1011 setiawanONE As I re-read the reflection I wrote every end of each exercise, it was almost suprising how much we have come through. It is not only the amount of work that we have done, but also the progress we made. In exercise 1, we learned the basic drawing skills such as line weight, perspective drawings, tone and value, and etc. However, we never actually have received the "exact instruction" we need to follow. After each homework, we usually did the same homework again to get to the point where our works met the point what they should have been. I figured that it is some kind of method of teaching us that the studio work and skill is what we have to earn, not given. After surviving the first semester of common first year, I cannot help but think twice before I say something is boring. Every object is interesting in many ways when you actually get to see them closer. TWO I have learned that I have to be active during the studio hours. At the beginning of the semester, I was quite and shy. This turned out to be not helpful as I have to interact, communicate, and understand with other people in the studio. Also I learned that I should desire to learn, otherwise, it is a waste of time and energy to attend the studio sessions to begin with. But the most important lesson I have learned is the "time management" skill. Unlike any other classes, you cannot procrastinate the studio work unless you are willing to stay up every single night before studio. Those are the things that I would carry forward to the next semester studio class. THREE the instructor - The insturctor tells us briefly about the each exercise we do and check on our works. He helps us to work on a better perspective as a teacher and criticize each of our work. the project or exercise brief/handout - The handout tells us the details about the exercise and the requirements we need to keep track of. This handouts are really useful when the instruactor is not around. They also let us know the general concept of the project of the exercise. the review process (pinup, final jury) - The reviews we do every studio session really helped me alot to correct the works and make them better. At the end of the each exercise, we have a final review which we get to explain what we did in front of a guest reviewer. This could be a little stressful but also helped me to get an objective feedback and critics. the inquiry book - This book is a portfolio of what we have done in the exercise. It should be well organized and helped me to learn the formats of the organization. your fellow students - They are people I saw the most this semester. We exchanged our ideaa, critics, and suggestions. the studio space itself - It is an open public space that usually more than 20 people work at a time. This space was trashed at the end of the semester because people did not recognize the place as their own. CFY studio became of the memories I would never forget because yes, we had to work really hard and also it let me to go beyond what I thought my limit was. FOUR In exercise 1, we learned the basic drawing skills; how to draw, observe, and interact with the space and everything in it. Exercise 2 poured all of the skills we learned from the exercise 1 together with some new skills such as investigation. In exercise 3, we were told to think from the other side of we used to think and see an object or a drawing as a material for our investigation. My favorite part was exercise 1 because I enjoyed learning some new techniques.
ONE As I reread my reflections and postings from previous exercises, some of the things I find most striking are not just all of the new concepts we have been introduced to throughout this course, but the ways in which they build upon each other and relate within themselves. I am now able to see how the exercises we did the first week of class were still important in our final exercises and how we used tools and techniques we learned early on throughout the semester. Each exercise built on the previous one: first we learned basic skills for drawing, focusing our attention and most of all looking at the world around us and gaining a better understanding of it through different artistic investigations. Later, in exercise 2, we combined these techniques and new-found systems to help us better investigate our object in a more real-life sense. Next, we used the materials we gathered in Ex 2 and the skills we gained in Ex 1 to put together our final project. Yes, with each exercise came a greater understanding of not only how the things around us worked, but how we worked as students, as observers, as bystanders. With all of the new skills we have come to possess, I feel more prepared to take on the assignments that await us down the road because I understand what I have learned. Now, after experiencing 1011, I have a much better understanding of all of these things. Not only am I aware of new methods for drawing and models making, but I can understand how to best choose to represent something trough my drawings and models. I am also a better formulator and explorer after all of the new investigating I have done this semester. I was able to see new ways of examining everyday objects and formulate a plan to gain a better understanding of them. I was then able to analyze these aspects and create new inquiries I would not have been able to previously see or grasp. Overall, my understanding of design has increased also through readings and working with different compositions, be it perspectives of the architecture building atrium or creating a layout for my riffs. TWO Of course, all of the new drawing techniques we have learned throughout 1011 and the new skills with different materials and mediums I will take with me. But I will also take the new ways I have learned to look at and explore things that I have gained through the different exercises over the semester. I will pay special attention to the new procedures we are taught next semester and try and apply them to the ones we have already learned. As we progress, the basic procedures we first learned will be altered and expanded to fit the new material. However, they will become even more important in our understanding. THREE The instructor was our leader throughout all of the exercises. They would help introduce us to the exercise, explain it in a more comprehensible way, and give us our work assignments. They would then lead us as we reviewed each of our classmate’s work, leading discussions and prompting us to think about what we had done and what each of our classmates had done. The handouts at the beginning of each section helped to introduce us to what we would be working on and to get an overview of the projects. We could refer back to them at any time we didn’t understand the overall purpose of something or general principle behind an exercise. The review process allowed us to take a look at what all we had created through the course of the exercise and gain another’s perspective on our work. It was helpful to see what those who had not been directly involved in the process thought of our work. The inquiry