b. Exercise 3 in general can really show how much my understanding of process plays out. I can well organize my thoughts and use a board to present process. c. Using Indesign was not even in my vocabulary as of summer 2007, and now I feel that I could teach anyone the basics. d. I can design a killer board that anyone would be proud to present after getting instruction on how one should be formatted. Two

Four The sequence of the exercises was designed to allow you to understand a certain skill and then build upon it for the next one. Ashlee Hatcher ONE The thing that strikes me most about rereading my exercise one reflection is how I became more confident with my skills and the class as a whole. In the beginning I had many insecurities about this class and the way that I would fit into it. I was essentially scared of the things that I could do, but even more of the things that I couldn’t do. Reading through those reflections I realized how much my skills have developed, but also how much I have developed as a person. The pattern that I have seen in that in each exercise, I vent about my frustrations, but the same thing that I am concerned about doing badly with is the same thing that I ended up using in the next exercise. I have definitely become more confident in my skills and as a person, and I credit a lot of this to the way that the exercises are set up and what they force me to do. Most of the time this is the exact thing that I need to develop at that time to be able to progress forward. I had no idea what to expect entering this class; therefore I really had no skills regarding drawing, modeling, exploring, analysis, and design. Now, I am actually able to create a decent drawing and even explore ideas far enough to develop a model that interprets the ideas into a 3-D visual. Just seen through exercise 3, I am now able to explore ideas and analyze on a much deeper level than I ever thought existed. My designing skills as a whole are the largest thing that has developed, I have learned how to make things draw others in and be visually appealing. TWO As stated above, I have made so many strides in skills and I credit all of this to 1011. I learned to trust myself and the ideas that I create. This will be the most important skill that is carried into 1012. Knowing my limits and surpassing them will be the best thing that can happen to me in 1012. I am sure the skills that I learned in 1011 are going to be the most essential items that I will carry in 1012. When moving on to 1012, I plan to pay special attention to the end result of the projects that I begin. I want my work to be the best that I can produce every time. My skills will be the most important thing to continue to develop as I move into the next semester. THREE The role of the instructor is to assist in the development of each student and to shower all of us with knowledge that they already have. The instructor is essentially the most important tool of this class. They get to see the change and development of every student and push them to develop further. The handout is the most concrete item of the class. These handouts are just the surface of what is meant to be developed. The handout helps to set boundaries, but it also stands to jumpstart ideas. The review process is the hardest part of the class, but it is also the most helpful. Having your work critiqued by someone you do not know while you stand there and defend it is one of the hardest thing to do, yet it is a skill that will be used in the rest of the working life. The inquiry book will be a tool that is used as long as I am in this profession. It is a visual representation of the strides that I have made and the way that my skills have developed over the past months and I will continue this along the path that they will down. My fellow students were most likely the best part of the class. They allowed me insight with many of the tasks and the exercises. Throughout the semester, we all developed a bond that was close enough for all of us to be honest and help each other out. They were basically the best critique of the entire class. The studio space is the best and worst parts of the class. During class time, I hated being in studio and having to sit and focus. After hours when I went back to work, I enjoyed it so much more. The studio was a lively space, where work and play interacted. I met so many people that I looked forward to seeing every night that I went in to work. It was like a special network of sleep deprived kids that fed off of each other. Without the studio space, these bonds would have never been made. FOUR The first exercise was essential in developing the basic skills that are needed for anything in this class. The second exercise used the skills developed in the first and practiced applying them to something that was solid and tangible. The third took these skills and pushed the boundaries of imagination. As a whole, the exercises fed off of each other and attempted to teach us specific ways to use our brains and use the skills. It showed how things that you learn all interrelate. My favorite exercise is the first one. It was my essential starting point. I have seen such a difference in my work and the confidence that I have in the skills that I have. Before this, I was unaware of the work that I am able to develop. Katherine Kelenfy One Looking back at all of my reflections, I definitely see that for each project there was this initial apprehension followed by a later joy in understanding. There is always that aspect of everything coming together and making sense after the fact. In each project there was always this mental or creative block that I had to work through as well. I’m definitely much more confident in my skills than I was when I first came to the studio. I also have discovered to work through mental blocks by just working through it and drawing whatever comes to mind. It helps. Since the beginning of studio, I’ve broken away from using simply drawings to represent ideas. I’ve honed my modeling skills a bit. I love Photoshop. Two The most of what I will carry away from 1011 is the “learning to see” aspect. This is not only important for creating accurate representation of objects, but also taking apart a reworking what you really see and perhaps seeing the future of an object. This helps you to see things that aren’t there yet, which is what I’d like to carry on to 1012. Three The instructor is there to help pull ideas out of our minds and steer us in the right direction of thinking. The briefs are there to serve as guidelines