Updates
Caitlin, please check your email....I am missing your 5th street essay and need to confirm that you didn't turn it in, rather than it perhaps getting misplaced. Please email me ASAP about this as grades needed to be turned in yesterday
11/18/07 Update:
Alright folks, here is the plan for finishing up the semester. Since this is a holiday weekend you should focus primarily on finishing up the 5th street essay and perhaps start thinking about the final. I will be posting the final presentation format for the research project by this Wednesday (hopefully) and will also try to give individual comments to each group at around the same time. I'll need your final powerpoints by MONDAY DECEMBER 3rd, I will be presenting it in class that Wednesday and need a day to look over all the final information. We will have one more preceptorial before the powerpoint is due that will be used primarily as a Q&A session. All of your information will need to be completed by DECEMBER 10th, which in addition to the powerpoint will be a well organized group folder and additional peer and individual elvaluations that will require more reflection than the first.
If any group's have questions please let me know. With our class size and limited class time it is very difficult for me to give much individual time to each group, but I am more than willing to meet with you outside of class.
I will post grades for Library 101 and the extra credit assignment over the Thanksgiving break. You'll know where you stand in the class going into the final.
11/15/07 Update:
We will meet on the bridge Friday for the pinup. Please be there on time and have your materials printed out before class. We have a limited amount of time to get through all the groups so I want to make the most of it.
11/7/07 Update:
1. Please fill out the Group and Personal Evaluation forms and email them to me by this Sunday @ midnight. These should not take you more than 30min.
2. We will NOT be meeting for preceptorial this Friday (11.09), instead everyone will be in the auditorium for a lecture. So our pin-up will be moved back to next Friday, your information will need to be more or less complete by then. If any of the groups wants to meet with me before next Friday please let me know.
PLEASE PUT YOUR POWERPOINT FILES FOR TOMORROW'S CLASS IN YOUR GROUP'S FOLDER WITHIN OUR SECTION'S COURSE FOLDER.
EACH GROUP'S FOLDER FOR THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL BE PUT IN OUR COA 1060 C FOLDER, WITHIN THE WORK-AREA FOLDER SO THAT YOU CAN EDIT THEM.
10/4/07 Update:
1.In case you didn't notice, we are meeting in the auditorium tomorrow. If there is time we will break up into the preceptorials after a group lecture.
2. Preceptorial meeting schedule will be changing again, I will update the schedule on this page once it is set in stone.
3. I am working on grades for HW4 and the Midterm. I'm heading to D.C. for the SolarD this weekend so you probably won't see midterm grades till the end of next week, homework to follow.
4. THE research project is the next big event in 1060. We will go into more detail in the next few preceptorials.
9/26/07 Update:
Tips on preparing for the midterm:
1. Use all your resources and use them concurrently(@ the same time). What I mean is get your notes,HW assignment, practice questions, and vocab for a lecture and then run through that lecture's powerpoint while you go through all your material. I think this will help rather than trying to split up the powerpoints from the vocab, from the...you get the idea.
2. Remember that the exam is 25min. long so all the questions are going to be short answer (1-2 sentence max) keep this in mind when you are studying.
3. Don't get too stressed out, the midterm is important, but it is 10% of your total grade, not life or death.
4. If anyone feels like another review session on Thursday night would be helpful let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Please unlock your assignment pages so that I can post comments for assignment 3.....
9/21/07 Update:
The Solar Decathlon house is heading to D.C. this coming weekend. I would like to let you guys take a tour of the house before it rolls out. I know you're busy next week, but if anyone is interested in going out to the IPST for 30min. or so next week post in the Q&A section when you have some free time. Its lousy timing and will be tough to schedule but I'm just throwing it out there...
1. Midterm will be held in Room 309 next Friday.
2. I will post an example of A quality work for assignment 2. Also, please take a look at the general comments I have listed for the assignment. If you still have a question about your grade send me an email and we can discuss it on a case by case basis.
3. I will find out if you need to know the names of the presenters for each lecture. If you have any questions about the specifics of the midterm that we didn't discuss today in class please post it in the Q&A at the bottom of the page.
4. If you didn't receive the email I sent out this morning please send me the correct address. (I pulled them off of your 1011 pages)
5. I am trying to make individual comments on Assignment 3. So I may not get it back to you till next Monday, but I think this will help you more than just seeing a grade on a spreadsheet. My comments will be posted in red in your assignment page on coolx.
9/17/07 Update:
For those of you interested in some very 'natural' sustainable design take a look at this link: http://www.andrewmaynard.com.au/poop.htm#
I will post Assignment 3 grades over the weekend.
