AMERICA I just got back from a gnarly road trip from Atlanta to Memphis, Little Rock, Tulsa, Amarillo, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Four Corners, Denver, Topeka, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chattanooga. This country has so many amazing cities and such beautiful scenery that is overlooked. My favorites were Little Rock, Albuquerque, Phoenix, and Denver, all for different reasons. Little Rock is a really clean city with lots of skateboarders and they have a Peabody hotel that has little ducks swimming in the water fountain/pool in its lobby! There are some beautiful antebellum houses and buildings there that really bring you back in time. Albuquerque is full of life and the buildings are all light clay-colored with obvious Mexican influences. There was a huge Latin American church celebration the day I was there and the vibrant music added to the city's life. This city was also really clean and safe. If you drive on I-40 west of the city, the landscape is beautiful: a city nestled in the toes of the southern Rocky Mountains. This is truly a sight to behold, especially at sunset (my favorite time of day). Phoenix is an amazing (and amazingly hot) city. While there were homeless people sleeping in one of the city parks, there's a section called "Copper Square" where there are a lot of helpful tourist information people. They wear bright orange shirts and help you find your way if you're lost, point you in the right direction if you're not sure, or give you suggestions for what to do. The buildings are adobe-influenced, like in Albuquerque, but the clay color is somewhat darker. This was the first time I had ever seen cacti and they were out of this world, exactly how I had seen them in pictures! The drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff brings you from desert to the mountains and people fly at 90mph inches from cliffs that would send you plummeting to your death. The drive to Denver from the west on I-70 is breathtaking. You'll drive from red-clay geologic structures like mesas and plateaus (it must look very similar to Mars) to redwood-covered mountains that are bare on the top where the snow resides for most of the year. The highway crosses the Colorado River a handful of times, which is a majestic beauty of its own. After a grueling up-down roller coaster that lasts for too many hours, the mountains start to recede and in comes Denver. Although it's sprawled almost as bad as Atlanta, the 16th Street Market is the place to be: light rail mixes with trains and pedestrian traffic along a stretch of shopping and eating delight. The rest was kind of a blur: 4,500 miles in 5 days leaves you tired by the end! I recommend a trans-continental road trip to everyone, especially those on a budget. Candice Bullard New York City NYC is fabulous city for young people!! Don’t ride a Statue of Liberty Ferry..It’s very expensive..You can just ride a free ferry at south ferry station (located on the subway station). Also, across Brooklyn bridge from Brooklyn side not from Manhattan (the view is better!!). Don’t miss great museums in NYC such as MoMA, Guggenheim, and Metropolitan. Gyeong Kim Ireland Sometimes called the “Island of Saints”, Ireland, to me, is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Whether you’re listening to the talent belting its heart out on the streets of Dublin, or enjoying the green countryside, every moment is intoxicating. If you enjoy more urban settings, I would suggest the South-West, Dublin area, as it is built up. But if you prefer visiting the country folk of the emerald hills, head down the Dingle Peninsula, or up to Giant’s Causeway. You can’t go wrong. And if you ever need a bite to eat, stop in the local pub. Chances are they’ll have wonderful soup to cheer you up. Hope it helped. slàinte Patrick O'Connor Bern, Switzerland This is a neat city! I didn’t see too much of the city because actually, I only went to see Zentrum Paul Klee from Renzo Piano. This is one of the coolest buildings! I spent an hour just walking around it. The weather was abnormally perfect and the light was crisp, so the building looked really dynamic. Next time you're in Europe go see it! Audrey Plummer Definitely travel to Spain if you ever get the chance. Aside from awesome shopping, amazing beaches, and beautiful Europeans, Spain has some incredible art museums and tons of impressive buildings and cities to visit. Rebekah Hogue The most exciting place I have ever been (so far) is Northern Ireland. Not only is the country beautiful, but the people are so friendly and fun. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed among teens because they are allowed to drink and use tobacco whenever their parents choose to let them, so teens are less rebellious and families are more tightly knit. I would recommend Northern Ireland to anyone who wants to see beauty in nature and have lots of fun doing it! Katy McCants I've heard that Prague, Czech Republic, is one of the most beautiful countries in the whole world. Not only does the country have an amazing culture, but the architecture is simply fascinating. Personally, I have never traveled there, but the pictures are truly priceless. Although the country is not known for anything specifically historic, the charm of this historic European town is truly indescribable. Kalinke Lydia Mali, West Africa I went to Mali, West Africa on a mission trip for 10 days this summer. Visiting Mali or any third-world country and living among the people is an experience that everyone should have in order to appreciate the life we live in the United States. It is definitely a journey I want to make again. Adrienne Bozeman Nina Perala Finland My family is from Finland and we visit every year. It is one of the cleanest, safest countries in the world. Almost everywhere you go, people will speak English and are extremely friendly. If you like fresh berries, salmon, or ice cream, Finland is the place to be. Their main export is cruise ships, so if you’ve ever been on a cruise before, it was most likely made in Finland. If given the chance, everyone should visit this beautiful country! Scotland is one of the best places I've ever been. I went with an exchange program at my high school for a couple weeks. It was a lot of fun. The castles were amazing and the landscape was beautiful. Sloane Beeco Lucerne, Switzerland: This summer I traveled all over Europe with a group of about forty friends led by a student-education tour group named Explorica. We traveled to many beautiful places both physically as well as culturally, including England (London), France (Paris, Versailles, Chartres & Loire Valley), Switzerland (Bern, Lucerne, Mt. Pilatus), Italy (Florence, Verona, Venice, Assisi, Rome, Capri, Sorrento, Pompeii), and Greece (Patras, Delphi, Athens). As awesome as all of these places are my favorite was most definitely Lucerne, Switzerland. Lucerne has a very small town feel and it was the only city that I felt like I was actually safe in, without fear of pick-pockets. The food was amazing, especially the fondue and Swiss chocolate. There are many cool restaurants and bars as well as an array of shopping stores that sell merchandise much cheaper than anywhere else we went. There is also a cool lake in the middle of the "downtown" area that people love to go swimming in. Also, I would suggest the most beautiful boat ride ever to Mt. Pilatus, a tall peak that overlooks the towns and landscape of Switzerland. For any more information on my favorite town in Europe or any of the others I listed, do not hesitate to email me at andrewh@gatech.edu Andrew Harmon Link to this Page
