either.
- yeah i know, if it stays on there longer than the time you work there, it ain't comin back up. windex doesn't even get it...I want a refund!! -dp
- You're right. The windex never works. I can't get that streak-free shine like the windex bottle promises. Why, Sabir please tell me, why?
- Come now, I don't think the burn marks were intentional. I am guessing it happened as people were using the clip lights for their charcoals over the weekend. Be charitable. However, one always should try to leave a clean workspace when using charcoal.
lecture 2 is up on the discussion page... lecture discussions
the soapbox rox my sox!
I HEART CHARCOAL!!
on a scale of one to fabulous, charcoal is scrumpulescent!!!
Sometimes, I like to get naked and rub charcoal all over my chest...even draw a still-life on there if studio has me really hot. One time, thinking about texture got me really excited when I had charcoal all over me, so I rolled around on some sheets of paper for a body-texture study. Corregated cardboard really turns me on too.
Nice.
some people are really twisted and demented in their writings
...e s200
So will studio be cancelled tomorrow if the weather is bad?
I hope not.
This weather sort of sucks for those of us that were drawing exterior spaces.
Why not hope its closed?
man, i didn't think it was supposed to hit until the weekend. i just got out of the IC, and i didn't even dare to move with an umbrella. horizontal rain really makes my day :( -dp
It really sucks when your walking back from studio and your umbrella breaks!!!
At least you didn't lock yourself out of your dorm room!!!
Those of you complaining about the weather haven't taken the time out to throw on a bathing suit and go outside to fool around. You should see the burger bowl. There were at least 20 people there playing games in the rain. it was fun.
I DIDN'T HAVE A BATHING SUIT!!! I WAS LOCKED OUT OF MY DORM!!! ='(
Should have gone skinny dipping, I did!!! :)
hope classes will be canceled tomorrow
I don't like the rain...
cancel studio??? What the heck will I do from 9am-1pm!?
- don't worry - the architecture building is open 24/7
- thank god for the architecture building -dp
you guys are so entertaining...i love just reading the posts
my english class was cancelled!!!
LUCKY!

why is there a thong in my art box?
i don't know a/b the thong, but the arch building may be open 24/7, but does that apply during hurricanes?
Hey, has anyone noticed that the top of this web site resembles the weather of this week. The suns are also almost in a pattern. The first one needs to be moved to right before the last one. The fact that they are almost in a pattern is bothersome.
Here are the procedures in the worst case scenario of Ivan for Georgia Tech students:
Walk fast through the rain,
Bring your umbrella,
and if available, be sure to manuver your kayak down Bobby Dodd River as to aviod non-kyaking, umbrella carrying students.

Anyone keeping an eye on hurricane Jeanne?? or how about newly forming tropical depression Karl?? If anyone needs tips on how to fashion raincoats out of trashbags...just ask.(A trick I learned from reading Dilbert)
is it okay if our gesture drawings look like don hertzfeld animated cartoons?
my spoon is too big!
EVERYBODY DAAAAANNNNNCCCEEEE!!! AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!
I'm a banana.
Drawing exterior spaces and this wind are not a good combination, rain aside.
Yay for the rain being an example of a Trace! Hey George..guess what It rained on my paper! Talk about a great example of texture!
To whomever did this:

you sir or mam, rock.
haha. thanks. i did that, email me at gtg124q@mail.gatech.edu
Word of Caution!!
Make sure you wrap up your drawings in plastic before you walk to studio in the rain! Wet drawings = SOL
Saaaabiiiir, I thought you told us skipping lecture was bad
That movie was awesome! We should totally invite the Asian woman to do some stand-up for us during studio.
- if you can identify where she was from, more than just generic 'asian', may be we can. sk
- wasn't she from vietnam?
- I'm pretty sure, yes.
- Sabir- I found the Asian women in a google search. Her name is Suttiwan Cox and I think she is currently the director of PATH Academy in Dekalb county. not completely sure though. here's her picture:
Missing File (/cooldaze/uploads/cox.jpg)
and also she's actually from Thailand. Close to Vietnam, but not Vietnam.
the movie was ok and I get the point...doesn't it seem like the overall message is biased. America, and the South, need to make allot of progress in areas of discrimination, but is it not still the land of opportunity. I sympathize with illegal immigrants that are deported back to their home countries, but are we to ignore the law. I just think the message needs to focus on the whole picture, not just what is lacking. People don't sacrifice their live to get into this country because it is full of discrimination.
The movie pointed out how the south is living up to its old reputation of beinf so racist, and that ashames me.
have a thought on anything we've talked about over the last 6 weeks in 1060? put a thought or two here ... Discussion 3: 9/17/04 - putting the past 6 weeks in perspective
What is this online survey thing in the schedule section?
yeah - supposedly it is due in less than an hour, but i did a search and nothing came up - where is it?
WHAT?!?! someting was due? i dont think so.
Don't forget September 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Thanks! I almost forgot.

