omg its 8:31 in the morning why is no one showing up????
even the instructor??

when do the CAD classes start?

There's a leak in the ceiling right above the printer...in case anyone cares

for those of you in class today: hoary - tedious from familiarity; stale
.. Lawnperson doesn't like Classical architecture?
... No, Sabir mentioned the word (when referring to regular lectures before introducing the first woman who spoke) and told us to look it up. I'm actually quite fond of Classical architecture...or the little I know about it, at least.
.... Ah, that would be when I was otherwise indisposed. He does love a good word, though.

Seriously.... phenomenological?!!??!?

Hey Will it could be some sort of explosion or a jelly fish... way to go

They don't have any secret lives, they're not alive. That question made no sense. I know the point of this is to think about stuff, but seriously? Secret lives? yeah in Mr. Wooden bench thingy's spare time he likes to work as a stunt double in movies about waterfalls....

Actually I heard Mr. Wooden bench is having affair with the stairs on the second floor behind Mrs. Plastic thingy's back. ohhhh scandal.

Wood + plastic = ???

Wood + plastic = ???

Wackstick...

plood

dolop

Installation two + one

Here's my thought: the wood installation is a guy and recent college graduate with long blond hair backpacking through the world. Overflowing with ideas of how thing are and should be, but seriously lacking in reality and experience. He wants to go with the flow and let nature provide for all his needs. Unfortunately, his addiction to video games and O.C.D. get in the way.
The plastic installation's secret life was written about in Bowling for Soup¡¯s song ¡°1985¡±.

nonono.... SERIOUSLY.... phenomenological??!!?!?!?!?!!!?!????!?!?!?!?!??!!?!?!!!?!!?!?!???

Never underestimate the power of phenomenological phenomenon!!

. . . the phenomenologically phenomenal power of phenomenology and a phenomenological approach to phenomena. howzat?

Note to Sabir:
Icarus is NOT in the Bible.

Very true... Icarus and Daedalus are from greek mythology.

happy labor day weekend
cfy mates!

the solar decathlon will need the help of willing students to help assemble and stain the deck in the near future. if interested, email lmcpahil3@gatech.edu for more details.

Does anyone know where the assignment is for 1060 that is due on 9/07. It says it will be posted on Saturday but its still not there. Any info?
. Any dates given for things being up are "guidelines." Get used to it. You'll wish for a time when that was your only problem, once we get to The Drapes

Truth:
Sabir Khan is the stereotypical designer

Sabir is the man

Architects do it all night long ... in studio.

Hmm, the assignment was not posted 9/1...or is it just me who can's see it?
  • you're not the only one..
  • so when will it be posted I wonder...
  • maybe at midnight??
  • maybe theres a competition to see which major's site has the most hits in one week and SK was so siked to win that he made up this assignment and he's really laughing it up with a few buddies as he watches the site hits list add up. (Ah, another fine Tech English major!)
    • yeah maybe
    • that would be so nice, i wouldn't even feel used.
    • that's the way assignments get posted (or not); just something to get used to

  • thanks for giving us an extra couple of days! o7

For those interested in helping out with construction of the solar decathlon house we could use about 6 volunteers on both Thursday and Friday evening this week. So if you'd like to get out of the studio for a few hours please email me - cvankley3@gatech.edu - I'll stay after class wednesday for a few minutes to go over a few details and get a headcount. Just stop by the podium after class. We really appreciate the help.

Update on the Solar Decathlon: Anyone who would like to volunteer we will meet at the entrance to the new architecture building tomorrow and friday afternoon sometime around 2-4pm (let me know what time works best for everyone). I'll provide transporation to the site and we'll work for about 3-4hrs max each day. Please send me an email-cvankley3@gatech.edu to confirm and let me know when you can start in the afternoon. You'll need to wear long pants and closed toe shoes.

The PDF file of the Sep 5th lecture is damaged...-__-
http://cool.coa.gatech.edu/coolx/uploads/24/Alhaddad_01_COA1060_Fall_07.pdf
Anyone can fix it?

i did not find it damaged. go to lecture page and try again. ive uploaded the 'damaged' pdf as a ppt.
sk

Do we just come up with 3 questions or do we answer them too ?

Must we scite where we gots our definitions?

I would just to be safe... and i don't think we have to answer our questions
  • always cite any material that is not yours. please read citation and plagiarism guidelines.
  • this assignment did not ask for answers; the next will. always read the assignment carefully. sk

I have mixed feelings about the fact that the Scanning Tutorial wasn't even posted on the main website until 11:37pm, after most people have already had to turn in their work...what's up with that?
  • Mixed? I found it elsewhere on cool, but if I hadn't I'd kind of be exactly pissed.
Just ask if you need help finding your resources. The tutorial has been pinned up in studio since last Tuesday, and has been on the COOLX template page since last Wednesday.

Missing: two 18 inch rulers, most likely left in the cfy studio. If you have found them or accidentally acquired them, please place in the lost and found. Thanks

Missing: 18x24 sketchpad- I left it on top of the flat files in front of the computers while I was scanning things. When I was finished it was gone. It says JASMIN on the white binding part, and it has some work in it. If you picked it up and/or used it PLEASE put in the lost and found. I really, really need it! Thank you!!!

cfy exhibition is looking good!
take time to tour the work, and enjoy the fruits of your labors.
congratulations!

give yourself ample time to complete assignment 09.16. dont wait until sunday to write and upload. start drafts for the two lectures that are uploaded; the third lecture presentation will be uploaded after lecture tomorrow. sk

Ah! What a beautiful day!

Happy International "Talk Like A Pirate" Day !!

hmm I love being in the studio at 1:35 a.m. with a ton of work left to do
  • it was more fun watching the sun come up in the studio windows, without sleep
I Don't!

Does anyone from section D know if the three big drawings need to be continuous tone or can we have lines?

probably continuous

I guarantee that its continuous tone.

Why is the CFY studio always freezing cold?

Im pretty sure I caught a cold or something from it....is there anyway to fix that?

try a sweater

Also headphones for computer listeners would be appreiciated. I like bagpipes but they really aren't studio inspiring for me.

Did anyone have trouble understanding today's lecture? Don't mean to be rude at all, but it was very hard to pick up anything.

I feel better knowing I wasn't the only one!

  • dont be disheartened if you dont understand everything the first time you encounter it; if college education is worth anything, its because it takes you beyond your comfort zones. it was a tough lecture, a lecture organized around some very important questions about any artifact of human cultural production: what makes something great; how to look at something considered great? while sonit showed much that was unfamiliar to most of you, the lecture was structured clearly around a couple of questions. i will review this lecture in class on monday. but in the meantime, look thru the slides and see if you can, like the figure of the detective that he invoked, reconstruct his argument (through his images and the sequence in which he showed them). and post your questions and thoughts on the lecture q and a page. sk

It wasn't the topic that made it difficult to understand, it was the accent.

try sitting in the front of the room next time he had a soft voice

I sat in the back, his accent was perfectly clear. One of the better presentations imo.

i was sitting up front, i could hear fine. it was a combination of speed talking, too much information for the time we had, a difficult (yet interesting) topic, and obviously his accent. i'm not going to be too critical though because I would not have wanted to try to do what he was doing! hopefully the q&a page will help us understand what was going on.

What is turnkey and how is it related to AEC
  • from my research, a turnkey is a product/system that can be "plugged in, turned on, and operated without additional configuration." i think of computers. we order them, plug them in, make a few adjustments and its good to go. most of the time, they don't need programming. In the building industry i think its referring to the design-bid-construct-occupy process being smooth, methodical, and free of unforeseen complications. please delete this and redefine if you come up with something better!
  • you got the sense of the term: turnkey, literally turn the key and get started. when an aec firm delivers a building to the client that is ready to go or, in computer terms, plug and play. sk

"Here's looking at you, kid."
. Hope everyone did well (enough) on their midterms.

Speaking of midterms, does anyone know how much of our grades they count for? Also, does anyone know when they will be graded by any chance?

FIFA Women's World Cup Final 2007
Brazil vs Germany
Sunday at 8
(go marta!) The 4th goal vs the US was amazing.

3rd place: US vs NORWAY 5 am ... party in my dorm!
  • Can't think of anything better to do at 8am (other than sleep I guess)

go to 1060 overview:
Midterm Exam: 10 % of the final grade
Final Exam: 20% of the final grade
you get back the midterms after midterm break

We love Sabir

He loves you too, just in a "tough love" sort of way. Ha!

