1060 setiawan1. My favorite lectures were the classical architecture, and solar decathlon. Classical architecture lecture let me see different perspective of the architecture as well as the solar decathlon lecture. 2. Among all the readings we had read, I found "The Street" most intriguing and interesting. 3. I liked the final research project because I was interested in provocative public builings. 4. a) summarize lectures; I did not like this assignment because it was hard to focus on the details of the lecture when I had to pay attention to the big part of the lecture. b) summarize readings; This assignment helped me to understand the readings better. c) essay writing (drawing upon readings and observations); It was a difficult assignment and I found it quite challenging, but it really helped me to understand and communicate with spaces. d) research; I liked this assignment since the building I researched was the one I was interested in. e) formulation/preparation ; This exercise could have been better if we had more time. 5. Yes, this was helpful to have a discussion class every two weeks. 6. I enjoyed them because of the fact that they led us student to see broader. 7. Yes. 8. I was suprised that we cover a wide range of topics. 9. My question was how to improve the school environment for people with disabilities. 10. I would like them to focus on how 'real' is the education is in college and how it helps. Jayeon Yee 1. I really enjoyed Craig Zimring’s presentation lecture on architecture, culture and behavior, especially when he began talking about the proposed ways of improving hospital rooms for patients, their families and nurses because you were able to directly see the benefits of good design. 2. I thought the readings we did on the street were informative and helpful when writing our own essays on 5th Street. 3. I thought our final assignment on 5th Street was the best. It caused us to think about our environment in a way we not normally, focusing on the details of our surroundings and how different people would interact with them. 4. Each assignment required us to call on a different kind of thinking. For the lecture summaries, we had to think back to the presentations and not only summarize what they had said and what their main points were, but further questions what and where the topics they had been discussing could lead. The essay writing required us to incorporate the readings, lectures on the street and city and our own observations into one essay. For the research project, we had to use many kinds of resources such as database sources to look at how the time period our building was built in affected how it was designed, built and used. For our final essay, we had to look back over everything we had done and formulate a new and unique question that stemmed from out studies. 5. Yes, it was good to talk with the person who was grading our assignments and get their feedback. However, I believe if they were more structured and there was a plan for what was supposed to be done during class, they would have gone more smoothly and efficiently. 6. It was helpful to get a better feeling for how to use databases and create a bibliography when doing research papers. 7. Yes. 8. It was surprising to learn how much the three different majors could share in common with one another. 9. How are communities being formed and shaping our world not only physically through New Urbanism developments but also in the integration of different disciplines? 10. Things that apply to all majors and not only one of the three. Paige Thomas Gyeong Kim 1. My favorite lecture was the one about CATEA because I can easily understand and focuse on that lecture. 2. “The Street” by Kostoff is the most interesting reading I've read. 3. The research project was the most interesting assignment. 4. a) summarize lectures: When I listened to the lecture, I have to think how can I summmarize the lectures. b) summarize readings: Also, I have to organize the readings so I can easily summarize them. c) essay writing: First, I have to read the readings. Then I have to decide what is my thesis. Then I have to observe the street. d) research: Constant observation and research on my building. e) formulation/preparation of a question: I spent a lot of time on thinking process because I need to formulate my question. 5. Yes, it was helpful. We can ask questions and GTA helped us keep on the track. 6. I think multiple part methodology is very important for someone who will design something, because we are going to design someting that will be used by various people. Thus, we need to think in multi-way. 7. Yes, I would be interested taking courses, over the next few years, that look at the designed and built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective. 8. The first assignment was the most surprising one, because I had no idea about two installations. 9. My question was how can I use the skills that I learned from COA 1011 as an architect? 10. I want to learn more about the history of the architecture. Patrick Bell 1) My favorite lecture was the introduction to building construction because it focused on a topic that was applicable to the entire working world and it was very logical. 2) I found “whtye – the skilled pedestrian” to be the most interesting 3) The fifth street essay was the most interesting to me because it forced us to indentify to multiple angles to view the street as not just a road but a system. It used similar skills that were used in 1011. 