book gave us an opportunity to look back on each exercise and gain a better understanding of its purpose. Looking back, we could more easily select our best work and explain why it was important to the process and overall learning experience. Our fellow students were there for support when we needed it and to help us by comparing ideas and progress. The studio space was there not only as a place to do work, but to also gather inspiration, whether it was from the atrium when we had to draw perspectives or from fellow students working with us. The studio experience is one that cannot be compared with other learning experiences because it is so different from everything we had experienced in high school and prepared ourselves for in college. It is a very individual learning environment in which personal attention is necessary and standard. It is more hands on and interactive, like a lab or internship in which we could learn through testing different methods and ideas. FOUR In exercise 1, we learned the basic skills needed for this class. Not only did we learn different types of drawing, but we learned how to look at the space around us and how to best communicate it. Exercise 2 used all of these skills and put them together with our new investigatory skills to explore an everyday object and look at it in ways we never would have before, finally, in exercise 3, we were forced to leave behind the object we had spent all of our time studying and come up with a new, unique way of looking at its qualities and “DNA.” My favorite exercise was exercise 2 because I liked being able to concentrate on a single thing and I thought the process was very organized and well planned-out. Paige Thomas Gyeong Kim 1. When looking back over my reflections, I realized how far I’ve come with design on the computer and using my studio supplies, especially charcoal. In each exercise, certain lessons were revisited and each exercise built off of the next. I feel like I have grown greatly over this past semester, and the ways I think about new ideas in design, sketching, and modeling has shocked me as I reflect from pre-1011 to post-1011. 2. I will take the skills I have learned in not only managing my time, but also skills in drawing and design that will definitely benefit me for next semester. I will need to pay more attention to the functions of the adobe programs next semester, so that I can design better. 3. The instructor and brief are there as guides to direct in us in each exercise. The review process and our inquiry books are here to help us critique and learn from the work we have done. Lastly, my fellow students and the studio space itself is here to promote learning in an interactive way. The studio is different from the classroom or job because it is interactive. The studio provides the hand on learning one finds at a lab, tutorial, or internship. 4. The sequence of the entire 1011 was pretty much logical. First, we learned basic drawing skill from the contour line drawing to the charcoal drawing. So, we gained basic knowledge of drawing. Then, we studied one object over the long period in various ways. Finally, we learned how to go through design process. I think this process and sequence was very good. My favorite exercise was the second one. 1 What I see as the most important thing is the reference to previous exercises. Several times in almost everyone’s reflections there are references to the previous exercise(s). Seeing this and just thinking logically there cumulative nature of this course in an integral factor. Try to mix up the exercises in an order that makes sense besides: 1, 2, 3. There isn’t another way that makes sense. The skills that were learned exercise 1 carry through exercise 2 and into exercise 3. And exercise 3 is impossible to do without first completing exercise 2. The way of thinking and techniques learned in each of the exercises are cumulative and are related to each other. A whole new way of thinking has been developed by going through each of these exercises. 2 The most important thing that I learned this semester that will help me next semester is procedure. If you understand the produce of the exercise and then out it into practice, what you produce will accomplish the goals of the exercise. The procedure entails everything that can be considered. It tells you what to use and how to use it. And as in exercise 3, if the procedure basically dictates “use your imagination” just do it. Know the procedure, plan accordingly, and just go. 3a The role of the instructor is to make sure that we understand the procedure and tools that we are to use during the exercise, and to make sure that we stay true to the procedure and continue to use the tools properly. The instructor also makes sure that what we are producing is accurate in terms of following the procedure and if not to tell us what we need to do differently to fix it. The exercise brief is like a rubric, a basic outline of what needs to be produced at the end of the exercise and how we are to go about that. The review process is to identify what we could have done differently in order to better accomplish the goals of the exercise and also to identify what was done properly. The inquiry book is the composition of the success that we had during the exercise. It holds out best work that best accomplished the goals. Our fellow students play the role of struggling alongside you and sharing their interpretation of the project and the direction that they are taking in order to complete the exercise. The studio space provides an atmosphere that should be a place of work, while also being easy to converse with others about the work that is being done. 3b Studio is the most rigorous learning experience that I have ever gone through. For those through have a mind that does not easy grasp abstract concepts, such as mine, it is very difficult. For almost any other class that I have gone through there is some type of “formula” be it general or specific that can be indentified and followed, that is true for a math problem, an English paper, etc. That is not true for studio, and that is what sets this class apart from all others and what gives it the rigor that it has. 4 The pedagogical goals of each of the exercises were to teach us a new way to view and describe the world around us. The detail and intensity of the way that we were to describe increased with each exercise. My favorite exercise was exercise 3 once I understood what the goals and procedure of the exercise were. We had the most freedom to describe what we wished, it was just finding the way to describe it so that others were able to see what we wanted them to that was hard. Patrick Bell Kok LeeONE As I re-read the reflection postings and handouts from exercise 1, 2, and 3, I can definitely see a connection now. This whole semester’s intention was not to teach various totally separate topic, techniques, or proposals but instead they’re all connected deeply, and at the same time they’re a build up to exercise 3. In other words, exercise 3 may the true intention of this semester and exercise 1 and 2 are just