for the project (which in certain circumstances don’t necessarily have to be strictly adhered to). The review process is a good way to receive feedback and constructive criticism so that we can grow and develop as architecture students, without this process we’d just be stuck in a loop with no ideas of where to go. The inquiry books are there to serve as a log of our thought processes and also help us to map out our projects. Fellow student are always good to have around for moral support and they can also offer some more immediate feedback. And its also good just to have someone to bounce ideas off of. The studio space provides a good working environment. As a college student, it’s difficult to find a good work space, the studio area reeks of productivity and makes you want to work, at least more so than sitting in a cramped dorm room. Four The first exercise started us off with just “seeing” and really focusing in on what is actually present in a scene or object. The second exercise took this aspect and then allowed us to analyze and pick apart what we see. Finally, the third exercise had us take what we analyzed and then try to see what could become of it. The second exercise was my personal favorite, I enjoyed the analytical process and break down of the object, it was quite intriguing. Juliana Watkins One What strikes me as worth noting on is how after each exercise I was still taking in from what I learned in that exercise and building on from it. The patterns that I discerned were that we took lessons learned and built up from them and onto the next exercise. I did discern a cumulative growth in learning, which I will continue to take me into the next semester. The change that occurred in the way I thought in relation to models and drawing was that I could take what I had done, look at it subjectively, and improve on it. Before hand, I way I formulated ideas was different. Now I look at everything with a creative and intuitive perspective. As for analysis, I learned to look at things with a critical eye and take everything in. As for designing, I was able to combine all these things and put them together and create something new that I would not have been able to do with out this learning process. Two The learning that I will carry on with me will be how to look at something in a new way, build on it, and design something new. I plan to pay special attention to the process of designing in 1012. Three The instructor was there to explain new concept, ideas, designs, and help the students create new ideas and improve on them. The handout was there to give the students instructions as what they needed in a specific project. The review process was there to let us explain how we did something and why and also to help us improve on them and into the next project. The inquiry book was there to allow students to explore ideas, cumulate all their work, and set up plans for further exploration. The roles of the other students included learning together and helping each other with ideas. The studio space role was to provide an environment were everyone could be together, bounce ideas off each other, and ask questions when needed. Four The first exercise’s goal was to look at something and create it for what it was, the second exercise was to analysis something and understand it on multiple levels, and the third lesson was to take all these things and create them into something new. They played out in the sequence in they did so the students could learn from them. My favorite one was the first exercise because we were able to explore drawing the most. Tami King Part One: Looking back at all the exercises, I remember how easy exercise one was for me. I had taken art classes in high school and felt like studio was going to be just an extension of those classes. I felt like I breezed through the beginning exercises and had little difficulty with the final projects. I actually enjoyed doing them since they were so easy, but I actually spent time on them. Exercise two helped me look at things in a different and more quizzical way. I was forced to ask questions and then find answers. I pulled apart things to learn about them further. Hindsight, it’s changed how I look at things, even now. I find myself looking at mold lines in plastics and looking for imperfections in items that were mass produced. A pattern in the three exercises is that I used what I learned in the previous exercise in the new one. The first exercise I focused on the techniques that I had brought with me to studio. The more I used them in the other exercises, the better my skills have gotten. As mentioned above, I now look at things in a new light because of exercise two. Exercise three felt like an extension of exercise two to me so I just feel like it enforced my new skill of looking, however, it did provoke a little bit of silliness and creativity in me. Before 1011, I took drawing as something I would enjoy, something artistic. I now have the knowledge and skills to make technical drawings like measure drawings and AXO drawings. I never made models before 1011 and had a bad connotation with them. I now realize how informative and helpful they can be to any project. The ideas about the process of investigation have changed a little since now I just look longer, harder, and closer to pick up more information that I would have missed before 1011. I still feel like I lack confidence in exploring my ideas, though. Even though I don’t explore my ideas, I know that it is important to have ideas and ask questions. Questions lead to answers which lead to more information. My thoughts on designing have gotten a little lighter. I was intimidated by it before 1011, but now I feel more comfortable with the idea of designing. Part Two: In 1011, I think I will carry over my new skills with investigation and my technique. I can now see the details and translate them onto paper. I plan on being more adventurous with my ideas and I’ll try to be more open about my ideas and be more willing to let them go where they want to. Part Three: The instructor in 1011 was there for critique, fresh ideas, a new point of view, a more professional point of view, inspiration when you were stuck, and an all over guide for the class. Since we were able to work on our stuff freely, it was nice to have someone come and give us a new way of looking at things. The handouts were like the set requirements or rules for each project. They provided examples and ways to go about doing the project, as well as information about the project itself. The review