1. My favorite lecture was on Paladio because I love the history of architecture and how it plays into today.
2. I found the reading on senses and the street to be highly intriguing because I never viewed the formation of a street in the perspective of a blind person.
3. Most intriguing assignment was definitely the research project by allowing you to view aspects of society in a different light.
4. a. You had to be able to view a whole lecture and pick out the key points.
b. Allowing you to not only read a group of articles, but also allow you to read with a purpose.
c. Writing essay forces you to gather information in a coherent fashion.
d. Researching for the group project was viewing the big picture and then narrowing down to the keys points.
e. This was difficult thinking by forming something you are interested in and then being able to connect it to so many different aspects.
5. I definitely think meeting with the GTA was beneficial because it allowed me to reassure myself that I knew exactly what I was supposed to do.
6. Being able to look at everything in multiple fashions is a skill that everyone needs to take with them.
7. I am actually not interested in the Design and Built Environment and this semester allowed me to understand that.
8. I am going to take away my understanding of listening to a lecture and perceiving it through different filters.

Ashlee Hatcher

1. My favorite lecture was the lecture on assistive technology. I feel like I learned a lot more about the world and the way that objects and ideas that are being developed to help people. I loved the fact that there is so much more to design than you ever think about. This is just one other factor that plays a role in the design of a building.
2. I do not think that there is one reading that I can pick out to be the most provocative. All of the readings allowed me to think about things in a new way and in a new light. Through each one, another idea developed and something new popped into my head. I found all of the readings very helpful.
3. The assignment that was most intriguing was the research paper that we had to write. I found that this caused me to not only use the lectures that we had heard during the semester, but to make my own assumptions and observations about something. Focusing on fifth street was very difficult, but looking back upon that, I realize that I did make strides not only in my writing but also in my interpretation skills.
4. Summarizing the lectures required a lot of analysis and reflection upon what was taught. It also required research. Summarizing the readings required analysis skills and interpretation of what is read. Essay writing as I said above allowed me to develop my own observation skills, and also allowed me to begin to think abstractly. The research project tested the research skills that I have as well as my people skills. I realized that I do not like group work, but attempting to research a topic that is not readily available requires a lot of patience. The final question required a lot of reflection on the class, as well as self-reflection. I had to take a good look at what I had done the entire semester and how that related to what I had learned throughout the semester.
5. These discussion were helpful, but I feel that they need to be more structured around the lectures that are given in the weeks before. The vocabulary that is required for the summaries should be developed in the class, and researched then.
6. I think that the multiple-part method allowed for skills to be developed before they are needed for the actual assignment. Developing the skills make the actual assignment that much easier. I believe this emphasis was made to make the actual assignment a little easier, and for it to be more developed into the product that you were essentially looking for.
7. I think that I would be more interested in a cross-disciplinary perspective class. I enjoyed the lectures that at the time seemed random, but upon reflection they all interrelated. This allowed me to realize the way that things all connect.
8. My analysis skill of the lectures is the most surprising thing that I will take away from this course. I feel that I am more well equipped for any learning and ideas that I may acquire at any point.
9. What proof is there that the DBE is now being formed around society and their needs (as a universal design) instead of just a kept design (only using design ideas) like the past?
10. I would like for the lectures to focus on the skills that we will need to develop while in school for the future. The things that we will need to know to make us successful in the real world.


Katherine Kelenfy
1. My favorite lecture was the lecture given on October 22, by Abir Mullick, Introduction to Industrial Design: Program, Discipline, and Profession. He really seemed as though he cared about what he was discussing and was passionate about it. The lecture also showed how Industrial design relates to the community and how it is being used to help people around the world. Also, the slides were pretty.
2. This may not relate to the course, but the reading I enjoyed most was the rather lengthy article on hurricane Katrina and its affects on New Orleans. I learned a few things, and it is something people need to know more about, as a relatively current event.
3. The group project was the most interesting. Our group looking at Material Culture from 1974 to 2000 and it was quite interesting to see the changes made over such a recent time period.

8. I was surprised by how many different disciplines are involved in the architecture field.
9. New urbanism, or traditional neighborhood design is on the rise. How can we ensure that these urban designs will be successful designs that accomplish the goals of a traditional neighborhood?