Prof. Khan is my hero.

Just to put things in perspective, its really gonna suck if our next lecture isn't canceled.

please see revised schedule for 1060 for this week. there is no assignment due this sunday. sk

    • Or a person with a messed up projector. <— Pooo Ha Ha... that's Funny... lol!!
    • Oh, that we should all have messed up projectors... (red and pink? wtf?)

Hi...so I have yet to purchase the second half of the supplies from the materials list and tried to reach it again on the cool-x site...but it doesn't work anymore. Is there any way that I can get that document again?

I'm a little unclear about the instructions for the library assignment. Do we really have to turn in printed copies of all the search results turned up by the databases? Wouldn't that be something like 30-40 individual screen-captures? That just seems like a lot of paper to use on screen-captures.
  • It says we can bring in a summarized list, so I'd C&P and then refine that down to a page (two at most). I'm pretty sure that the first 2-3 hits on each of your searches will prove beyond reasonable statistical doubt that you've done the work.

How do we get started if we dont know our group or decades? I thought we were supposed to get those last friday during class?

  • We are supposed to research the impact of hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans

Ok, so far this article we're supposed to read seems pretty darn biased. I just got back from the Lower Ninth Ward, and the place is a wasteland, no one has moved back in. This is funny considering that the government is offering money to people who want to move back into their neighborhoods so that they can rebuild. And this quote is ridiculous, "Suggestions that it be forsaken sounded to many like a pretext for getting rid of the city's black majority." Except didn't the author say that fewer than 3% of the city's population lived in the Lower Nine? You hear the business owners saying that they don't want the people to come back to that area, but I don't think it's because of their color, I think it's because of the crime that was such an issue there. Did the author not also say that many of the neighborhood's household incomes were assisted by government supplements? Could that imply that several of the residents weren't necessarily providing for themselves or even trying to? I'm just saying, it's really not a race issue, and if people want to rebuild, the government is offering money and there are hundreds of organizations in the area that are providing free or cheap housing for those who need it, it's just a matter of when people decide to come back and take responsibility for their lives into their own hands. The help is there, but will they take it?

  • the situation is 'raced' whether you and i think it is or not. the assignment is not asking us to debate one point or another. or at least not just yet and certainly not until we have informed ourselves about the situation through our research. the task for this week's assignment is to use a situation as complex as Katrina/New Orleans as a springboard into a whole range of issues in order to look up and research a wide variety of material. so, for example, i might suggest that your dismissal of the residents' perception and fears (as reported by the writer in the sentence you quote) might provide the perfect motivation for you to research the relationship between environment and race, a combination of terms that will turn up a rich set of bibliographic source material. sk

please make sure you read the library assignment carefully. it is due this friday noon.

does anyone know how to narrow a search on the GIL site using a Mac? when I click the narrow search button nothing happens....

go to the arch library and ask.

30 sources? c'mon, are you serious?

oh... and to quote the late great colonol sanders,"I'm way too drunk to taste this chicken." haha just kidding....

but seriously...

hey, anyone know how to indent with html?

Like this?
Try Google.

Hey Jimmy I was in the room when you were working and you asked me if I saw your ipod but I didnt at the time. I found it though on the third floor on the wood installation later that day and have been looking for you but have not seen you. Its in my locker so whenever I see you, I will get it for you. I will try to look for you after 1060 class. -Ralph Raymond

  • ha! i think i get it.

if anybody has found a key on a blue georgia tech lanyard around the architecture building please let me know either on here or email me. thanks, andrew harmon ( andrewh@gatech.edu)

  • does anyone know which Computer Science class we are supposed to take? 1301? 1315?
  • you can take either... 1301 is intro to computer programming and 1315 is intro to computational media... it's your choice.
  • Im taking CS1315 and it's very easy. You just mess around with pictures and sounds and stuff.
  • cs 1315 is the cs course designed for coa majors. pl doublecheck with your prog advisor before you sign up for another version. sk
  • well they can check with their advisor, but if they're an architecture major, good luck getting in touch with him...
  • it is registration week now. told you guys way back to go see your advisor and not wait for the last minute. but for simple qs like this one, all you need is the sheet of required courses. it says cs 1315 over 1301. sk

I'm going to miss 1060 next semester...I'll miss the awesome lectures and Prof. Khan

:(

I'm not gonna miss the lectures.

Some of the given readings are not cited. How are we then supposed to refer to them in our bibliographies or in-text citations?

I thought it was a persuasive essay meaning which don't require those

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'll miss the lectures...not the assignments

Just to be clear, we need to have it in paper and online before class Monday the 26th ?

Yes

How does that make sense? It clearly states on the assignments page that every assignment is due by midnight on the night of the assignment... The due date for this assignment is the 26th, so midnight right?

Nope, they said to have it in by the beginning of class on Monday. You might check, but just go ahead and post it, since you'll have it done anyway.

:)

whoever put the smiley face on here is obviously not working on the paper... :S

whoever just wrote that is obviously not working on the paper either... WOO procrastination!

or they could be done with the paper :) time to think about the final! yeah!
way to rub it in everyone's face that you're done. :o(

Wow , just finished all the reading... not as useful as I had hoped but pretty interesting.

Just to make sure (because everyone I have asked so far is not sure, and I never heard a definite answer from a TA), we don't have to post the essay on our assignments page, just turn it in as a paper copy in class, right?

I don't see the point in posting it online as well, It will mess up the formatting of the paper.

No, you definitely do have to post it on your assignment page before class tomorrow.

Oh! Thanks for replying, I would have been SOL. It never says in the description of the assignment anything about a deadline for posting it online, just that we had to turn in a hard copy. Thanks for clarifying.

My TA has sent an email telling us that we are handing in a hard copy in class, no mention of posting it on CoolX. Could be different by TA however.

fifth street. that is all. ha

but seriously i hate streets now. thanks alot Khanipotamus

has anyone figured out what we're supposed to do about citing these readings?

The soapbox rocks, but I wish it was more like the slivers.Someone please add something about guitar hero and not being able to find a girl.

Ha ha benches are funny.....

The imagination is a powerful tool.

Does anyone else feel professionally arrogant in writing this paper with big words such as pedagogical

UGA boasts about good looking girls, but I wasn't impressed..they just have more girls.. thats all. quality is important at GT not quantity of ugly, moraly casual coeds

It's completely obvious that architecture students don't procrastinate.

I swear I'm not procrastinating...I'm just broadening my horizons via an exploration of technological networking...aka facebook.com

lies.

can't sleep. must...go...on...only...six...more...pages

i see skies of blue, red roses too...and i think to myself what a wonderful world (without 1060/1011)

I love 1060 like a child likes candy.

wonder if anyone is actually on fifth right now still observing...oh happy thoughts =)

Let's talk about streets, bay-beeee; let's talk about you and meeeee....

as great as the readings were, now that I've started writing and developed a good outline, it seems like most of it is just speculation on what I've seen and contains little professional opinion

it's close to 3am now, and i'm still on the opening paragraph... i've made numerous different types of food, played a game of cranium, went to the airport, got a milkshake, facebooked stalked all of georgia tech, watch every video on youtube, played tic-tac-toe, dots, and hang man on every white board on my hall, and looked up the lyrics to many different christmas songs... can anyone out do that? i'll pay someone 30 bucks to write this for me.

The last 500 words are by far the worst...its almost over...

Is appropriating Jungian philosophy for application to a DOT bridge presumptuous?

250 words is even worst! i just want to sleep!!!!!!

i'm still on my opening paragraph... i just added grey's anatomy trivia to facebook.

does it HAVE to be 2000 words?...i stopped at 1715, u guys think that's good?

2000 is good, but I say you should go to about 2100 just for good measure (i'm just now 1/3 of the way there after one hour of actual paper typing) -SS

HA!!!! I can outdo all of you...I have 68 words typed. God help me.

OMG I'm already halfway done in an hour -SS

done, 2,133 words -SS
'night all

dude if you seriously think that UGA has nothing but ugly girls than you either have incredibly delusional high standards or are blindly stereotyping the entire woman population of UGA based on the appearance of a few girls. i mean, damn dude have you seen some of those girls? Ugly? Really? and what exactly is morally causal? did you see someone having sex in the stadium or something? not that there is anything wrong with that haha
dont get me wrong the girls down here are hot too but.....damn dude really? go down to athens sometime and then tell me they are all ugly.