4) A) Summarizing lectures required us to indentify the complex issues and topic brought up and articulate them in the forms of summaries as well as questions B) Summarizing reading involved reading deeper into the issues that were presented and showing what is important about those issues and why those issues are important as well. C) Essay writing required the incorporation of several sources including our own observations in order to properly explain our points and support our arguments. The essay writing done was more of a research paper than a traditional essay. D) Researching the buildings required identifying important aspects and trends of the specific time period and how those aspects and trends changed throughout the time period and how the building’s construction changed as a result. Just finding unique aspects that made that building identifiable with the time period. E) Forming the question for the final required both broad and narrow thinking on the semester as a whole to find a question that was rich enough to pursue. 5) I found them helpful but more coordination between the TAs about what they were saying would be good. 6) I found some of them to be boring but they helped in the long run. This way of looking was probably emphasized to start from a basic level and work up in complexity. 7) No, am willing to work with other disciplines but I do not wish to learn about the world in that way. 8) The importance that was put on developing communication between related professions. I thought that that was already present, how can could it not be, it’s so important. 9) How would the efficiency or functionality of any given job be effected by the removal of any given form of communication? 10) How the different majors differ from each other and what interested them to get into that major. Zach Brown 1060 Exit Reflection 1) My favorite lecture over the course of the semester was the one on the solar decathlon. I would like to design a home similar to the solar decathlon in the future, but on a larger scale. For instance, one that could house a family of five or six, so not a single bedroom home. 2) The reading that I found most intriguing was “The Street” by Kostoff. It opened my vision of the street (Fifth Street to be exact) in a completely different way than what I saw beforehand. I was able to see the street for a variety of purposes instead of solely transportation. 3) The fifth street essay was the most intriguing or provocative because I feel I learned the most from this assignment. I learned the purpose of a street on a whole new level, and now see the built environment surrounding the street differently. 4) The lecture summaries allowed me to recap on the important facts presented in each lecture. By performing the summaries I was able to reabsorb the important information that should not be overlooked. The reading summaries had a similar importance to the lecture summary assignments. By summarizing the readings, I could gain a better understanding of the important information embedded in the words of each reading. Writing the essay provided the students with a wider view of the built environment. The fifth street essay, especially, because it opened our eyes to the realm or surroundings of the street and how they interact together or sculpt each other. The research on the buildings allowed us to understand the different design styles and social conditions that affected the built environment in the past. Formulating the question allowed us to be prepared for the final examination, but also to reflect on the semester as a whole and all the activities that took place. 5) The GTA bi-weekly discussions were very helpful, and I do recommend them for next year’s program. I enjoy the way they are; I have no recommendations for change. 6) I like the way that both studio and 1060 have opened my view of the world or broadened my horizons. The emphasis on this view of the world broadens the spectrum or prevents one from looking at the world from a single view. This process opens one’s mind to many possibilities and changes the view of the built environment. 7) Yes, I would be interested in taking courses that involve a cross-disciplinary view perspective because it opens one’s mind to an infinite amount of possibilities or doesn’t leave one looking at the world through a single view. 8) The range of possibilities or opportunities that exist in all three fields (Architecture, Building construction, and Industrial Design) was the most surprising take away from the course. 9) What steps are being made to bring the solar decathlon project’s abilities to a large scale such as in larger homes like mansions and office buildings? 10) I would like to see more on the actual projects taking place across the world, and presentations from architectural and building construction firms around the Atlanta area to gain a better understanding of what they do. Amyn Soldier 1. Amongst all the lectures my favorite one was with brian bowen and the AEC integration. 2. I thought the reading of "the street" was the most intriguing. 3. The final project on the decades and buildings time stamp research project around atlanta was most enjoyable to me because their was group work that made it fun and it was a more hands on experience rather than just typing up some homework. 