1. My favorite lecture was the Disability Design and Research lecture by Stephen Springle. I thought this lecture was very interesting because the lecturer was entertaining and attention grabbing. I also enjoyed the information about the advancements in assistive technologies.

2. I found the readings about the street and the pedestrian very intriguing because I am quite interested in how cities are planned especially around pedestrians. These readings answered many questions I had and were exceptionally informative.

3. The assignment I thought was most provocative was the Fifth Street essay. Although this essay was very time consuming and difficult, I enjoyed the readings, observing the street, and relating my thoughts about the effectiveness of Fifth Street to what I have learned this semester.

4. a) you must think through the key points of a lecture and succinctly write the summarize thoughts.
b) same as a however more difficult because the points are written as well.
c) you must formulate your own thoughts about something through research or observation and successfully and intelligently voice your opinion through writing .
d) you must collaborate with others to discover facts and points about the buildings
e) you have to think about the subjects that you find interesting and find one concept that intrigues you and formulate a question based on that subject

5. I thought the preceptorial sessions were very helpful because in large lectures it can be difficult to have interactive discussion due to the large amount of people; however, in preceptorial we could have class wide discussions and interaction with our TA.

6. I thought that these assignments and the methodology were interesting. Looking at the world in this way is different than the way it is usually looked at and being proficient in looking at things in a different way is necessary to becoming a successful designer.

8. I found it surprising that I was as fascinated as I was with the things I learned in this class. Usually lecture classes can be boring; however, 1060 was a class I looked forward to.

1.among the range of lectures on various topics, which was your favorite lecture and why?

My favorite lecture was the one about Industrial Design from the Director of ID. I am planning on being an ID major and it was very interesting to see where I could take it. It helped back up my decision to go ID and it got my excited about my future in the ID program here at Tech.

2. which reading did you find most intriguing or provocative?

My favorite reading was “The Street” since it made me think about streets in a totally different way and it made me think more about them, which proved to be very helpful for the paper that was due on the topic.

3. which assignment did you find most intriguing or provocative?

The assignment that I found most intriguing was the Fifth Street assignment since it was dealing with something so local, so familiar. I felt like, as a person that uses the street, I actually could have a good standpoint on the issue.

4. describe the kind of thinking and doing required by EACH of the following types of assignments: a) summarize lectures; b) summarize readings; c) essay writing (drawing upon readings and observations); d) research: extended group research on the way buildings are 'time stamped' ; e) formulation/preparation of a question (that reflects back upon the semester) for the take-home final.

a)The type of thinking that was required for lecture summaries was about keeping the keypoints and remembering them. Not to take in fluff, but not to miss important facts. Quick notes and sketches if necessary could have been used for this assignment.

b)Readings require more memorization since you want to be able to retain as much of the information as possible for later use. Outlines and detailed notes along with rereading can help with remembering the information.

c)Essay writing helps you organize your ideas and present them in an effective fashion. Rough drafts, outlines and lots of brainstorming has to go on for a good and effective essay.

d)Research projects, especially group ones, need a lot of information and communication. General and specific ideas were needed for this project and we needed that kind of thinking. Research and just talking to other members of the group were essential to this project.

e)Preparing for the final required a lot of reflection and thinking about what was something that stood out. I needed to be able to write the ideas effectively and quickly, so several rewrites of the essay were required in order for me to be able to produce the essay from memory.

5. this year was the first time we did bi-weekly GTA discussion periods. were they helpful? what would you recommend for the next time we do them?

The GTA periods were helpful since it was a smaller group and we didn’t feel as intimidated to ask questions or get help for the class. The bi-weekly seemed a little short, I think once a week is good, but there really wasn’t much to cover besides lectures and the notes were online so I think the bi-weekly schedule is appropriate.

6. what did you think of the multiple-part methodology we asked you to use for one of the assignments (the reading on post-katrina new orleans) and for the 'time stamps' research project? why do you think we emphasized this way of looking at the world?

I think the multiple-part methodology was effective and helped organize things. I didn’t feel overwhelmed when I could do things in parts. I think this was emphasized so we can take thing step by step instead of taking the whole world on, only to be overwhelmed and break down.