is something to prepare us for having people critique our work from a very professional view. It also teaches us how to present our work in front of people, and how to present it effectively. The pinup lets us see the project as a whole since we are working on it at such a close range. We can step back and see the whole picture and see how they pieces of the project interact and support each other. It’s also a good way to plan layouts and to see what works next to each other and what doesn’t. The inquiry book is a good way to keep track of everything that was done in class. It serves as a pool of information and ideas that can lead to inspiration later. The students in class were also sources of inspiration as well as critique. They also became friends on those long studio nights. The studio room in itself became somewhere I could go to work for long periods of time. I associated it with work and went there sometimes to work on other things besides studio projects. It provided a good environment that caused me to associate it with studying and hard work. The studio experience is very hands on where in lectures you just take notes. Some people work better if they can actually do it with their hands. Since you are more involved in studio, it can make it more enjoyable than just listening to a lecture. It could be likened to a job, especially one in design since I can see a lot of drawing and brainstorming happening in both. Part Four: This is why I think these three exercises are in this order: Exercise one taught you your materials and how to see things physically. Exercise two taught you how to look differently, interpret what these physical information meant and how to investigate them. Finally, exercise three wanted you to keep these things you’ve learned in mind, but to take it a step further by throwing in the creativity factor. Once you have the technical information and how to translate it onto paper, you can get creative. My favorite was exercise one because I had so much fun with it. The charcoal medium proved to be very useful in the following exercises. The final project with the light play was very fun for me since I was so interested in the reflections. Even though the whole exercise was just about the basics, I felt like it gave me more tools for the future classes than the other ones did. Anu Pillai One As I look back on 1011 I realize how far I have come from the beginning. In the beginning of the year I was very inexperienced on many of the things we did and were expected to do in studio and now I have learned all of the tasks that I once thought I would never be able to do. I followed a very distinct learning pattern during the three exercises. I would begin each exercise confused and not exactly understanding the assignment. Then I would get help from my instructor to help me understand what I was supposed to be doing with the assignment. Finally I would work for a long stretch and the concept would click. I feel that learning this way has helped me understand the concepts the instructors were trying to teach in 1011 and made me gain confidence in my abilities; however, this learning pattern hindered my project development because I spent quite a bit of time to fully grasp the concept behind the exercise. My thinking process in relation to drawing, modeling, analysis, inquiry, exploring, and designing have been greatly enhanced through 1011. I know I have learned to think in a completely different way post 1011. Two I plan to carry my new way of thinking into 1012 and use this skill to continue to enhance my knowledge next semester. Three The instructor helped guide us through the project by giving us feedback and providing help when necessary. The brief was a guideline to how we should complete the project and what the requirements of the assignment were. The review was the “exam” of our assignment where we presented our final product. The inquiry book was a journal or scrapbook that kept all of our work and process work. My fellow students became friends and supporting factors during the long hours spent in studio. They also helped and gave feedback. The studio became home. Studio is one of the most effective hands on learning experiences I have ever been a part of because it combines many factors that are desirable and difficult. Four The sequence in which we completed the exercises makes sense to me because the skills learned in each exercise were necessary to complete the next exercise. My favorite exercise was Exercise One because that was the exercise where I created projects that I did not know I had the skills to create. Despite whether or not my work was impressive to others, I impressed myself with exercise one. Andrew Burton One Looking back at exercise one I thought it was a bit of an annoyance at the time, and I did not really see the point of doing blind line contours at the time, but now I see that those specifically and all of the techniques learned in Ex. 1 are very useful in other areas as well. I have used almost all of them in one form or another in al of the exercises since then. I cannot discern any patterns of learning other than maybe that I did not see the point to any of the exercises when we began each one but in the end I saw why we had done them and I came away with a new set of knowledge. Over all I defiantly see a growth over the semester. Some of the work that I have produced, I would hove not even have dreamed of doing when I entered this class. Over the course of 1011 I have learned the purpose of using different mediums such as modeling, and drawing to display different ideas in a given project. I have also learned a little bit about the process of formulating and exploring ideas though I feel that his was an area that I had a pretty good grasp on in the beginning. As far as analysis and inquiry I feel that before 1011 I would have never though about using drawing techniques as a form of analysis which is something that has defiantly changed during this course. Designing is not something that I feel I have really looked at all this semester other than looking at how to layout my boards and formulate experiments to better understand objects. As far as designing new products or things I do not feel that 1011 helped me at all. Two I think I will carry forward the progress that I have made in the area of using graphical representations to convey ideas. In 1012 I have heard rumors that a lot of time is spent doing drafting, which is something that interests me and I feel will actually be relevant to my future in Building