Yes ! Sex in a stadium is wrong...send pix....

oh and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3MotOO-atQ

Can I just google up some pictures and cite them or do they have to be taken by me ? Nice link

8:30 am...500 words to go....I have run out of things to say, seriously, it is a street.

8 : 30 2821 words. Calling it a night :p

9:30 am, in english class, typing... 396 words. 1604 words to go!

10:30 1000 words!!!! HALF WAY DONE!
- same here, haha.

keep going! you can do it!

i think we have written more in the soapbox in the past 24 hours than we have all year. i can attest to this because i have written in it 5 times now.

10:53 AM .... 1084 words. OMFG.

10:56, 1912 words. How the hell did I do that. I'm just going to apologize to my TA now... my paper is a bunch of rambling, nonsensical crap. However, it is pretty entertaining.
- I got 1776. My essay is pretty much the same, haha. But eh. I hope they're not expecting much from me.. 'cause that's not what they're going to get.

wow that is impressive....reading the soapbox has been as enjoyable as reading slivers...we should publish this =)

2 rockstars and a caffeine pill later.. i hope 2,012 words is good enough

I FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can i just google the image and attach to my essay?
last minute question! answer me por favor!

Times up, pencils down.

That was more fun than slivers.

God, I love COA.

the soapbox is so quiet now... =(

You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! Damn you for destroying the soapbox.

Since we are doing songs now :

Hello.

Just nod if you're awake
Is there anyone home?

Come on, now.
I hear youre feeling sleepy
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet with a cup of coffee

I HATE STUDIO WITH A BURNING PASSION

Top 10 reasons why I hate studio:

1. 9 hour class, 4 hour credit? wtf!?
2. The 9+ more hours a week we spend doing homework. woohoo
3. photoshop
4. Drawing
5. People who like drawing
6. The quote,"oh you're a BC major." I swear if i hear that one more freaking time I'm gonna snap.
7. Next semester.
8. Buying all of these supplies when I'm already paying tuition, room & board, whatever.
9. Using said supplies
10. The fact that I'm sitting here typing this when I have so much more studio to do before tomorrow. Hooray depression!

Your at Georgia Tech...What did you expect
  • just rape, not attempted murder
  • lovely sunshine/walking through meadows/love and peace–then hurricane whirring past/thunder striking/ no one left alive...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahah..........

sometimes... i accidentally finish my studio homework ten minutes before class, starting the night before of course

To the person contemplating suicide, please do it away from my flat file.

WOOHOO it's the weekend.

AGA KHAN!!!!!!!!!!
  • HELL YEA !!!
  • party at the architecture building!!! haha yea right like i would be caught dead in there for no reason....
      • Actually, that would be kinda fun....

I AM BEOWULF !!!

does anyone else find themselves really attracted to erin?

  • Yea.

fyi, PedEx means "Pedestrian Experience". It's an old project.

  • Putting Dean Galloway on the list, real classy.
    • I think they meant Doug Allen

Does anyone know how long the final exam essay should be? a page, two pages?

I don't think there is a set limit. Just however much you can write in half an hour is what I'm going on. And answering all the criteria on the final exam page.

any chance we could bring a standard sized note card to class tomorrow with our question and a few bullet points to help us with our essays?

do we need paper?
and who and when was the Penn U. renovation or something lecture
  • 11.14.07 Town/Gown Harley Etienne - regards, your friendly neighborhood architect

Who is the friendly neighborhood architect?

Professor Khan?
  • Na , its Ali

  • Right.
Wil we be given the questions we are expected to answer as a prompt???

  • No, you formulate your own question. Then answer your own question making sure to include all the criteria listed the final exam page

i meant "would we get those criteria?"

Paper or no?
  • No paper, you are only allowed to bring a pencil as far as I know.

My TA said we might need our own paper, so bring some then if we dont need it you can always just toss it.

Sabir said no paper

Which lecture was the one talking about health?

Craig Zimring

Sabir's just so sexy I can't stand it.

-Ashton Austin

just do your work

Much better than the first test.

Sooo, If any one has seen a stack of collages/DNAs/Soapbox Stuff lying around the studio that look remotely like a steamer, it would be something along the lines of AMAZING of you would let me know!

Hi. Just to give you the heads up: A new sustainable gardening program is starting at tech! The pilot plot of land has been chosen and the committee wants to start growing things as soon as possible! I've volunteered to find architecture students that may be interested in aiding in the design and development of the garden layout and other possible buildings associated with the program.
Check out the project website and email me (mericamay@earthilnk.net) or the Liam the coordinator (liamratt@gmail.com) if you are interested.

Man, I'm so tired, but the night is still young. Any other people working in Studio tonight or am I the only one who put this thing off until the last minute.. again? (I'm working in my dorm room.)

Mistletoe is here.

If you need to spray-fix your work late at night, at least step outside to do it rather than spray-fixing right inside the studio. No one in the CFY studio needs to lose any more brain cells.

All are required to use the Spray Booth in the basement for spray-fixing, spray-mounting, and spray-painting. Make the trip. Save some cells. No exceptions.

EXPRESS CHECKOUT IS READY.
ALL REQUIREMENTS DUE 12.12.
GO TO http://cool.coa.gatech.edu:8000/coolx/18

PLEASE READ TO ENSURE ALL IS WELL WITH YOUR 1011 AND 1060 STUFF

chandni jindal left her buzz card in the cfy studio!!! please come get it!

did anyone find a WD external hard drive in studio yesterday? if you did, please let me know.

Any word on who won the essays ?

I dont think they are done grading them yet, we'll have to wait until they are all read first.
  • the essay jury will be over break. the best five essays from each section will be read by the jurors. the winners will be announced during the first week of classes in jan. sk

Inquiry books from the finalists entries are on the instructor shelf in studio for safe-keeping. You may collect it there to turn into your instructor. We will be keeping them for exhibition next semester.

Has anyone found a flashdrive? I think I left it upstairs in one of the computer labs; it's a small black LEXAR FIREFLY with a blue light on the end. If anyone's found it or know who has pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaasssssssssseeee post; it has all my studio work on it.
  • actually, i think i have. This morning up in the 3rd floor computer lab (the one with just regular computers, not the one with those big widescreen monitors) in the first row on the left i saw a flash drive. it was a little black one i believe. Who knows if it's still there, and idk if that's the one you're talking about, but i did see a black one there.

i was working last night in that lab, at that computer i think, and saw it too? it was black with a clear case, it was in the first row. i don't know if it is still there.

Ohh... That one... I think i saw it today... wait... may be not... GO CHECK IT~!!

.:I saw a quarter-sized flashdrive on the printing office's door this afternoon:.

Thanks guys, but it's gone.. that WAS the one.. oh well, sigh Thanks.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, CFY!!!

Does anyone know what has happened to the inquiry books from the projects that made it to the competition? Mine does not have my name of it, just a beautiful Haitian flag on it, which is blue on top, red at the bottom and has a white center piece. Please let Ralph Raymond know, por favor. That would be me.

  • two things guys: if you ever see a flashdrive, a camera, etc lying around, please turn it in to the lost and found at either the dean's office or the library. this way there is a chance that it will get returned to the rightful owner; regarding inquiry books: they were collected and are in a safe place. contact your instructor. sk

where are the missing inquiry books from the competition?
  • READ what is just above what you posted

HA express checkout. what a joke. wouldn't it be more accurate if you called it 'this is going to take a while' checkout?? just a thought......

Time is relative. It is certainly handy to have links to everything on one page.

this is the class that never ends, it goes on and on my friend, some people started taking it not knowing their major, and they'll continue work for it forever just because this is the class that never ends....

Please pick up anything of value in 150.
It will ALL be GONE this weekend. ag

ENJOY A WONDERFUL WINTER BREAK!

  • two things guys: if you ever see a flashdrive, a camera, etc lying around, please turn it in to the lost and found at either the dean's office or the library. this way there is a chance that it will get returned to the rightful owner; regarding inquiry books: they were collected and are in a safe place. contact your instructor. sk

are we supposed to pick up our inquiry books from this safe place? my instructor didnt know anything about it
  • if you were a competition finalist, i have your inquiry book stored on the shelf in 150. pls leave it there; i will share it with your instructor, and keep it for possible inclusion in our spring exhibition. ag

FInally i'll rest in peace... not that I'm gonna kill myself, but every day in GT, even in weekends, I had to worry about studio works... now I'll go back home.. get some sleeep and eat good food~!