4. a) summarizing lectures - Finding the key points and the most important highlights mentioned during the lectures b) summarizing readings - Locating and understanding the significance of certain material and finding the most valuable information such as the fifth street essay readings. Material that could prove useful in the essay c) essay writing - Breaking an essay down into a structure that is fluid and consistent and retains major points and sticks to the topic at hand d) research: extended group research on the way buildings are 'time stamped' - Organizing and dividing group work and being able to understand other teammates input and ideas. e) formulation/preparation of a question - Figuring out what was said all together in a broad sense during the lectures and what was significant from each and trying to tie them all together. 5. They were somewhat helpful. I enjoyed the fact that everyother friday we did remove ourselves from the big auditorium into a smaller class size. And having someone closer to our age answer questions about a lecture that sometimes was harder to understand was helpful as well. 6. It was interesting in that we took a different outlook on the world and from so many different sources such as reporters, victims, political figures and more. 7. Yes. 8. The fact that there are so many differerent disciplines and people involved in this major and we must learn to work with all of them. 9. My question was if we are training to become architects in our major and lifestyle when entering the real world and we have to world with so many different pedagogies why are we not introduced to engineers and managers and all these other professions starting with cfy. 10. I would like them to focus on what actually is done in the business environment and how they have to work with other pedagogies to accomplish tasks. Also where u work and how that may vary what kind of work you do. Lastly, what skills that we pick up during CFY and our undergraduate courses will be most beneficial to us later. Dave Duncan 1. Among the lectures, my favorite one was Sabir Khan’s lecture, “What makes great cities great” because, simply, I enjoyed learning about the topic. However, I also liked the lecture on AEC Integration and Architecture, Culture, and Behavior for the same reason. 2. I found The Solitary Stroller and the City the most intriguing because it was the first one I read that had to do with how the design a city can directly affect the people who live there. 3. I thought the Essay on 5th Street was the most intriguing and provocative because it made me think whereas the other assignments were more straightforward. 4. A) The summarize lectures had us thinking of questions, and doing the summaries. B) Summarizing the readings was just a matter of reading them, and summarizing them. C) The essay writing involved research and development of ideas that would be used in the essay. Then the writing had to be done. D) For the research project, we had to do extensive research at the buildings and at the library. Then we had to put our research together and develop our ideas into a coherent presentation. E) The final essay required us to reflect on the semester and develop our own question that was raised at some point during the year. Then preparing the essay made us think of how we could apply what we learned to the development and explanation of the question. 5. The GTA discussion periods were helpful. They gave us a chance to catch our and I would not change anything for next year. 6. I thought the multiple-part methodology for the assignments was great. I think this way of looking at the world was emphasized because there is an important sociological aspect of design. 7. I would definitely be interested in taking courses that look at the designed and built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective. 8. The most surprising thing I took away from this course was the idea that there is work going on towards AEC integration. 9. The question I posed for the final was the following: “Is there a natural connection between beauty and usefulness in design, or does is the designer responsible for all of the beauty?” 10. I would like the lectures in 1012 to focus on the different career options that the three majors provide. I would also like to learn more about the three programs here at Georgia Tech. Specifically, the courses and studios that are required and offered. Kok Lee1. Among all the lectures, I believe my favorite would be the “Disability Design and Research” by Steven Sprigle. This is because this lecture incorporates many interesting ideas regarding how we shape buildings and in return they shape us. Assistive technology and universal appeal are also some really intriguing topics I did not think before.2. “The Street” by Kostoff is probably the most interesting piece of reading I’ve read about architecture even though after reading this I did not have the time to finish the others. First off, this reading picks off of tiny details of the street that average people’s naked eyes would not be able to detect. Then it keeps my attention by revealing the intriguing reasons behind them and how tiny changes make a big difference. 