9/14/07 Update:
Since we aren't meeting this week I wanted to hit a few points to consider for the 9/16 homework and our next preceptorial...
1. Homework Due on 9/16 - Pay careful attention to the changes made to the previous lecture response assignment you turned in last week. There are some significant differences here, you are building on assignment 2 not repeating it.
2. Mid-Term - There have now been two homework assignments dealing with the lectures. The mid-term will pull a lot of material from the lectures as well....look at the types of questions we are asking you to generate in the homework, you may not be answering them now but it probably wouldn't hurt to think about how you would do so.
3. For the next Preceptorial - Take a few minutes during the next week to look at the work of a design studio or class from one of the two majors you DO NOT currently think you will be joining after the CFY. You may already be set on a major, but approach this observation without bias. - Guess the picture above, win a prize -
Questions
Post any COA 1060 questions/comments here
I was wondering if there was a mistake in the class which I am in because my schedule tells me to report to room 107 in Miharu Morimoto's class yet my assignments are being graded by Chris Van Kley? This may present a problem because I will hear what one TA is looking for but the TA which grades my assignment might be looking for something else which I did not incorporate within my paper because I did not know.
Which COA 1011 section are you in? Sections D,D1, and D2 of COA 1011 are in Section C of COA 1060 which would be with me (Chris). If you are in Section D3 or E in 1011 then you are with Miharu in Section D of 1060, confusing I know. Whichever one you are in that will be the TA that grades your papers and the preceptorial that you should go to every other Friday. - Chris
I am in COA 1011 section D3 and have been reporting to TA Miharu's class but when I checked the grades, my assignment was graded by you (Chris). I guess I might have been cross listed somehow. My name is Ralph Raymond is you would like to check if my assignments are being graded by you. Please and thanks.
If you are in D3 then Miharu should be grading your assignments. I left her an email, we'll get it straightened out before Assignment 2 is graded. Thanks for letting me know. -Chris
Ok, Ralph your name on the "official class list" page has been moved to Miharu's section. She will be grading your assignments from now on, so you should be set. - Chris
Can we have a hint on the picture?
this may be too big of a hint....but one of the lectures actually referenced this building. - Chris
where should we post our answer?
we'll do it in the preceptorial, I'm thinking this could get expensive for me. -Chris
lol that hint was kinda giving
what do we need to do in order to get an A on our homeworks/papers from the presentations?
For some reason, I (Emily Ernst, eernst3@gatech.edu) have not been getting your e-mails.
Chris, double check our group, sci/tech, i am pretty sure ralph raymond and elliot patton are not in our class.
okay, sorry, my name is lance dudkowski
You're right about Ralph, we had him on the wrong roll for a couple of weeks so I'll take him off your research project page. I thought Elliot was in section D judging by your 1011 instructor's page and the roll I received at the beginning of the semester.
Elliot was in our section for the first couple of weeks, but he has quit showing up and no one has seen him for weeks now.
Tyler Phipps
Gotcha, well in that case I may ask someone from one of the groups that has 7 people to switch into Science and Tech. since you are now down to 5. It is a fairly broad category, we'll talk about it during precept on Friday.
Where are our midterm grades? Thanks
Done, sitting on my desk. Per Sabir we are not handing them back till NEXT Friday. I realize they keep getting pushed back, we don't want to post the grades without being able to review the test, so it will happen in next Friday's preceptorial.
Are we doing the 70s in the project or just up to 1970?
Will our grades in 1060 be curved at the end of the semester?
What is the link to the page that you showed us that had the cool timelines and ways to organize data?
- We are doing up to 1970
- I will confirm with Sabir but, no, I don't think your grades will be curved at the end of the semester, 10% of your grade is participation though which leaves room to bump grades up if they are close based on whether or not you have been showing up to class/participating.
- The website is called visualcomplexity, it is listed under my "Fun links" section on the righthand side of this page.
- CVK
Is this Pin Up the final Pin Up? Is pretty much everything due at this time?
No, it is not the final. You should be about 75-80% complete by Friday. I would like nearly all the actual research to be compiled and see some different methods of presenting the work between the groups. That way we can compare presentation methods to come up with something that will work for all the groups. It will also allow me to see how complete each group's research is relative to one another so I can offer more specific advice to each group before the final deliverables. So don't stress out too much about it, we will go over final requirements on Friday.
So everyone is clear, you DO NOT have to submit a draft of the 5th street essay to me on the 19th. If you would like me to review your essay I need a printed copy of whatever you have handed in during preceptorial on Friday. Again this is optional, the final essay is still due on 11.26