ARRRRRchitecture!
I FOUND A RULER WITH NO NAME IN THE STUDIO FRIDAY AT 6PM...IF YOU ARE IN TIM FRANK'S C AND LOST A RULER, ASK HIM AND HE WILL POINT YOU TO ME...IF IT WAS FROM ANOTHER CLASS...POST HERE AND I WILL GET IT TO YOU AS SOON AS I CAN.
it's mine...i was just about to make a run to utrech to getanother one and decided to check out cooldaze on my way out! Section: C1 Raja Jones, EMAIL: gtg986w
THANKS!
Arrrggghh! where the heck do we post these reflections about what we've thought about all the projects? cuz if it's on the site and i should have been doing them all this time, then why is it so freakin' hard to find?! someone please clear this up for me! btw,are they due at midnight today(sunday) or what?
Are your studio instructors confusin' you with big words? Do you think they be just makin' up nonsense? Maybe they are. You can learn the language too with the Do-It-Yourself Architectural Dialogue chart!
Arrggh!
oy, thaat there charts frikkin awesome. me monkey and meself's been a-wonderin about that straaeenge jargon we'd been hearin in our studio. ay, now it all makes licks of bloomin sense. arrgh, now if we only knews what weres supposed to do with this black messy stick she gaeve us, arrgh. -the scotch pirate
where do i go to rent a digital camera?
I thought pirates had parrots, not monkeys
- me 1992 playmobile pirate ship had a monkey for t'captin, not some girly-parrot. aye, it did. -the scotch pirate
Pirates are stupid.
- y' only think so 'cuz ya cain't be one. arggh
Arrgg..some scallywag didn't swab their poopdeck this morning
- aye, my apologies. that was me
When did we go from having Talk Like a Pirate Day to Talk Like a Pirate Week????
- Talk Like a Pirate Week???? You just came up with a great idea!
Aye!
That there black messy stick is for war paint matey! Arr! For you and yar parrot/monkey/small woodland creature/box of cereal/etcetRa!

- This is awesome! You think Sabir will dress up for us in lecture?
on a clear day you can see forever
Actually, you can't see forever due to the simple principle that earth is round. Also the way light bends through the atmosphere during the day, also stops your view. Sincerely,Debbie Downer.
What if it's a clear night and you're looking up? Can you see forever then?
Ahh well then you get into the sticky question of the universe. there is an end to it. So if you can see the end of it, then techinically you can't see forever, because there is some matter beyond that end of the universe. It's almost as confusing a concept as studio...almost.
I don't think there is an end to the universe.
I don't think there is an end to studio...

Am I the only one who just started their 1.7 project?
Due to the immaturity of a fellow classmate, I felt the need to insert a break here.
So how has everyone's final reviews gone so far?
seeing as mine hasn't started yet... wonderful!
I can honestly say I would not be making it through studio if it weren't for my fellow studio members. Thanks for making this so enjoyable.