Amen to that!

any teacher or ta or somebody know about final grades for these classes? when and where we can find them for both classes? peace and a good break!
  • if you have completed all your express checkout items successfully, you should be receiving comment sheets and grades from your studio instructor this weekend. ag

Anyone else finding it hard to go to sleep even now that we don't have to be staying up late doing work?
yes. It's 3 am. I'm usually doing battle with an adobe program right about now. I feel so lost.....

When are we getting our final grades? In both classes.

  • last call for work/supplies in 150. cleanout begins at 8am monday the 17th. ag
i lost my 18 X 24 sketch pad too it says LINDSEY GUNTER in purple on the front. there is no more paper in it to use..just MY work...if you have it please put it in the B flat file so it will get to my instructor.

my instructor told me to take my inquiry book, i was a finalist, but she told me where they were and told me to take it back. it is now at home with me. i hope no one needs it – lindsey gunter ( i got honorable mention at the competition)
  • lindsey, pls bring your inquiry book back next semester. we'd love to include it in our spring exhibitions. ag

I also took my inquiry book home with me because I was told to do so. -Jill Exley (I placed 2nd)
  • jill, can you pls bring yours back at the start of next semester? we'd love to include it in our spring exhibitions. ag

:( i can't pick up my 'valuables' from studio because the door is locked, how do i get the code? >oreta taylor
  • e me. ann.gerondelis@coa.gatech.edu
They told us the code at the beginning of the year... email Sabir or Ann to get it.

where do we find out our grades from our TAs?

ON a side note, does anyone wish they called them licks rather than riff ? "Your work needs more licks" "I've been licking my toys for a week now without getting anywhere"

Even though they were called riffs, I still licked my toys. Is that weird?
  • Only if you were naked. If you were its fine as long as you're hot...

ENJOY A GREAT WINTER BREAK!
See you soon in 1012.

WED LECTURES ARE IN THE COA AUDITORIUM

its unlocked

So...when are we gonna get our grades for those essays that they made into a competition?
  • the grades for the essays, and other assignments, are with your gtas. the winners of the essay writing competition will be announced feb 6. sk

Visit the links page at http://cool.coa.gatech.edu/coolx/1060 and add your own !

Baby its cold outside!
SNOW!!!

WHY are we doing outside sketches this semester and not last semester when it was a hundred degrees warmer!?!

this cold and rain certainly makes one appreciate the bldg envelope, no? this semester is actually perfect for studying the buildings under very diverse weather conditions. soon the warm days of spring will make winter a distant memory. and not to worry - you will be sketching then too - surfacing some wonderfully diverse discoveries in that well-documented inquiry book that captures these seasonal changes!
ag

man, with all this drafting to do, i just don't see how i'll find time to study for calc, my other 4 hour credit. i dont see how we can maintain this pace all semester...

I know! My classes last semester came second to studio and it was evident when I got my grades. This semester is already so much worse!

What was the name of the guy who talked about Heffernan in Wed's lecture?
  • professor rob craig, architecture program.
  • thanks!

wow
wow what?
  • World of Warcraft?
    • Hell yea.

It's almost Friday!!!....almost...

My teacher has been trying to tell me to draw 1/4" thick glass in a section/floorplan drawing at 1/4" = 1 foot scale. The lines would be 1/4 of 1/12 of 1/4 inches apart... –1/192 of an inch.

  • yes, conventions allow glass thickness to be slightly exaggerated at 1/4". interesting, no? check out the coa 1012 minatta reading under on-line reserves to see specific 1/4" examples of convention in plan and section. ag
  • Drawing negative dimensions ftw.

I have Drafter's Neck...owwwww....
a massage. . . anyone???
no.
  • Sure. That'll be 2 sheets of expensive paper please.

on another note, 5 dollars for 1 piece of paper? wtf? all i gotta say is this paper better cook me dinner or something.
  • For 5 dollars this thing better draft itself. Either that or just not make my work look like crap.

maybe tomorrow ill pay for some leaves on the ground....

in the space of two weeks I've gone from loving studio to strongly disliking it...but that could just be my personal opinion of what we're currently working on.
  • I think its due to the technical nature of what we are working on combined with a stricter evaluation process. That and the fact that it sucks.
  • Pls do raise your specific frustrations/challenges for discussion in studio w/ your instructor. Ask about the pleasures to be found in precision drafting, and its relationship to those earlier 'loving studio' moments. Once you can see the potential of these refined precise drafting procedures, you can exploit their potential and use them to surface your significant discoveries. ag
  • And here's some smart, raw, 2d and 3d investigating now in progress, for inspiration... http://www.flickr.com/photos/cfy/. Click ex 5 form and composition in right margin. ag

African Nations Cup !!
  • uh.... what??
    • Football tournament going on in Africa. (Go Pharaohs !!!)
      • yea, this is america. football is NOT in africa. and soccer is gay.
          • looool. whatever man.
        • ...
      • please don't show how ignorant you are by saying ridiculous things like "this is america...soccer is gay." Grow up.
        • i could care less if you think im ignorant, ridiculous, or whatever you think of me. im just sayin soccer is gay.
    • "Grow up"? Adult soccer is incredibly unpopular in the U.S. Soccer is a kids game. How can you say "grow up and like soccer"?
      • Loooool man you make me laugh. Grow up = become an adult. Being an adult involves making fully informed decisions based on values and beliefs acquired in the process of "growing up". Not respecting other people's preferences/opinions in your manner is neither informed, educated, and is downright respectful. Soccer (Futbol/football/whatever) is a game enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Now if you would like to make an argument as to why soccer is homosexual or indicative of certain sexual orientation then feel free to post and I will reply and we can have a mature discussion. Since this appears unlikely to happen then I will choose to take an arabic proverb : "Intakalm al jahiloon faqul salam" If the ignorant are speaking then just say peace and leave them . Peace.
    • US is the only country which doesnt like soccer. just saying that "soccer is gay" on public place isnt right, dude... repect others. your comment just made everyone except american gay...
      • not to interrupt yall's bitc—quibbling, but don't yall have work to do?!
        • Yes we do. But studio is a learning experience, and I'm sure part of it is to become informed open-minded professionals, right ? (BTW the person who made the previous comment used my computer,I wasn't asking myself a question.
        • Check this out : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7169575.stm
      • so.....you've yet to prove to me that soccer isn't gay. you just said that everybody else in the world liked it (which btw is highly unlikely that EVERY other person outside of the US likes soccer but whatever). I'M just saying that i absolutely hate soccer. oh and it's "downright respectful" to not respect other people's preferences? how is that in any way related to what you were trying to tell me? haha good call buddy.
        • Friend, if I was going to be disrespectful I would have said something about American Football. But since you want to go into this, lets begin to break down soccer in terms of social , political , and cultural reasons for why its not gay. 1. Lets look at how good a reception Lance Armstrong has been getting for his Tour de France wins. Pretty impressive considering it was not too long ago that it was a competition for "French idiots". Is calling it "gay" a way to compensate for a lack of success ? I heard similar things when the Dream Team lost to Greece in the basketball finals of the Olympics. 2. A large part of the dislike towards soccer stems to it being view as a socialist intrusion that was "unamerican" (whatever that means). In fact, if you will look into the history of the cuban missle crisis, using satellite photos Kissinger identified soccer fields in Cuba. To quote : "Cubans play baseball. Russians play soccer." 3. It is undesirable t to market a non-american game simply because Americans don't stand to profit from it as much. European leagues can make more money than American ones. This ofcourse is only looking at it from the short term perspective. Now. I won't say Soccer is better, im not an ignorant person, I think football has its own merits and I personally like to watch it on occasion (though I find the constant stops frustrating). But I will say that calling it gay is just a silly way to write off a sport. There are TONS more reasons to argue against soccer and TONS to argue for it. Gay isn't one.

          • "Football" known as soccer in the US is by far the most popular sport in the world. This does not mean that everyone outside of the USA loves it. That is an ignorant statement. In 2002 the Super Bowl attracted 95 million viewers. Two years later the Euro 2004 final(Football aka soccer) attracted 153 million viewers. The icing on the cake is that this is only one tournament. The World Cup attracted a total of 30 billion viewers and more than 1 billion people watched the final!!!
95 million versus 1 billion?? Come on now, is this even fair??
As for the gay argument, it has been addressed so I won't discuss it.Furthermore there is only one profitable American football league. There are dozens of profitable Football(aka Soccer) leagues worldwide.
          • Saa

Great! well why dont all of yall go live somewhere else. we dont need you here in America....
  • For being a country that is built on immigration of people from all over the world, I am suprised always by americans antiworld feelings, always ready to tell people to go away and go back to where they came from.
  • True, for I am but a humble arch. student...

lmao, mind if i ask who I am speaking to?-Saa

abernathy bitch haha or mofo parks - z

soccer is awesome!!! :D

Hey get off the internetz and finish stuff for review kthx.