the preparation for you to succeed if not learned well. One obvious pattern I noticed while going through each exercise was the usage of knowledge learned from previous exercise, each starting from exercise 2 I can see that I needed to apply knowledge from ex 1 and so on. I can definitely growth in learning now that I look back at all 3 of my exercises that each teaches different principles. i.e. Ex. 1 exposed me to the common environment around me with some uncommon details and techniques, thus giving me a whole new understanding and ways to capture the details. Ex. 2 put me into a situation where I must rely on others to carry out the exercise correctly, and at the same time I was able to see how other people carry it out differently than me. Besides that, ex. 2 also utilizes what I’ve learned from ex. 1 and focuses them onto one object. Finally, I must utilize the confidence I gained to approach exercise and explore it creatively without any fear. Overall, the workload in this class has built up my skills one way or another and helped me gain enough confidence to approach unknown and unfamiliar subjects by myself. Before I took this class I thought it would just be a class to horn your skills and expose me to common knowledge but after I took this class I realized I got much more that I expected. First off, drawings are 2D representation and modeling is 3D representation, but what I didn’t know was that through the magic of 2D representation I was able to connect it to 3D as I start drawing 3D images from on a 2D media. Other type of representation available to us was photographs, which isn’t always the right type of media to use since it flattens a 3D representation and it loses important details. The process of coming up with an idea must be the hardest part of this course, this is because they’re not always correct and there are little clues on to where to start. Therefore, I realized that I must constantly train myself mentally in order to survive the next review. Analysis and inquiry are actually the foundation of exploring and formulating an idea because they give you what you can work with and then you turn them into your own materials, that’s why three people working on the same object can have totally different ideas and representation at the end. Designing sounded the same as exploring and formulating an idea to me in the beginning, but later I’ve realized that formulating an idea is the journey of finding an inspiration and designing is the process of making it come true. TWO For me, the ‘learning’ I will carry forward to 1012 will not simply be the material and knowledge I’ve absorbed from this class but the process to explore the idea and utilize them; in other words, I will carry forward the technique I’ve learned to extract information or to learn as my main advantage. For 1012, I will continue paying attention in class but at the same time I will also pay more attention to tiny and insignificant details because if there is one thing I’ve learned in 1011 it would be how an object can be extremely complicated if you give it a chance. Three Throughout the whole semester in the studio, everything has its meaning and role to fulfill our needs. First off, an instructor is the most important role here because he or she acts as a guideline to students and also a safeguard in case students get side tracked. The project, exercise brief /handout here are considered as the tools to practice and refine our skills; they’re important because what good is an instructor if he does not have the tools to teach. The review process including pinup and final jury act as checkpoints here; they’re necessary because when you pin them up, other people such as juries can provide important advice and different point of view of approaching it whereas you can’t think of by yourself. The inquiry book also translate into a way to document your progress; it has a significant role here because it presents your result and documentation in a formal way so you may look back and see how will you have done it differently. The fellow students of studio are perhaps the most helpful sources here because they were taught the same material but at the same their ways to presenting it can be so different; therefore it is always helpful to discuss ideas with my fellow students. Finally, the studio space itself is a must. That’s because studio is the most important ‘tool’ of learning, it must be able to contain all students including their own workstations. The reason behind it is because when students get together without barriers, they are able to interact freely, thus creating a more wonderful result. Learning in different environments such has it benefits; for an example: the main purpose of learning from a seminar is to absorb information because chances are that the lecturer knows much more than you, learning from the classroom typically includes learn what you can and utilize that knowledge and put it into work. The lab is another form of classroom except it usually lacks teachers; in other words, it’s a place for you to work creatively by yourself. As for tutorial, it can be a place of free learning without any rules; you may learn as much as you want or as little as you want. Finally, internships and jobs are locations where you put what you have learned to use; meaning you take the knowledge you have learned and experience you gained from internships and give it back to society. FOUR As I mentioned in the beginning of this reflection, I can surely see that all three exercises are connected deeply. First of all, the sequence which they unfolded the exercises make perfect sense because starting at exercise two, each exercise required skills and knowledge gained from the previous exercise to proceed. For exercise one, it started by drawing what we think we see to what the actual lines we perceive. Then it went on studying numerous media which we can use to capture objects as well as appropriate one to do so. Finally, we were exposed to many elements such as light and shadow. In summary, exercise one teaches you how to draw appropriately by using appropriate media so you may be able to present the desired result. Starting at exercise two, the instructor had allowed the students to present freely of their ideas by allowing them to choose any media to present the result as long as the idea is appropriate. Its goals in ex. 2 are to get students to work together since integration plays a huge role in the future; at the same time, we were also expected to be able to draw different ideas from each other and see what we lack. Finally, ex. 3 allowed us to gain complete freedom in any kind of way. However, it was also the hardest because we lost all of the guidelines. As for what ex.3 was suppose to teach us, I believe we were required to take all the knowledge we’ve gained to artistically craft out a complex idea from a simple one using the skills we’ve acquired; in other words, to complicate a plain idea creatively or make better of an existing one. My favorite exercise of this semester has got to be exercise 3 despite the fact that it was insanely