Here's something for everyone to enjoy...
"Gun Control"
Marine Corps' General Reinwald was interviewed on the radio the other day and you have to read his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this!!!!
This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of National Public Radio (NPR) interview between a female broadcaster and US Marine Corps General Reinwald who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military installation.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?
GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper
rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.
GENERAL REINWALD: Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?
The radio went silent and the interview ended. You gotta love the Marines!
I don't know if you could come up with a better response than that one. My father was a Marine. I'll have to tell him. He'll think it's awesome. Thank you for sharing.
I'm equipped to be a prostitute AND my dad was a Marine. AND I think the guy's comeback was totally irrelevant.
- he's pointing out the logical fallacy in the interviewer's claim. if she really believed that line of reasoning that would make her as equal a prostitute as it would make the kid a violent killer.
- thank you
- I think you telling us your dad was a Marine is even less relevant. What's your point?
- First of all, the point is that the child is not a violent killer, and it seems to me that the lady giving the interview only had two goals in mind. Those goals being to get across a liberal standpoint on gun control and to throw the Marine an annoying question. Mind you, not a logical or pointful question, just an annoying one. Unfortunately for her, the Marine had a wonderful response.
- Yes, I will agree that pointing out that my father was a Marine has no bearing on the relevance of the interview and gun control and the like. I was merely pointing out that I found the interview and the Marine's comment interesting, and that I would share it with my father because he would enjoy it. Now the statement that I would like to share the interview with my father, mainly so we could share in what I know we would both find amusing, would be totally irrelevant if stated as such. So I included the pivotal fact that my father was also a Marine thereby tying his interest into the interview and providing a reason for me to share the interview with him. Is there something wrong with thanking another individual for sharing an item of interest that I enjoyed, or should I just be an ungracious individual. Maybe the world needs more graciousness as opposed to the trouncing of it that you have so aptly displayed. Is it truly necessary?
technically, everyone of us is equipped to be a prostitute, killer, and/or even a Marine...
...now if only I could harness all three of those powers...
- Talk to our own sabirtooth tiger for advice..ggrrrr..
- are you saying that he would be willing to tell us all about prostitution and killing things with guns?
check out the ongoing discussion on the lecture discussions. a new page will be created after wednesday's lecture. -david
How much wood could a woochuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood???
- Think about it, and the answer doesn't involve guns, prostitutes, marines, or even icecream.
- does the answer involve 60 feet?
- as much wood as a woodchuck can chuck wood.
this much http://www.getodd.com/stuf/stupid/woodchuck.html

I used this great link to make the dialogue

- haha... thats great. J
Does anybody have an idea of what the thesis or argument of the lecture today? He didnt present anything clearly or with purpose.
- you are correct. I'm not sure if it was a review of the social fabric and physical fabric of the street or and introduction to our street project. He had a pretty sweet power point though. -J
- Studio sucks because I can not draw well

It's getting old.
I was wondering, that since i'm a building construction major, if were ever going to use all of these supplies that I paid $200 for again since I don't have to take a studio after the CFY. I don't really like spending $200 every month on art stuff if I don't' use if ever again.
You shouldn't need to spend that much. If you are told by the bee's that be 'you need $200 worth of supplies' forget about it, they are wrong. First two months you will have the bulk of what is needed. after that, a pad of paper, a new pencil, and a new 'whatever you've lost'.
Sell your supplies when you are done if you don't believe they will ever be useful to you or give them charitably to next years BC major of kin. And next time please make a valid/informed argument, or else pose a question, which is what you done in an incredible, unsuccessfully 'covert' maner.
Does anybody have an idea of what the thesis or argument of the lecture today? He didnt present anything clearly or with purpose.
I feel ya man. The 'bee's that be' don't tell us what to buy, they give everyone a generic list and tell us to have it by a certain date. Those of us who know nothing about art supplies are at the mercy of the list. And don't forget about the one time studio fee of $75. Why is that not on our tuition?
i'd say its pretty clear, actually.
How bee's this augmentation.

Go to CoolLinks and post all your cool links.
Alright folks! It's that time of year again where all the studios need to grab their cameras and strive to take the best picture of Sabir. Imagine the photoshop possibilities of a great picture of our very own Sabirtoothtiger. All you have to do is take it and post it in the Soapbox. Remember to include what studio you are in so that you and your studio may bask in the glory of your success.
hey, does anyone in andi's b1 studio class know her email address?
For all those wondering about the origins of the Marine General joke... http://www.snopes.com/military/reinwald.htm
You have to go to this link if you have a bike on campus and use a U-LOCK for it. This could mean the difference in your bike being stolen or not!!!!