So, reviews huh ?

whoever said "go live somewhere else", u r an ASSXXXX.

I really hope that no professionals in our respective fields look at this site, and the soapbox, and get impressions of us based on some of the posts made. Its bad enough to have that kind of immaturity put on display for all of your instructors to see.

srsly. we've at least 3 more years together. Don't kill each other NOW.
  • True. Though I do expect some expulsion to occur on the night before final review. All those people, so little desks. So much horror.
  • its all part of the weed out process
    • Hehe "weed out".
  • no one weeds you out; you weed yourself out. thats how life works.
    • YEAH! thats how life works!! nobody needs to hear your 'words of wisdom' everyday.
      • whoever said that was just kidding, unlike you. chill out, have a beer.... or 20

Wooo! Review went wellll. Time for some sleep.

Looking for someone to do work for me - paying minimum wage.
  • Is there not something called an HONOR code around here?
    • Tell that to the instructors...Im sure theres something there about abusing cfy students
  • Hahahaha.

I am never staying up all night ever again...
...never a good idea. even if you get a couple of hours sleep its better than none.
there is supposedly a sleep cycle where you can sleep 1 hour ever 6 hours and be fine.... hmmmmm

HAPPY SUPER BOWL!!!
  • i hope no one says 'super bowl is gay'. Arguing a sport if it is gay or not was totally nonsense..
    • Hear hear.
      • I won't say a thing :

(KIDDING BTW)
if football is gay, soccer is..... nevermind hahaha
BTW HOW COME OUR INSTRUCTOR DIDNT TELL US ABOUT 5.1 + 5.2 reflection...
  • hold those thoughts. your official COOLx reflections will be invited at the conclusion of ex 5. ag

  • hey people, one of the reasons i'm paying $15000 a semester to go to college is so that I don't have to bus tables later in life. if you're not going to throw away all your trash in studio, PLEASE at least throw away your food. half eaten chicken fingers are just plain gross.

I'm tired.

I am sad that the Fabrication and Assembly Reference packet is "damaged and cannot be fixed". help?
  • hmmm, the link on the templates page is working fine. perhaps your instructor has created a specific resource pack for your studio? if their link is not working, just ask her/him for a reload. ag

-Look through the other instructor's pages until you find one who has it uploaded. It works on Tim Frank's page.

Watching the Super Bowl Sunday night reminded me of how great a game football is and at the same time how the next month is miserable for everyone except basketball fans. March Madness is the only basketball event worth watching. You know that the sports season is at its end when ESPN starts playing soccer, poker, and weightlifting every day.
  • Kinda the opposite for soccer fans. Champs league coming soon, African cup semis, domestic leagues heating up. Things are looking good.
    • hey i like college basketball, so stfu
      • I like it too. Just saying that outside espn theres some pretty cool stuff to check out.
        • ok, but saying," March Madness is the only basketball event worth watching," is dumb. tennessee/florida tonight, duke/unc tomorrow, tenn/memphis feb 23, sec tourney at the end of feb, acc tourney, there is tons of good games and stuff "worth watching" besides the ncaa tourney...
          • Oh my bad , I thought you were talking about my post (The soccer one)
          • Ok ill explain myself, Basically in all sports, the past decade has become the death of the regular season. Sports now revolve 98% around the postseason and nothing else. Nobody remember's anything except the champion. Therefore besides college football, playoffs are all that matter. Everything else is just hype and seeding. cough cough Patriots

I lost my phone- I'm pretty sure I left in the restroom- but it's not there anymore- if you picked it up or somethin- please let me know!!! I will check back on here! thanks!
~Jasmin Gonzalez~

when did you leave it there? you may want to check with the janitorial staff? or with the folks in the library or the deans office (second floor). all places where stuff gets turned in when found.

I left it there this afternoon during studio- the dean's office was closed- and I didn't think to check those other places- but I've left now- so I'll probably go check first thing tomorrow.
  • A janitor found it, I remember her asking if a girl had left a phone in the bathroom.

oh ok! thanks!

help! it seems someone has borrowed my [father's] tape measure and forgotten to return it. i last saw it in the top metal flat file at the end of the room. it has a metal casing and some yellow accents and i think its 25' long. please, if you have it or have seen it, either return it or email me: dchaney3@mail.gatech.edu thanks!

i hate studio.

Then Why are u in it? - _ - ;;
  • i'm not in it right now, just dreading going. ugh.

I HATE THE SCANNER.

You really should not complain so much. studio is just a fact of life for us right now. I don't particularly like it either, but you chose to come to Tech, and therefore chose to accept some pretty big challenges. I'm not saying you have to enjoy studio, because I sure don't. But take what you can from it. Learn. Even if you just learn that it's not the thing for you, at least you know. but try to make the best of it because it's not going away. Especially for you arch. and i.d. suckas. haha... BC train; wooo wooo!

  • You are so headed for management. (Thou in all truthiness, nice perspective)

whatev, just do the work. get it over with, and go into BC :D :D :D :D

  • Interesting argument, but I think the complaints are justified. There is an unnecessary amount of work, and very little actual investigation or consolidation of discoveries. I think if we spent more time actually DISCUSSING our buildings than drawing bricks I would have a lot more to chew on than "wow, it are system". To counter an argument that I see coming, if you want to cite the enhancement of our technical skills I'd say that we could have better spent time on freehand rather than drafting. As drafting is simply a matter of x time results in x quality. Also, to the instructors that argue we are prompted more by what it takes to get the work done rather than what it takes to make discoveries I would like to say that I will start working for discoveries when I know what I am trying to discover. I discovered a building isn't made of cotton candy, sensational. When we begin evaluating thought process or debating actual conjectures rather than "Wawa weewa, 3d bricks". I probably got it wrong, well, what is in that 5 foot space between brick and bathroom ? We spend sometime reflecting on the work and what makes a certain cut more interesting, or a certain set of constructs more valid. I probably have it all wrong, but then again I guess thats another problem right ? (BTW, I'm not trying to debate how this is being taught , as there are people far smarter, wiser, and good looking that set this structure out. Im just trying to understand their thought process and bridge the gap between what I'm supposed to be learning and what I actually am)

  • thank you for taking the time to write this. and, whats more, giving it some thought. (tho, of course, i am also hearing the real-time pain of drafting as well in some of this). lets discuss this exercise (and other exercises) and the pedagogy and the procedures behind them. and lets do so during lecture tomorrow, wed. sk

  • Thanks, and I apologize if it sounded far too much like a discursive whine-fest wrapped within some semblance of an argument. I'll admit I am frustrated with drafting but probably more dismayed by the laborious nature of the work + the lack of any actual feedback. It seems pretty much like producing work and filing it away rather than pinning up with some discourse on what we learned and why its important. Again, thanks and sorry for the lack of brevity.

  • absolutely no need to apologize. lets discuss this and other exercises and the learning opportunities afforded, missed, and overlooked. sk

I HATE PEOPLE WHO TELL PEOPLE NOT TO COMPLAIN.

The NAAB exhibition is up! Do take time in the next few days to tour all the walls of the COA - evidence of great thinking and making abounds! The CFY work is on the bridge (the long wall). It all comes down Thursday, so enjoy it soon.

  • So many sunsets from studio. So many sunrises. And all we have to show for it are 24x18's, bad cholesterol from substituting COA snack machines for meals, and/or broken dreams. ^_^
  • I don't know about you, but I have a lot of 17x11's too...
  • i like grits
    • we need a CFY microwave

FOUND! A silver flash drive plugged into the USB of the first computer in CFY Studio (next to scanner.) I'm leaving it here plugged in and will be here for a while to look out for it; please come reclaim your flash drive! :D Thanks!

does the flash drive have a complete stainless steel casing, with a pivoting sleeve and red LED (1GB capacity)? if so, can you please put it in the B2 drawer of the white flatfile along the wall when you walk in the studio, thank you.

We need a CFY pet...a mascot, if you will.

Catch one of the mice running around eating the food on the floor.

I know it will be almost impossible to find, but did you guys ever see a white 30 GB video Ipod in CFY room? it had black dafault case and a sony ear phone with it... I not sure if I left it there, but Studio is the one of the place that i spent most of my time in GT, so it is possible that i left there while i was coming out of there... exausted and sleepy... If you guys have any idea, PLEASE LEAVE SOME INFO in this SOAP BOX~!!

