CoWeb basics

These few rules are all you need to know to get started with the CoWeb. More advanced features are explained in the help guide (click on the help button in the menubar above).

  • You can just type plain text into the edit box. You can also type in HTML for some special formatting, but it is not necessary.

  • To create a link to a new page or an existing one, put it between asterisks (*Some Page Name*). This also works for external links, e.g., *http://www.arch.gatech.edu/*

  • To insert a horizontal line, type an underscore ("_") at the beginning of the line.

  • To make a list, type a dash ("-") at the beginning of each line in the list.

  • To add a comment box, type a plus ("+") at the beginning of the line.

  • If your link ends in 'gif','jpeg', or 'jpg', the image will appear in the page.

  • You can "attach" an image to a page, similar to how you might attach an image to an email message. To do this:
    • Go to the page where you want your image to appear.
    • Click "Attach" at the top of the page.
    • Click the "Browse" button and choose the file you want to upload from your computer or disk.
    • Click the "Upload" button. The name of your image should now appear in the list of attachments for that page. (P.S. You can ignore the other things on this page - the default choices work well for most situations.)
    • Click on "View" at the top of the page. Your image should appear at the bottom of your page. Try scrolling down if you don't see it.

If you want to move your image around in the page, click on "Edit". You will see something like *+yourfile.gif+* where your image appears in the page. Cut (or copy) and paste this into the page where you want your image to appear. The asterisk tells the CoWeb this is a link, the plus tells it to look in attachments, the file name tells it which file to use.

  • You can attach other kinds of files, too (Word documents, spreadsheets, CAD drawings) but they will only appear as links - they will not appear in the page. A person can click and save them on their own computer to look at them.

  • You can lock a page by selecting "lock this page" (below the Save button) and supplying a password that you create. Do not lock pages that you do not create. If you forget your password, ask the TAs for help.

  • If you want to receive an email when a particular page has been edited, click on "edit". Then type your email address in the appropriate box and click "save". Warning: this can generate alot of email if it's a busy page. You can stop getting email by removing your address from the box.