Construction, so I will take extra care to look at that area of study. Three The instructor acted as a guide helping you to find you way through the assignments. The projects briefs were like maps that gave you just enough information to get started but not enough to inhibit your own interpretation. Reviews were ways to help you find your way even more, they were simply times when outside people could come in and give you objective opinions on your work. The inquiry book was a journal that helped keep track of your investigations in a graphical and verbal way. My fellow student were in the same place I was in most of the time but they helped by contributing ideas to each others work which defiantly made me look at things differently and gave me new directions to explore. The studio space gave me all of the resources necessary to make progress on the journey of exploration. The studio was nothing like any other learning setting I have been exposed to. It gave me the opportunity to not only create but to take advantage of my classmates to help me through things that I could not figure out. It used a group atmosphere to both motivate and facilitate learning. Four Exercise 1’s goal was to give us a group of skills that we could use in the following exercise and further down the road. It acted as a studio orientation Exercise 2 helped us to get our feet wet. It made us use the tools that we learned in a constructive fashion. Exercise 3 took all the things that we had learned in exercises 1 and 2 and made us use them to create something completely new. At the same time it stretched us to be creative, something that does not come easily for everyone. David Hardy One: The most notable thing that I think I learned in exercise one was fact that I had to relearn everything that I knew about drawing. This was the biggest obstacle that I had to overcome in the common first year program. I came out of high school thinking that I thought I knew how to draw, but then I was given the assignments in exercise one and I realized that while I knew how to draw, it was not the way the college of architecture wanted to me to draw or think. The process of learning how to review my peers’ work also really helped me in exercise one. By reviewing others work we point out things that we may not normally see in our own work. The most notable thing that I learned in exercise two was how to look at any given object through the four filters that we learned to use in the exercise. By using these filters we gain a better understanding of any thing that we are studying. All of the techniques that we learned in exercise one and two really peaked in exercise three. All of the exercise three competition boards were a climax of everything that we learned this semester. When you look at the boards you can see elements and techniques that we learned throughout the semester. Two: The things that I learned in 1011 that I think will be imperative for 1012 are the filters from exercise two, looking at the object and seeing how light reflects off of it, and the objects contour lines. All of these don’t have to be used to look at a simple object instead we can look at large scale scenes and buildings. By using these filters and techniques we can gain a better understanding of what we are studying. I plan to pay special attention to an object or building’s precedents. History is one of the most important things that we need to understand. By understanding history we gain an understanding of our current situation, and why things are the way that they are. Three: The instructor and the brief can be grouped together because they both serve as a guideline for us students to follow. However, the instructor needs to be signaled out because he/she clarifies what we have done wrong, and what we can improve on. The instructor also helps to explain parts of the brief that may seem confusing. The review process and the inquiry book help us to look closely at our work and understand what we have done. It helps to learn how to recognize flaws in our work. I think that one of the most underused tools in the common first year is our fellow students. Getting other students to look at our work can point out flaws that we may not have noticed before. The studio space is an eclectic environment. It serves as a mosh pit of ideas for the exercise requirements and drawings. Studio is hard to describe to a student of another major. There is nothing else like it at Tech. I think that studio is one of the hardest classes at Tech because of the time commitment. With that being said I did enjoy the smaller sections and getting to know the professor on a personal basis. Four: Exercise one served as a series of trail and error drawings we did so many different types of drawings and many versions of these drawings. By doing so many different drawings we eventually became comfortable with these drawings. In exercise two we learned how to use different filters to analyze an object and look at it in many different ways. Exercise three took everything that we had learned and expanded upon it. We took drawings from exercise two and used them to create something entirely new. I really enjoyed exercise two because I really learned how to analyze an object. I know pick up an object and think about how it was made, no matter how much I would like not to. I liked this exercise because I think that it will help me to better understand assignments and objects in the future. Elizabeth Seiz ONE One thing that strikes me as worth noting is how much I loved exercise 1. I had fun with it and enjoyed it a lot. It was exciting to have that first review and get feedback. Another thing worth noting is how much I have learned as far as vocabulary as well as skills such as computer skills, drawing skills, and modeling skills. I can now feel comfortable doing all of these things. Patterns that I can see in my learning in each exercise are computer skills and presenting skills. Each presentation has been different and hat have each taught me something different about myself and my work. Yes, I discern a cumulative growth in learning in myself. I am confident in my work and myself. I feel as if I can speak about mine and others work intelligently. Pre 1011 I did a substantial amount of artwork on my own but it was not very structured. Post 1011 I feel as if I have expanded on my drawing skills in a new fashion. I feel as if I look at art and more structured drawings differently. Pre 1011 I had never really formulated propositions and explored ideas through imagery. However, post 1011 I