7. would you be interested taking courses, over the next few years, that look at the designed and built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective?

No.

8. what is the most surprising take-away from this course? (it could be an idea, fact, skill, or something else).

How much I would probably do with ID and what options are available for me.

Should more money be put into research for better design of products for people with disabilities or people with certain needs?

I would like to see more ID related topics, such as materials, careers, products that are out there designed by people from Tech, companies that we could work for, and intern and study abroad opportunities.


David Hardy

1060 Exit Reflection

1. The lecture that I enjoyed the most was the lecture on building construction. I knew coming into the common first year that I wanted to be either an architecture or building construction major. My experience in 1011 and 1060 has helped me discover that I want to be a building construction major. This lecture really helped me understand more of what building construction is.

2. The reading that I found most interesting was the reading for the essay on fifth street titled "A History of the Street."

3. The assignment that I found to be the most intriguing was one of the first assignments that we did. I really enjoyed the essays that we wrote on the two installations in the college of architecture building. This assignment really helped me to think differently about how I look at something.

4. When we had to summarize the lectures we had to think like we were researching something and writing an essay on it, as opposed to an abstract point of view. The same thinking process occurred when we summarized readings. The research of the essay on fifth street and the group research process way of thinking was more analytical than the summaries. You really had to focus on what you were working on. While it may have seemed that it was necessary to use conventional ways of thinking learned in high school. It was actually needed that students think outside of the box. However, the take home exam required the most out of the box thinking.

5. I think that the GTA discussions were very helpful. I also feel that there should have been more of them. In the future I suggest that the common first year have a weekly GTA discussion.

6. I think that a more current issue would have been more effective for this assignment. Yes, katrina does fit the criteria of the assignment, but I feel that katrina and the aftermath of katrina are looked a little to much. This assignment was done, I think, to get us to think about how our designs affect the environment, and what can happen to them during a natural disaster.

7. I would not be interested in taking classes on the designed and built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplanary perspective.

8. The most surprising take away from this course for me is how much building construction, architecture, and industrial design companies and processes relate and depend on each other.

9. How does our environment affect the design of our products and the way that we run our companies?

10. I would like the building construction students to focus on the co-op opportunities and internship requirements.


Andrew Burton

1. the building construction lecture was my favorite because it was the only one that I felt was directly relevant to what I want to learn about.
2. the one about Katrina and it’s aftermath.
3. I found the weekly reflections most intriguing because they forced me to look back and analyze what I had learned something that I do not do very often.
4. in the summarize the lecture assignments I felt that analytical thinking and a small amount of research were required. In summarize the readings I felt that the same were required. In essay writing I felt that I needed to both think analytically and creatively and I needed to research the topics to be able to write an intelligent essay on them. The research project cause me to think in a organized manner so I could communicate with the other people in my group and it caused me to do some library work, something that I was not accustomed to doing before I began this project. The final caused me to think both creatively and analytically about the ideas that I had been presented with up to this point and it caused me to be creative in my writing so that I could fill the allotted time with my discussion o the topic.
5. no they were not helpful the T.A. was never informed of what he or she needed to discuss in the sessions and therefore they were a waste of my time. Next time I would recommend you not do them
6. I thought it was good, it helped me to break down big pieces of data into process able pieces. I think you emphasize this method because it helps us to process large quantities of data and get the most out of them while at the same time removing unnecessary data.
7. No. though I did find the civil engineering lectures about city planning very interesting.
8. The fact that major arteries in cities move less traffic than a grid system.

My favorite lecture was the lecture was the one on the solar decathalon. I really liked this project because I am really fascinated with green technology and its uses. I really liked this lecture because it allowed students to get involved, as a student presented the lecture and the work was mostly done by students.

2. Which reading did you find most intriguing or provocative?
The reading I found the most intriguing was the reading on the quick history of the street because it was an interesting history of something I hardly thought about before. I did not realize how intricate and long the history of the street was.

3. Which assignment did you find most intriguing or provocative?
The assignment that I found the most interesting was the long 1060 project where we took 3 years and broke it down by different categories, such as culture and architecture.