  • can we get a little more info on the CAD classes we all signed up for?

  • Hey has anyone seen an Alumni Association Banner in the Studio? It was put into lost and found but now it is not in there. Please let me know ASAP. 404-625-9235. Thank you.

It's 2:37 am. We pissed off the cashier lady at McDonalds'. I love CFY Studio!

How much could a woodchuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood and he was in studio?

A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could if a woodchuck could chuck wood and he was in studio.

But since a woodchuck can't chuck wood nor would he if he could then the answer is a woodchuck wouldn't chuck wood even if a woodchuck could chuckwood...in studio.

No. The question was "IF" a woodchuck could chuck wood, how much COULD he chuck.

Are we going to have studio on the Friday before Spring Break? I'm trying to get some plane tix and I don't want to get stuck here for a day that I could be traveling (thats what happened for Fall Break, I'm not bitter about it though, honestly).
- yes, studio will meet on thu and fri before spring break. on the agenda: reviewing the review, and submitting all work and i-books for grading over the break. ag

  • Is there some way that I could still sign up for an AutoCAD class? Lance Dudkowski

  • Has anyone seen a small blue memory stick case? its blue and it folds in half and it should have a memory stick in there .... please let me know asap if u find it or come across it - 678-334-1136 -amyn soldier THANKS!!

We should have a Lost and Found CFY link on here.... Sabir or Ann can we add one?

Some model storage tips:
Try hanging a model bag inside your locker, and let models sit inside, secure or
Store models on high studio shelves - folks often bring in a tub or box for sharing with studio mates. This protects work in progress, and makes it easier to find.
Pls don't put models on instructor storage shelf where they will get moved, and easily become lost and/or damaged in the midst of archive shuffling.
thx,
ag

Is there a website where we can look at pictures from the NAAB exhibit? I know there was a site last semester with pictures from our reviews but I can't find the link... Anyone know?

SOMEONE TOOK OUR CHIPBOARD: 3 SHEETS! WE HAD OUR NAMES ON THEM. PLEASE RESPECT OTHER PEOPLES' MATERIALS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE LABELED CLEARLY.
  • The only things I ever lose in studio are things that clearly have my name written on them. Currently missing a circle guide, lead sharpener, and a cutting mat. ~Salazar~

So why can't we use laser cutters? Cutting out 100 window panes by hand takes unnecessary amounts of time, is inefficient, and looks unprofessional. If we know how to use the laser cutter, we should be allowed to use it. We're responsible enough to be trusted with it. Older students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th year studios use it and their projects look amazing. We should be allowed to use it, too. There is nothing to be gained from cutting windows out of chipboard for hours while we could be making the rest of our models. It's a waste of time and the results are not very high quality. If not allowing us to laser cut is some attempt at teaching us patience or discipline, or some other moral lesson, I must say that we are not children and should not be taught as such. Pushing morals on us or disciplining us by making us cut chipboard is not going to be effective. If, however, you're afraid of the laser cutters being broken by people who don't know how to use them, then simply hold those people responsible. If they break the laser cutter, they should have to pay for it. Stop babying us and let us use current technology so that we can come up with professional looking products instead of products with crooked edges, round corners, and pieces of chipboard hanging off of them! - Ryan Schuster

  • +5 internets for you, my friend

Try working with precision and care and not complaining. You'll get to use the laser cutters eventually; just get on with your work.

I agree, stop complaining. What if in the future, the laser cutter is down? You will be glad that you know how to cut out hundreds of windows-you can wait like everyone else for the laser cutter and appreciate then.

The laser cutter is nice to use, but after a fiasco over it last night I can see why they do not want us to use it right now. It is not necessarily about learning precision or cheating, but rather it being that not everyone knows how to use is or has been trained to use the specific one here at Tech and is an unfair advantage to everyone else. We don't need people running up there trying to use is that do not know how and break it. For chipboard now just cut it, yes it sucks but for other materials like plastic It should be ok

theres a lead sharpener in the lost/found room 359a

I wouldn't call it complaining, I'd call it a well thought out argument. At least I had valid thoughts to back up my points. And, by the way, I am working with precision. Just because I think that not using the laser cutter is a bad idea doesn't mean that I work any less harder than anyone else, please get your preconceived notions that dissent = laziness out of the way before you take shots anonymously at someone who was brave enough to post their name. As for the laser cutter possibly breaking in the future, yes, that may happen, but it won't happen often, and I'm sure that I'll be perfectly able to cut windows then, but as for now, the laser cutter is working, so we should be able to use it as we are perfectly entitled to as students who pay thousands of dollars to Georgia Tech so that they can buy things like laser cutters. As for it being an "unfair advantage" to know how to use the laser cutter, I do not appreciate that mentality. Those who took the extra hours to learn AutoCAD and to learn how to send files to the laser cutter deserve to reap the benefits. If I wish to have professionally done work, I will use the best processes available, laser cutters included, to make it look the way it should. I think we should be given the option to make these models look as good as they can. It's not about the laser cutter per say, it's about the principle of being held back and being given last priority just because we're CFY. We deserve all the benefits that Tech has to offer.

guys its a resources issue plain and simple. 250 individuals with the same deadline. 2 laser cutters. do the math.

Just for the record , I didn't write any of that -Ali

  • hahahahahaha! that's great XD

  • My friends and I have a suggestion to offer. We were at lunch and talking about how, through CFY, we have become friends with people who might be going into a different COA major but then you finish CFY and it seems like each of us will go our own separate ways, concentrating on our own majors, without having the chance to talk again. We wanted to suggest doing some kind of class for all three majors that we would have to take, similar in format to the 1012 lectures this semester, were we could discuss issues relevant to all three fields and catch up with the friends we made. That way, like I said, there would still be an element of interaction between all the majors (vis a vis the integration lectures) and not simply everyone going into their own separate majors.
    • I agree.
    • Requiring us to spend money on a class we don' t want to take because you're too lazy to keep up with your friends and not diverse enough to leave your major sounds like an awesome idea. Here's an idea: Throw a party and talk about issues there in the company of friends, food, and booze. Then watch as the kid who withdrew this semester lights his model on fire and runs off in his birthday suit.
      • Erudite much ? You replied to a suggestion with sarcasm and a condescending tone. Good job. How bout trying to compose a counter-argument instead of a semi-cooked attempt at humor ? I mean , it could be a one credit class once a week right ? We are talking about some actual discourse and multi-disciplinary networking that is facilitated by people who know what we are supposed to learn. You're paying a fixed amount anyway, why not take a class that would be of actual use ? Furthermore, and I apologize if this isn't the best argument, but who's sticking the gun to your head ? If you want to go set a model on fire and discuss BC go ahead, we want some actual dialogue.
        • It was a counter-argument if you read between the lines. 1. Requiring it is ridiculous. 2. You shouldn't need help keeping up with friends. If you don't keep up with them, theyre not really your friends. 3. Learn to discuss life and your passions outside of the classroom. 4. Learn to get out of school and socialize. Not trying to be condescending, but at least think about what you say from someone else's perspective. It's an important skill and if you get defensive and never learn it, you'll be worse for it. Your suggestion is sticking the gun to our heads by suggesting it should be required. Nobody should have to spend money on your mistake. Look up opportunity cost to understand why you're not "paying the same amount anyway." A little ironic coming from someone discussing how they don't have time to go outside of their major. One credit hour is one credit hour. Studio is only 4 credit hours. Does it feel like "only 4" to you? The fact you are getting defensive about a humorous suggestion to loosen up and have fun says something. Clearly, you understood my point as you've erased that it would be required from your suggestion. My post served its purpose.

MISSING iPOD
I think someone may have picked up my ipod by accident. it's a new classic, 80GB, black iPod. It's named "luliloo". if found PLEASE call!!!!!