I think about such things all the time. I find myself admoring the reflections in glass and how things are made as well as how you could riff things. I also feel as if I could conduct these analysis and inquiries successfully. Pre 1011 I felt like I could never design anything much less on the computer but now I know I can and I am comfortable in doing so. TWO In 1011 I learned much more about thinking and how to learn than I did about drawing. I will take my new drawing skills with me into 1012 as well as my new thinking style. In 1012 I plan to pay special attention to everyone else’s work and ideas on my own work. I feel there is a lot to be learned from others and this sort of interaction and feedback is essential to the learning process and it enhances everyone’s work and inspires new ideas. THREE Think back through the 3 exercises and tell us what are the 'roles' of EACH of the following in the studio process: the instructor: To give feedback and answer questions when needed the project or exercise brief/handout: To give a foundation for the assignment at hand. The students must take it upon themselves to expand upon it. the review process (pinup, final jury): To give constructive criticism and feedback. This information is to be taken into the next assignments as a learning tool. the inquiry book: A record of work and ideas. It is also a tool to be used often and referenced upon. your fellow students: To give feedback, encouragement and support. the studio space itself: A learning environment where people get together to share ideas and work with one another. Studio learning experience is like… The studio learning experience is a lot like a job or an internship. You never stop learning through it and your always getting feedback. You have to present your ideas and then alter your work if needed according to the constructive criticism. It is like a seminar and classroom in that there is a teacher and learning time and place. It is like a workshop because people are always working and making new products such as drawings and models. End ELizabeth Seiz Danielle McCurdy ONE When looking back over my reflections, I realized how far I’ve come with design on the computer and using my studio supplies, especially charcoal. In each exercise, certain lessons were revisited and each exercise built off of the next. I feel like I have grown greatly over this past semester, and the ways I think about new ideas in design, sketching, and modeling has shocked me as I reflect from pre-1011 to post-1011. TWO I will take the skills I have learned in not only managing my time, but also skills in drawing and design that will definitely benefit me for next semester. I will need to pay more attention to the functions of the adobe programs next semester, so that I can get a better grasp of design. THREE The instructor and brief are their as guides to direct in us in each exercise. The review process and our inquiry books are here to help us critique and learn from the work we have done. Lastly, my fellow students and the studio space itself is here to promote learning in an interactive way. The studio is different from thea classroom or job because it is interactive. The studio provides the hand on learning one finds at a lab, tutorial, or internship. End: Danielle McCurdy Chris Zajac's Exit Reflection 1) As I reread the three reflections I have done, I realize how far I have come in understanding visual analysis and using techniques to portray my ideas. I see how each exercise built on the ideas and concepts of the previous one. For example, in the beginning of exercise one we learned all the techniques and throughout the first exercise we got to practice these techniques through the glass and drape studies. Exercise two we used are new found skill to analyze a subject in my case some pliers. After an in depth analysis exercise three led us to take the ideas and stretch and change them into something completely different. By removing one of the previous steps the entire project could not work. I also feel that through practice the reviews got easier and I could tailor what to say in a way that the reviewers would understand my project better. Before 1011 my drawing was very sketchy. I have been drawing and painting my entire life and I developed a very sketchy style. After 1060 my line drawings became more contour then sketchy. I am also much more organized in how I process and form ideas. Graphical design is also much easier. I have through practice and trial and error gotten a taste for what looks good and how to create a balanced and attractive setup. 2) I believe that the techniques of portraying my ideas on paper will develop and carry over into 1012. I will always develop my Photoshop and Illustrator skills as they are essential tools to the architect. I will pay special attention to my quality of work as I really want to make an impression on my professors and classmates. To do this I need to improve my graphical design skills. 3a) The instructor serves as a teacher of new techniques and a guider that will show you the path to your finished product. They also serve as an educated critique that will give constructive criticism to your work. The project exercise brief serves as a guide line to what goals are expected to be accomplished in each exercise. They also give examples of work done in the past to give an idea of how the exercise works. The review process serves as motivation to getting all your work done in time and to an exceptional quality. It also serves as a reflection to make sure you understand your work. And be able to present it to an audiance. The inquiry book is a summary of your accomplishments so far as an architecture student. Your fellow students serve as a resource to help you understand where you are going with your project in comparison with others. They are also good critiques. The studio space serves as a prison for the architecture student. Since a majority of the work has to be done in this area, students are often stuck working endlessly into the night. 3b) The studio is a much more hands on learning experience than the classroom. You learn through trial and error and do all your work in the room. You don’t go to math classroom after hours to do your calculus homework. 