The following exercises should make clear our approach to drawing. We do not think of them as pretty pictures, as illustrations (the more realistic the better) or as artistic (read subjective) renditions of the world. We are primarily interested in drawing as a means for exploring and communicating ideas graphically. A successful drawing is an argument made graphic: clear about what it wishes to communicate or explore, strategic in its choice and use of media and genres, and compelling in its execution.

Our goal is to make one think, with Robin Evans, of drawing as both the object and the apparatus of inquiry. Or, to say it another way: drawing as something that is simultaneously a product (object/objective) and a process (apparatus/toolkit).