intense and harsh. This is because we were given the total freedom of crafting out our own ideas without any restriction as long as it fits within the requirements. Zach Brown 1011 Exit Reflection One Re-reading previous reflections upon activities allows me to regain an understanding of what took place or what thoughts existed about the activity at the time. Now looking back, I realize the processes and abilities each exercise left or instilled in me. The most notable aspect of the each exercise is how each exercise builds upon the exercise before it. This is a pattern noticed through the duration of these exercises. The abilities from exercise one or information acquired played a significant role in performing exercise two where new knowledge was obtained. The knowledge or processes of exercise two that built upon the pedagogical goals of exercise one, were involved in exercise three. This pattern of building upon previous exercises leads one to believe that the next exercise in the spring will be based upon the information or skills obtained in the first three exercises. Confidence is the largest growth in learning experience by me. I definitely feel more confident in my ideas and proposals for the exercises as well as my abilities or skills. Over the course of the semester I definitely feel that my process of formulating and exploring ideas has expanded. One way is the ability to draw and create models to portray the process or idea discover through the process of exploration. The range of this process has gone from minimal (at the beginning of the semester) to the current state (can’t label it a maximum yet) through a different view of the gravity or importance of inquiry and the range of possibilities of exploring or viewing an object that have become evident over the semester. From the new level of analysis, a wider variety of new innovations or designs can be produced. Two From 1011, I expect to take forward the processes that have been discovered. By processes I mean the different types of drawing and model building that can be utilized to “speak” for an idea that comes from the analysis performed in the exercise. Especially the analysis that was performed from exercise three. The last exercise was my favorite because I was able to play with my own knowledge and abilities to produce my own creative design proposal. The processes came from the previous exercises, but I was able to put my own twist to them. In the upcoming semester I hope to utilize the skills once more to open new doors or learn to new abilities that by the end of next semester will allow me to produce my own twist my newly acquired abilities. In 1012, I plan to pay special attention to the processes of each exercise. Arief was always big on procedural aspects of each exercise, and it definitely helps one learn or take from each exercise the desired information. By paying close attention to procedure, I will learn the desired knowledge next semester that will allow me to create my own innovations in future projects. Three The instructor exists in the studio to help in clarity of process and to provide insight on one’s project proposals. The brief provided me with an introduction or preview of what was to be learned through what was to be produced. The review process provided me with the sense of how every person interprets a project differently; therefore, my goal was to make the project easily readable so that the reviewer may understand my though process or my interpretation. It also exists to open our eyes to the range of possibilities for a project than just a single view. The inquiry book provides me with a series of drawings that highlight the important knowledge gained through each exercise. My comrades or fellow students exist to critique my work as the reviewer does, but can do it on a more personal level. The studio space provides us (the studio students) with a work area to grow in common knowledge together. The studio learning experience differs from a class room setting because the knowledge was not spoon fed to the students, the process of inquiry allowed the student to learn. In other words, the student acquires information through their own explorations than through an instructor. Four The pedagogical goals of exercise one was to open the students mind about what an object is and how it is perceived in space. Throughout the exercise, students learned different drawing techniques that would be used in the future to relay their process for thought to others. The students learned to communicate through drawings. In exercise two, the students dissected an object. My object was a can opener. In this exercise we learned to view the can opener as a series of intertwining parts that function together. We looked at the object through its composition, its interactions with people, how it’s assembled, and its analogs and precedents. From those filters we were able to draw conclusions about the relationships of each filter or we were able to understand the ideas behind the production of an object and how aspects of that object relate to one another. In exercise three, the final and my favorite exercise, we took a drawing from exercise two and manipulated the DNA of that drawing. I chose the geometric drawing to manipulate and from that I produced my final proposal. This activity taught the students how to design a different object from the aspects of another object. The purpose is to utilize components of one object by manipulating them to produce your own design that is relevant to or conveys the DNA of the original object. This last project was my favorite because it allowed me to use the skills that I have just acquired in the previous exercises in my own way. In other words, it gave me some freedom to explore the newly obtained abilities. These activities came in this sequence because each one built upon the pedagogical goals of the previous exercise. Amyn Soldier 1. What strikes me is the effort and commitment CFY students undergo while progressing from simple blind contour drawings to that of tone with charcoal and finally to deep exploration of computerized rendering in photoshop and illustrator. Yes I think the patterns were a broad varied introduction and then narrowing down the strong points into a finalized more involved/detailed project. Yes I did see a cummulative growth that was highly engaged throughout the semester. This was especially prevelant in exercise one and two when we broadened our toolbox from just pencils to charcoal and in exercise to, further into trace paper, photoshop skills, and modeling. 