4) The first exercise was a learning experience to teach you the techniques of portraying your ideas. We learned through practice and became comfortable with the tools provided to us. Exercise two was focused at teaching us analysis of a subject. We used the techniques from exercise two to completely break down and understand our subject. Exercise three took the ideas from exercise two and stretched them into something completely new and unique. This exercise was my favorite because it was very unconstrained and I had the freedom to take my ideas on a walk and go in my own direction. No path could be wrong and no path is better than another as long as they are equally developed and the process is logical. Matt Hoots response 1011 exit reflection I came into this class with very little understanding about how to draw. I have drawn before and created models but not as an assignment. I was able to see things differently as we had to follow each assignment. The most relevant one for me is when we started to deal with tone in 1.4 and 1.5. The main skills that I have now that I did not fully develop before the class are the concept of the diagram and formatting. The main skill that I plan to carry forward in to 1012 is layout. As we have to do a plan, elevation and section of the object I saw the importance of a rough layout before I dove into the to assignment. Relavence in regards to each of the following as I progressed through 1011: • The instructor- it is very important to have someone to guide you along and give you feedback based on experience. Our instructor was able to pull from their professional experience and give us relevant feedback to point us in the right direction. When ever I took the advice of the instructor the project seemed to work out better and clarity was brought to the details of the assignment. • The project or exercise brief/handout – It was good to have a guide to give us direction within the assignment. I found this especially helpful with assignments 1.1-1.5 since I had no basis to go off. • The review process (pinup, final jury) – It was very helpful to pin the work up to see how it looks in relation to other work and in relation to the whole process. I started pining up at home with things that I do and at the office with the projects that I am working on. • The inquiry book – I feel that the uncooked version was very helpful The cooked version was not as helpful to me but was helpful in describing my thought process to others that were reviewing my work. • Your fellow students – I took advantage of the knowledge and skills that my fellow classmates brought to the class. One classmate answered my question of when do I have enough thumbnails with- keeping drawing until you understand all of the details of the subject. I too their advice I and I did well. • The studio space itself – this ties in with the students. While we were cramped in one corner and I did not like working in that space, it was nice to work in other parts of the studio where the desks were positioned more favorably. It would be nice to have the benefit of immediate feedback form your peers at the same time having more room to work. FOUR I will try to be as honest as possible about the process. While I see the benefit of each individual exercise and the skills that were learned from each one, the whole process was a bit frustrating. For example, in conversation, there are two ways that people tend to communicate. 1. The make a point and them spend a little time elaborating with supporting evidence. 2. Conversely, some people tend to ramble and them eventually clarity comes afloat after much ambiguity. I felt like I was being subject to a torturous conversation as the exercises were handed out. I made it a personal challenge to try and figure out the puzzle of what the next step was going to be before it was assigned so I could better prepare the last step and not waste any effort. Also, given my career that was not put on hold to go to school, not have a syllabus with due dates and clarity about what the assignments were going to be at the beginning of the semester I was not able to give good attention to my other obligations. I made many sacrifices for some assignments that I barely got a B+ on and I truly feel that I wasted my time on some of them. I did learn a lot in the class and I tried to take advantage of all of the resources and tools that were given to us. Unfortunately, the strain that this class has put on my family, my business, and me is causing me to question taking 1012. I have no idea what to expect. 1011 definitely was not sold to me correctly and not having anything to look at on the web to see what 1012 will look like I am not able to continue down this CFY path until I get things a little better under control at work given the current economic environment. Thanks for having me back. Christopher Hamby ONE In retrospect, I realize that I had no idea what to expect from COA 1011. I learned much more than I expected from the beginning, and much more about design and creativity than merely skills with art supplies or words. The pattern seems to fall where the class would begin to understand something when suddenly all the rules were completely changed and we were placed upon a new track of learning. I could definitely see a trend in learning of changing from attempting to complete and assignment to attempting to learn and grow as I created the best assignment I could think of. Throughout the course, I have learned to re-think each process, and ensure it is worth doing before I begin. Each drawing is well thought out and planned, while ideas a formulated first, and then expanded upon, rather than just hoping they end well. My analysis has changed from bullet point to in depth thinking while I hope my entire process of design has been consistent with these ideas. TWO I believe one of the most important pieces of knowledge that will pass from 1011 to 1012 is the ability to use all the new and helpful computer programs. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Corell Painter have been necessary to build and complete assignments to the degree of accuracy I wanted. I hope to retain my ability to carefully craft different line qualities and maintain the level of creativity required to succeed in 1011. I plan to pay more attention to other classmates in 1012, because I believe my greatest fault was not looking around to gather ideas and information from everyone else whom was learning beside me. THREE It seemed in the beginning of each new exercise, our instructor was there to guide and teach us about the new things involved but as we gained knowledge, we were only kept on track and left to explore our own ideas. The handout were very similar in that they only explained the beginnings of each exercise and we were left to build our own finished product, which could be very different from every else's. Reviews were great ways to learn from the experienced, and as we completed more reviews, they became less unnerving, and more of a learning process, as they were intended to be. The inquiry book was a good bookmark to the level of knowledge we had obtained. It seemed to remind us where we were in each exercise, and what other work needed to be completed in order to complement the book. As stated before, I believe fellow studio students were the greatest sources of aid in which I did not consistently utilize. The studio space itself was a unique place to learn because of the constant changing of environment, people, and surroundings to learn from. The studio is a unique learning experience somewhere between classroom and lab on the structured end, and internship and job on the free end. It seems that studio is a very advanced way to learn in comparison to common tutorials. FOUR The goal for exercise one was to understand slowly how to look at an object, and how to make decisions based on better or worse styles of looking. We were forced to learn new mediums, and comprehend new ideas, not yet introduced to us. Exercise 1 was an introduction into the manner of thinking in Studio. Exercise 2 began the same way with sustained looking, but we began gathering knowledge about a specific object. We used clues from our investigations to make inferences about different aspects of the object. Exercise 3 jumped right off with an extension to Exercise 2. The point was to culminate all our way of knowledge before, and build our own unique riffs and story to the object that someone else might not understand. We were allowed a great deal of freedom, and this made it my favorite exercise. being allowed to interpret with no rules or boundaries brought a wealth of wild ideas, and it was fun to watch students around build and formulate new ideas on curious and interesting ideas. _ Jill Exley – 1011 Reflection ONE • The only thing that strikes me as I reread my reflections is how much I liked exercise three because I wrote so much more than I did for the other reflections and you can really tell just by reading the three over again. • A pattern that I notice from my reflections and the learning process is that I also learned something about ‘seeing’ and the details of the project that I was working on. • I believe that I learned so much from this fall studio experience and also gained a ton of confidence in, not only my artistic abilities, but also in my designing skills on the computer with specific programs. I also gained a lot of knowledge just from thinking in a new way. • My drawings have improved since pre-1011, especially my charcoal drawings because I used to suck at those. And wow, my model making abilities have improved from nothing, literally, because I had never made a model before and then in exercise three I made what I like to think of as an amazing model. The way that I formulate new ideas has also changed because even though I was creative pre-1011 now that I have done through studio I know how to look at an object and understand it or think of new crazy and abstract ways to think of things. My designing skills have also improved significantly from pre-1011. I went from not knowing a thing about designing something to winning second place in the CFY competition. TWO • The ‘learning’ that I gained from 1011 that I will take with me to 1012 will be everything! I have learned so much. From using different mediums, making models, seeing things differently, thinking abstractly, and to designing amazing final products on projects will be used in 1012. • In 1012 I will pay special attention to my peers. This is because I don’t think that I did enough of this in 1011. I would see people doing something amazing on a program on the computer, but I was too shy to ask how they were doing it. Or someone with an amazing model, but too shy to ask how. Towards the end of the semester I started to look at others projects and formulate ideas of my own from theirs and also began to ask questions to my peers. THREE Think back through the 3 exercises and tell us what are the 'roles' of EACH of the following in the studio process: • The instructor plays the major role in the studio class. He/she teaches the students everything they need to know about the projects and how to go about doing them. I am so lucky to have Dan Nemec as my instructor because I feel like he taught my class well and we all learned everything we needed to move on to 1012 from him. • The exercise handouts and prompts helped a lot because sometimes I would forget part of the assignment or feel that something was missing and I could just look back at the prompt and even find more things that I would need to fix on my projects. • The review process is significant because it gives you an idea of what outsiders think of your work. Not just your instructor or your peers. • The inquiry book will help when you need to look back and see something from one of your previous chapters that you can use in the future or just to show off your amazing work. • Your peers play a major role as well because they are with you in class and pulling the all-nighters with us. We can teach each other things and with different instructors and different ideas coming from everybody’s minds it can help expand your projects to a whole new level. • The studio space was … different. It was almost always crowded and messy. People would be playing their music too loudly and the computers were always taken. I didn’t really like the studio all that much, but I have learned to get used to it. FOUR I believe that the three exercises had to unfold in the order given or else the process would have made no sense at all. Exercise one taught us all about the different mediums that we would be using in the future. It taught us simply how to see different and use our minds in multiple ways to create artwork. We learned simple drawing ideas and procedures to start off the semester. These observations helped in numerous ways with the other two exercises. Exercise two taught us about model making and using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. These skills will be VERY useful in the future. Exercise two also taught us about looking at objects and researching everything thing there is to know about it, whether that meant to research the materials or take the object apart. Exercise three used all of those skills from exercise one and two and taught us to be abstract with our ideas and create something totally different from