3. This may sound funny but the usual critical listening assignments in the beginning are what intrigue me. These assignments are divided into three provocative sections where each one gets you thinking. The first section gets you to remember what the lecture was about so you’ll have to refresh your memory; then the second part gets you to pick out the important key points/terms and finally it forces you to be creative by asking your questions on the last part. 4. A) Summarizing lectures gets you to refresh your memory about the information you’ve absorbed thus you may be able to retain the knowledge within you for a long period of time. B) Summarizing readings however, forces your brain to capture the key points due to the fact most readings consist of many unnecessary filler. C) Whereas summarizing lectures and readings gets you to capture knowledge, essay writing makes you take out what you know and learned and present it out creatively; in other words, you must first learn and then draw out what you know and present it beautifully. D) Extended group research trains our mind into a sharper one that is able to identify buildings by key aspects. However, this is only the beginning and it has the potential to expand and apply to many situations. E) This is by far the most intense preparation I’ve had so far; first off, I didn’t have a clue of where to ask formulating a question, and pinpointing a good idea isn’t easy. After that, I had an intense debate against myself over the topic. This was hard before it isn’t easy trying to overcome my own idea. 5. The bi-weekly GTA sessions were definitely helpful but I feel like they can definitely be improved much further. First off, they were helpful because they’re like a break but at the same time they’re like preceptorials. These sessions can be improved if they can teach at the same pace. 6. I believe this method teaches you to look at things from a different standpoint; I mean that’s what being a designer is all about: if you don’t see the possibility here, just switch to a different point of view and you’ll get it. 7. This would certainly be interesting since cross-disciplines is and will be an important subject in the near future. I believe it will be something we all have to go through and it’s inevitable. 8. The most surprising take-away from this course would be the new perspective I’ve gained; I am now able to my surroundings with a new respect due to the fact that I am much aware of the tiny significant details. 9. What is the importance of integration within the construction industry, and why isn’t everyone doing it if it’s so beneficial? 10. I would like the students to focus on giving us tips on how to achieve the level of a professional, and I would like the professionals to give us insightful knowledge gained only from their personal experience and not common knowledge where you can dig up from books or internet. Lance DudkowskiMy favorite lectures were the ones on the things that ID and Architecture will do in the future. Many of the designs the teachers had were things I wanted to do. They showed the range of things that I could do. There will be millions of possibilities. The teachers seemed very enthusiastic about what they were doing and excited about teaching it.I did not like the readings much at all. I was not interested in reading the stuff we had to. None of the readings really said anything to me; I do not think they really helped with the 5the Street Essay. I liked the research project we tried to do. I know that it did not work out very well, but the intentions were good. It was nice to try and find how things in the past affected those buildings to compare and contrast the past to the present. Our doing consisted of putting the PowerPoint and our notes from the lectures into paragraph form. Then we had to think about how it related to the different levels of the professional and academic fields. Summarizing the articles from the 5th Street Essay made me think how the improvements on the street at that time affected the people and cities at the time. The only doing for each summary consisted of reading 40-60 pages worth of nonsense and write about how it relates to 5th Street. For the essay, we had to go out and take pictures of 5th Street showing how activity changes throughout the day. We had to formulate questions asking why did this occur, and how can we make it better in the future? In the research project we had to go out to the buildings to see why those buildings we important in their time periods. The thought process invoked was how the science and technology of microwaves, TVs, and refrigerators affected the buildings. Lastly, for the final question, our thoughts turned to what we learned over the semester. We had to think of a question relating to architecture in general and see how it could allow us to ask many more questions. Then we had to answer the question with answers from the many lectures. We had only 30 minutes to answer why we felt a certain way about the question. The preceptorials benefitted much. I feel they were great in explaining in more detail the lectures, projects, etc. I don’t think anything should be done to improve these classes, except make them almost weekly. It is a break from all the lectures given. The multiple parts in the projects helped us move along smoothly allowing us to do better. This helped us look better at the world because it broke the world down into pieces which are easier to comprehend than large pieces of information. I think that cross-disciplinary classes would be a lot of fun and very helpful seeing how others react to buildings and the way they are designed. The surprising thing to me was that I actually learned a lot of history about design, as well as, learned new information in the world today about the everyday functions of numerous companies around the nation. How did the Penn U campus change as a result of the renovation? I would like them to focus on actual designs and interviews about the designs to see how people react. I would like some real-world stuff. Sarah Scarborough 1. My favorite lecture was the series on the different areas of study in the College of Architecture as well as the Top Ten series. I know many other students like myself are still unsure of the path they would like to take for the rest of their schooling so it is very helpful to learn more about each major. 