2. Into 1012 I will carry all the skills as far as pencil work, charcoal, and computerized drawing skills. But most of all I think I will take my patience. That was very important for me to have especially since I was commuting back and forth from home. It was very though to get through the semester but having patience and working hard are probably the two most important things I will carry with me to 1012. I really dont know what 1012 is or what it will offer so I cant say what I will pay special attention to. However, I would really like to use a t-square and maybe do some type of drafting work. 3. The instructor is there to provide support, guide, and show students the proper methodology while undergoing specific exercises. The exercise handout was a very good source for answers when I had questions about what to do. It was a rough guideline and there were always aspects and ideas to go around and expand on the outline. The review was there to introduce us to a real world atmosphere and show us how it is when we design something that no matter how much work we think we have put into it, it must follow procedure and be insightful to the client. The inquiry book was like a journal in which we would put some of our works and make comments on them throughout the semseter. It was kind of like a check list and a day to day investigation of how we have progressed. My fellow students are great. They provide support and we all have to stay up late at nights so it was very nice to have support from people going through the same problems as myself and many others. The studio area was well set up and provided ample room to do work; however, there was a lack of supplies such as chipboard and the computers and scanners were always full so that was a slight problem. The stuido experience was a lot more interactive with hands on crafting and drawing and such but all issues and ups and downs were shared with peers and supporting studio mates. In a classroom this is rarely the case. 4. It was quite interesting to begin the semester with such a exercise as blind contour but this was to introduce us to foreground, background and middle ground and also subconciously some of us used line weights and qualities. It was kind of like an introduction to pencils and paper. Then as we moved further along into the charcoal it was a more free-spirited activity especially with the gesture drawings and thumbnails with the fabric work. I assume the charcoal gesture and other aspects of the charcoal was to show us that there is a high degree of freedom in creativity within the pedagogy; however, it must remain within the guidlines and borders of the requirements. This is when we were introduced to the charcoal drawings. It was at first to show us what thumnails were, the many different ways of describing a space with topography, contour, gesture, etc. How we could zoom in and out of a space and then create a final vibrant understanding using light, shadows, cast shadows chiaruscuro and much more. The perspective drawings were my favorite and I think I excelled a lot in that part of the semester. I was quite intrigued with creating a depth and a deep space out of just lines and line weight/qualities. They were allowing us to see that a building or scenery or other things like a landscape can be seen or even created with depth ona piece of paper. Because thats how all buildings and ideas and realizations start out in the first place. After these activities, we began exercise two which was quite interesting in that we broke down, in my case, a can opener and began to understand its basic functions, morphology, interactions, assembly, fabrication and much more. It was more of a reseach and development aspect. It required us to break down our object, find basic components and understand how it was put together. It seemed like pedagogically it was like making or creating a building or design, we decide what we want to create, break it down, and then create it in a constructive fashion. Exercise 3, riffing, was interesting and tough at the same time, it was nice to see how we could create something totally different from our wide range of toys from exercise two and then come out with something quite different but at the same time keeping the DNA or the basic components of the object. This pedagogically was to me like being able to create and use a lot of imagination but still relating it to its natural form and shape. My favorite exercise was ex 1 becuase that was the one in which I learned the most and I had a lot of fun making the persepective drawings and it was nice to do charcoal work with fabric and light studies. Lance Dudkowski 1. Some important things that we commented on were the type of drawings we had to do. It was extremely important to understand why we did a certain drawing compared to others. Another important thing was the way we looked at drawings whether we drew what we saw, what we thought we saw, or descriptions. We all really found something new in each exercise that really built upon each exercise. We all learned how to draw more comprehensively adding in more detail and trying to clarify each drawing. I believe that I really learned what to do and what not do to when drawing. I believe I did boost my skills taking this class; it really taught how to view the world differently. Models now have a totally new meaning in my head. They do not have to actually look like the object—they just have to relay the information and DNA of the object. This class has showed that there are too many ideas and explorations that could happen for the world. I can now show many different explorations through new materials and drawings. Inquiry and analysis changed to meaning looking deeper than just skin deep. It should look deeper into the object relating it to the general world around it. Designing has not changed because I do it all the time. I love creating and redesigning everything. Nothing changed as a result of 1011. 2. The new materials and drawing types are the main things that I will carry over into 1012. Next semester I plan to make sure I do not etch much but use a continuous line. I also plan to make sure I scan my pictures well in order to use them in Photoshop or Illustrator. AutoCAD did not work very well. 3. Studio Workshop Process a. The instructor was supposed to be there supporting us where we needed it and making sure we understood the concepts of the exercises. The handouts made sure we did all the work that we were told to do, as well as, tell us some history and some facts on what we were actually doing. The review allowed us to show off what we learned throughout each process. It allowed others to comment on and criticize what we could do better in the future. The inquiry book should have helped us analyze how we did each drawing and what we learned from the exercise. Our classmates were there to be friends but more importantly to help with the tears and give suggestions on what we could do better. The studio gave us a place to call home and a place for us to work with fellow classmates on homework. b. The studio was really a great place because it gave hands-on learning. No one really just lectured on what we should do. There were tables and computers that allowed us all to work with each other and help each other. 