I sure am glad the GT security staff wanted us to all get these types of locks, lol!!!!!!
There is a nice exhibit by Lary Walker over in the Bank of America building's atrium that I think is quite a relevant mix between our earlier lectures and the present lectures on public space. He also has some work over at Agnes Scott's art building.
Where is my hot water???? Can they make a better "HOT WATER SYSTEM"??
I hope it is not as hard as our studio...
In Hanson, there is only hot water in the showers... so every morning I face a scalding torrent of boiling water.
This is tremendously great and somewhat relevant too, although in a funny way. Comparison of life in Piscataway, New Jersey, Kochi, Japan, and Zhouzhou, China
I propose all the BC Majors transfer to the school of Civil Engineering. From what I here, we actually learn the concepts of construction in that school rather then learning how to write checks and draw with charcoal.
looking for two good movies for this weekend?
go see code 46.
or ghost in the shell, part two
I recommend the "motorcycle diaries" True Adventure!
- i didnt know it had opened. recommend that as well. garcia bernal is a great actor. its a great story, (tho the director can be a little sappy sometimes). its a road story that like all good road stories is about discovery and opening up physical and mental horizons.
Do we have an article to summarize this week, or was that replaced by the reflection?
in deference to coa 1011 juries, no article to summarize for this sunday; but two for next week. just about to upload the assigned readings. give me ten minutes. sk
To all of the students in Pegah's B3 studio,
I sent you all of the pictures of your 1.7 project pin-ups via email.
Thanks Jim! ~ Julia
Thank you! - Fredrika
would people please fix their charcoals before scanning them? you are leaving charcoal all over the scanners and messing up others works. please be considerate when you are in the studio.
- Or even better, borrow a camera and photograph them.
Hey! I was wondering if we had to answer all the questions( see prompt) for our reflections ( coa1011) or do we have to pick one question and discuss it???
- "all those questions" is the right answer.
- hey, are we getting graded on these? -dp
- no.but they are a required part of the assignment and of the learning process. so give it a few minutes of solid thought and then fire away. sk
where do we post our reflections?
In today's lecture, the sidewalk projects that the guest speaker featured in his presentation were done by BC and ID students. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sabir tried to use this inclusion of projects by BC and ID students as a way to relate the CFY to those two majors. HOWEVER, AREN'T WE ALL REQUIRED TO DO THIS PROJECT REGARDLESS OF OUR MAJOR? (correct answer=yes) Therefore, I really did not see the connection that Sabir was trying to make between this project, the CFY, and those two majors? Would someone please elaborate on this issue? (I'm NOT saying that the CFY does or does not relate to BC and ID–I'm just saying that I don't see the connection that Sabir was trying to make)
if you don't see the connection, i'm not sure that you can
If you respond to a legitimate question with a poor attempt at a witty insult, I'm not sure you can either. I think every BC hopeful is frustrated by the work we have to do in CFY, but it isn't going to change and I'm just going to consider myself a College of Architecture Pledge and deal with it.
where do we check our grades for an S or U. I looked under the usual grading grid for summaries but could not find it. Please let me know where it is located. Thanks in advance! :)
when i saw the work hazem chose to show from pedEX (ex 6 in the year-long sequence) i noticed that a number of the students were now sophomores in the bc and id programs. looking back at the work and seeing the quality of observation and insight, it occured to me that while some of these students may not have seen a direct relevance to their intended major while they were engaged in pedEX, the quality of the work suggested that they clearly got something out of the experience, whether they realize it or not.
the great thing about learning (and teaching) is that its not simply a matter of inputs and outputs and direct correlations. if one engages fully, mentally and emotionally, in a project, then the payback is not limited to some immediate quantifiable product. the payback is the 'process', the kind of thinking and doing that expands ones horizons and gives us new experiences. and so when i hear "whats this have to do with my major" i want to say two things: first, 'i dont know, why dont you try and figure it out"; because, two, 'thats what being in college is all about". its not about putting yourself in little boxes but setting yourself adrift in an ocean of ideas and experiences. sorry for the lecture. now im going to go see a movie. as should you. sk
what movie?
i heard "shaun of the dead" is good
Is anyone here in Art History I? If you are, and you have all of the slide sheets for the past two weeks, could I quickly borrow them and copy them. You would be a huge help for at least 7 students as we all seem to be missing the same sheets. Thanks. E-mail me if you can help. my e-mail is gtg121h@mail.gatech.edu. Also, if you are adding to the soap box, please leave this message on here, at least until monday.