A. The kind of thinking in the summarize lecture was thinking back on the lectures and understanding the important parts.
B. Summarizing the reading required knowing what was important in a reading and what as not.
C. For essay writing it required looking at readings and studies and combing them to form an essay.
D. The research required thinking about something that normally you would not look at in that way, such as film.
E. The formulation of a question required looking at all the lectures, reading, papers, and project and thinking about them and combining them into one main question/idea.

5. This year was the first time we did bi-weekly GTA discussion periods. were they helpful? what would you recommend for the next time we do them?

They were very helpful and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend that we discuss BC, ID, and architecture jobs more and what they are like. Other than that I really liked the GTA discussion periods.

I thought this multiple-part methodology was good because it allowed for the most analyze and description of the topic. I think this way of thinking was emphasized because it allowed us to write more articulate and detailed papers that incorporated multiple information and ways of looking.

7. Would you be interested taking courses, over the next few years, that look at the designed and built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective?

Yes, I would as that would allow me to understand the field that I will go onto work in with multiple perspectives. It would let me have a enriched background that would help me very much when I go into the workforce.

The most surprising take-away from this course was the understanding that multiple concepts that incorporate and relate to architecture. This I learned in the big project in 1060 and how concepts such as culture and materials.

I think that this is a good idea. I really think it should focus on these three elements: id, bc, and architecture.

My favorite lecture was on disability design and research by Stephen Sprigle. I found it very intriguing. He kept my attention the entire time and I learned so much from his presentation. It made me think about why things are the way they are and things made for disabled people are often used by everyone.

2. which reading did you find most intriguing or provocative?

My favorite reading was on the relationships of walking and streets. I helped me with my Fifth street essay a substantial amount. It made me think about Fifth Street in a new light.

3. which assignment did you find most intriguing or provocative?

The most provocative assignment was the Fifth Street essay. I absolutely loved it. Its something that affects us as students and it close to us. Because of this we could observe it for ourselves and form our own opinions. It made me much more aware of my surroundings.

a) summarize lectures:
Forces you to think critically and formulate questions. It aids the lectures and supplements them as well. I found that the sooner I did the summaries the more I got out of them.
b) summarize readings:
Summarizing readings helped me to actually think about what I was reading and it helped me when I used my summaries as reference in studying and following assignments.
c) essay writing (drawing upon readings and observations):
forced us to really think about something a lot. It wasn’t something that could be done in one day; it had to be reflected upon and considered.
d) research: extended group research on the way buildings are 'time stamped':
Forced us to gather our own information and formulate our own thoughts and conclusions.
e) formulation/preparation of a question (that reflects back upon the semester) for the take-home final:
We had to reflect over the entire years information. It gave us room for growth and it was more difficult than it seemed. It took a lot of work to form an intelligent deep question and also to answer it. It made you think about things at once as well as things never considered before.

5. this year was the first time we did bi-weekly GTA discussion periods. were they helpful? what would you recommend for the next time we do them?

They were helpful in that they clarified assignments and let us get to know our TA. It gave us someone to forward our questions to. As a class we got to hear others questions and concerns and thoughts which was helpful. For the next time I would recommend more of them. They were very informational and helpful.

I wasn’t really fond of the multiple part methodology used. I felt the assignment was slightly unclear as posted on coolx and confusing. The time stamps research project was useful and provoked thinking in a wider scale but the large groups made it difficult to get together. I think you emphasized that way of looking at world so we could see how things connect and intertwine. Each one of the things we learned about affected another and they all related in some fashion.

7. would you be interested taking courses, over the next few years, that look at the designed and built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective?

Yes. I think its important to see the big perspective on things. It is truly a worthwhile thing to know.

8. what is the most surprising take-away from this course? (it could be an idea, fact, skill, or something else).

I took away my critical thinking. I am a very positive person and not very critical but I was forced to see things from a new view. It made me more skeptical than used to be less accepting of things in a good way. I can now see the positive and negative in things and can learn from them.

How could architects use their talents and knowledge of structural integrity and beauty to master something completely different?

I would like them to focus on different career paths. It is important to know our options. For example, what other careers could an architect have besides architecture?

1. The lecture on classical architecture given at the beginning of the semester was definitely one of my favorites because classical architecture is what I would like to study in grad school. It was very interesting to hear different students accounts of their work in the program at tech and the different groups of people and different locations they are work with each day.