4. The goals for these exercises were to teach us how to draw, show us new ways and materials to draw, and give us new ways to view the world. New drawings allowed us to view the world differently. New materials allowed us to see the object in different ways, taking apart its DNA. New ways to view the world—drawing what we see—showed us at the beginning how to start each drawing. Exercise 3 was my favorite because we strayed from the normal. We got to use the computer and add color and fun things to our drawings. David Duncan 1. What strikes me after re-reading the reflections for exercises 1, 2, and 3 is just how much we’ve learned over just a few months and how far we have progressed in that time. Each exercise taught us a tool that the following exercised used to make more dynamic and interesting investigations. It was as Sabir Khan said; when he said that this semester would be like learning a new language. It was hard to understand everything at the beginning, but towards the end, everything clicked and made sense. The only reason it made sense so quickly was because we were completely submerged into the culture. I would also say that I do see a cumulative growth in my learning. I understand the tools; their strengths and weaknesses; and have more confidence in my skills to use them properly and effectively. That growth has taken me from thinking of drawings and models only as representations, to seeing them as tools for inquiry that then become representations. My process of formulating and exploring ideas has also changed as I have begun think of how I could optimally explore something rather than just start right up with drawings. That goes for my ideas of analysis and inquiry. I have also learned that there is a lot more that goes into designing than I originally thought. 2. I think learning about the drawing types, photography, Photoshop, Illustrator, and models techniques will carry over to 1012. Those were the basic skills that we learned and that we can carry with us for as long as we continue to use and to hone them. I plan to pay attention to the same types of skills that will be taught in 1012. Since it is still the CFY, we will not be focused on a particular major of study, but we will learn more techniques that can be applied to projects in our future. 3. a. The instructor explained the exercise in detail, and then led our reflection period. He was also there to point out directions we should take our project, and comment on our strengths and weaknesses so we could adjust our work accordingly. The exercise brief provided instructions for the exercises that we could refer to at anytime. They also included examples of work and hints as to what we should look at when reviewing our work. The review process gave everyone a chance to step back and look at the work they had done, and it also let us students know what was read from our work by someone who was unfamiliar with it. The inquiry book gave us a chance to reflect on what we had done so far, and reestablish what the goals for each exercise were. Our fellow students were there for us to bounce ideas off of, and they also acted as reference points so we could see if we were headed in the right direction. The studio space itself was a work area that was semi-private, but that gave us a place to show our work to other students as we actually worked on it. b. The studio learning process was extremely personal. It was not a big lecture or a distant workshop or tutorial. It definitely allowed for a larger overall growth in skills and understanding than any other type of learning situation would have. 4. The goals for exercise one were to teach us looking, investigating, and drawing skills. We then took those skills, and applied them to exercise two, which was deep analysis and dissection of an object. Exercise two also honed our Photoshop and modeling skills. Exercise three then took had us build up the “DNA”, we discovered from exercise two, into something unique. The final exercise also added the tool of Illustrator. So the process was give us tools, then use the tools to break an object down, and then build it up again in a new way. My favorite exercise was the second one because I really got into the analysis of my object and was successful in it. I thought exercise three had promise, but I was confused as to the acceptable procedures and did not reach my full potential. Garret Mitchell Now as I go back and reflect upon the exercises, I realize how each one builds on the other and how exercise one is needed to give a basis for the rest of the course. I can see how my learning developed over the year and how it began with continuous lines and developed into manipulating drawings and developing new objects. I have more confidence in myself now when I am given a new project, I have the skills to dissect it and develop new ideas. The learning that I will carry forward to 1012 will be the techniques and drawing styles that I have learned throughout the year in 1011. Also, the ability to think abstractly and to not just see an object as it is, but what it can be. In 1012 I will pay attention to the new techniques used for drawing. Also, the different types of drawings that we will be doing that were not used in 1011. The role of the instructor during the exercises was to help guide the students through the course and to help them grasp the understanding of each exercise and to teach the techniques used throughout the course. The project’s role was to help the students develop several techniques used throughout the College of Architecture and to increase the student’s level of thought. The reviews were used for the students to display their work and to hear the opinions and thoughts of someone not involved in the process. The inquiry books helped for a reference back to previous techniques used that can be developed upon. Working with fellow students is good to be able to help each other and get others perspectives on your work throughout the process. The studio space itself is to allow one place to be able to spread out your drawings and to have several resources all in one place. The studio learning experience is different then the normal classroom experience. The studio is extremely hands on and gives the chance to develop your own ideas through your work over extended time periods. All of the exercises built upon each other, exercise one started with lines and developed into spaces and objects. Exercise two took objects and was explored through many different categories and variables of thinking. Exercise three took the drawings of the object from exercise two and manipulated them to make new objects. All of exercises took the techniques learned in the previous exercises and built upon them and added new techniques to create new works. Sarah Scarborough ONE The advantage of distance allows me to better understand a topic. Looking back to exercise 1, I understand the mistakes I made. I was unclear of the purpose of these new drawing types we were introduced to. Now, they have become like second nature to me and I have used them with thinking twice in later exercises. Each exercise built upon the one before that. Exercise 1 introduced us to a variety of different drawing types. Exercise 2 then called us to use those drawing types and ways of looking at the world to analyze our object through several filters. Finally exercise 3 used the drawings from exercise 2 to form the basis