Hey Everyone! So I've been noticing recently that there are a TON of plastic bottles/containers that get thrown away in studio (I do this too), and I realized that it is most likely because we don't have a convenient place to put them. I was wondering if anyone knew if they separated the trash/recyclables when they collect it from studio, or if it all goes to the same place. If the latter is true, I think it would be a really good idea to start recycling!! Yay! My family gets our recycling (plastic/newspaper) picked up every week, so if I brought the bag that we put it in, I would totally be willing to bring it home every weekend, because I only live about 10 minutes away. Just tell me what you all think! Thanks!
  • Morgan Chislett
    • I would agree but only on the condition that laundry is part of the agreement... but seriously its a pretty good idea.
    • I just realized that I have seen a blue recycling bin in studio (near the door)...does anyone know if it is for paper only? I think I've seen other things thrown in there but that may just be a mistake by the thrower -MC oh and p.s. no laundry duties, sorry :)

Ironically enough (after the talk we just had about diversity), Architecture was ranked as #34 on the "Stuff White People Like" list. On top? Our other favorite, coffee. Check it out: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/2008/01/28/34-architecture/

So you think that just because "white" people in general tend to like something means that it's not diverse? Should we have diversity for the sake of diversity or should we have it because we honestly want those of all cultures and races and genders to blend together?

BTW Anyone else notice how similar White Room by cream is to studio life ?
In the white room with big windows in the COA.
Redbrick country, no gold pavements, tired student.
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawnlight smiles on me leaving, my frustration.

Ill wait in this place where the work's never done;
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves.

You said no strings could secure you at the studio.
Messy models, smudged up arches, goodbye bedroom.
I walked into such a sad time at the studio.
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.

Ill wait in the queue when the scanners are used up;
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves.

At the CoA she was kindness in the hard crowd.
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten.
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes.
Shes just drafting, goodbye bedroom, tired students.

Ill sleep in this place with the lonely crowd;
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves.

one of the big scanners is not working. its the big one next to the instructor's flat files. it wouldn't work from my user name or my friend's user name.

And in non-Leeland/Ali news,
'Every time you design a piece of junk in plastic, God kills an albatross.' -BBC

This part was written by Leeland
What to make of Andres Duany.....
  • He invalidated most of my architectural education and curriculum.
  • He contradicted himself many times- "Architects should be architects that only design regionally." & "The worst thing an architect can do is become specialized."..... "Globalization is bad." invalidates "Globalization is actually is good in the respect that we can learn from other cultures."
  • He came about in almost a Taoist fashion in that he was taught that everything has intrinsic value, but then defames many architects with whom he does not agree. He then goes on to say that one of the reasons that Modern architecture has failed to push the masses is that we are defaming each other or one-upping each other with buildings we build. So its okay if you are negative, but make sure you are negative for the wrong reason? Are we allowed to say that anyone did anything right?
  • A project should be done in 6 days? Tell him to whip up an arches of the things he has already built in 6 days, and then ask him to design and then represent it as a selling point of his work in 6 days.
  • He invalidated basically architecture in our modern way of thinking to be one of artistic representation and one of informing experiential qualities. How could someone design a building in a week without investigating all of the possibilities?

But I fundamentally agreed after I got over my initial resentment of his affirmation of the market dictating the only way in which i design.
  • I think architects are far too worried about out-designing each other and far too worried about some critic thinks of him.
  • We must change our way of thinking about projects being stand-alone projects. Will we see a transformation much like the transformation from the Beaux Arts to the modernist curriculum. I do not know.
  • I agree that the wonderful challenge of our lifetime will be one of how to design in a fashion to accommodate our billions of people in an ecological way.
  • I feel like we must engage the middle class. That was an interesting point.
  • The notion of the Icarus house being ove-rdesigned. Did anyone see how simple and yet beautiful the German house was? Oh and it also won the competition.

I think the most valuable (and there were many) lesson tonight was that we can and should learn more from people we disagree with than people with whom we agree. I wanted to write off Mr. Duany, but I think that I learned deeply about my values (architectural, ideological, and social) through my taking offense to some of his rants, and my utter admission of my own shortcomings.

LEELAND MCPHAIL DID NOT WRITE THE BELOW QUOTES.
quotes:
  • "care not for the opinions of others"
...arrogance?
  • "let the market decide"
...group think?
  • "simplicity = compatibility"
conformity? ...wait... what about your choices?
  • "expressive= complicated"
...individualism?
  • "REALITY REALITY REALITY... this is REAL"
...define "real" please?
  • "ECONOMICS"
...our new religion?
  • "form is not important"
... excuse me what?
  • "terrible shit made by the government"
... proportions please?

end of NOT LEELAND MCPHAIL'S quotes

I liked it a lot, he clarified a lot of what he said after the lecture. While I find his opinion of Palladio a bit disconcerting I believe I understood the context in which he explained it. I will also say he kind of went back and forth on some points, but I feel those are far more preferable than the "this is modern, this is architecture, love it or leave it" kind of vibe I've been getting from studio. His whole notion of not writing someone off, and being more inclusive (not only with regards to styles but different disciplines) is very much in line with what we are learning. I wonder what Tristan Al Haddad thought of his comment about the use of plastics. I loved the way he pretty much broke down a lot of the megalomaniacal aspect that seems to torment our industry. As for globalization, I understood what he said within the context that you must understand the culture you are working with when designing. While there is a strong movement towards homogenization going on, the market will shift towards the vernacular than the McDonald's in every street and a Coke in every hand. It certainly addresses that horror that is Dubai, and the future generations that will be like "Yea its nice, but I'd never live there". I thought the 6 days thing was drastic, but I had we asked him for clarification it would have made more sense. His point was removing our ego from the process and being able to produce something efficient and within timetables than stalling and wasting money by not delivering on TIME (as far as I understood it). Maybe its just me; any particular opinion Prof. Khan ? - Ali
  • Edited to remove the gratuitous use of "I think" - Ali

End of Ali

...Gratuitous use of "I think" is intrinsic to the way I identify myself within my world. I did it too. We all do it. "I think therefore I am." People far smarter than you or me. Its a blogotype, Ali. I think many of us fall into the gratuitous (or not gratuitous?) use of ANY tense of "I think." In all seriousness Ali, thanks for the awareness. I'll watch for that, as I too know it sounds more uneducated than I would like. Wait a second. According to Andres Duany, I shouldn't care what anyone thinks about me, even a dear friend such as yourself (and you should not even care about this). But some might consider that being a manifestation of ones ego, which Andres says that we as architects must mitigate... yet another contradiction? I THINK thats all.

end of leeland

Well I mainly posted it mainly because I edited it for horrid grammar, and just wanted to make clear to anyone that read it that I changed it after I posted it without changing what I said. Basically it did that to say "yea I changed it, but I didn't change what I was saying". Certainly everything I say goes under "this is what I take from this" title. So I didn't do it to criticize your work in ANY way. As for Duany's point his point wasn't not to listen to what other people think, its to filter who we choose to empower. He definitely felt we should listen to the opinions of clients , just not the critics. Remember the point about the 60 million vs 6. His point wasn't "well now I can do whatever I want cause you don't know anything" , his point was "Why should I listen to you if you're neither paying me , nor designing buildings". at least thats how I got it. Not caring wasn't the point, if it was then he wouldn't we talking since he clearly wanted people to get something from him (if people didn't care they wouldn't listen", his point was lets be careful to empower those who are only detrimental to design.

As for the person who put those quotes up, its certainly interesting but they lack context and only make what he says seem weird. Half of your points make sense within the context he present them in. One of the basic tenets of Islam is to say "There is no God but God". Taken out of context I can quote "There is no God". Whoops ?

I'm not going to argue points about what Mr. Duany said, discount any of his claims, nor necessarily praise anything that he said. That is not as important as keeping this stir alive that we, as students, need to make sure that we are seeking the most prevalent and useful architecture education possible. In coming to this program, I assumed, as with many of the programs at this institute, that the job world would be seeking out our classmates because of our raw-bones, technical, and very honest grasp of our craft; its the reason that it is such a co-op driven school. However, if the needs of this country and the market our changing, as should the program. We should not erase the CFY we have already gathered. We should instead wake up for our Econ, sociology, and psych courses, actually take in the whole picture, and figure out a direction that will be useful in the bridge between the urban sprawl and a new future for the great deal of building that will be done with our degrees.

I'm rambling. Duany spoke extremely well, I thought, and did his part to cause that very collegiate thought process going that is "what can we do to progress and make things better." I just know that I have a lot of reading to do.

wade

very nice. and Ali, at this point I realize that:
1. you were not correcting me.
2. I really need not regard your opinion on the grammar of my content
& 3. In the context of his rant, I really should care not about what even thinks about me. He is a critic, critiquing my education based on his rational, which is based on his perception and his synthesis of the world regarded through his senses, lenses, and filters. Most of which is entirely subjective. It is okay to listen to some people but not some according to his speech. I would like to take it a little further (and I already did in my original closing statement about Duany). We must listen to everyone, not to just those we hold in our highest esteem like you do with Duany. When we only listen to those of our highest esteem and the people who pay us (most of whom many do not want great design, but income-generating design), we narrow our view to only things we mostly agree with. I can listen to everyone and then disregard things that I find fundamentally wrong. But I need not actually disregard those things, because I can learn why a particular person might think those things and in what context and what environment(s) did that person come to believe those things which they hold so valid. And here is the kicker: what if for one second i can get over the ego of my established ideals, to learn maybe I am on the wrong side of the argument. That is something from which I could grasp from Duany's rant. Take evreything with a grain of salt, but do take everything.

