COA 1060 INTRODUCTION TO THE DESIGNED AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT
COURSE OVERVIEW


Broader Goals
  • Foster a critical curiosity about the designed and built environment (DBE) at large
  • Foster an informed engagement with one's surroundings

  • Foster an awareness of the relationship between: the formal and the social; design and research; design and its publics; design and public life/public space; professional practice and civic values
  • Provide an introduction to the changing physical, social, economic, and political landscape of the American city and Atlanta in particular

  • Introduce issues in the DBE disciplines and professions through the Academic Programs and Research Centers in the COA
  • Provide disciplinary frameworks and tools to help engage and understand the relationship between physical and social conditions in the designed and built environment

  • Introduce the three COA undergraduate programs and their related disciplines and professions
  • Provide a cross-disciplinary perspective on what each discipline/profession does and on the overlaps and connections between them

Specific Goals
  • Critical listening, thinking, looking: Learning to ask good questions of specific material. (Lecture and Reading Summaries; Midterm Exam)
  • Analysis and Synthesis: Learning to marshall research and shape an argument. (Essay on Fifth Street)
  • Data Compilation and Classification: Learning library research and organization skills. (Collaborative Research Project: Time Stamps)
  • Reflection and Speculation: Learning to propose and formulate larger questions. (Final Exam)

Schedule
Weekly lectures by invited faculty, professionals, and students. Bi-weekly small-group discussions
Participation in preceptorial discussions is 10% of the final grade

Requirements

1. Summaries
Summaries of lecture presentations and readings associated with each class. Assignments will be commented upon and graded within two weeks of posting
Students are expected to complete the assignment, on their own, and post it on their ASSIGNMENTS page, by the end of the day of the assignment date
6 Assignments at 3% each. Your assignment with the highest grade will be counted twice
21% of the final grade

2. Research Project
Research for the Research Project will draw on library sources, on-line databases, and empirical study and observation. The Research Project will be co-ordinated by each GTA. Students will turn progress drafts before the final version of the Research Project is due. The drafts will account for 50% of the Research Project grade. Failure to turn in drafts will result in a grade of F for the Research Project. Work to be completed in groups
30 % of the final grade

3. Essay
Cudda Wudda Shudda: An Essay on 'Fifth Street'. Essay draws upon lectures, significant body of readings and empirical observation to make sense of the evolving experiment that is 'Fifth Street'
20 % of the final grade

4. Midterm and Final Exams
Midterm Exam: Closed-book written exams based on materials covered in the readings and the lectures
Final Exam: Take-home question written in-class

Midterm Exam: 10 % of the final grade
Final Exam: 12% of the final grade

Class Requirements
  • ALL PAGERS AND CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF FOR THE DURATION OF THE CLASS. Please get into the habit of turning off cell phones and pagers before entering the auditorium
  • Please do not talk during class. The acoustics of the auditorium make even whispering audible
  • No food or drink allowed in the auditorium
  • Attendance is not only required but necessary for doing well in class
  • The midterm and final exams will draw from the readings as well as from material presented during lectures. It is a good idea to take good notes during lectures
  • We may take attendance periodically. Missing more than 2 classes will automatically result in a grade penalty. Leaving early, or arriving late, will be counted as an absence
  • All excused absences need to be cleared in advance with the instructors or the TAs. Notify the graduate teaching assistants by email. Email addresses are posted on the GTA pages on cooldaze
  • Missing class for health reasons requires a note from a medical practitioner
  • Missing class will affect your performance on the Final Exam

Summaries and Other Short Assignments
  • The summaries and other weekly assignments are to be done individually. The work you turn in should be your work in its entirety.
  • Once you have posted your summary or assignment, you may read/review those posted by your classmates.
  • DO NOT DISCUSS YOUR ASSIGNMENT with another student until both of you have completed and posted your assignments.
  • DO NOT READ, online or in draft form, the work of other students until you have completed and posted your own assignment.
Research Report
Research Projects will be carried out in groups. The GTAs will explain guidelines regarding individual and collaborative work.
The Research Report grade will be divided equally between the drafts and the final version.

Exams
The exams will be closed-book in-class exams. No notes or other reference material will be allowed.
