ex 3 reflection prompt

Ex 3: Unpack, Playback, Riff
Due 12.12

Please respond to the following prompts in separate paragraphs. We very strongly recommend that you re-read the Exercise 3 brief before responding to the prompts below. The common template for Exercise 3 is available at http://cool.coa.gatech.edu:8000/coolx/16

Ending the semester with a competition was an opportunity for you to make use of the many different ways of thinking and making you have been exposed to during 1011. Exercise 3 asked you:
  • to explicitly engage and rework the design data you gathered ex 2 (through riffing) and make it generative of multiple possibilities;
  • to invite a way of thinking and making that was not over-determined, but open to discovery, taking advantage of opportunities as they surfaced.

Part I
Reflect back over the exercise.
  • Identify at least three ways in which this exercise challenged you (the way you thought, drew, proceeded, interpreted, responded. . . )
  • Identify specific ways it either tested or extended your skills?
  • Do you think you were able to leverage investigation and description skills learned in exercises 1 and 2?

Part II
How would you evaluate your competition entry based on the three criteria identified in the Ex 3 design brief and used by the review panel?
What are the specific strengths of your entry? And what would you do differently next time?
  • How intelligently did your Before's DNA set up possibilities for After?
  • How effectively did your distinct variations of After play off Before?
  • How rich was your riffing?

Part III
Ex 3 both built upon and pulled the rug from under Ex 2. How would you characterize each in terms of the other?