there are only 3 sheets..class was cancelled on tuesday..if u are missing the one from class during the hurricane..that sucks for you..since everyone that was there walked through torrential downpour to retrieve it
- are you sure there are only three? Because if there are, I am only missing the one from the hurricane, which is the one I missed because my car was completely dead (wouldn't even turn over). Thanks for caring.
~So what is there to do in Atlanta on a Saturday night?
~ you might want to check out a few things. There are several clubs, however, if you are under 21, they can be a hassle to get into. There are a lot of nice restaurants to check out, especially in the little 5 points area. You could check out some of the frat parties (if you're a guy, bring a girl as a peace offering), or check out one of the theaters around here. We have a couple of indy theaters that are a nice change of pace from the usual hollywood norm. One's just down tenth street.
- Does anyone know how to activate your buzzcard to access the studio at night?
AHHH THE COLOR IS SO MUCH BETTER.
we need to get them to change it so we don't have to use tables.
When they say "post a summary for each pair of articles", does that mean combine both readings into one summary or choose one from each pair and write a summary on each?
Hey everybody. Little Timmy has a problem he'd like to tell you about. He's got a disease, it's the "my car broke down and I couldn't get to the one class that I needed to get to, all while being caught in a freaking heavy torrential downpour" disease. While it is not currently life threatening, it does have the potential of becoming serious. To cure this disease, all he needs is one kind hearted person to offer up the slide sheet from that Art History 1 lecture and let him quickly copy it. Just the slide sheet alone could save young Timmy, and make him so happy he could dance.
Seriously though, it'd be wonderful if I could borrow someone's Art History 1 slide sheet (I know a few of you are in that class with me). I'd be forever indebted to you. Call - (678)575-2051 - or email me - gtg121h@mail.gatech.edu. Thanks in advance.
I left my drafting brush behind in the studio on Friday, and have been missing it ever since! If you found it this weekend, PLEASE e-mail me! gtg673x@mail.gatech.edu
so are we only supposed to do one summary for tonite's post since it just says the pdf is too large for the other article to be posted?
The posting isnt due till next sunday, 10.03. Maybe they'll fix that pdf during the week.
In class on friday Sabir said two of the postings were due tonite and two were due next sunday. on the assignments page the pdf article was one of the ones due tonite. so should we still worry about it?
I don't know what ya'll are reading. By my reading of the assignment page it just says we need one summary from each pair, both due next sunday. I'm no genius, well technically I am, but the assigment does not seem that vague. If i need to post a summary tonight...I'm in trouble since I spent most of the day at the hospital getting stitches in my face...hopefully sabir will cut me some slack.
Do we have to post anything tonight or not?
aaaah... blue is COOOOOL
This is wrong. Why is the soapbox blue???? It's just not the soapbox without the yellow. Come back yellow...
"One should always joke in the face of adversity; there is always humor, we are told." -A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
Yes. But what about the yellow?
"why the scaffolding? see, I like the scaffolding. I like the scaffoldigng as much as I like the building. Especially if that scaffolding is beautiful, in its way."
- A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
Yellow.
BLUE!!
You don't understand. The soapbox has to be yellow. It grabs your attention and says "look over here!" while the blue box is just boring and says "aren't I a lame soapbox? just ignore me while I go kill myself now"
Agreed. Yellow was exciting, fun, and, most importantly... not baby blue!
the blue seems to fit more, with the cooldaze theme, but it really isnt the soapbox without being yellow. its pretty, but it doesn't grab you.
It's a depressed soapbox. –> Sabir is no longer "Hot like Fire". Sabir is "Cool as Ice".
There's a lot of people in the Common First Year studio for it being 9:15 pm on Monday. Geez people, are we all procrastinators? I guess so...
I am amazed you could get through enough of AHWOSG to be able to quote it. I couldnt get into it for the life of me.
yellow said, "i'm the GA Tech cfy soapbox, your ...blipblipblip... right you better look at me"
blue says "hi there sugar pea, i'm the georgia institute of technology common first year soapbox. come in and taste some of my ice tea"
Blue sea breeze is just the new scent of the new and improved antibacterial soap...box
- it's also the color of my...windex.
When conjugating I for the "to be" verb, use "am", not "are." ie: "Am I not a lame soapbox?" Please, just because we are at tech does not mean we have to forget how to speak English. ]
- wow..you sure do speak good. Am I impressed? I think NOT!
- Well consider this: If the statement "I think therefore I am" hold true, then if you think not do you cease to exist?
- Actually, as of recently, I do cease to exist thanx to COA 1011
I think it's blue because of the rain....
You guys need sleep. This soapbox is starting to sound like the babblings of a crazy person.
Check it out:

So, is everbody ready for a break or what? I wish there was one this weekend! Oh well, the 11th and 12th aren't too far away. I am so ready to have more than the weekend off just to get caught up on everything... especially sleep...
- hate to break the news but midterm break is october 18 and 19. sk
A small drunken chinese giant staggars across town into a bar as to avoid his evil wife and slings his infinitely long and heavy tail on the counter. The bartender, which has a striking resemblance to Go'zirra, breathes fire on the small giant and says "get that fonshone out of here!" The chinese man does not respond. The bartender punches the small chinese giant in the face who then says "owww." The bartender hits him again much harder this time. He again replies "owwww," but much louder. In response to this, the Go'zirra look-alike becomes furious and takes the closest long-red-haired individual who is bounding in the door at speeds never before seen in human strides, and punches him square in the face. The bounder cannot calculate the integral of the pain inflicted, heirgo he cannot respond. He is then shot.
Chen is the man
okay not only does that not make any sense, but it is stupid and confusing.
It's not stupid. It's the most brilliant thing I've ever heard. I would like to know the person who wrote it.
↑ I bet that you wrote it
I think it's dumb as crap and terribly written, but I may lack some specific cultural background that is necessary to appreciate it.
You have to be there to get it!
Dont hate. Feel sad you arent as blessed as we to be in his presence. And then be shot.
I understand that I should not leave money and valuables lying around, but can I not leave my supplies for class in the studio during my class period? I came back to my desk after a pinup to find some of my supplies missing. To whomever is stealing from fellow students: I hope something very bad happens to you. Don’t be lazy, go to the store and get your own stuff! It is very hard to complete assignments when I suddenly don’t have what I need. I guess you can’t trust your classmates either. And stop talking during lecture, some of us actually want to hear the speaker and take notes.
Yeah, you people are freaking tools in lecture. How many of you actually are in such big of a hurry and close enough to the aisle and exits to get out as soon as the lecture is over? Most of you are just being intentionally rude and trying to signal to the lecturer that time is almost up by rustling your shit.
I understand that rustling around is rude and all, but you have to admit that these last couple of lectures (excluding monday's, that wasn't too bad) haven't exactly sent anyone to the edge of his/her seat. Also, the rustling that I've heard has only gone on while one of the TAs or Sabir are having what might as well be a private conversation w/ the person giving the lecture after the lecture has already been given. If you liked the lectures, and were able to pay attention and get notes, then good for you, and may I borrow you notes.
Walking out of a lecture is perhaps the rudest thing on the planet, but I have a class immediately following 1060 and sometimes I have quizzes and tests that I cannot be late for so I have to be ready to go when the lecture is over. I'm sure some other people are in the same boat. Luther Bryant
If you're waiting for classes and lectures to send you to the edge of your seat, your time in school is going to seem very long. Sometimes classes aren't interesting, but you still have to take them. There's a reason that not everyone enjoys school. A boring lecture does not justify disrespect for the other two hundred people in the room. Deal with it! And let others try to make a good grade.
you're all gay. lectures are boring as hell and everyone knows it so stop complaining.
Grow up kids, you're in College now, you all are suposed to act like adults, I know most people goes to class and respect everybody, but it's so rude when people starts talking during lectures
No kidding! I am bored to tears after about 10 minutes of that class, but it really doesn't matter how boring the lecture is, it's so rude to make so much noise at the end. Suck it up!
I know this is off the topic above, but people, there are headphones for a reason! Use them in studio! Or anytime you're in places other than your own room. Not everyone wants to hear your great collection of downloaded music!
I second that! Dealing with another person's taste in music is one thing, dealing with several all at the same time is another. Sunday night I was listening to The Matrix, Country, typical radio garbage, gangster rap, alternative, and some weird asian rap all at the same time. It was horrible. Please use headphones.
I like it. Even if most of it is music I don't like. Makes it feel like a party in here. A great big cube-drawing party. yay
While I don't see it as a party, hearing all the different music can help broaden one's horizon. If you can't deal with it, work some where else or get some earplugs. And not all of da music is downloaded. Bitches.
Indeed. If you dont want to hear it, bring your own headphones. Some of us play it because more than one person wants to here it. So if you're lonely... play with yourself.
For Real! Who doesn't like the song "She thinks my tractor's sexy"? Some people need noise to stay awake especially seeing how it's 3 am right now!
okay now that we've been drawing all of these cubes and stuff, it makes me want to watch the movie "cube" or its sequel, "cube ii: hypercube". they both are really bad movies, but i like them! soooo appropriate.
I heart [blue] cheese
I 3 Sabir
Alright, who put the eyeballs?
Those eyeballs are quite distracting. Hmmmm...they were cute for about 5 seconds. Thanks for brightening my day though after the many frustrations of studio work. I just don't get it. Oh well! :)
You are very welcome..don't want to distract you though, so i removed them..keep your eyes (and ears) : ) peeled for more fun coding/scripting
Click on Soapbox!!
What is this about the eyeballs?
I know the community we talked about in lecture is an awesome idea and will be good for Atlanta, but what is going to keep if from becoming like Buckhead? What happens when people don't feel safe walking through it at night?
Sorry, had to get rid of the popup alert...
"Apache" by The Sugar Hill Gang...but i'm sure everyone would Agree that they'd rather "jump on it" than "Apache"
whats up ya'll, i got the page up for a discussion about todays atlantic station/development lecture. check it out here... lecture discussions -david
for those of you that prefer to not have music/entertainment in the soapbox, you need to figure out some way to relieve yourself (don't hate, appreciate)...the rest of us on the otherhand feel that we need to lighten up studio a bit
- I agree, I like some of the cartoons and animation..it gives me that much needed laugh
all i can say is that y'all(those of you who manipulate/tamper with code) are "boring boring boring boring boring boring boring"
Alright I am ready for the next funny thing to happen. It is past 1am and 38 people are in studio still. Someone make a funny! :)
here goes...
A minister went to the local golf course hoping to find someone to play with. As luck would have it, there was a member in the pro shop looking for a game, so they were introduced and went to the first tee.
The member asked, "What's your handicap?"
The minister replied, "I'm a twelve."
The member said, "Oh, good, so am I. Do you want to play for a dollar a hole?"
The minister readily agrees.
The minister gets ready for his first swing, and makes a hole in one!
The man says, "Okay, good, you've taken your practice shot; now I'll take mine and then we'll start the game."
As the minister was shelling out eighteen dollars to the member, he said, "Say, I'd like for you to come down to the church sometime."
The member said, "'I'd like to do that."
Then the minister added, "And bring your mother and father; I'd like to marry them."
Yay for sleepless nights!