what we started with. My favorite was definitely exercise three because I loved my final product and I had fun while doing it. Although, at first it was very frustrating to create the initial riff after I got the idea of riffing I loved it. I made mistakes along the way, but I believe that was part of the process because in order to design something you have to make unsuccessful models and drawings to create the perfect end result. I also liked the idea of having a competition between all of the boards. Taylor Walters Exit Reflection for 1011 ONE To help you take stock, please review your reflection postings for exercises 1, 2, and 3. Re-read yours (and others' as well, if you want) in one sitting. Then respond to the following: • As you re-read them now – with the advantage of distance, experience, and hindsight – what strikes you as worth noting and commenting upon? o What strikes me as the most interesting thing to note upon is my Exercise one review. I learned so much in exercise one that influenced me in the next two exercises. I learned how to focus my time and I also learned how to use line weight and thumbnails to create a better image. • Are there any patterns that you can discern in the learning that occurred in each exercise? o The first exercise seemed more of an introduction to most of the skills we would be using throughout the semester, as well as a lot of time consuming work to teach us how to really manage our time. The second exercise was an introduction to structure and how to analyze things: geometries, proportions, analogs and precedents, etc. Finally, exercise three was basically up to the individual, it was to see how you could take your skills from earlier in the year and develop your little ideas into a strong idea. • Do you discern a cumulative growth in learning (in confidence, in skills, in understanding etc.), in yourself? o I definitely can discern a growth in my confidence in front of reviewers and also in my skills as a whole. I have also grown in my skills on the computer: indesign, photoshop, and illustrator. • Can you characterize the change, from pre 1011 to post-1011, that has occurred in the way you think/thought about: a) drawings, modelling and other types of representations; b) the process of formulating and exploring ideas; c) analysis and inquiry; d) designing. o Before 1011 I thought studio was a lot of all-nighters and a lot of work, and beyond that I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. Post 1011 I realized that the all-nighters are only for people with bad time-management and I also realized that it is a lot of work, but you have to make it fun. Another realization that came to me is that you have to try and document things as you go, not just all in one time. TWO In order to encourage you to play an active part in your own learning, we would like you to think about and respond to the following: • Identify the 'learning' in 1011 that you think you will carry forward to 1012 o I hope to carry on my learning in studio as far as utility of supplies go and also in the computer lab, learning to use photoshop and illustrator better. • What do you plan to pay special attention to in 1012? o In 1012 I really plan to use constructive criticism to my advantage and also do more work for studio so my instructor will have more feedback for me. THREE Two questions about the studio workshop process. Think back through the 3 exercises and tell us what are the 'roles' of EACH of the following in the studio process: • the instructor o His job is to give us criticism and guide us through the briefs. He is also responsible for answering any questions we have, or helping us to find the answer. • the project or exercise brief/handout o The brief is a blueprint for our ideas, basically giving us a layout on what we can do and what we have to accomplish for the exercise. • the review process (pinup, final jury) o The review process is practice for us, so that in the future when we show our ideas to a real jury or board of reviewers we will have some semblance on what is going on. They are also their to give us constructive criticism on how to form our ideas better. • the inquiry book o The inquiry book is just for the instructor to get a better look into our ideas. It is also for us to be able to go back and look at where we got our ideas from. • your fellow students o Tthe fellow students help each other out when we need to answer a question or get information, but they are also their to challenge us to do better and force us to work harder. • the studio space itself o The studio space itself is our spot to think, brainstorm , it is also a spot for us to get ideas from other students. How would you describe the studio learning experience compared to other learning situations and experiences: for example the classroom, the seminar, the lab, the workshop, the tutorial, the internship, the job. I like the studio learning experience the best because the studio is more of free reign for the student. I also have only experienced a few of the above topics, so so far, the studio is my favorite learning experience. FOUR We would like you to reflect back over the semester and see if you can make sense of the three exercises and the sequence in which they unfolded. Briefly characterize what you think were the pedagogical goals for each and why they played out in the sequence that they did. Then tell us which was your favorite and why. This question seems really similar to the question in the first part of the 1011 exit reflection so I am just going to re-post my answer and elaborate a bit more. The first exercise seemed more of an introduction to most of the skills we would be using throughout the semester, as well as a lot of time consuming work to teach us how to really manage our time. The second exercise was an introduction to structure and how to analyze things: geometries, proportions, analogs and precedents, etc. Finally, exercise three was basically up to the individual, it was to see how you could take your skills from earlier in the year and develop your little ideas into a strong idea. Finally, my favorite exercise was exercise one because I learned the most and it was the biggest surprise for me as to all of the exercises. Plus. I really believe I did some of my best work this year towards the end of exercise one, with the light charcoals and all. Also, I would recommend use teaching goals instead of pedagogical goals because it seems to help the sentence flow better and it is also a word that is more commonly spoken. Link to this Page