of our investigation. We then used all the knowledge from the previous two exercises to produce riffs of our drawing. I definitely discerned a cumulative growth in learning in myself. I felt very lost and confused in the beginning, but along the way it seemed to have clicked. I think at the end I understood what was asked of me much better than in the beginning. Pre 1011, I thought the only important drawings were the final ones and I thought models were only meant to represent the final product. Post 1011, I understand that the process drawings are really the most important and that is where most of the important information comes from. I have also discovered that models can be used to represent even a beginning sketch and can be very helpful throughout the entire process. Pre 1011, the process of exploring ideas only consisted of brainstorming and making lists. Post 1011, I have discovered that it is necessary that do more than just think of ideas. It is important to actually work with an idea through a view sketches and diagrams to understand its full potential. Pre 1011, Analysis and inquiry had no meaning to me in terms of drawing and designing. Post 1011, I have found that proper analysis of our work is crucial to a successful proposal. We have also made inquiry books that document our work and these are necessary to see our growth over the semester. Pre 1011, Designing meant building houses and products and could only be done by qualified professionals. Post 1011, I learned that designing does not always pertain to such concrete topics and can be done by any one on any level. We designed many things over the course of the semester in each exercise. TWO In 1011 I gathered a lot of tools that will be very helpful in 1012. First, I learned many different drawing techniques such as contour lines, tone, and gesture. I also experimented with different materials from pencil, to pen, to charcoal. I learned how to present information professionally and that the layout of information is crucial to display the process correctly. Finally, I learned from exercise 3 to abstract myself from looking at everything so literally. In 1012, I plan to pay special attention to the quality of my work. In the beginning of 1011 I was only first becoming acquainted with using Photoshop and Illustrator and building models. Now that I have had practice with those, I am going to strive to produce good quality models and drawings. THREE The role of the instructor is to be a guide throughout each exercise. They are there to point us in the right direction and comment on our work. The handout also serves as a guide but in a different way. It gives the basic outline of what is expected and leaves the actual process up to the student. The review process serves as a reflection and analysis of the work that has been completed throughout the exercise. It is important to hear the outside opinions of both fellow students and the jury because they may interpret your work in a different way than you may have expected. Your fellow students are useful tools throughout each exercise. They understand the assignments and are there to bounce ideas off of or to ask for help when needed. Finally, the studio space is a place to complete your work. Desks and computers are available for cfy students and it is a great environment to work in because there are always people in there to help you out and you are able to see what other people are working on. The studio learning experience is much different than being in the classroom. It is more hands on and creative. The lab and a job are also hands on experiences similar to studio, but the concepts that you learn are much different. FOUR Exercise 1 was meant to introduce us to all the tools we would need for the rest of the semester. We learned different drawing types, experimented with our materials, and learned how to look at the world critically. Then in exercise 2 we applied that new information to a concrete object. Over time, we used different filters to analyze and deconstruct our object. The tools from exercise 1 helped to complete exercise 2. In exercise 3 we combined our knowledge from the first two exercises. We used the tools from exercise 1 and we had to abstract a concrete drawing or model from exercise 3. My favorite exercise was exercise 3. I thought exercise 3 was going to be a horrible experience and I was not a fan of it in the beginning, but now, I understand the process and what was expected of the final result and I think it is a very interesting concept. Tyler Phipps 1. Everyone always says hindsight is 20-20 but I really think hindsight is more than that. By looking back you can see what you should have done, or what could have happened to make things go smoother or better. But I think hindsight is more than that. When looking back and realizing what you learned you can see where that will be used again someday. You can learn to apply those skills to your future and learn to critique yourself before you are in front of a jury about to be judged by others. I used to see drawings as something I had to do just because my teacher or boss wanted them done. I still see drawings as something that must be done because I am graded on them but now it is more. Drawings are a way to express what I see, what I think I see, and what others need to see. I have learned to look farther into a drawing to read the hidden details and not just see what is on the outside. 2. See response above. 3. The instructor was there to give guidance when needed and help explain the process of reading the drawings. The handouts gave an initial direction and where to start with the project and how it is expected to be presented. Pinups provided fellow feedback on how to improve for next time and how to better your work in the future. The reviews were less helpful because the reviewer always commented on what you should have done, or what you should go back and do. It is too late for that the work is being graded as you speak. The fellow studio mates were the most helpful of all individuals throughout this course. They were there to give me guidance when I needed it. They were they to cheer me up when I was down. They were the lifeline of the course. 4. Everything is summarized in the paragraphs above. Emily Ernst 1: In the beginning, people commented on the activities, rather than the ideas behind the exercise and the skills acquired. And as time went on the activities were mentioned, but the skills and the ideas were talked and thought about more. I know that my confidence has grown in leaps and bounds, like my skills in accomplishing tasks, and my understanding of the exercise and task set before me. a. before when I looked at a drawing, I tried to figure out what the artist tried to depict. But now, I look at how the artist did what they did, the methods, the media, if the artist used other methods and/or other medias, if the artist could improve the work, and if the artist could accomplish the same thing with less effort. b. Before when I explored, I thought like an engineer. I was very methodical, mathematical, and pre-thought. But now, I can start somewhere play around, and not afraid to go back, change course, or abandon the idea completely to accomplish the task or exercise. c. Before my analysis and inquiry skills were next to none and they were trained like an engineer. Now I can analyze works of art and objects, and make inquiries that at first might not go anywhere, but I also learned patience and perseverance. d. Before I used to design things that were pretty or abstract, now I learned to design things to be functional and artistic. 