2. The readings over the street that I explored while researching information for my fifth street essay were all very intriguing because they showed a lot of different perspectives that one doesn’t usually think about when simply walking down a street.

3. I really enjoyed the time stamp assignment. It was nice to work with a group of people and learn more about our area and how our culture relates to what we are studying.

4. a) When summarizing the lectures, I had to revisit my notes from the lectures and really explore any questions that emerged from each of the topics in order to adequately summarize the main idea behind each presentation.
b) When summarizing the readings, I had to take notes while reading in order to remember the key points, so that I was able to elaborate on them in my summaries.
c) The essays required me to not only take notes during the readings but also carefully analyze my other observations so that I would have a well rounded essay.
d) While researching for my timestamps, I had to explore a variety of sources from the Internet to the library to find enough material to cover the thirty year period and to establish a full time line.
e) To formulate my question for the final exam, I looked back over all the lectures and over the semester as a whole to find a question about how design affected all parts of my life this semester.

5. They were somewhat helpful. However, sometimes I feel like they were a little unproductive and unorganized. For next semester, I would recommend more organization for the time stamp project as far deadlines and what was expected for each class.

6. The multiple-part methodology forced us to look at time and the influence of change in the world. I think it was an interesting approach to an assignment because it was different from the norm.

Chris Zajac’s 1060 Reflections

1. among the range of lectures on various topics, which was your favorite lecture and why?
My favorite lecture was conducted by Ruth Dusseault and was a photographical journey on the life of the old Atlantic Steel Mill and its eventual destruction and the creation of Atlantic station. I could relate to this lecture since my family for the past several generations have worked for Bethlehem Steel. My great great grandfather was a coal miner. My great grandfather was a steel chipper. My grandfather was a mechanical engineer that serviced the blast furnaces. And my dad was training to do the same until the company ran out of business and began to shut down. It now is being decommissioned and will eventually become a parking lot and residential real estate. I hate that, where is our sense of historical preservation. These factories are beautiful.

2. which reading did you find most intriguing or provocative?

The reading I found the most intriguing was the reading on the quick history of the street. This history was interesting and a great resource to develop my fifth street essay. It gave me new perspectives on the street.

3. which assignment did you find most intriguing or provocative?
I found the research project to be the most intriguing. I did mine on civil engineering in the past three decades. Since I am considering majoring in civil engineering this assignment gave me a taste of what civil engineers have done for our world.

A) Summarizing lectures helps the ideas of the lecture sink into our heads. It requires us to pay close attention to the lecture and take detailed notes.
B) Summarizing readings helped us isolate what was important in the readings.
C) Essay writing such has the 5th street essay taught us to extensively look and analyze a built environment.
D) Research projects taught us to use library as a resource and to have an intelligent in depth analysis of a subject. Also teamwork and collaboration were important skills that were tested.
E) The take home essay assignment was a reflection assignment to show us how our thinking has change and developed after going through our first semester as architectures.

These discussion periods were very helpful. They gave us a chance to ask questions about the cource and assignments. We also got the chance to have a smaller class/ more personal learning environment.

Yes definitely. Even though I am considering changing my major these courses are interesting and essential to creating a well rounded mind.

8. what is the most surprising take-away from this course? (it could be an idea, fact, skill, or something else).
I learned many Photoshoping skills and techniques. We had a lecture on how to use this program and it taught me leaps and bounds and brought me a long way to becoming a Photoshop expert.

My question for the take home final was how we can transform an already developed inner city environment into a pedestrian friendly and safe environment?

10. the lecture hour in coa 1012 will focus on the three majors: arch, bc, and id as well as on issues shared by all of them. we plan on inviting both students and professionals. what would you like them to focus on?
I like having this tri focus. As of now I am not sure what the correct path is for my future. These lectures help me decide what I will plan to do and give me an idea of how each profession operates.