4:15am and we would like to say that whoever did the spiderman dancer made our day/night/morning (whatever)! Thanks. Next one please....
http://www.homestarrunner.com/ - I recommend Strongbad...
i feel like i recognize the dance spiderman is doing... but from where?
SPIDERMAN really made our day, too! Your TAs :)
When are we going to start the street projects?? Now they even have stuff posted on cooldaze about what we need to do, but Sabir just keeps telling us that it is coming up. And in the schedule for the semester, he was supposed to have at least one day already explaining the project in depth. Oh well, I guess we will just pull all nighters to get this done, too. Whatever floats your boat. When all the COA kids die from crazy diseases and insomnia, maybe eyes will be opened. EXPOSE THE CORRUPTION!
okay, the Street Projects are being set up on Swiki, you don't have to do anything or even look at the pages yet. SK will introduce the project Friday, and you'll know what you need to do and when. There are always shifts in the schedule to accomodate the guestt speakers and changing curriculum> But I hope it's not a sign of deeper corruption...

- General stupid question for one who forgot: About the COA 1011 lab fee; How much, who do I make a check out to, and where do I turn it in?
- from 1011 policies
Lab Fee. The mandatory lab fee for COA 1011 is $75.00. This is a one-time charge for all students in the Common First year. Please pay this fee, in cash or with a check (made out to Georgia Tech), or with your Buzzcard, to Preethi in the College of Architecture Business Office, room 251, on the second floor. Make sure you get a receipt.

You sexy Thang you! We believe in miracles...
Impressive!
- thanks for the compliment. if only!! sk
can people who live on west campus use the couch studio?
- no, you have your own space; we are over there as not to crowd you guys in the architecture building and wouldn't really appreciate being crowded after already getting shafted a bit. It already fills up some nights.
Next year's GT Architecture slogan:
- Its like a slumber party, with no sleep.
How about "it's like a slumber party, with no slumber," which would make it funny.
When did a slumber party ever have slumber? How about: It's like a slumber party, but without the party?
how about we just leave it at: "Hell on earth!!!"
You sexy

How long should the summaries for 10/3 be? I'm afraid mine may be too long.
Um LOVE this song. BUT–
about these summaries - is this a summary combining the two articles or one summary dealing with ONE of the articles in the pair? are we supposed to relate them? Please explain! thanks! and how on earth do you get music on the soapbox...
Don't download Windows Microsoft Service Pack 2 (SP2) unless you want a bunch of headaches and your computer to run a lot slower! My roommate and I had to reinstall the OS to fix all the problems SP2 caused.
Can anyone explain exactly how the summaries need to be formatted and how long they need to be?
assignment 10.03
Read all four articles. The first pair relates to lecture 09.22, the second to lecture 09.24. ALL FOUR ARTICLES are available on the Readings Page. Go to http://cool.coa.gatech.edu/cooldaze/753
Post one summary of one article from the first pair.
Post one summaryof one article from the second pair.
TWO summaries by 10.03.
What about the length?
surely, these arent the first summaries you are writing this semester. same instructions apply as before. http://cool.coa.gatech.edu/cooldaze/689?
ALL of that which was posted above is copied DIRECTLY from the assignments page. Let's be adults here; we can all read for ourselves. Let's get something more interesting into the soapbox!