2. All of the readings on streets that we had to complete for the Fifth Street Essay were very interesting to me. I have never thought of a street as a thing that can be analyzed that intensely, but after reading the articles, my mind was open to whole new way of looking at a streets and their components. 3. The first assignment that had us analyze the two installations was very interesting to me. I enjoyed hypothesizing about each installation. I wish that the assignment was given later in the semester because I feel like I could have done a better analysis of it after learning how to look at the world with a critical eye in studio, but at the time, I was not ready to make educational conclusions about those installations. 4. A). Summarizing lectures helped us to better understand each lecture because we had to look at them overall and determine what the major points of the lectures were and what was trying to be conveyed to us. B). Summarizing readings helped us to gain background knowledge on subjects and apply that to what we were learning in lectures. C). Essay writing helped us to gather information we gained from lectures and readings and present that information in a clear and concise manner to help convey the conclusions we came to. D). The research project helped us to formulate conclusions of buildings and the reasons for their existence based on each of our filters. E). The formulation of a question helped us to combine everything that we learned in 1060 throughout the course of the semester and focus that into a question that was worth further exploring. It showed us what concept we found most interesting from the class. 5. I think some GTA discussion periods were helpful to clarify some assignments and go over some concepts and ideas that were presented in lectures. But, there were also so classes that we got nothing accomplished in. Therefore, it is important to only schedule those classes when they are absolutely necessary so we use our time efficiently. 6. I enjoyed the Katrina readings and the concept of the time stamps projects because I like to analyze things that actually make a difference in the world. Therefore, I think looking at the world in a constructive way was emphasized to open our minds and improve our critical eyes. 7. Yes, I like the cross-discipliniary perspective and the idea of working on the same project with people from other educational backgrounds and who have different degrees. I think you learn a lot more about your area of study by understanding more than just your part of a project. 8. The concept that has stuck with me is sustainability. I had never heard the term before but it has become one of the first things that come to mind when I think of sustainability. 9. My question was, What are some ways architects and designers are improving the sustainability of their designs? 10. I would like them to focus on career paths after college. To me it is most important to learn what I can do with my major and what types of jobs I will be able to get. Garret Mitchell 1. Out of all the lectures throughout the course my favorites were the lecture on the Building Construction program and the lecture about the different student organizations. I liked these lectures because my intended major is Building Construction and it was interesting to learn more about the major and what the students participate in. 2. All of the readings about the street where interesting to me. It gave me a new outlook onto what a street actually is and how it can be described. 3. The first assignment about analyzing the installations was the most intriguing to me because it was beginning for us to really examine how an object was up close and not just from a distance. We discovered what the object was made up of and not just how it looked. 4. a. Summarizing the lectures was good to help us learn take good notes and to understand the jobs of others. b. The readings helped us to learn more information and background information about the topic. c. Essay writing helped us to bring together all the information we had learned from readings and lectures to develop our own ideas. d. The research project helped us to look at buildings and determine why they are designed a certain way and how it affects its surroundings. e. Formulating out own question brought together everything we had learned throughout the year in 1060 and was a chance for us to create our own topic about something we enjoyed. 5. The bi-weekly GTA discussions were very helpful throughout the course. They helped to get a better understanding on anything that was not clear. I would recommend continuing them next year. 6. I enjoyed the reading on post-Katrina and the time stamps project. It helped me gain a new perspective to evaluate the world and I think it is important for us to look at things from many different views 7. Yes, I would enjoy taking courses and learning more about the built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective. 8. The most surprising take away from this course is that I learned how large the construction industry actually is, I did not realize that it was the second largest industry only to the health industry. 9. The question I formulated was, Why is it pivotal for Architects and Builders to work side by side and communicate while working on a project? 10. I would like them to focus on the big aspects of each major and also, the career path for each major. Tyler Phipps Tyler Phipps 1.My favorite lecture was the AEC integration lecture because I am interested in integration and what to see it pursued further in the future. 