Matt Hoots

1. It is tough to decide, but based on the lecture that I actually reference the most I would have to say Tristan’s lecture was the most influential on my current vocabulary.
2. I enjoyed the reading on the street. Again, I was able to increase my vocabulary and understanding of the development f Atlanta.
3. The street project was the most intriguing since I was able to do some research and understand the history of Atlanta and GA Tech better.
4. a) summarize lectures- during the lecture it is important to note key words and phrases since they typically are not put on the PPT.
b) summarize readings; - Finding out the main point of the reading and being able to sort and pull our information that is relevant to the overall topic of study is crucial.
c) essay writing (drawing upon readings and observations); It is important to come up with a thesis or main idea and have at least 3 supporting sub topics that strengthens the overall paper.
d) research: extended group research on the way buildings are 'time stamped' ; - It is important to be able to subdivide tasks, but also be able to see common threads and support the other groups by tying together the common threads.
e) formulation/preparation of a question (that reflects back upon the semester) for the take-home final.- this one was easier for me since I always have so many questions about the industry that I am trying to solve. Since I had some questions about my practice in relation to the market, I was able to answer the question on the final.
5. They were helpful to add clarity to the subject, but I felt that the TA’s were not given enough time before class to properly prepare. The whole semester seemed to be planned on the fly.
6. I enjoyed the street prject more than the Katrina research. I had lived in NOLA for 4 years and it was redundant since I already knew most of the topics from first hand experience.

8. That design build is not as common as I thought that is was. You are still teaching the old way of doing things and as an innovator I am forced to comply with some of the models that you preach about even though there are better ways of building.
9. Q: How can a design / build company survive/ adapt to a design then build world in the current market place.
10. All of the three. The most successful presenter knew their audience or made there presentation more interesting. At this level, the lectures need to be able to get the attention of the students who are still trying to decide which direction that they want to go in.


Christopher Hamby

1) My favorite lecture was based on the industrial design of a hospital, and the idea of universal design. Both of these ideas showed how an ID major would truly be useful, and how they would work in the real world after college. I also liked the specific major classes, because I felt they helped to teach most about the jobs of each course specifically.

2) I really enjoyed some of the social aspects of the street readings. I enjoyed thinking of design in terms of how different people think and why people act as absurdly as they do. I believe I learn the most from subjects I find interesting.

3) As much work as it was, I really enjoyed the 5th Street Essay. I felt I was allowed to explore a lot, we were given a large amount of information and resources, and it was a very dynamic and interesting project to undertake.

4) a) Summarize lecture assignments weren't very helpful in my opinion. I agree a few small assignments were needed to stay on track but summary didn't actually invite learning any more than re-wording class notes.
b) Summarize readings were also not very exciting or particularly helpful. I was required to read, but not think very much.
c) Essay writing required a lot more research, organization, and thought, and I felt was a better alternative to summary. Observation was especially useful and interesting.
d) The group research was a very interesting project and I felt I learned a lot from it, but I understood very little of what we were doing until the very end. If it were explained more thoroughly in the beginning, I may have gotten much more out of the assignment.
e) The final exam assignment was very creative and unique. Requirement of thought, research, reading, and an interesting self-chosen topic combined to make a very good final assignment.

5) The GTA discussions were occasionally helpful and useful, but some times we had nothing to do or learn, so some time was wasted. I recommend them to next year, but with more planned things to go over.

6) The multiple part methodology was a interesting and strong method of looking at the post-Katrina assignments, and since the problems were still being dealt with, I felt they were very applicable and good to learn about.

Jill Exley – 1060 Reflection

1. My favorite lecture was the AEC integration lecture because I liked the idea integrating architecture, engineering, and construction together.

2. “The Street” by Kostoff was my favorite of the readings that we read all semester.

3. The assignment of the essay on Fifth Street was my favorite and most challenging assignment of all the assignments we had all semester.

4. a) summarize lectures – I write down the important words and phrases that the person giving the lecture says. I also write down words that are unfamiliar to me so I can understand what they are talking about better; b) summarize readings – I read the reading once without interruption and then again I highlight key ideas and then write notes on the side. Then I summarize all of my highlights and notes; c) essay writing – I look over my notes as well as the slides from the lecture again to write the essays d) research: extended group research on the way buildings are 'time stamped' – Working with a group I had to trust the others to do their part and just research and do the readings on my portion of the project; e) formulation/preparation of a question – I looked over all of my old notes on lectures and reread my essays and assignments to see which sparked a lot of my interest. I reflected on not only 1060 and 1011 but everything I have learned while being here at Georgia Tech.

