Taylor, Oreta : AssignmentsAssignment 10.2810.10 Introduction to Architecture Playback The most important roles of an architect has in designing buildings are to: shape social access to power, define the spaces as public or private, to give expression to cultural and social values, and to re-present the world in the context of this one city Look Up
The biggest difficulty for architects seems to be the idea of designing in order to re-present the world. The world is a big place and the idea of trying to put that much meaning in one building seems daunting. 10.15 Introduction to Building Construction Playback The biggest concept in Building Construction is seeing the process and life cycle of the building holistically from the stakeholders perspectives, so as to be effective at facilitating communication between the different levels. Look Up
In order to be effective at Building Construction you must know a lot about a very broad range of things. The biggest difficulty I would see is just trying to access all the information and make connections to them in a way to give proper “translations” of what the contractor means to the owner, and what then owner wants to the contractor. 10.22 Introduction to Industrial Design Playback The main focus of industrial designers is to think about the user and how the human interaction is what defines and gives the object value Look Up
The main difficulty in industrial design I see is the function of the object limiting the amount of designs for the product greatly. There are only so many ways you can design a hammer, for instance, before you start being repetitive. It seems really easy for many industrial designers to get caught up with what has already been done and not see all the possibilities. Assignment 09.09 8.29 Classical Architecture The Classical Architecture presentation explained overall topics and terminology of classical architecture through pictures of their different structures. Questions raised included were about the similarities and differences in traditional and classical architecture and whether or not they were considered “green”. This presentation was very successful due to the fact that they were not merely explaining, but asking many questions along they way, making us think. One of the things mentioned in this lecture was how classical architecture related to the know popular idea of the designs being “green”. It seems that they are inherently more green than contemporary designs mostly because they used what they had instead of creating these new, stronger building materials. This idea is something that the professional world of architecture struggles with. It is easier to think about being environmentally friendly in the disciplinary aspect of architecture, but to actually make money selling designs is different. People like what they like. It is expensive to be environmentally friendly, and the general public knows what they like, and expensive usually isn’t included in that. 8.31 Solar Decathlon The Solar Decathlon lecture took us through the making of the house, starting with concepts then from framing all the way to landscaping and presentation of the house in the contest. The struggles with this contest were finding a design that was affordable for the common American, as well as being environmentally friendly and something that would work under the rigorous daily conditions that a house has to go through, and being portable. Using different materials was sometimes needed because the normal material was not environmentally friendly, such as the use of aerogel instead of normal insulation. 9.05 Digital Design and Manufacturing This lecture included so may different aspects of digital design. He talked about the actual conception of designs using a digital media, as well to actually make physical designs conceived of on paper. He used very complex terminology. Link to this Page