2.All of the readings on the street were interesting to me. I enjoyed learning lots of information about something that I previously didn’t realize there was so much information about. 3.The street essay. Again it was interesting to really explore something that I have been on everyday for the past three years but never slowed down enough to enjoy the way it was ment to be. 4.1060 really searched for the minor details. Something that may have been said in a lecture which could be a really big topic but the lecturer chose not to go into it more, usually came up again but still not in great detail 5.They were helpful but it would be nice to seem as though there was more structure to the prepared meeting 6.There is more than one part of the world. By looking at various aspects and information now, we will be more likely to think differently later. 7.Definitely. I want a design build firm someday, so why not learn all I can now? 8.I learned to think differently on the spot without having to use lots of thought to interpret my answers. I was just able to make the answer up as I went 9.With the integration of A/E/C in firms, why are individuals not integrated before they get to the firms so we can design and engineer the project from day one/ 10.Methods and uses of bc technology in the construction industry today and in the near future. Caitlin Fulmer The lecture I found most intriguing was the one on Palladio. I really liked his style and learning about how he designed villas. Dan Baum’s article was the most interesting to me. He managed to address a wide variety of topics in such a concise manner. The research project was the most interesting. Summarizing lectures requires understanding what you have heard and being able to relate this information to others. Summarizing readings makes you think about what the main ideas are and what the author was trying to convey. Essay writing forces you to form an opinion and support it with facts. Research requires understanding what is required of you and how it fits in with the rest of the group. It also requires sifting through a lot of useless information and finding what actually matters. Forming a question requires thinking about what interests you and why. The discussion periods were helpful. Next year they could be slightly shorter, or have more things to do in them. The multiple-part methodology seemed overly long. However, I realize that it helped me more fully understand the assignments. I think it would be very interesting. I was surprised that they can make concrete that floats, but is still strong. What are the building materials of the future? I would like them to focus on different styles and their history. It would also be interesting to learn about different materials. Emily Ernst 1. My favorite lecture was Zimiring’s lecture because I liked learning about health and architecture and how the topics influence each other. 2. I found the “The Street” by Kostoff reading the most intriguing. 3. I thought that the 5th Street assignment was the most intriguing. 4. A. I re-read/looked at the lecture and thought what the main point(s) were. And then take the ideas/argument further. B. see A C. I thought about the issues and what lectures are relevant, and how does this effect me and the area around me. D. I had to think like the architects of the time and do research into what was happening at tat time. E. I had to go back and look at everything: all my notes, the lectures, essays, and projects. Also I had to think what is one of the bigger issues here, between all these different aspects? 5. They were very helpful. I suggest keeping them, and maybe giving topics to discuss and throw around the room. 6. I liked it for the research project, but not for the Katrina project. I understand why it was asked, because things don’t just effect one thing, everything has multiple causesa dn effects. 7. yes, possibly 8. I mow look around me and see how not just one main obvious cause or effect, but multiple causes and effects. 9. I wrote how architecture can improve and effect health, and the environment. 10. I would like them to focus on real issues and how things effect both positively and negatively effect the environment, process, other disciplines, and the nation as a whole. Also what is new and ground breaking. Madlyn Bocinsky 1060 Exit Reflection 1. My favorite lecture was the lecture on the renovation of campus. This interested me because it brought some landscape design into 1060. 2. The reading about Asian people and street was the most intriguing. Looking into cultural aspects when designing is of interest to me. 3. As much as I disliked the street essay, it was the most provocative. 4. a. Reflection and memory b. Reading and reflecting c. Taking in information and twisting it to back your point. d. Research e. Reflection of everything 5. Not really, but it was a fair way to take attendance. I do not recommend them for next year. 6. By looking at the world, first as a whole and then narrowing down our search to focusing on our primary research, we were able to see how everything fit together. We saw the larger picture. 7. It seems like cross-disciplinary is the path to take, because being a multi-faced person is more appealing to companies. Though I recommend having the ability to take cross-disciplinary courses, they should not be required. 8. That I have an interest in Landscape design. 9. Will technology take away the ability to stay healthy? 10. There should be a clear separation between what lectures are id, bc, or arch. With this, the student will be able to make an educated choice when picking his/her disciplinary. Link to this Page