5. The GTA discussions were not all that helpful to me at all. I felt as though we should have had reviews in the lecture room with Sabir. And then could visit our TA’s if we still did not understand. I think that the GTA discussions could be better if the reviews were not biweekly, but weekly.

6. This expanded our way of thinking from not just a simple and basic level, but also on a level of complexity as well.

7. Yes, I would take courses that look at the design and built environment. I learned so much from the lectures in 1060 just this semester that I cannot imagine how much I will learn from more courses on these topics.

8. The most surprising thing to me was the idea of having Architecture, Industrial Design, and Building Construction in the same first year program. It confused me and I wasn’t sure how it would work because I did not see the correlation between the three, but I have learned through the course of lectures and studio in 1060 and 1011 that they do all relate and being in the same classes with the other majors helps overall with the different aspects of each of the majors.

9. I don’t remember my specific question that I wrote down because I think that a few of the words were different on my final than I have in my notes, but it was basically “Does AEC integration really work in today’s environment and if so, how?”

10. I like the idea of integrating the three majors, so I would like the lectures to focus on all three if possible and not just one at a time. I also think that engineering should be tied into the lectures every once and while and how it can be used with the COA since we go to Georgia Tech where the majority of the students here are studying engineering.

1. Among the range of lectures on various topics, which was your favorite lecture and why?
  • My favorite lectures were the ones that dealt mostly with architecture due to the fact that architecture is my intended major. I really loved the lecture on classical architecture as well as the lecture pertaining to atlantic station.
2. Which reading did you find most intriguing or provocative?
  • The reading that I found most intriguing was the writing by Nicolaides on contour and perception. His view on how to draw was really insightful.

3. Which assignment did you find most intriguing or provocative?
  • The assignment I found most provocative was the light studies assignment at the end of the first exercise. I took this assignment as a joke for the first two pages of thumbnails and it showed. However, after that I took it seriously and I came up with some great artwork. I really like my final killer charcoal.

Describe the kind of thinking and doing required by EACH of the following types of assignments: a) summarize lectures; b) summarize readings; c) essay writing (drawing upon readings and observations); d) research: extended group research on the way buildings are 'time stamped' ; e) formulation/preparation of a question (that reflects back upon the semester) for the take-home final.
  • Summarizing lectures requires note-taking and tentative listening. Summarizing readings requires notes for the reading and actually reading the piece, not just skimming it. Essay writing involves rough drafts and layouts as well as finding sources for information. Research involves a lot of time group work and meetings. Research also involves a lot of time online finding sources and time in the library looking for books and other written sources. Preparation of a question requires you to have paid attention in class and lectures and to know what you are asking about and to have an idea of what the answer might be.

5. This year was the first time we did bi-weekly GTA discussion periods. were they helpful? what would you recommend for the next time we do them?

- I do not personally believe that the bi-weekly meetings were helpful. For the next time I recommend you split the semester half bi-weekly and half singular weekly and have the students put their input in on the both of the discussion periods.

6. What did you think of the multiple-part methodology we asked you to use for one of the assignments (the reading on post-katrina new orleans) and for the 'time stamps' research project? why do you think we emphasized this way of looking at the world?

I believe you emphasized that look on the world to let us know that times change and one minute you could be in a blooming city, the next minute you could be picking your house out of your neighbors yard. The time stamps also show us where we have been and give us a little glimpse of what future may come.

7. Would you be interested taking courses, over the next few years, that look at the designed and built world from an inter-disciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective?

I do not believe I would be that interested in these kind of courses, I am a more hands on person and like studio courses. I also would like to stick to just the architecture base, not really the other disciplines involved.

8. What is the most surprising take-away from this course? (it could be an idea, fact, skill, or something else).

The most surprising take-away I had from this course was that it just takes a little bit of taking a leap of faith for you to do well. My friend took this leap of faith and ended up getting second place in the CFY riff competition.

With the new technology out there today, I was wondering if it was possible to design a green traditional neighborhood development for a reasonable price, and If it would be popular to the surrounding community?

I would like them to focus on their favorite aspects of the major they chose and the questions and answers that lead them to pick their desired major. I would also like them to present on their favorite ideas dealing with their major.