this is just a random thought but i think it would look better if the backround of the soapbox was the same color blue as the COOL on the top of the page next to all the suns. i dont know if that could be arranged, but its something to think about.
- That's an interesting thought, but what color should the text be then, so that it is not only easy to read, but also unoffensive to the eyes?
white letters would work baby
yeah, white would be good
I think it is fine how it is.. white would be hard to read.
...or black on that color would be fine..
I'm not sure if white really would be that easy to read on this background. Black wouldn't be that easy either, and all the the colors would probably be either hard to read or just offensive to the eyes.
I know - let's just change the soapbox back to yellow.
|
uh... I dont think that's the same color as "COOL"
- Someone decided to edit the page at the same time as me when i went to fix this and didnt bother to include my changes. I HATE it when that happens. oh, and I was wrong about black. it works. I still miss yellow though

"let's be adults here"-
sounds like someone had a forgettable childhood
Hey people, theres this new show on bravo on oct 12th at 10pm called manhunt, it features a Tech student Paulo. You can go vote for him on www.bravotv.com. Come on people, REPRESENT!
I guess more than 60% of the people have not yet finished their reading summaries, which includes me. It's due tonight... and it's freaking long... btw, how about let's have random color background in the soap box! I'm sure some people know how to use "random" html code to do this. ("random"... this reminds me of our CUBE... no random for cube...)
Young, Single, caucasian male here. Going to be spending the next six hours of my life in couch. Any ladies who want a hot date, come join me :)
Hey, i was just wondering if anyone else thinks that the tilted arc looks like a disgusting peice of sheet metal someone made into a wall and put in a completely awkward place in hopes that people would actually call it art.
no, i don't think that at all. i think it's interesting. i read another article on it, and the way that it changed shape and form as you walked around the space was interesting. who cares if you're 45 seconds late for an "important business meeting" with your colleagues? why don't you just hop in your s-class benz and drive around the thing, or actually use what your legs were meant for... walking! who said art has to be elaborate? as long as it has a meaning or some form of symbolism behind it, that is what is important. it's rather disgusting how neoconservative traditionalists can outwardly "bash" a work of art based solely on its appearance. look for a deeper meaning.
are you just trying to sound smart?
well that was getting long and annoying
Vote 10 for Paulo
http://www.bravotv.com/Manhunt/The_Models/Paulo/
That's one Hot GT ME major
How do you know Paulo?
He's in my boyfriends fraternity
Malory...

Mal I sit next to you in lecture
It's my fraternity too, which ever that is?
(keep it on the low Mal)
I didnt right that about ur boyfriend t
ho or about what frat it was
hey RW
are you done with your summarys
No
have you picked your group?
hey paulo was my neighbor this summer cuz i lived in his frat house... i could hear through the walls & he would talk on the phone in spanish... it was annoying sometimes, but still, super hot

if we edit the readings summary page after the due date, does it re-date the page making look like we posted it late?
Yes, but i think TAs can look back to the HISTORY to see the changes.
they need to do that show, but with girls
chan gailey sucks we need a new coach and reggie ball is a pussycat why didnt he run all the way back and get a safety. Great job by GT defense this game even though the coaching sucks.
DON'T FORGET TO KEEP YOUR LANGUAGE WITHIN BOUNDS ON THE SOAPBOX!
o well... that dude is totally right. ^ If we could have completed some passes we could have been in this game.
I would like to contest that bold statement. The language in the previous entry is within bounds of accepted language here at Tech. I only see two words that could be questioned. Lets examen them in chronological order. "Suck" is a readily accepted word in homes across America. Meaning "to be bad" in this case. It is not considered a "dirty word" by most. The other word would be "pussycat" which we all know is just a little kitty! Should we slap tweety everytime he thinks he saw a puttycat? I should think not. Lets not forget to beliger only those who deserve the beligerence on the soapbox. Punk.
the blue is supposed to match the blue of COOL. cant figure out how to tho. suggestions? the proposed font color for the text is the orange of the suns. sk
I don't know what was wrong with the yellow ones. And I value my eyes, so if the box is blue, don't make the font orange. That would be one of the hardest things to read ever. If you are hellbent on using that color scheme, swap them. Orange background with blue text. My eyes give a respectful veto to the blue with orange text idea.
- blue and orange are complementary colors. which would make it easier to read.
- but they're still both really BRIGHT complementary colors. I like the blue in the 'cool' for the background and a darker blue for the text. very nice.
I can't believe so many people have wasted so much time bitching about the Soapbox colors.
- YELLLLLLoooooooooW!!!! bring back yellow
can anyone find the "posted" questions for the final exam? I can't.