In closing I wish to write only this: A great teacher is like a finger pointing at the moon; if we concentrate too much at the finger we miss experiencing the moon.

leeland

Sounds good to me. Also, I love that expression.

Ali

Considerations in argument (Nothing you don’t already know)
  • All words have context.
  • Context can validly change within a single speech and on multiple scales. Pay attention.
  • Any argument against words that you have pulled out of context is not an argument at all.
  • Do not confuse an argument of ideas with an argument of syntax.
  • Superficiality. Don’t even…

  • Miscommunication is always possible.
  • Argument is based in reason, not based in you.
  • Argument that is based in reason needs no name.
  • In the same sense, argument is not personal.
  • Argument is not a battle but a thought process.
  • There are no feelings of offense in argument.
  • There is no complaining in argument.
  • Human being’s are fallible.
  • You are fallible.
  • That’s why argument exists.
  • Nothing you don’t already know. Just soapboxin’
  • Also, not altogether irrelevant:
  • “Don’t complain. Don’t explain” - Henry Ford
  • “By the end of the day, the only person you have to answer to is yourself.”
~ Oz

Who are these Leeland/Ali people and why are they taking up so much space in the soapbox?

  • They are architectural Gods.

Hmmm...Never heard of them, they must not be that great of gods.

  • Eh, maybe not gods, but gunslingers, definitely.
  • whatever they are, i'm pretty much obsessed with them.
  • appreciation of the way other people see the world is so much more beneficial than the obsession of the people themselves

please leave all work in the atrium exhibition in place. it is being digitally documented for the coa archives this week. if you need access to it over the weekend, please e me (ann.gerondelis@coa.gatech.edu). but don't be alarmed by the gaps on the wall - your work is safe and sound. thanks, ag.
  • Thank god! I thought I was gonna get a ransom letter soon.
  • s a v e me!

it's too nice outside to be in studio.

Ok, so I know I should know this, but where is the lost and found for the building at large? I left my thumbdrive in the third floor computer lab Wednesday and its no longer in there so I need to know where to look for it.
  • ask the sec'y at the dean's office, 2nd flr, top of the stairs on your left.

Check out the work of the historic preservation students in the atrium. The drawings and journal write ups on buildings you are studying as the modern academic village are fascinating. Enjoy!

Death Defying Architecture from the NY Times

Cool Pic. Sleepy Jack.

If you like the Death Defying Architecture link you may want to investigate Friedensreich Hundertwasser. (A book on him was just recently republished after a few years of being out of print)
He says, "A lively, uneven floor in the public area means a regaining of the human dignity which man is deprived of by the levelling tendencies of urbanism. A crucial experience has been taken away from him....People also have a sense of touch in their hands and feet...If human beings have to walk on flat surfaces the way they are thoughtlessly conceived with the ruler in the designer offices, alienated from his natural relationship with the earth which goes back to the dawn of time, from the contact with the earth, a crucial part of man is blunted, with catatstrophic consequences for his psyche, his emotional balance, his well-being and health" (from Sensory Design by Malnar and Vodvarka)

Are we going to know what major we got before we register for classes(next Wednesday)?
ALL OF YOU HAVE YOUR FIRST CHOICE. if you havent already spoken with the academic advisor of the program of your choice, please do so asap so that you can go over the soph course plan. sk

Is there a time and date set for the 1012 lecture final? If there is could we get that?

Did architects really come up with green design? Or was it a court ordered solution to counter-act the number of trees used to make handouts?

Congratulations COA... you finally made me assume the fetal position and cry for my "mommy" all night long!

What kind of % bonus will the cad classes and the optional exam give?

Whats this about an optional exam????

If anyone finds a cannon camera in a black case let me know!

I have also lost a knife in studio. It would have been left on the end closest to the black boards on the second chunk of desks away from the inside door. It is a pink/red husky fold out knife with a clip on it. If anyone finds it or has it, please put it in the lost and found. Thanks!

Broken/Fallen Models
On Friday (4/18,) a mockingbird flew into studio and landed on many models around the room before exiting about an hour later; a few models fell off the shelf because of this–they should be sitting on the table next to the windows (farthest to your left when you come in the studio door.) One of the models broke upon landing.. I apologize very much to everyone on behalf of the bird and hope your models be all right.. D:

if my model is broken, heads will roll.

CAD CLASS CANCELED MONDAY 4/21
I will be in reviews all day Monday so there will not be a CAD tutorial. For those of you in the Monday class please do your best to attend one of the other classes next week, I will be going over the final assignment and tying up any loose ends. If you cannot make it to one of the other classes email me and we can work something out.

CAD TUTORIALS: worth 12.5% of the course grade. (thats 50% of the 4th credit hour); get a P on CAD and get an A;
optional takehome final exam will be emailed to all of you on friday. the exam will be due back on tuesday. the questions will be based on the lectures during lecture hour during the first few weeks of this semester. the grading will be explained in the exam handout. sk

i thought that the CAD tutorials were extra credit. what about those of us who are not taking the tutorials?

Wait, so if I've got a 78.5 % in studio and get a P I make an A ?
  • I think they mean that its a guaranteed 12.5 %, if you've got a 78.5 % in studio then thats 78 out of 78%.
    • Ok, so what grade do I need to have in studio to make an A?
      • If your studio grade is worth 87.5% then I think you need a 77 / 87.5, right? If so, that means you need an 88 in studio for an A.

I would like to make a friendly recommendation for the sakes of all our sanity's. I suggest that an email be composed and sent out to all CFY students that contains a grade breakdown for this semester's session, including the "lecture" related content. Something akin to what would be found on a syllabus, and that clearly states how optional assignments impact the grades, an example grade calculation would also help clarify. It would probably be good to touch on the impact on students who havent taken tutorials and those who have stopped taking tutorials. I think something along those lines would answer alot of questions, reduce stress, and having it come out on in an offical email would ensure us of its validity. The Soapbox cannot always be trusted. RM

- but in order for this to happen, they would have to know how they are actually calculating the grade in the first place

anyone know how to contact the CAD Tutorial guys? (specifically the Wednesday guy)

I'm the Wednesday guy...shoot me an email: cvankley3@gatech.edu

Any body want to go window shopping this weekend?

Yes.

Okay here's how the extra credit works...
So it's 12.5% of the last credit hour of studio (which is 4 credit hours)
So each credit hour is worth 25%
Therefore the CAD tutorial is worth 12.5% of 25%...
Making it just a little more than 3% added to your grade.
So if you do both the CAD tutorial (and pass) and the optional exam, you can get a total of 6% extra.

  • Here's where you're wrong. In the previous soapbox, Sabir said the CAD was 12.5% of the final course grade, not 12.5% of the last credit hour. It's HALF of the final credit hour, and one half 25% = 12.5%. Therefore, it is 12.5% bonus credit

cody's eatin' it.

  • optional exam?!??

what is the optional exam??? when was this discussed???? what!?

The CAD is 12.5% of the the 4 credit hours minus the extra one hour for the lecture and CAD. That makes 3 hours of 12.5% as bonus to your grade plus the optional exam that calculates to 12.5% of the 1 credit hour for the lecture. The CAD is 12.5% of 25% of 12.5% for the lecture of 75% for studio adding up to 12.5% of the 12.5% for the CAD. This can then be added to your 12.5% bonus for your OPTIONAL lecture grade which is and automatic 3% coming from the 12.5% of 25% which is about 3% added to your grade. Studio plus CAD plus the Optional Exam equals out to 106% if your score a perfect 100% in all categories. Chill out kids. You will get your bonus. -MD

The CAD class today ran into a scheduling conflict with the CFY competition. So I won't be counting off if you missed the class today to see the competition winners announced. I will try to post some additional docs on the tutorial page to summarize what we covered in class today.

Please list your studio section/instructor in the bottom right-hand corner of the 24x36 paperspace layout you are creating for the final CAD assignment
