Announcements:
We will meet in Room 207 Friday, October 26
By early Friday (10.12), group assignments will have been made for your 1060 research project. During class time, we will "draw from a hat" to determine which groups look at our buildings (more on that on Friday) through which "lens."
If you have not done so already, please make sure you have read the Library 101 tutorial and the information for the 1060 research project. Please post any questions you may have below, or bring them with you on Friday.
I am sure everyone is wondering when grades for the midterm will be posted. Very soon! is the only answer I have at the moment.
I hope everyone had a restful Fall Break. Welcome back.
Buildings from our era – 1910 until 1940
Architecturally speaking, its a fantastic time period to engage in study.

Questions
Hey, so...I still don't exactly understand what to do with the files that I find for the research project so I'm just gonna put the files on a flashdrive and bring it with me.
so... the homework is...?
Continue to collect and record information pertinent to your group assignments and place this information into your groups folder within the course folder. Also, for the groups that have yet to present something to the class, please prepare a powerpoint slide show. It does not have to be polished and "showy", but it should give an overview of your research to date. On Friday, we will begin to discuss the final project in terms of the required deliverables. This discussion will inform our activities for the remainder of the semester. Mitch.
I'm in the building and construction group, and you told us to look at a book in the library. Well, we already forgot what it was called. So what was the name, and where did you say we would probably find it?
I just wanted to double check - for the Architecture group, you want us to toss 3 of the 6 buildings that we have, and get 3 new ones that are more spaced out in years? Therefore, we're planning on keeping The Georgian Terrace Hotel (1911), D.M. Smith (1923), and Atlanta City Hall (1930). So the 3 other buildings need to be in between those, or do they just need to be different in styles??? Thanks!
For the Building Construction folks, look at Graphic Standards during 1910 - 1940, published by the AIA. For the architecture group, you are not neccesarily looking at different styles, but rather different expressions. These expressions could reinforce a "style;" they could reject or reinterpret the current "style." To answer these questions, look at the research you have done to date, you should find similatrities in architecture that seem to cut across all types of buidlings. Now, "zoom out" from Atlanta and find out what was happening on a larger scale, i.e. New York, Chicago, California, etc. Then "zoom out: further . . . Europe for example. Once you have an understanding of the architectural currents that were either running at full steam or were just beginning to trickle, "zoom in" back to Atlanta. Are there any architecural similarities at the "local" scale that resemble what is occuring at the larger scale? If so, grab those buidlings.
Also, don't trash three buildings; rather, find a representative group of buidlings that seem to reflect what was happening architecturally during our time period.
What is interesting is that this project will begin to answer the questions of Why are there new expressions appearing in Atlanta? What is driving it (Women's suffrage?, Ecoonomic Growth or Economic Dispair? Racial tensions? Fashion? Media?) These questions will be answered by other groups, but ultimately, we are trying to disscover the undercurrents of "Human Life," both at the individual scale, community scale, and even the world scale, so to speak, that inform the realization of our built environment.

Mitch, I don't know if we actually were told what we need to do for our projects in preceptorial, but if we were, would you mind posting it? thanks!
Hey everyone, I know this is a little late but if you have any extra time over the break, or just any time outside of studio=life, I found a site called www.atlhist.org that has some amazing resources on it. And if you have even more time, you can visit the Kenan Research Center (inside the Atlanta History Center on West Paces Ferry Rd.) for free (link on the atlhist site). They have a ton of architecture blueprint/image archives, old newspapers, magazines, etc.....very cool!
No problem. What each group needs to produce is a powerpoint presentation of your research. This can be accomplished several ways. I would suggest that each member of your group prepare a powerpoint specific to his/her research. Hopefully meeting with groups individually has better preapred each of you to tackle a single "category" within the larger group context. For example, in cultural production, one member is looking at newspaper Page 1 headlines in the AJC and Constitution, the New York Times, etc. over our time period. This person would prepare a powerpoint presentation revealing their findings. Another member of the same group is looking at gender as it relates to cultural production – they would prepare a powerpoint with their findings. Once all members have completed their individual elements, simply put them all together in one presentation. However, please have your individual presentation available in the course folder. Also, the groupp as a whole should prepare an introduction explaning your research process. For example, the cultural production folks would explain how they divided the work; which member of the group did what part, and perhaps any "general" conclusions that you feel is pertinent to the idea of time stamping. (I know this is getting long). Then, individually, you will be required to write a short essay detailing your understanding of the project as a whole. I have already alluded to the nature of the question you will be required to answer in the essay.
p.s. Grades will be posted shortly; I really, really, really, really, apologize.
Mitch
I also have a question about the citing. How can we do so if we don't have the information? And I know you said that you would e-mail the Building and Construction group over the break, and I haven't gotten anything. I was just making sure that I didn't miss the e-mail or something.
Are you expecting us to submit a "compressed powerpoint" of our photo album? its not a problem, i just wanted to know if that is something we're going to need to turn in on monday. thanks
yeah how do we site the articles when there are no authors?
Merica May Jensen
no one answered this question anywhere so i jsut left my citations out—i got stuff only from the readings so i guess its understood
Mitch! .. what it be?! .. it's grayson here.. just chillin .. taking care of some architecture/id business.. you know how it is! .. how's life treating ya?! .. i just had a quick question.. this essay we gotta write about our views on the project as a whole.. is that going to be our in class final?! or is that another paper?! .. just let me know whenever you get the chance.. ain't no thang.. peace out brotha..

The deliverables for the Research Project are as follows:
1. An individual PPT based on your research with references (where you found your information)
It is important to make sure that each image, or block of text can be traced back to its origin.
2. A Group PPT (compling the individual PPT's together)
3. A complete Reference list
4. A brief intro page for the Group PPT detainling how the research project was divided and which team member was responsible for each division
5. A brief answer to the question posted under "essay question" on the right side bar.
Any questions, please call me at 206.920.7902 (my home internet is down)
hey Mitch,
I'm not sure where we're supposed to post our "research essays," so I just made a new folder in my groups folder and saved it there. I'll tell the other fellas in my group to do the same unless you tell me otherwise. Have an awesome holiday.
Mitch, some of us have posted our reponses on the Essay Question page itself. I hope thats ok!
Hey! Will we have any idea about our grades before the actual reports are posted?
Yea! Tonight is the night for grades!!! Mitch
Mitch, you're an awesome TA! That spiel you gave on the importance of setting "rules" really helped me in Ex 3. Thanks, have a great break!
Mitch, do I remember you saying that you drop our lowest assignment grade...or am I completely making that up?
Essay and final exam grades will be posted shortly. Mitch
hey so are we going to get our grades for the final when we get our course grades on oscar? or will they be posted eventually?