2: see above for what I will carry on to 1012 In 1012, I plan to pay special attention to the process of design, and making/representing something physically functional. As well as clearly showing what I’m trying to convey. 3: The role of the instructor is to of course give out exercises, but more importantly to give guidance and help to students to about the design process. The role of the project/exercise is to give the students the required skills necessary to survive in the design field. The role of the review process is to let students step back from their work and see it for another’s point of view, and to get students used to hearing rejection and how objective design is. The role of the inquiry book is a reference for the student to go back and remind themselves about different ways to see and convey ideas. The role of fellow students is to get an idea of how competitive the design world is and also to help each other along. The role of the studio space is to give students a place to work and an artistic atmosphere to cultivate their ideas. The studio learning experience is much like any other, except there are many other people going through the process with you at that moment. There is an instructor, skills to be learned, and tests/exercises to pass. 4: Exercise 1 was to each us the different ways to see, draw, and describe the world around us. It was first because those goals were the very basic and the ones used in the other exercises. Exercise 2 was to tech us about objects and parts, and how they are complex and simple at the same time. Exercise 3 was to teach us how to look at design and carry it further. It came last due to the fact that the skills and knowledge of the materials and ways to see and convey information were vital to the exercise. Also to look at design, knowledge of the object before hand is needed, knowledge of the object as a whole and its parts as well as how everything fits together and works as a whole. Exercise 1 was my favorite because I was fascinated with learning to see in a completely different way and conveying that information. I also liked learning about the materials and what they can do. Caitlin Fulmer After re-reading my reflections, it strikes me that I have learned a lot, mostly about how I perceive objects. The learning was focused on getting us to see the world in a different way. Each exercise built on the understandings of the previous one. I have definitely increased my confidence in my skills as an artist. I have also learned to look at the world in a different light. Previously I had not realized how much drawings and other representations can convey. This class has shown me that you can put a lot of information into a tiny space. Before this class I had not really thought about formulating and exploring ideas. Now I feel like an expert. The same thing goes for analysis and inquiry. I had only thought about designing from an aesthetic point of view before 1011. Now I understand a bit more about the practical part. 1011 taught me how to look at the world like a designer. It also helped me learn to use Photoshop and Illustrator. My freeform line drawings leave something to be desired. I will also focus on truly understanding what is being conveyed in a picture. The instructor is there to guide us and give us hints and insight into the assignment. The handout tells us what is expected of us. The review lets us know what we need to improve and what we have done well. The inquiry book lets us write down our thought process. Our fellow students offer moral support and ideas. The studio space gives us a good place to work. The studio experience allows you to get to know everyone, where the classroom can be more impersonal. Studio gives you practical experience, like an internship, but also gives a framework to use, like a classroom. Exercise 1 was about learning to see the world in different ways. It was also about learning to draw with different materials and in different styles. Exercise 2 was about learning to work with a partner and studying an object. This exercise also entailed learning new drawing styles and how to use Photoshop. Exercise 3 was about seeing an object in a new light and sharing your discoveries. Each exercise built upon the understanding of the previous one. My favorite was exercise 3 because there was so much freedom. Madlyn Bocinsky ONE When looking back, the first thing noticed is the amount of work that we have compiled over the semester. Not only has the amount of work grown considerably, but also our knowledge in different areas of design, modeling, analyzing, and drawing. When analyzing an object, we are able to dissect it down to it’s very core, gathering data on what it is made up of. From there, we can move on to creating ideas, which leads to models and drawings. The drawings eventually turn into new designs. TWO The analyzing techniques that I learned throughout Ex. 1 and Ex. 3 will be very helpful in the future, everything from the endless thumbnails to the dissection of an object. Also, the skills that I learned on photoshop and illustrator will be helpful in 1012. I will need to pay special attention to procedure when I get into 1012. THREE Instructor- guide us in the correct direction of the project, yet at the same time, take into account his/her thoughts on the project. Handout- Give written procedure Review- give critique on how we could have improved the entire process of exercise to get better results. Inquiry Books- Catalogue the work and the reflections of the work Fellow Students- give moral support so that we will not attack our instructors Studio Space- provide an open and lit space to work on projects. The studio learning experience is a good experience, mostly due to the class size. Having a small class versus a large lecture provides a learning environment that leads to a more successful class. FOUR Ex. 1- This is where we learned the basics for the class. We were able to use most of the newly acquired supplies, thus getting used to the texture and flow of the materials. Our drawing skills were improved greatly. Ex. 2- We began to move on to a more focus area of study. All of the skills from Ex.1 were combined and used in Ex. 2. We analyzed all aspects of an every-day object, studying it down to it’s very core. Our skills were added to when we learned how to use Photoshop. Ex. 3- Again, we move to a more focus area. Instead of looking into all aspects of an object, we chose one or two main ones, and expanded on the studied systems. All skills from Ex. 1 and Ex. 2 were used. Link to this Page
